THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2882. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOK OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. • 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing a cornet ( recovered in pledge at Wellingborough, 29th ult.)— F. E. SMITH, age about 30, height • about 6 ft., complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, light check jacket and vest, dark ' trousers, new grey cap, turned up at back, Stays at common lodging or low beer houses. He called • at a band room, where members were at practice, • states he was a musician, had served in the army, was a native of Ashby de la Zouch, and asked for assistance. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Windsor ( Borough).— For fraud— TWO WOMEN, 1, age about 35, height 5 ft. 3 ins., slight build, complexion dark- appearance of a gipsy. 1, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 ins., light hair, wearing hat with feather or quill across front. They travel the country in a cart with mats and rugs, call at public houses stating they have a number of workmen coming to paint their travelling vans, and offer to leave money on ac- count for refreshments, & c. They then offer a mat or rug at an oxorbitant price and in this case obtained £ 5 for a rug worth 25s. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. OA RNARVONSHIRE. 6. — Carnarvon ( County). — Referring to Case No. 11, 4th inst., the name should be GEORGE not JOHN ATKINSON. CHESHIRE. 7.— Birkenhead ( County).— For forgery at Port Sunlight, 18th May lastr— HERBERT VAUGHAN CRUMP, alius H. CREIGHTON, and F. CROSSLAND, age 38, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, good teeth, may be false. A clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Farnworth, Birkenhead. 8.— Crewe ( County).— For housebreaking and stealing cash— A BOY, age 13 to 15, height about 5 ft. ins., stiff build, complexion rather swarthy; dress, dark jacket, blue knickers, dark cap, stockings, white canvas boots. DORSETSHIRE. 10.— Poole ( County).— For obtaining a gold albert, by a worthless cheque, No. a294492 on the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Lyme Regis Branch— JOHN TULY FULK ( supposed false), age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion ( blotchy) florid, liair and drooping moustache dark, eyes small, wearing heavy ( supposed) gold chain, charm attached; dress, dark morning coat and vest, striped trousers, bowler hat. ESSEX. 11.— Southend ( County).— For stealing a green imitation leather jewel case about 9 inches long, 6 inches wide, " Jewel Case," on lid; 1 garnet bracelet, consisting of about 9 clusters, carbuncle in centre of each, set in gold, old- fashioned, hinged, on. e hinge broken, safety chain attached, clasp broken ; 1 gold cameo bracelet, 3 cameos Venus in centre, Cupid on one side and man's head in armour the other, richly embossed, the remainder consists of about 13 bars chained together; 1 lady's hunter watch, white dial, black figures and hands, slight cracks on dial, plain case, monogram E. B. C., red and gold transfer on head, also Supplied by A. G. Hand, High Street, Cycle Works, Aldershot, thereon— GEORGE STEPHENS, age about 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, short stubbly moustache; dress, blue striped suit, white sweater, brown leggings. Davis, Aldershot. 13— Woolston ( County).— For stealing from a dwelling house at Itchen, 3rd inst., .£ 10 10s., a lady's gold buckle ring; 1 gold ring, set 3 blue stones ; 1 lady's silver watch in leather wrist strap, and 1 pair of lady's brown boots— ETHEL TYR- RELL, age 17, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark; dress, grev skirt, with black stripes, slate colour blouse, white straw hat, with black and white trimmings. A flower seller. May be found in fruit or hop gardens, or in the company of travelling showmen, absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Littlewood, Woolston. - J APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( emtinued).- KENT. 14.— Canterbury ( County).— For obtaining 2 sums of £ 25 by false pretences, 4th and 10th ult.— STANLEY GORDON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion, hair ( turning grey) and moustache ( cut close) dark, long thin face, large mouth, hollow cheeks, very deep voice; dress, navy blue jacket and trousers, plaid vest, straw hat. Is fond of billiards. He hires a furnished house in a good position, advertises in a London paper for a companion secretary to travel with him on the Continent, a cash security of £ 50 must be given, and on receipt of same, has agree ment drawn up and stamped, then informs appli- cant that he is unable to travel for a few weeks. Usually cashes deposit cheque or notes with local tradesmen. Is accompanied by a woman, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion fresh, wrin- kied, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, blue serge dress, coloured blouse, felt hat, wings each side, silver mizpah brooch; and a boy, age 15 or 16, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion pale; dress, navy blue suit, straw hat. May be found at a seaside or good residential district. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heard, County Police, Can- terbury. LANARKSHIRE. 15.— Glasgow ( City). - For failing to report - licence- holder JOSEPH CLARKE, Office No. 550- 11, age 31, height 5 ft. 4i ins., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, scar top of nose, middle of back of head, dot between right and left thumb and finger, A collier; native of Oldham. Sen- tenced at Manchester Assizes lst July, 1909, to 5 years' penal servitude for rape. Licensed 23rd March last, L. 282. