No; 31.] 367 NEW ZEALAND POLICE GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. WELLINGTON, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1911. NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which _ reports are required to be furnished for the com- pilation of the Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reports have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspected of theft, it should be stated whether the pro perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for which owners cannot be found, shall be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Gazette should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in charge of out- stations will forward them direct. ARSON. WAIMATE.— At 4.- 30 a. m. on 11th ultimo a fire, whereby a large quantity of merchandise was considerably damaged, was discovered in the business premises of the CANTER- BURY FARMERS' CO- OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION ( LI- MITED), and on 31st ultimo a Coroner and jury inquired into the cause and origin thereof, and recorded the following verdict: " That the fire was wilfully caused by some person or persons unknown " New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, dark- brown bair, heavy dark moustache, bracelet and emblem on right arm, first joint of left middle finger missing ; dressed in dark- grey Buit, dark- grey tweed overcoat, and broad- rimmed black slouch hat. Offender, by means of a valueless oheque for £ 20, obtained a Gladstone bag and sundry articles of drapery, valued at £ 16 19s., and the sum of £ 3 1 « . from James Samuel Dickson, draper, Queen Street. He was recently discharged from New Plymouth Prison, where he had been confined as an habitual criminal. AUCKLAND.— 10th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Prison for seven days in default of paving £ 2 10s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during the currency of his prohibition order, Alfred Ernest Williams, alias Johnson, age forty- four, height 5 ft. 2J in., labourer, native of Tasmania, medium build, dark complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes, broad nose, scar on right jaw, left hand, and left ankle. AUCKLAND.— 26th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the fu'ure maintenance of his unborn illegiti- mate child, Alfred Lewis, age about twenty- three, height 5 ft. 8 in., cook, native of New Zealand, stout build, fair complexion and hair, round features, large nose, clean- shaved ; dressed in black trousers, grey coat, and hard hat. Complainant, Mabel Trembatu, 30, Cross Street, Newton. PERSONS WANTED. AUCKLAND. — G. Lister, wanted on warrant for desert- ing the s. s. " Paparoa": It has been ascertained that offender's correct name is G. Lester. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 301.) ( F. P. 245/ 11.) AUCKLAND.— 27th ultimo, on warrant for failing to prcvide his wife and five children with adequate mainten- ance, Francis George Henry White, age thirty- nine, height 5 ft. 8 in., master mariner, native of New Zealand, stout build, dark complexion, hazel eyes, heavy moustache, American flag on one arm, and mermaid on the other arm. He was last heard of at Wellington. AUCKLAND.— 29th June last, on warrant for inciting prisoner William Baker to resist Constable Collins in the execution of his duty, Trevor McLeod, age thirty, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, bronzed complexion, dark hair ; dressed in dark green suit and felt hat. AUCKLAND.— 27th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Henry James Reynolds, anas Harry Lloyd, alias Harry Evans, alias John Harvey, alias Jack Lewis, age fifty- one, height 5 ft. 6J in., cook and labourer, native of NEWTON.— 25th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a ladies' gold dress- ring ( recovered), value £ 3, the property of Simon Feldman, second- hand dealer, Pitt Street, J. GISBOENE.— 22nd ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Gisborne Police Gaol for ten days in default of paying £ 3 5s. fine and costs for being a stowaway on the s. s. " Mokoia," Frederick Robinson, alias Frank or Francis Rob- son, age twenty- seven, height 5 ft. 7 in., steward and labourer, native of Australia, slim build, sallow complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, scar [ on left cheek and elbow, birth- mark on right hand; dressed in greenish- coloured suit and black hard hat. Lewis Stephen Jeffrey, age twenty- two, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair complexion and hair, scar on left ear, left ring- finger crooked ; dressed in light- coloured striped- tweed suit and cap. MASTEETON.— 29th ultimo, on warrant for false pre- tences, Louis Grant, age about twenty- four, height about 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, very fair complexion, round features, clean- shaved ; dressed in brown suit and grey cap. Offender, by means of a value- less cheque for £ 15 Ss. 6d., obtained £ 6 from Frederick Charles Henry Cotter, storekeeper, Te Wharau. WESTPORT.— 17th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Westport Police Gaol for seven days in default of paying £ 1 7s. 6d. costs for medical treatment when remanded for drunkenness and vagrancy, John Butler, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. 7 in., miner, native of England, strong build, fair complexion, light- brown hair, brown eyes; fond of drink; dressed in blue- serge suit and black hard hat. CHRISTCHURCH.