No. 42.] • 505 NEW ZEALAND POLICE GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. WELLINGTON, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1911. NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct. PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND.— 7th August last, on warrant of commit- ment to Mount Eden Prison for three days in default of paying 17s. 6d. oostn for medical treatment while in custody for drunkenness, Thomas Evans Thomas, age fifty, height 5 ft. 9Jin., cook, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes. AUCKLAND.— 27th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 2 10s. fine and costs for procuring liquor during the cur- rency of his prohibition order, Arthur William Cocker, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 6Jin., accountant and travel er, native of England, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, weak intellect; generally dressed in grey suit and cap. ( See next paragraph.) AUCKLAND.— 2nd nstant, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for three days in default of paying £ 1 3s. fine and costs for procuring liquor during the cur- rency of his prohibition order, Arthur William Cocker, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 6Jin., accountant and traveller, native of England, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, weak intellect ; g° nerally dressed in grey suit and oap. AUCKLAND.— About 14th instant, on warrant for theft of a gold filled watch ( reoovered), a blaok silk nbbon watch- guard, a small gold mounted greenstone pendant, and a silver- mounted crocodile - skin cigarette- case, total value £ 5 10s., the property of Reuben Ferguson, bushman, Ma- ngapehi, C. Kirby ( probably fictitious), age about twen'y- six, height about 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in., supposed native of New Zealand, medium build, inclined to fair complexion, clean- shaved ; well dressed in dark or blue suit; carries an um- brella. QUEEN STREET WHARF ( AUCKLAND).— About 24th June last, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for three days in default of paying £ 2 2s. fine and cos's for a breach of the Auckland Harbour Board Bv- laws, Pontus Albion Polson, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 7 in., master mariner, native of Norway, medium build, fair complexion, hair, beard, and moustache ; dressed in dark- tweed suit and black hard hat. He is supposed to have gone to Sydney. QUEEN STREET WHARF ( AUCKLAND).— 4th April last, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for forty- eight hours iu default of paying 16s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Frederick Hopgood, age sixty- eight, height 5 ft. 5Jin., fisherman, native of America, thin build, sallow complexion, generally wears a wig, blue eyes, large nose, burn- scar on right forearm. PUKEKOHE.— 20th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to M iunt Eden Prison for one week in default of paying £ 2 10s. 6d. fine and costs for a breach of the Railway By- laws, Harold Brown, age thirty- two, height 5 ft. 5 in., sailor and labourer, native of England, stout build, swarthy comolexion, blue eyes, large broad nose, stubby moustache, Australian coat- of- arms on right arm, several scars on faoe; fond of drink ; shabbily dressed. HAMILTON.— 28th August last, that he may be compelled to pay for the maintenance of his two ohildren at Weraroa Training Farm, George H. Groves, age about fifty, height 5ft. 7in., sawmill hand, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, long greyish beard, some fingers missing from one hand ; generally dressed in grey suit. He was last heard of at Mangapehi. Arrears to 9th August last, £ 11 10$. Inquiry is at the in- stance of the Education Department. 506 N E W Z E A L A N D P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. [ OCT. 25 TAURANGA.— Harry Powell, wanted on warrant for theft as a co- owner: Offender, who has assumed the name Harry James Chapman, is undergoing a sentence of eighteen months at Adelaide, South Australia, for forging a receipt. He is also wanted for forgery and uttering in Vic- toria. ( See Victorian Police Gazette, 1910, page 400.) ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 273.) ( C. R. 11/ 424.) TAIHAPE.— 28th ultimo, for false pretences, Tom Barr ( supposed fictitious), age about thirty- two, height about 5 ft. 5 in., supposed farmer, supposed native of New Zea land, medium build, dark complexion, clean- shaved, shifty manner ; dressed in dark- tweed coat, light- coloured saddle- tweed riding- pants, dark- tan leggings, and dark- grey cap. Offender, by means of a worthless cheque, obtained goods and money, value £ 3, from George A. Somerville, draper. No warrant. HASTINGS.— 7th instant, on warrant for failing to pro- vide for the adequate maintenance of his illegitimate child, Robert Henry Moore, age thirty, height 5 ft. lin. or 2 in., barber, native of Dunedin, New Zealand, thick- set build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey and cut straight at back, light- brown eyes; stylishly dressed. He was formerly in business at Levin. Complainant, Nellie Wooding. WANGANUI.— 17th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his illegitimate child, William Henry Potts, age twenty- five, height 6 ft., carpenter and motor machinist, strong erect build, broad shoulders, closely cut light- brown hair thin in front, round face, clean- shaved ; dressed in dark suit and cap. Complainant, Elsie Rebecca Priestley, 107 Bell Street. WANGANUI.— 29th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Police- gaol for thirty days in default of paying £ 3 3s. fine and costs for obscene language, Daniel McLeod, age forty- nine, height 6 ft., ex bookmaker and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow com- plexion, grey hair, blue eyes, grey moustache ; fond of drink ; dressed in grey suit and black hard hat. ( See Police Gazette, 1909, page 462.) He is supposed to have gone to Auckland. WELLINGTON.— 18th instant, on warrant for deserting the s. s. " Rotorua," Patrick Needham, age forty- one, height 5 ft. 8 in., fireman, native of England, stout build, fair oomplexion, hair, and moustache, brown eyes. MOUNT COOK ( WELLINGTON).