T H E POLICE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 19, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2858. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ps. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. .4 remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. G. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. — 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. SPECIAL NOTICE. In certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by the Police Forces under Home Office ciroular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient for the purpose; but if a photograph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to com- plete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 4.— N Division. — For stealing £ 3 3s. — ARTHUR HENRY CLARK, alias CHARLES CLARK, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 ins., good build, complexion fair, round features, hair and moustache brown, inclined to ginger, eyes grey, turns his feet outwards; dress, blue jacket and vest, grey trousers and cap, dark tie. A native of Braybourne, Cambs. Was employed as a car- man by a laundry company at Tottenham. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CUMBERLAND. 8.— Wig ton ( County).— For shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm, 12th inst., at Aspatria— THOMAS DIXON, age 47, height 5 ft. 5 ins., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair, moustache and eyes brown, round shoulders, slouching gait; dress, brown suit} with green stripes, green oap, lace boots. A coalminer; na- tive of Aspatria. One eye may be somewhat dis- coloured, and may have several cuts or bruises on face, and is said to have recently injured one of his feet, which may cause him to walk rather lame. Warrant issiied. Information to Supt. Veitch, Wigton. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9.— Denbigh ( County).— For housebreaking at Ruthin, and stealing a china tea service and enamelled plates ( part recovered)— A xuAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 7 ins., slight build), 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( ctnUmued)— complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, stam- mers badly, wearing light overcoat, dark cap, light boots, all worn. Had in his possession a quantity of rabbit skins, which he may dispose of at marine store dealers. Last heard of at Priory, Denbigh, 25th ult. Information to Supt. Woollam, Denbigh, or Insp. Harvey, Ruthin. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— RenishaW ( County). — For burglary, shopbreaking and office- breaking at Dronfield, 29th ult.— JOHN THOMAS HIBBERT, age 25, height 5 ft. 4i ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut scar left side of head, J. 149 and dots left forearm, anchor, bracelet and dots back of left hand; dress, black jacket suit and cap, black tie, may be wearing a muffler, light lace boots. A native of Sheffield. Had in his pos- session a white handkerchief with black border. Previously convicted of larceny and receiving at Sheffield and Penrith. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. DORSETSHIRE. 11.— Dorchester ( County).— For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences at Poole, 21st March last HECTOR RAYNOR SUTHERLAND, age 3o to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion, hair and moustache dark, wears glasses; dress, black frock coat, dark trousers, silk hat. Believed a native of London. Stated he represented the firm of Sutherland and Co., Finsbury Park, London, ad- vertised for canvassers, music teachers, and mana- gers for local branches, requiring deposits of £ 10 to £ 100 from applicants. The only instrument he been known to supply is the " Sutherland Piano Harp." He left Jersey on 11th inst. for France, and it is thought he will shortly return uO England. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Dorchester. black jacket and vest, blue jersey, old military fine cord trousers, dark grey cap, dark blue muf- fler. A general help; native of London. Has been employed at a coal depot. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Southend- on- Sea. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 18.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 4 17s. 2d„ 6th inst,— WILLIAM CASWELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion fresh, slight moustache brown, tattooed W. Caswell right, nude female muscle of left forearm; dress dark coat, very large check pattern vest and trousers, dark muffler, light check cap. A collier; native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 19. - Bristol ( City).— For stealing a lady's gold watch ( recovered) and a lady's 18- ct. gold ring set with a diamond— ROSE PEARCE , age ' J2, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 ins., hair dark brown, high cheek bones, slightly upturned nose; dress, ^ lark clothes; carried a rush dr€ 8s basket. A domestic servant; native of Bristol. May apply for a situation through registry offices. Absconded 17th February last. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. ESSEX. 12— Braintrae ( County).— For stealing a Swift bicycle, nearly new, enamelled green, 25 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, 1910, 1A in. Dunlop tyres, plated rims, green centre, upturned handlebars, roller lever brakes, number either 438450 or 438451- - CHARLES ALLEN, age 40, height 5 ft. lli ins., slight build, complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, grey striped trousers, baggy at knee, blue coat, green cap, muffler. A native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cowell, Braintree. Vd— Dunmow ( County). — On commitment warrant for non- payment of 14/- fine and costs imposed for using indecent language— WILLIAM PRIOR, age 37, height 5 ft. 4ins., complexion fresh, oval face, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, " W. P." back of left arm. A labourer; na- tive of Great Sampford. He is also an important, witness at the Essex Adjourned Quarter Sessions, 24th inst., in a case of corn stealing. May be found working on a farm. Information to Supt. Scott, Dunmow. 11.- Southend ( County).— For obtaining 96 table knives, 5 pairs carvers, and other goods by false pretences, 16th December, 1910— SAMUEL LOMAS, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., com plexion pale, hair brown, eyes dark brown; dress, light tweed suit, bowler or straw hat. An auctioneer native of Turnditch. Warrant issued. 