AUCKLAND.— 18th ultimo, on warrant for forging and uttering a cheque for £ 9 3a. to Maurice O'Connor, hotel- keeper, Auckland, H. J. Barrett, or Darling ( names probably fictitious), age about twenty- nine, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of Australia, medium build, brown hair, clean- shaved, blue eyes, ridge on one or both thumb- nails ; dressed in blue- grey suit and straw hat. The cheque was on the Bank of Australia, Auckland, purporting to be drawn by W. R. Daveney. It was indorsed by accused, H. J. Barrett. A man named Darling was employed by Mr. Daveney, and the signature on the cheque resembles his writing. AUCKLAND.— 31st ultimo, on warrant for obtaining £ 6 from John E. Hunt, hotelkeeper, Papakura, by means of a valueless cheque, Evelyn V. Kitson, age twenty- seven, height 5ft. 9in., about 10st. weight, slim build, brown hair, small brown moustaohe only, bottom front teeth missing, small chin; dressed in grey or blue suit, boater hat or cap, carries a silver- mounted square cane. Offender represented himself as one of the English nobility, and represents that he has letters signed by the Premier of Tasmania ( which may be forgeries) and has a distinguished visitor's railway- pass over the New Zealand Railways. Other charges pending. NOTICE.— For instructions as to the manner in which reports are required to bo furnished for the compila- tion of tile Police Gazette see Gazette No. 1 of this year. The arrest of offenders described in the Police Gazette, or respecting whom crime reportB have been forwarded for insertion in the Gazette, should be promptly notified by the member of the Force effecting the arrest. When notifying the arrest of persons charged with theft or suspeoted of theft, it should be stated whether the pro- perty stolen, or any portion of it, has been recovered. A description of property supposed to be stolen, found in the possession of offenders, for whioh owners cannot be found, 1 should be furnished for insertion in the Gazette. All communications concerning this Qazeite should be addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, and the envelope marked " For Gazette." Members of the Force in oharge of out- stations will forward them direct. AUCKLAND.— 2nd December last, on warrant of com- mitment to Auckland Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £ 2 10s. fine and costs for a breach of prohibition order, Percival H. Robert Hoiyier, age thirty- three, height 6ft. 1 in., traveller and hawker, native of England, very slight build, fair complexion, brown hair, clean- shaved, consumptive appearance ; dressed in green coloured suit, straw hat, soft shirt, and very high collar; generally carries a black bag. TE AWAMUTU.— A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Thomas Higginson Bond, to compel his attendance as a witness in the case Police v. George Washington Long, attempted murder. Description: Age thirty- two, height 5 ft. 5 in., medium build, fresh complexion, clean- shaved, shot- wounds in left cheek. He was seen in Wellington on the 10th instant, and is supposed to have gone to Sydney. TAUMAHUNUI.— 8th instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for one month in default of paying £ 10 13s. fine and costs for sly- grog selling, Alexander Manchan. age about twenty- four, height about 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., hotel porter and ship's steward, native of Scotland, rather stout build, smart appearance, full fresh face, olean- shaved, black hair, speaks with a strong Scotch accent, may seek employment about hotels or on a boat; fond of drink. ELTHAM.— 5th December last, on warrant of commit- ment to New Plymouth Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 2 3s. fine and costs for theft, Thomas Stanley, alias E. Watson, age twenty- four, height 5 ft. 9$ in., sea, man and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build- fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, oval face ; dressed in dark- grey suit and oap; shabby appearance. WANOANUI.— 13th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Prison for twenty- four hours in default of pay- ing 10s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Adam KcKeown, alias McEwen, age forty- six, height 5 ft. 2 § in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, clean shaved; right eye glass ; dressed in blue suit and hard black hat. BULL'S.