THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2894. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR OF IHI POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. S. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be dearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Svery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted avd no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged bj counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen properly to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension nr recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clcarly written on one. side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street I'ost Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion { if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICB GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Ear- rings : 1 pair gold chain drop, set diamond and pearl on chain with green tourmaline drop. Rings : 1 lady's gold, set large diamond surrounded by small diamonds, flanked by 2 pear- shaped rubies, in old- fashioned setting: 1 lady's gold half- hoop, set 5 pearls intersected with small rose diamonds, old- fashioned setting; 1 lady's gold, shape of ace of clubs, set 3 pearls ( 1 grey and 1 white tint with small diamond in centre of pearls and 1 at base); 1 do., shape of horse- slioe, set small diamonds; 1 do., set single diamond, claw setting; 1 plain gold match box, Mat to Fred, 1911, thereon; 1 gold keyless watch, plain back, double mono- gram, M. A butler. 3.— B Division.— For embezzling £ 1 2^. 19th ult.— HANS POPP, a German, age 18, height 5 ft. 6£ ins., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, speaks very little English ; dress, dark grey jacket suit and cap, blue tie, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 4.— Reading [ County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque on the London & Provincial Bank, Tottenham, London, 9th inst,, a grey mare, 6 years, 14 hands 2 ins., sand cracks off fore foot, and a black mare, 7 years, 14 hands 2 ins., scar both sides, caused by traces, white star on forehead, one hind foot white.— G. BROWN, alias H. LAKE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark, sleepy appearance; dress, plaid suit, brown boots. The black mare was advertised, Brown called upon the farmer, stated he had been sent by Lake to purchase the horses It has since been ascertained that Brown and Lake are identical. The horses reached Padding- ton 10th inst., were taken to a stable in Lambeth, and removed the following day, supposed into Essex. Is identical with man, Cases No. 21, 21st June, and 4, 7th July last. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police, Reading. CHESHIRE. 5.— Nantwich ( County). — For assault on Police.— CHARLES EVANS, age 33 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, carries his head forward when walk- ing ; dress, old dark suit and cap. A native of Whitchurch. Is an associate of thievesi and poach- ers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Garner, Nantwich. ESSEX. 6.— Grays ( County).— For an indecent assault on a girl age 18 years, at Horndon- on- the- Hill, 11th inst., A MAN, age 24 to 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., slight build, complexion red, hair dark, dress, dark suit and cap, trousers very ragged at bottoms, carried a black overcoat and a bargeman's white bag. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Grays. 7.— Romfortl ( County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque, 11th inst., a bay cob gelding, 13 hands, 2 ins., 4 years, goose rumped, cow hocked, wide action in front, sunken temples.— HARRY LAKE, alias FREDERICK HUBBARD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair light brown, clean shaven, head bent forward, one shoulder higher than other, mole on one cheek; dress, dark grey mixture suit, cap, brown boots with wide welts. Jones, Romford. 8 — Southend ( County).— For stealing £ 8 10s. 12th inst.— ARTHUR McMULLEN, alias ALBERT McMULLEN, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., slight build, complexion fresh, hair black, eyes believed brown; dress, brown jacket and vest, black striped tweed trousers, green silk tie, blue socks, grey cap, shoes. A barman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Southend. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 9.— Cardiff ( City).— For embezzlement— ALBERT FARTHING, age about 20, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, thin face, hair brown clean shaven; dress, greenish mix- ture suit, dark cap, brown boots. A carter; native of Cardiff. Warrant issued. 10.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a set of chimney- sweeping tools.— HENRY FRANCIS, age 31, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, wearing a dark working suit. A chimney- sweep; native of Newport, Mon. Absconded 31st ult., and will no doubt be found in the South Wales Colliery District. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 11.— Dursley ( County).— For housebreaking and stealing a gold curb bangle bracelet; gold brooch, 3 small stones in centre; small round brooch, red stone in centre; an old ring set blue stone and a black leather purse containing 6s., 2 crooked sixpenny pieces, and a fourpenny piece HENRY JOHNSON, alias WALLACE, WIL- LIS, BAKER, and BOLTON, Office No. 1654- 00 ( see Case 15, 15th inst.), age 31, height 5 ft. 9 ins., stout built, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar top of head, left side of face, mole back of head and on forehead; dress, dark suit with small stripes, bowler hat, woollen collar, lace boots. Perkins, Dursley. 12 - Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 40 and a complete set of Transvaal ( Kruger) coins from the Salvation Army Shelter, 27th February, 1910.— THOMAS DUNSMORE, a Scotchman, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., complexion pale, clean shaved, front teeth missing, rather bow legged, woman tattooed on one forearm, crest with Mary and true love on other; dress, light grey overcoat, greyish suit ( riding style), may be wearing dark leggings. Has been to sea as a cook's mate. Is now usiDg the name of MONTAGUE and stays at Salvation and Church Army Homes. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. N." stamped on bar, " Featherweight " written on bar. — HENRY HILL ( supposed false), age about 32, height 5 ft. 