— 14th August last, that he may be compelled to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his son at Weraroa Training Farm, Arthur Henry Widdas, age forty- two, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair- dresser, native of England, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, flag on right forearm, five- pointed star between right thumb and index finger, " F. N. H." and bracelet on left wrist, scar on upper lip, two soars on forehead; addicted to drink; dressed in dark suit and black hard hat. He was last heard of at Auokland Hospital. GREYMOUTH.— 13th instant, on warrant of commitment to Greymouth Police- gaol for twenty- four hours in default of paying 13s. fine and costs for theft, Charles Thompson, alias Charles Smith, age thirty- three, height 5 ft. 9 m., labourer, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, sandy moustache; dressed in dark suit and hard hat. DUNEDIN.— 6th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £ 4 10s. arrears due in connection with a maintenance order for the support of bis wife, Ernest Augustin Corley, age thirty- four, height 5ft. 4Jin., range- fitter, native of England, fair complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, long thin nose, lance- mark on left arm. DUNEDIN.— 16th instant, for forgery and uttering, Donald McKenzie ( probably fiotitious), age about twenty- seven, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, rosy plump face, fair hair; dressed in dark- grey tweed suit, light- grey tweed cao, and grey- tweed overcoat; carries an umbrella with " D. McKenzie" engraved thereon. Offender forged the name John Johnson to a cheque for £ 5 2s. 6d., and uttered the same to A. and T. Inglis. He may be identical with Francis James Cox referred to in Police Gazette, 1910, page 130. No warrant. INVERCARGILL.— 13th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his wife, Mary Eliza- beth O'Brien, Mataura, John Murdock O'Brien, age twenty- eight but looks forty, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., native of Southland, New Zealand, medium to stout build, dark to grey hair, grey eyes, clean- shaved, Irish accent in speech, scar under hair on forehead and at back of one ear ; wears a greenstone ring on left little finger. INVERCARGILL.— 3rd instant, on warrant of commitment to Invercargill Prison for seven days in default of paying £ l'l5s. fine and costs for disorderly behaviour while drunk, George Pert Stephen, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. 5in., seaman and labourer, native of Scotland, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, clean- shaved ; generally dressed in dark - brown suit and cap. HAMILTON. — Leonard Willis, alias Leslie Ellis, default of fine and costs, has been arrested by Constable F. Woods, Foxton police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 492.) HASTINGS.— John Golds, default of fine and costs : The amount has been paid to the Wairoa police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 261.) DANNEVIRKE.— Annie Turnbull, missing, has been located at Greymouth. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 479.) WANGANUI.— Albert Treves, or Trebes, arrears for maintenance of his children, has been located by Constable Annison and Sergeant Beattie, Ohakune and Taihape police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 381.) WELLINGTON.— Hubert Edward Haggar, failing to provide for the maintenance of his wife and children, has been arrested by Constable Flanagan, Hawera police. CHRISTCHURCH.— Alfred Dryden, failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, has been arrested by Acting- Detective Oshorn, Christohurch police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 478.) CHRISTCHURCH.— Sydney Lloyd Taylor, disobeying an order of Court, has been arrested by Constable Townsend, Nelson police. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 232.) AUCKLAND.— 16th ultimo, from the dressing- room at Alexandra Park, Epsom, the property of HENRY GORDON WILDING, clerk, 7 Waterview Road, Devonport, a gentle- men's gun- metal watoh ; a ladies' gold snake- pattern chain ; a gold medal, slightly larger than a shilling, with a field- gun engraved on one side and " Presented by Mrs. Knyvett to the Winner of the Nathan Cup, won by H. G. Wilding," on other side ; and a silver medal with fern- leaves on one side : total value, £ 3 lis. PAEROA.— 12th instant, the whare of CHARLES NEW- LAND and LANCE WATSON, Komata North, was broken into, and the following articles stolen therefrom: A gentle men's gold hunting keyless watch ; a gold small- curb- pattern ohain ; a gold- mounted quartz pendant; a silver sovereign- case ; two half- sovereigns ; a gentlemen's 18 ct. gold open- face English lever watch, No. 43585; and a silver chain: total value, £ 33 10s. Suspicion is attached to a, Man ( name unknown), age about forty, height 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in., medium build, small fair moustache, upper front teeth missing; dressed in dark suit; carried a swag in a flour- bag. SYDNEY. — Oliver James Samuels, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 7 in., seaman, native of New South Wales, brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion. Deserted 3rd instant. A reward not exceeding £ 3 is offered for his apprehension. MISSING, HUNTERVILLE.— Since 11th instant, Frank Hilmer, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 11 in., postal clerk and tele- graphist, native of New Zealand, slim build, pale fair com- plexion, hollow cheeks, high cheek- bones, aquiline nose; dressed in dark suit and blaok hard hat. He has been despondent, and fears are entertained for his safety. Inquiry is at the instanoe of his wife, Maud Hilmer. INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. • SYDNEY ( NEW SOUTH WALES). — 4th instant, on warrant for conspiring with Robert Holt to cheat and defraud Thomas Atkinson McDowell of the sum of £ 5, at Randwick, James Connelly, age thirty- eight, con- fidence man and supposed compositor, slight build, fair sunburnt complexion, brown hair ( slightly bald on top of head), clean- shaved, smart appearance; dressed in grey- tweed sac suit and soft grey- felt hat; travels in country districts. He was charged with this offence and admitted to bail, but absconded on 9th instant. If located, an immediate communication is to be sent to the Commissioner's Office, Wellington. ( C. R. 11/ 245.) SYDNEY ( NEW SOUTH WALES).— The following cablegram, dated 21st instant, has been received from the Inspector- General of Police, Sydney : " Big diamond jewellery robbery here last night.