— 17th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 1 5s. fine and costs for being drunk and disorderly, George Kenney, age fifty- six, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of Canada, stout build, fair hair, clean- shaved except fair moustache, bald on top of head, speaks a good deal about Canada; dressed in dark coat and vest and grey- tweed trousers ; carried a swag. 123 NEW ZEALAND POLICE GAZETTE. . [ FEB. 2' 2 WELLINGTON.— 11th instant, that he may be compelled to pay part of arrears due for the maintenance of his three children, inmates of the Wellington Receiving Home, Wil- liam Johnson, alias Charles William Johnston, age forty- seven, height 5 ft. 8 in., coach- painter, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair turning grey, long brown waxed moustache which he is continually curling, grey eyes, large nose ; dresses well. He was working at his trade in Wellington, and promised to pay some of the amount due, but left his employment at Christ mas last, and spoke or going to Wanganui or Auckland. WELLINGTON.— 7th instant, that he may be compelled to pay arrears due for the maintenance of his three children, inmates of the Wellington Receiving Home, William Alfred Barrow, age forty- one, height 5 ft. 4J in., labourer, native of New Zealand, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, sharp nose, scar on left side of abdomen and on right side of forehead, wart on left hand. MOUNT COOK ( WELLINGTON).— 26th December last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for seven days in default of paying £ 2 10s. fine and costs for being found on siy- grog premises, William Johnson ( known as Guesser Johnson), age twenty- nine, height 5 ft. 4 in., ex- jockey, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, light- brown hair, grey eyes, scar on top of left shoulder; dressed in shabby brown suit and cap. ( See Police Gazette, 1901, page 257.) BLENHEIM. — Edgar Charles Quartly, wanted on warrant for a breach of the Bankruptcy Act : It has been ascertained by Detective J. Powell that the offender is now residing at Burnside, Adelaide, South Australia. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 24.) CHRISTCHUBCH.— 10th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Frank Gallagher, age about thirty, height 5ft. 8in. or 9 in., horse- trainer, native of New Zealand, stout build, clear complexion, black straight hair ( parted on right side), dark- brown eyes, oleau- shaved. Complainant, Ada Crawford. CHRISTCHURCH.— 7th instant, on warrant for disobeying an order of Court to pay 10s. a week for the maintenance of his wife, George Tree, age thirty- seven, height about 5 ft. 7 in., cook, native of Kent ( England), slight build, fair complexion, light- brown hair, blue eyes, clean - shaved ; usually wears a grey suit and cloth cap; walks quickly, usually with one hand in his trousers - pocket. He was recently employed as second cook on the dining- car between Dunedin and Christchurch. Photograph filed in the In- spector's Office, Christchurch. ( See Police Gazette, 1908, page 42.) LYTTELTON.— 6th instant, on warrant for being absent without leave from the s. s. " Waimate," A. Grimwood, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 4 in., soulleryman and butcher, native of England, slim build, fair complexion ; dressed in dirty tweed suit. A reward of £ 2 is offered for his apprehen- sion. AMBERLEY.— 20th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on Frederick Thomas Hayman, blacksmith, W. C. Morris, age thirty- six, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, dark hair, rather small eyes, small fair moustache only. Offender gave com- plainant a valueless cheque for £ 7 on the Bank of New Zealand, Kaiapoi, in payment of an account of £ 4, and received a balance of £ 3. He is also wanted at Rakaia for a similar offence. RAKAIA.— 28th ultimo, on warrant for obtaining £ 2 from George Pluck, storekeeper, by means of a valueless cheque, W. C. Morris, age thirty- five, height 5 ft. 10 in., supposed horse- dealer, supposed native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, hair rather dark, small eyes, small fair moustache only; dressed in riding breeches and leggings, dark coat and vest, and Panama hat. He was driving a medium- size chestnut horse in a gig, and repre- sent to complainant that he had money in the Bank of New Zealand, Kaiapoi, and was a buyer of sheep- skins and a horse- dealer. The cheque was returned from the bank there marked " Account olosed." ( See preceding paragraph.) WAIMATE.