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair sandy ( bald on top), clean shaved, cast in left eye, < at mark right wrist and thick part of left thumb ; dress, dark green jacket with dark stripes, dark grey mixture vest, fawn colour knickers, brown worsted stockings, dark brown leggings with straps, lace boots. Stated he was foreman for the National Telephone Company, and would be employed for about 3 weeks, between Longridge and Preston. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 22, 8th inst. Warrant issued. Had with him a bicycle. He took lodgings and stated he was an electrician. Information to the Chief Constable, Preston. NO TTINGHA MS HIRE. 19.— Nottingham { City).— For stealing, 8th inst., a lady's gold dress ring, set sapphire in centre and diamond each side, believed fancy claw setting — MAGGIE KELLY, alias WOODS, HINDS, SMITH, MURPHY, PITT, and MORLEY, Office No. 1074- 07, age 38, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue; draws top lip to one side when speaking; dress, pale blue or grey skirt, long black satin jacket, trimmed black and white striped silk, large gilt buttons, black pierrot- shaped hat, with large white plumes back, large plain black buckle and bow of velvet in front, white blouse. Warrant issued. Information to ham. the Chief Constable, Notting- plexion and slight moustache dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, believed tattooed both arms; dress, dark mixture suit, dark cap and muffler, military shirt and boots. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- SURREY. 21 — Chertsey { County).— For leaving his children chargeable to Chertsey Union— THOMAS REGAN, age about 48, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top), and mous- tache light, eyes blue, walks rather quickly, carries his head forward. A labourer. May be found working in brickyards or with threshing machines. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Meai's, Chertsey. 22 — Hersham ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 19s. 5£ d. by a worthless cheque on Lloyd's, Barnetts and Bosanquet's Bank, 72, Lombard Street, London, No. o/ c. 58924, drawn in favour of H. Bradford, signed Bevan Douglas, dated 12th September, 191L at Walton- on- Thames— H. BRADFORD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion ruddy, hair auburn, clean shaven; dress, blue serge jacket suit, small tie, white straw hat, with black band. Represented himself as mess steward to a cadet corps to be encamped in the neighbourhood, purchased goods and in pay- ment tendered the cheque and received the balance. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. ! 8.— Peterborough ( Liberty of). — For stealing between 5th ult., and 4th inst., a quan- tity of valuable china, etc. ( recovered). CHARLES MEREDITH, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( sup- posed) grey, very erect bearing, very fond of talk- ing of swimming, football and cricket; dress, dark grey mixture suit, dark grey or green cap, dark brown tie, rubber collar; was employed as a foot- man at Southorpe. A native of Shifnal, Salop. WA R WICKSHIRE. 28.— Birmingham { City). — For stealing £ 2, tram tickets, punch and satchel— ALFRED SCRANAGE, age 27, height 5 ft. ins. com- plexion sallow, hair ( curly) dark, eyes ( deeply set) hazel, deep scars over left eye and across chin, walks erect. A tramcar conductor. Has been bandsman in the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. Is believed travelling the country with his brother, a scissors grinder, wife of latter, end son age 9 years. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom Information to the Chief Constable, Birming ham. 21.— Leamington ( Borough).— For obtain in by a worthless cheque, 9th inst., one lady's gold keyless half- hunter watch, No. 1615 ( scratch, d in side case 2169 j/ g x/ x), one 15ct. long gold guard trace pattern, and £ 3 10s. 0d.— ANNIE WIL SON, alias ANNIE SEATON, SOPHIA ANN WATSON, WILSON, and STUART, Office No 2573- 00, age 51, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion ruddy, hair auburn, eyes blue; may be wearing a black costume, pink dress, or a light costume and white blouse, white feather boa, large black hat trimmed black ribbon. A native of London. After selecting the above articles she tendered a crossed cheque in payment on Lloyd's Bank, Ltd., Broadstairs, dated 12th September 1911, for £ 12^ drawn in favour of Mrs. Seaton, and signed " An- nie Seaton." PETER FERGUSON, age 40 to 50, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., round shoulders, complexion fresh, hair turning grey, drooping moustache sandy. Has been employed as foreman maltster at a brewery company. Middlesbrough ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 2 7s. 6d., 31st March last.— WIL- LIAM ARMSTRONG, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 ins., complexion fresh, hair and heavy long moustache dark brown, eyes ( prominent) dark, of smart ap- pearance; dress, black morning coat, grey trou- sers, black felt hat. Was employed as a manager at a clothier's, formerly as a traveller. Absconded about 27th June last. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 29.— L e e d S ( City).— For embezzlement— JOSEPHUS ARTHUR HOLMES, age about 50, height about 6 ft., stout build, erect bearing, com- plexion fresh, hair, beard and moustache black and very stiff, turning grey, eyes ( very small) dark, sometimes wears glasses, forehead and bridge of nose flat, nostrils very prominent, heavy top lip, rather small feet, mark between one thumb and forefinger; dress, navy- blue or dark mixture suit. WILTSHIRE. 25.— Swindon ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 7th insfc. j a horse ( recovered).— WILLIAM LIT- TLE, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 7.1, ins., com- OEVONSHIRE. 30.— Torquay County).— Sentenced to 6 months imprisonment, 11th inst., for stealing lines from the entrance hall of a house at Paignton— JAMES DREW, alias FRANK LYNCH, HEN- RY DRhW, and JOE GORDON, Office No. S 29149' age 33, height 5 ft. 11 ins., complexion fresh, hr. ir dark brown, eyes grey, mole left of neck. A painter, native of London; previously convicted at Roboiougli, Plymouth and Chippenham of larceny; also to four months' imprisonment^- ALEXANDER STEWART, alias ROBERT STEWART and JOHN BROWN, Office No. S. 44277, age 31, height 5 ft. 6Ains. complexion fresh, hair light auburn, eyes grey, scar palm left hand, ring finger and little finger left hand contracted, scar oil forehead and above left eye.
