Att communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOB OF TBB POLIC* GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. itn all eases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the paynent must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted avd no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the • a « e may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announc- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of tne paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompaniid by a covering letter. 13. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yardby Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons are only accepted on payment but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. A labourer; has also been employed as a ship's fireman. C., at Wickford, 23rd ult., a strawberry roan mare pony, age 10 years, 12 hands, black mane and tail, hind legs white about 12 ins. from feet, small feet, in good condition; a set of black leather har- ness, brass mounts, and a round governess car, painted dark green, piqked out light, brass wheel caps, " Ayling, Ipswich," RoyaJ Warrant stamped thereon— A. DAY, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., stout build, red face, pimples thereon, clean shaven; dress, dark blue jacket suit, straw hat, lace boots, carried a light brown mackin- tosh. Warrant issued. 16 — Cardiff ( City).— On commitdient warrant? for 3 months in default of payment of £ 126/ 10/ 10 for an offence against the Friendly Societies Act — HENRY JOHN, age 58, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache turning grey, may now be clean shaven, small mouth, wears glasses, speaks slowly; dress, lounge suit, black bowler hat. A baker; has also been a beerhouse keeper and haulier. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. 17.— Swansea ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, a pair of light tweed trousers, with greenish stripes; 1 pair dark tweed do.; 1 pair of army braces— WALTER ANSELL, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, complexion sal- low, hair dark brown, thick moustache dark, curled at ends, eyebrows meet, faint ired birthmarks on both cheeks and left side of neck; dress, brown tweed suit with faint dark squares, green tie, black and white check cap. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.— Durs/ ey ( County).— For embezzlement — JOHN EDWARD DOUGLAS, age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., inclined to be corpulent, complexion fresh, hair ( bald in front) dark, turn- ing grey, small moustache dark, teeth rather prominent, takes short quick steps. Supposed a native of London. About 14 years ago he was employed by a firm of wholesale hardware mer- chants at Bermondsey, London. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. W — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 1 6s., and a pocket handkerchief, 29th ult.— THOMAS CHAPMAN, age about 26, height 5ft. 9ins., slight build, hair brown, black spot on ball of right eye; dress, old navy blue coat, pepper and salt colour vest, grey striped trousers, red muffler, cap, piece cut out of front of right boot. HER TFORDSHIRE. 20.— Watford ( County). — For stealing a silver watch and chain 20th July last^- JOHN MAXWELL, age 35, height 5 ft. 10£ ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes ( crossed) grey, tattooed flags, sailor, J. M., etc.', right fore- - arm, heart and arrow back right hand, High- lander, heart, tombstone, etc., left forearm; dress, dirty white cord trousers, cap. A native of Wat- ford. Warrant issued. KENT. 21.— Canterbury yCity).— For obtaining £ 7 10s. 26tli ult. by a worthless cheque for £ 10/ 10/ 10 on Lloyd's, Barnett's & Bosanquet's Bank, Ltd., 72, Lombard Street, London, No. O/ C. 58917, drawn in favour of H. Bradford, signed Bevan Douglas— A MAN, who gave the name of H. BRADFORD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion ruddy, hair auburn, clean shaved; dress, blue serge jacket suit, whit © straw hat, black band, brown boots. Represented him- self as mess steward at an officers' training col- lege, purchased goods to the value of £ 3, tendered the above cheque, and received the balance. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 22.- Chorley ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 25th ult., food, lodgings, and a bicycle, black enamelled, 24 or 25 in. frame, transfer No. 1076, Continental tyres, silver plated handle bars, rubber pedals, roller lever brakes, Ralli rims, nearly new, " John Beardsworth, Cycle and Motor Agent, Buxton," on front fork and back mudguard.— ERNEST BRANWOOD ( sup- posed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaven, butterfly, on one hand, bust of Napoleon on other; dress, dark suit, white jersey, straw hat with green band, brown shoes. Stated he was foreman of a gang of men employed by the Post Office to erect telegraph poles in the district, that he required lodgings for them, stayed one night only; he left behind a brown enamel- led bicycle, black handle lars, front lever brake, rat- trap pedals, free wheel. Warrant issued. Information to Actg- Superintendent Williams, Chorley. 23.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For stealing, 4th inst., a silver English lever hunter watch, minus glass, black nu nerals, gold pointers, small seconds finger, engine- turned cases, shield on front, maker, " Bul- len, London," on works under dust- proof cap; 1 silver graduated curb chain; 2 silver medals, one with gold centre, J. D. thereon, attached.— JOSEPH KEATING, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, walks badly; dress, blue faded jacket, blue or dark ve^ t, dark trousers^ red, white, and blue striped shirt, green muffler with large spots, green cap, light lace boots. Melton Mowbray ( County).— For housebreaking, 2nd inst., at Burton Lazars and stealing a watch ( recovered in pledge).