— 25th April last, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Elizabeth Costello, with adequate means of support, Michael Costello, age forty- five, height 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in., bootmaker, native of Ireland, dark com- plexion, black hair, clean- shaved except dark moustache, dark- brown eyes, long pointed nose, strong build, about 13 st weight, broad shoulders; generally wears navy- blue serge suit. He was last heard of at New Plymouth on above date. He was in business as bootmaker at Tukituki, near Waipawa, about two years ago. ( See Police Gazette, 1909, page 475, and 1910, page 117.) OAMARU.— 19th December last, on warrant of commit- ment to Lyttelton Prison for two months tor disobej ing an order of Court to pay 12s. a week for the maintenance of his wife, Robert Lambert Waterworth, age twenty- one, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, clean- shaved ; may be wearing riding- pants and leggings ; larrikin style of walking, with one hand in pocket. AUCKLAND.— Thomas Chappell has been served with a copy of minute of order by Sergeant Keep, Newton police. ( See Police Gazette, 1910, page 499.) AUCKLAND. — John Morton Wylie, deserter from H. M. S. He is identical with Frederick Hughes, alias Alexander Chad wick ( See Police Gazette, 1909, page 474, and 1908, page 492.) GISBORNE. — Robert Hastie, inquired for, has been found drowned. His body was washed up on the beach at Gisborne. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 40.) HAWERA.— Frank Blake, default of maintenance, has been arrested by Detective Connolly, Gisborne police, and remanded. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 45.) BOLL'S.— William Robertson, theft, has been arrested by Constable Breen, Bull's police, and the case withdrawn. ( See Police Gazette, 1911, page 37.) TENUI.— Frank Saunders, theft: Warrant cancelled. AUCKLAND.— 25th ultimo, from CALVERT PRODSHAM, a gentlemen's 9 ct. gold double chain, long plain links with one or two links between ( see No. 21 of Illustrations), a gold- mounted greenstone pendant attached, about 2in. long, a plain silver sovereign- case to hold sovereigns and half- sovereigns attached to one end ; value, £ 10. Complainant gave the chain to two Men in the United Service Hotel to look at, who decamped with it. Descriptions: First, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, clean- shaved, dark hair and complexion, hard features ; dressed in dark suit and hard hat. Second, age about twenty- three, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, clean- shaved, light- brown hair ; supposed dressed in greenish- coloured suit and Btraw hat. Both can be identified. AUCKLAND.— 23rd ultimo, from Bridgewater Road, the property of JOHN JAMES SUTTON, chemist, a gentlemen's black- enamelled Rudge- Whitworth bicycle, No. 432579, 26 in. wheel, nickel rim3 ( slightly rusted), new rat- trap pedals; value, £ 12. OHAEAWAI.— Between the 8th and 15th ultimo, from the farm of SAMUEL RADOJOKOVICH, a five- year- old Here ford bullock, branded " 70 " on rump, circular punch- hole in off ear, value £ 7; two red steers, three years old, branded " V—," snip out of top and bottom of off ears, value £ 4 each : a red Poley steer, two years old, branded " R 6," semi- circular snip out of bottom of off ear, value £ 3 ; a roan cow, five years old, no brands or earmarks, value £ 5 ; two heifers, two years old, " R 6 " on rump : also two steers the property of J. B. CLARKE, one red colour with a little white on it, the other a very light roan, both branded " C" on rump, punch- holes in centre of near ear, value £ 4 10s. each. Identifiable. HAMILTON.— 23rd ultimo, from the bedroom of JEFFERY VENNING, at Wisharl's B ardinghouse, a ladies' gold ring, set with three diamonds arid two pearls or two diamonds and three pearls, value £ 5; a gold and greenstone bracelet, value £ 4. A man who gave the name of R. Matthews sold the bracelet for 6s. 6d. on the above date to a second- hand dealer. Description: Age about twenty- one, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, fair complexion ana hair, clean- shaved ; dressed in old brown suit and cap ; loutish appearance. He slept in the boardinghou^ e on the 22rid ultimo and left on the morn- ing of the 23rd, riding a new bicycle. He is supposed to be identical with John Mathews, alias Ward. PALMERSTON NORTH.— 20th or 21st ultimo, from an out- house at Baigent's Boardinghouse, Longburn, the property of JOHN FLANAGAN, a gentlemen's Rudgo - Whitworth bicycle, No. 588155, Edie Coaster hub, outrigger handles, 23 in. frame, almost new ; value, £ 16. PALMERSION NORTH.