— 31st ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide h s wife and child with adequate maintenance, John Michael Burke, age twenty- eight, height 6 ft., ex railway- porter, native of Ireland, slight build, dark com- plexion, black hair, grey eyes, clean- shaved, scar over right eye, erect gait; dressed in greenish- coloured tweed trousers, navy- blue coat and vest, and green- tweed overcoat; wears a silver dog- pattern pendant. His photograph is filed in the Inspector's Office, Christchurch. He is supposed to have gone to Sydney. Complainant, Gracie Burke, 28 Aberdeen Street. CHRISTCHURCH.— 28th ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his four children, John Whitford, age forty- one, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, fair moustache, " J. CHRISTCHURCH.— 3rd instant, on warrant for failing to provide his wife and child with adequate maintenance, Arthur Edward Lupton, age twenty- nine, height about 5 ft. 4 in., musician, native of England, slim build, fair com- plexion, auburn hair, blue eyes, clean- shaved, scar on left side of head, growth in one nostril, high cheek- bones; gene- rally dressed in blue suit. He was last heard of at New Plymouth, where he conducted the " Hindoo Magic Fortune- telling Show," and may be accompanied by Annie Edgar, age about eighteen, height about 5 ft. 3 in., thin build, dark complexion and hair ; well dressed. Complainant, Christina Ann Maria Lupton, 176 Linwood Avenue, Linwood. DUNEDIN.— 5th ultimo, on warrant for theft, Gilbert McMeeking, age twenty- two, height 5ft. 7in., clerk and traveller, native of Glasgow, Scotland, medium build, fair complexion and hair, clean- shaved, theatrical appearance; dressed in Harris- tweed suit and cap. Offender received £ 1 7s. from John Byfield on terms requiiing him to account for it to Nathaniel Reed, produce- merchant, but fraudulently omitted to account for or pay the same. He is a recent arrival in the Dominion, and spoke of going to a friend named McKinnon at Tokomaru, Other charges are pending. DUNEDIN.— 12th June last, that he may be compelled to maintain his children, inmates of St. Vincent de Paul's Industrial School, Henry Philip Cranley, age thirty- nine, height 5 ft 9 in., labourer and groom, native of Lawrence, New Zealand, medium build, reddish complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, reddish moustache only ; fond of drink. INVERCARGILL.— 19th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his illegitimate child, Michael McAuliffe, alias Martin Fullerton, age twenty- three, heigtit 5 ft. 8 in., tailor, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, blue eyes, one upper front tooth missing, unfinished heart on left forearm, scar on left little finger; fond of drink; dressed in dark suit and cap. WANGANUI.— Arthur Thorburn, inquired for in con- nection with the support of his children, inmates of the Wellington Receiving Home, has been located at Palmerston North by Constable Lister, Marton police. LINCOLN. — Richard Herbert Collins, alias Dick Gordon, age nineteen, height 5ft. 9in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, fresh complexion, dark- brown curly hair, brown eyes, snake tattooed round left forearm; dressed in dark- tweed coat, brown saddle- tweed trousers, and black hard hat. LINCOLN.— Robert Dickson Warden, age seventeen, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, pale complexion, brown hair, bald patch on back of head, grey eyes, snake, cross, and " R." tattooed on right fore- arm, dot on left hand, scar on palm of right hand; dressed in grey- tweed coat and vest, greenish- brown tweed trousers, and light - tweed cap ; olothing numbered 116. Inquiry is requested to ascertain the whereabouts of Henri Thebault, age thirty- three, tall, strong build, fresh complexion, fair hair and mouscaohe. Seven years ago he left his wife, with whom he has not communicated during the past three years, and she has been informed that he is living in this Dominion, and also that there is every proba- bility of his having changed his name. Inquiry by the Acting- Consul for France, Auckland, on behalf of Madame Suzanne Thebault. ( 11/ 1637.) WANGANUI. — Since 20th ultimo, Walter Joseph Hartcher, age twenty- six, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., bookseller, native of New South Wales, stout build, sallow complexion, dark- brown hair, large brown eyes, small mouth, soar on one cheek, very reserved manner. Fears are entertained for his safety, INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND. • SYDNEY.— Inquiry is requested to ascertain the where- abouts of Thomas James Taylor, age between twenty five and thirty, height 5ft. 6 in., labourer and cab driver, native of New South Wales, medium build, stooping gait, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, hazel eyes, one upper front tooth missing, right arm has been broken. SYDNEY.— Special inquiry is requested to trace the where- abouts of Ernest Sydney Stephens, who was last seen at the Grand Central Coffee Palace, Sydney, in July, 1910. He is twenty- eight years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in. high, slight build, 10 stone 7 lb. weight, fair complexion and hair, moustache only ; scar near right eye made by boot- protector; a few teeth missing from front; of sober habits ; indifferent health ; may wear a gold claw- ring, set with a ruby.