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 16.— Old Trafford ( County). — For embez- zlement— SAMUEL B. COLLINS, age 31, height 5 ft. 5 ins., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes ( short- sighted, wears glasses) brown, 3 artificial teeth in front top jaw; dress, navy- blue serge coat and trousers, fancy vest. Information to Supt. Keys, Old Trafford. 17.— Accrington ( Borough).— For failing to report, licence holder THOMAS TATTERSALL, alias PILKINGTON, ROBINSON, PRINCE, etc., Office No. 823- 00, age 54, height 5 ft. 51 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, turning grey, eyes brown; scar left of forehead and upper lip, tat- tooed sailor right forearm, old injury to right thigh, scar right wrist, right leg been broken in two places, scar left of neck, ear, and wrist. An engineer, native of Haslingden Grane. Sentenced at Preston Quarter Sessions 7th April, 1909, to 3 years penal servitude for obtaining goods and money by false pretences. Licensed 8th June, 1911, G. K. P. W. aj 579. Information to the Chief Constable, Accrington. ~ LINCOLNSHIRE. 18.— Grimsby ( Borough). — For obtaining, by false pretences £ 1 5s. 0d., Hth ult.— HARRY HANNAH, alias MARSHALL, Office No. 657- 02, age 47, height 5 ft. 8A ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, slim build; scar forehead, tat- tooed anchor and crossed flags right forearm, " H. H. S. B." left forearm, star left hand; dress, navy- blue or blavk javket suit, black bowler hat, or dark cap. He took furnished rooms and showed his landlady a seaman's advance note represent- ing that he had signed on the S. S. " Dunnottar Castle." Asked her to advance him the sum named to enable him to pay some debts he had incurred and handed her the advance note with instructions that she was to draw his money three days after the vessel sailed and deduct what was due to her. This she did and when the card was presented at the shipping office it was found that he had not signed on that vessel. He has several times been convicted of similar offences. Warrant issued. NORTHUMBERLAND. £ 10 REWARD. 19.— Newcastle- upon- Tyne ( City).— For warehousebreaking, and attempted murder of a police constable, 29th ult.— TWO MEN, lst age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., stout build, full face, clean shaved, prominent cheekbones, Tyneside dialect, wearing dark clothes and cap; 2nd height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., slight build, very heavy mous- tache dark, ( supposed false), wearing dark clothes. The above reward will be paid by the Watch Committee, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, to any person or persons who may give information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offenders. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- upon- Tyne. ~ RENFREWSHIRE. 20.— Renfrew ( Burgh). — On a Sheriff's warrant for embezzling £ 24 13s. Od.— JOHN S. BEAVIS, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., very slight build, hair dark brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, low squeaky voice, has eczema on ( supposed) left ear; dress, dark tweed suit, greenish colour tweed cap. A clerk. Native of Ayrshire, has been employed as a correspondence clerk in a shipping office at Leith, may endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Chief Constable, Renfrew. SHROPSHIRE. 21.— Wellington ( County).— For stealing £ 39, 20th ult.— SAMUEL RUSHTON, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, turning grey, eyes dark; dress, dark suit, black hard hat. A carpenter; native of Dawley. May be found in company of quoit players. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United King- dom. Information to Supt. Fulcher, Wellington. S TAFFOROSHIRE. 22 — Tettenhall ( County).— For maintenance arreais— GEORGE WILLIAM HUGHES, age 48, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion fair, hair and mous- tache brown; dress, navy- blue suit, hard hat, purple colour tie, lace boots. A native of Heath Town, Nr. Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Tettenhall. It.— Stoke- on- Trent ( Borough.) — For obtaining a pair of boots and £ 2 8s. Od. by false pretences, 26th ult., by a worthless cheque on the Manchester and Couuty Bank, Moss Side Branch — ROBERT COOPER ( believed false), age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress grey tweed suit, straw hat, with black band. He passes worthless cheques at co- operative society shops by represent- ing that he is a member of another branch of the society. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Stoke- on Trent. SUFFOLK ( East). 24.— Lowestoft ( County).— For maintenance arrears, EDWARD WILLIAM BRESTER, age 30, height 5ft. 6ins., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, tattooed both arms, clasped hands, heart and true love back right hand, scar back left hand and right cheek; dress, fisherman's clothing or double- breasted blue serge suit. A native of Hales, Norfolk. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. 25.— Lowestoft ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 9s. 9d. by a worthless cheque.— WILLIAM JAMES WOOLNER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion tanned, hair brown; dress, grey check coat and trousers, buff coloured vest, either white shoes or lace boots, black soft hat or cap; states he is a male nurse; believed to be a pen- sioner from the Royal Army Medical Corps. He obtains goods or board and lodgings and presents a cheque on Barclay & Co's Bank, Bury St. Ed- munds branch for £ 2 or £ 3 more than the amount. Is known at Bury St. Edmunds. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Lowestoft. SUSSEX ( East). 26.— Lewes ( County).— For stealing, lst inst., a nearly new black enamelled bicycle, No. 7899, lined red, Whiteley's, Kildare Club Transfer on head, upturned handlebars, black grips, 24 in. frame, Warwick tyres, 28 x 1J plated rims and spokes, 2 bar brakes, rubber pedals, saddle, tool bag, usual tools, plated alarm bell, black pump, by A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 to 4 ins., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) and slight moustache ginger; dress, light grey suit, straw or green slouch hat, white canvas shoes or brown boots. Information to Supt. Vine, Lewes. 27.— Brighton ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee) 8/- 26th ult.— CHARLES KIMBER, alias BISHOP, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion sunburnt, hair dark, clean shaved, scar under left eye; dress, dark green'jacket and vest, light grey trousers, straw hat. Left here 26th ult. May be found assisting boatmen or fishermen at seaside towns. Native of East Croy- don. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable. Brighton. 28.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing £ 4 5s. Od. from a bedroom, 2nd inst— ADOLF VEGG ( stated he was a Dane), age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) ginger, small light moustache; dress, grey tweed suit, straw hat, black band, white silk tie, white canvas shoes. He engaged a bedroom and stated he was going to work at a local boarding house, absconded 2 nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Eastbourne.. 29.— Hastings ( Borough). — For stealing,. 27th J une dast, a Oallcott bicycle, free wheel enam- elled black, plated rims, black centre, 28 x 1A in.. wheels, upturned handlebars, all black grips, roller lever brakes, brown saddle and saddlebag, pumpt with " J. S. Wallis, St. Leonards" thereon CHRISTOPHER VALENTINE CHAPMAN, age 19, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, blue suit, red badge oil right arm, blue peak cap.. Stated he was in the merchant service. Is Veil known at Folkestone. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings- WAR WICKSHIRE. 30.— Stratford- on- Avon ( County).— for stealing 7th inst., a Royal Enfield bicycle, much worn, usual parts plated, black enamelled, straight handlebars, rat trap pedals, back mud- guard broken, two roller lever brakes, Michelin back tyre, plated lamp and bell attached ; 1 lady's dark morocco leather purse, silver clasp contain- ing 15s. 2id. GEORGE HUGHES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., hair dark brown, eyes grey, slight brown stubby moustache ; dress, green- ish brown jacket, dark fancy vest, light brown, trousers, with dark stripe, light check cap, dark tie. Stated he was a carpenter. See Case No. 38, 21st ult., and Case No. 27, 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cusack, Stratford- on- Avon. WILTSHIRE. 81.— Salisbury ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings 28th ult., a lady's small gold keyless watch, No. 19183, white dial, gold hands, Roman numerals; 1 long gold " secret link neck chain,— FRANK BURTON ( supposed false), age about 40, height about 5 ft. 8 ins., complexion dark sunburnt, hair and moustache dark, small dark piercing eyes, tattooed left forearm; dress, pepper and salt mixture suit, green cap, wearing a green shirt and tie, button boots. Has in his possession a nearly- new free wheel bicycle, black enamelled, usual parts plated, black celluloid grips, front and back brakes, bell and tool bag attached. He ob- tained lodgings and stated that lie had come from Basingstoke by road and that he was a foreman ganger in charge of men at Wallop, near Andover, employed in surveying; is addicted to drink, and fond of horse racing and billiards, heavy cigarette smoker. 32 - Salisbury ( City). For embezzling £ 8 8s. on or about the 20th May, 1911, also for neglecting his three children.— ERNEST GEORGE BUD- DEN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., stout, ish build, clean shaven, round face, dark hair; dress, dark blue suit, muffler. An ostler. He ab- sconded 24th May last and went to Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Salisbury. ~~ WORCESTERSHIRE. 88.— Evesham ( County)— For stealing at Pershore, 19 th ult., a. bicycle ( recovered)— GEORGE HUGHES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache, eyes grey; dress, pale green jacket and trousers, fancy vest, with brown and black stripes, dark cap, brown boots, apparently blacked. A native of Droitwich. ( See Case No- 38, 21st. ult.). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cope, Evesham. 34.— R e dd i t C h ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a violin 8th January last— WILLIAM BURGESS ( supposed false), alias ALBERT DE GONCOURT, age about 30, height 6 ft., rather slight build, stoops when walking, complexion fresh, hair ( rather long and bushy behind) sandy, eyes grey, rather large nose, clean shaved; dress, brownish grey jacket suit, light cap, lace boots, or long morning coat and light straw hat. A pianist, music teacher, and teacher of languages. Supposed a native of Maidstone, where he stated he was employed as a school teacher. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Hayes, Redditch.