15.— Southend ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) 10th inst., a Renowned bicycle, 28 by 1J in wheels, 23 in. frame, black enamelled, lined red, front mudguard extended, upturned handlebars, 2 roller lever brakes, plain saddle, Clyton tyres, 2 repair bands on back tyre— ERNEST HILL, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark suit, white straw hat with black band. Stated he was a chauf feur. Warrant issued. 16.— Southend ( County). - For stealing, 10th inst., a Wincycle bicycle, 26 by 1J in. wheels, 24 in frame, black enamelled, upturned handlebars, rol lei lever front brake, 3- coil spring saddle, " Rey nold's" chain, rat- trap pedals, steel mudguards Clipper tyres ALLISON, age 20, height 5 ft 7 or 8 ins., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown clean shaved, of Jewish appearance; dress, green grey suit and cap, brown leggings. Warrant issued. 17.— Southend County).— For stealing £ 2 10s., at Canvoy Island, 26th ult.— THOMAS SMITH., age 19, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion swarthy, hair dark, eyes grey, very lpng fingers and hands, one leg shorter than other; dress, HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 7 5s., 14th inst.— A MAN, age 17, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ins., slight build, complexion and hair dark, defect in right eye; dress, navy blue suit, brown overcoat, greenish cap, nailed boots. 21.— Alton ( County).— For stealing at Bordon Camp, 9th inst., a Popular Alder bicycle, No. 11713, 24 in. frame, black enamelled, green lines, dropped handlebars, back brake, transfer " Phil- lips Bros., Aldershot," Popular Alder on head and back mudguard— GEORGE BOND, age 20, height 5 ft. 1\ ins., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue. Is an absentee from the 2nd Middlesex Regiment, wearing khaki uniform. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 22. — Andover ( County\— For stealing 3 suits of clothes— MICHAEL O'SHEA, age 21|, height 5 ft. 5£ ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scars across lower part of spine, 11 front of right shin. A native of Lambeth. Is a de- serter from the West Riding Regiment. Warrant issued. 23.— AndOVer ( County). — For stealing a wheelbarrow ( recovered)— HENRY JACKSON, Office No. 2190- 10, age 31, height 5 ft. 7| ins., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; tattooed nude woman front and cross flags, bust of sailor, back right forearm, " I. L. A. S.," butterfly, heart, cross- swords front left forearm, head back left hand; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark trou- sers and cap. A travelling gardener; native of Brockley. Warrant issued. 26.— Fareham ( County). — For non- payment of £ 3 6s. maintenance arrears— LEWIS OLD- FIELD, age 58, height 5 ft. 4 ins., slight build, sloping shoulders, complexion sallow, long nose, hair ( turning grey) brown, generally clean shaven, now said to be wearing a moustache, eyes grey, throws his knees outwards when walking; dress, tweed suit. A coachman;, native of Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire. Now believed to be employed as a cowman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. It — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For leaving his child chargeable to the parish — GEORGE THOMAS WOODS, age 28, height about 5 ft. 6 ins., serpent tattooed on back, flag on one arm, Queen's head and shamrock on chest, necklace cf flowers around chest and back. Has served in tiie Dorsetshire Regiment, also in H. M. Navy; was invalided from the latter. Has been employed as a milkman. * « Warrant issued. 28.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining Is. by false pretences— JOHN HAMPTON SHAW, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes brown, bad teeth; dress dark suit, cap. Has been a domestic in the Royal Navy. He calls upon boarding- house proprietors, etc., states he wishes to obtain apartments for naval officers, also obtains money for the purpose of registering their names in ships' books. POMS as a captain's steward. Has been several times previously convicted. Warrant issued. - 29.— Portsmouth ( Borough).- For leaving hi* wife and children chargeable to the parish cf Portsmouth— WILLIAM CREASEY, afc/ s BART- LETT, and ROSE, Office No. 814- 99 ( see Illus- trated Circular 97, figure 25), age 50, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion ruddy, hair light, eyes grey; dress, dark striped suit, blue muffler, green cap. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 30.— Southampton ( Borough).— For bas- tardy arrears and costs— HENRY BROWN, age 41, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion ruddy, hair turning grey, wart under right eye. A farmer. Warrant issued. 31— Southam iton ( Borough). — For em- bezzling £ 2 4s. 5d.— THOMAS A. JACKSON, age 28, height 5 ft. 10J ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, well spoken, of smart ap- pearance. A native of Kendal, Westmoreland. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southamp ton. HER TFORDSHIRE. 32— Watford ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 Is. by false pretences 9th instant— F. LLOYD, alias WILLIAM DUCE, LOUIS TABOUR, FRED BISHOP, GEORGE CROFT, START, etc., Office No. 2246- 02, age 44, height 5 ft. 2 ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, tattooed " E Duce, born Nov., ' 97," right forearm, mole right side of neck; dress, dark clothes and cap; spoke with North- country accent. Called upon a wine and spirit merchant, and re- presented that he was a foreman on a large con- tract at Aylesbury, and ordered a case of whisky. He called later, stating that his boy had lost the railway tickets of his men, and obtained the £ 1 Is., saying it would be refunded by the railway com- pany. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Liverpool ( City). — For obtaining by false pretences, 18th inst, a " James" motor cycle, enamelled French grey, Kemsall tyres, " James " crest on front, band brakes and hub, handle starting, No. 90914. identification mark IB) 28.— T. E. LAWSON, age about 35, height about 5ft. 5ins., round face, hair and moustache dark ; dress, blue serge jacket suit. Represented himself to be a doctor at the Skin and Cancer Hospital, Liverpool, has casually been employed asan X- Ray operator. Stated he belonged to Bradford. Warrant issued.