— Between the 3rd and 6th December last, from George Street, the property of MENZIES ARCHI- BALD, farm hand, a gentlemen's English B. S. A. bicycle, No. 25372, black- enamelled 24 in. frame, free- wheel, back- pedalling brake, celluloid mud- guards ; value, £ 10. Identifi- able. Identifiable. WELLINGTON. — 21st or 22nd ultimo, from CHARLES ONYON, at Trentham Racecourse or Wellington, a gentle- men's open- faced gold lever watch, No. 24748, " C. CHRISTCHURCH.— 23rd November last, from the railway- station, Christchurch, the property of EDWARD LAGAN, a brown- leather Gladstone bag, with plate on side engraved " J. Mullen, Ashburton Hotel," containing a grey- tweed knicker suit, a pair of green- tweed knickers, a black- tweed knicker suit, six white soft shirts, six linen double collars ( some marked with complainant's name), knitted ties of different colours, two grey- flannel shirts, a green- coloured travelling- rug valued at £ 1 10s.; total value, £ 6 10s. Identi- fiable. SUMNER.— Between 23rd and 29th ultimo, from Taylor's Mistake, the property of DUNCAN ALLEN FRASER, a Winchester pea- rifle, cavity in butt for ramrod, value 15s. ; a pair of opera- glasses ; a white blanket with a hole in the corner ; and a dark- coloured blanket, value £ 2 5s. Iden- tifiable. DUNEDIN.— 28th ultimo, from the bedroom of ELLEN WARREN, Castle Street, an old black- leather handbag, containing a long greenstone bar brooch ( gold- mounted at both ends), and a small plain gold band ring ( worn); value, £ 4. Identifiable. DUNEDIN. — 2ncl ultimo, from Timaru Railway- platform, t'ue property of PHILLIP MERCHANT, Ann Street, a dress- baiket, 2 ft. long, containing a white dress, a coloured- check dress, a dark dress, a cream dress, a dark costume, a white fur, a baby's cream dress, and a white shirt; value, £ 13. Identifiable. MILTON.— 28th ultimo, from the hut of JAMES KEN- NEDY, labourer, a pair of dark- tweed trousers, with two thin blue stripes running through them ; value, £ 1. Identi- fiable. Suspicion attached to Joseph Warrington, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, frtsh complexion, brown hair, clean- shaved ; dressed in dark- tweed trousers ( torn and sewn with twine across the seat), military leggings with spurs ; appeared strange in his manner. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Walker and — Armstrong ( name sup- posed fictitious). First: Age thirty- five, height 5ft. 5Jin., native of New Zealand, darkish moustache, dres- ed in dark suit and green coloured soft- felt hat. ( See Police Gazette, 1906, page 182.) Second: Age thirty- six, height about 5 ft. 5 in., dark- brown curly hair and moustache, slight build, part of right index finger missing, growth in left ear ; dressed in brown suit and faded brown Dr. Jim hat, trousers frayed at bottoms. INYERCARGILL.— Between Mav and November last, from a paddock, the property of WILLIAM JAMES McGREGOR, runholder, about three hundred and sixty ewes, mostly Merino- Border- Leicester cross, four, six, and eight tooth, branded " C " in red on rump, slope off front of right ear ; value, about £ 300. I., native of England, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark- brown hair, mole on abdomen, scar over nose. A reward of £ 1 will be paid for his apprehension. KEMPSEY ( NEW SOUTH WALES).— Inquiry requested for Henry Grills, who was convicted on the 5th April last for sodomy and sentenced to seveu yeais. The conviction was quashed, and he was icleased, but on appeal the High Court restured the conviction. RED- DEER stags and fallow deer bucks may be taken or killed within the Nelson Acclimatization District from the 25th day of February, 1911, to the 1st day of May, 1911, both days inclusive. 2. Licenses to take or kill such deer may be issued by the Chief Postmaster at Nelson, and the Postmaster at Motueka, on payment of a license fee of £ 1 Is., in the form prescribed in the Schedule hereto, and subject to the said Act and these regulations: Provided that not more than one such license shall be issued to the same person. 3. No licensee shall take or kill more than six deer in all, whether red- deer stags or fallow- deer bucks; and no red- deer stag shall be killed carrying antlers with less than four points, and no fallow- deer buck carrying antlers with less than four points. 4. No doe, hind, or fawn shall be taken or killed on any pretext whatever; and no licensee shall allow any dog to accompany either himself or any attendant he may have with him. 5. Nothing herein contained shall extend to authorizing any person to sell any deer or portion thereof. 6. Any person committing a breach of any of these regulations shall be liable on conviction to a fine not ex- ceeding £ 20. No. SCHEDULE.