— WIL- LIAM SOUTHGATE ( supposed false), age 33 to 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., red face, moustache ginger, heavy eyebrows, North Country or Scotch accent; dress, dark suit, striped mixture jacket, rather large green cap, brown boots, carried a brown overcoat. He stayed at a common lodging house at Oakham the previous night, stated he was a school teacher and had been at Oxford four years, obtained the names of local school masters and applied to them for assistance. LINCOLNSHIRE. 25.— Homcastle ( County).— For obtaining a gold curb albert by a worthless cheque 26th ult.— FREDERICK HAWLEY, alias FRANK HAYES and JOHN BANKS, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., stout build, complexion fair, hair grey, drooping moustache, Roman nose; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey trousers, white straw hatr black band, wearing gold watch and chain and safety pin in tie, set bright stones, carried a crook handle stick. He called at a jewellers and obtained the albert and tendered a cheque drawn on the London & Joint Stock Bank, Ltd., Whitby Branch, which has been returned marked " No Account." Warrant issued. Zo.— Tettenhall ( County).— For failing to appear to a summons under the Poor Law Act-- BERT HENRY HOWE, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey; dress, shabby clothes. SUSSEX ( East). 27. — Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing from a cricket pavilion, lst inst., a blue cricket jacket, brass buttons, X. R. H. F. H. thereon, usual pockets, small band at back, a Badminton Diary in one pocket; 1 pair white calf- skin cricket boots, size 10.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 cr 8 ins., rather stout build, complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, blue cricket jacket with brass buttons, tight fitting, dark trousers, grey cap, white calf- skin cricket toots. A tramp, may be found in casual wards or common lodging houses. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings. WA R WICKS HIRE. 28.— Birmingham ( City). — For stealing £ 71 12s.— HERBERT HUGHES, age about 27, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion dark, hail- very dark brown, eyes \ lue, no nails, and upper half of fingers of one hand badly scarred; dress, usually dark brown suit. A Dyer's and Cleaner's manager; native of Liverpool or Bootle. Ab- sconded 8tli ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 29.— Birmingham ( City).— For causing grievous bodily harm 22nd ult.— THOMAS MAC- DONALD, alias McDONOUGH, and GEORGE WHITE, Office No. 601- 02, age 34, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair trown, eyes hazel, scars right eyebrow, back of head, dots back right right hand and forearm, blue mark left wrist, left forefinger missing. A fitter; native of Liver- pool.— And THOMAS GANLEY, alias THOMAS STANLEY, Office No. 442- 06, age 34, height 5 ft. ins., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes brown, two scars left side and one on cheek bone. A fit- ter; native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Birming- ham. WORCES TERSHIRE. 30.— Malvern ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 28th ult., a lady's small dark brown Morocco handbag, handle repaired with wire; 1 do. silver Geneva keyless watch, No. 8829; 1 do. long gold chain, small heart- shape locket attached; 1 do. brown leather purse containing £ 1 2s.; 1 do. green silk scarf.— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., hair, small moustache and eyes dark; dress, dark blue serge suit, dark cap, rather strong boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sherriff, Malvern. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). 3J.— Scarborough ( Bcrovgh).— For ob- taining by a worthless cheque, a gold, open face, keyless watch, No. 1239363, and a 9- ct. gold, open curb chain, 16th ult.— FRANK HAYES, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion fair, Roman nose, dark drooping moustache; dress, brownish tweed jacket suit, or probably a black morning coat, with faint white stripes, dark tie. On 16th ult. he called at the Whitby Branch of the London Joint Stock Bank, representing him- self to be a retired Wine and Spirit Merchant from Cleethorpes, to open an account, he paid into the Bank a cheque, No. 716,427, for £ 400, drawn on the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Bank, Great Grimsby, thereby obtaining a cheque book. The cheque was forwarded to Grimsby and returned " No Account." He was at Horncastle on the 26th and Long Eaton on the 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Scar- borough. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). S2.— Goolo ( County).— For deserting his family — GEORGE WILLIAM SMITH, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., good build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, dark jacket and vest, blue overalls, sailor's cap with shiny peak, strong lace boots. Well known at Grainthorpe, Skidbrook, Saltfleet, South and North Somercoats, Lines. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Minty, Goole. 33.— Leeds ( City).— For an offence under the Bankruptcy Act.— ERNEST CECIL THOMAS, age 30, height 5 ft. 7£ ins., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, consumptive appearance; dress, dark blue serge suit. A butcher or hawker; native of moustache dark, may now be clean shaven, lisps slightly; dress, blue serge suit, usually wears a soft felt hat. He was Editor of the Union Maga- zine and Organiser of the Union. Warrant issued. A leaflet from a North Eastern Railway Calendar, an empty solution tin, and an empty pint bottle which had contained petrol were left behind in the garage, and doubtless the thief had fixed to the number plates the figures cut from the railway calendar. 4th or 5th inst., from a lock- up shop, a new " Premier " motor bicycle, 34 H. P., free engine, operated from handle bar, number on tengine, 5573, number on machine, 5906, Dunlop tyres, stand and carrier at rear, tool bags each side of carrier, horn, new " Lucas" motor lamp with old generator, machine enamelled black, red line < n rims.
