THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1911. VOL. XXVIII., No. 2824. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addresstd to THE EDITOR or THIS POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought teill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 10. 11 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear m number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged bv counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not latfr than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if acceptsdj will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within tht United Kingdom. A butcher's odd man; believed a native of Paddington. 4.—^ DiV si on.— For abduction and carnal knowledge— THOMAS AMBROSE WALKER, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small moustache brown, eyes blue, palm tree, & c., right forearm, tattooed left fore- arm, Jewish nose; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, bowler hat. A native of Camberwell, London. A French horn player, is a deserter from the Grena- dier Guards. Accompanied by a Girl, age 16, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, full facc, hair dark, eyes brown, and his Daughter, age 4, fair. Warrant issued. 5.- S Division. — For stealing £ 1 during November, 1910— ARTHUR JAMES COUZINS, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair and slight moustache very dark, eyes hazel, 2 small red marks under right eye; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat, boots or brown shoes, wearing a gun metal watch and silver chain. A photographic plate finisher; native of Boreham Wood, Herts. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division.— For being concerned with John Houghton, alias Mackay, H. C. R. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8.— Bedford ( Borough\— For obtaining f « ed by false pretences, between 15th September, 1910, and 3rd inst.— ROSETTA ROACH PERKINS, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 7 in., good build, complexion very fresh, hair dark brown; dress, black dress and hat, trimmed artificial grass, green coat. She obtained the food by representing she was entitled to a legacy in December last. Ab- sconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Windsor ( Borough). For stealing 16th inst., 3 pairs of boots ( 1 pair Crup Derbys, size 9, hand sewn, very wide welts, punched toe- caps, " T. C. P." stamped on waist and heel; 1 pair box calf Derbys, size 9, leather lined, hand made, punched toe- caps, black bottoms, " T. C. P." stamped on waist and heel, " R. Derby, 20, High Street, Windsor," in gilt letters inside; 1 pair box calf Derbys, not so stout as 2nd pair, leather lined, " R. Derby, 20. High Street, Windsor," in gilt- letters inside, " 3984— 10. D- 181— 3582 " in black on inside, ornamental welts, black bottoms " The Eclectic, Registered," on tabs)— W. II. DOWNTON, age 56 to 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in., thin features, hair iron grey, and beard clipped to a point, appeared to be very deaf; dress, fawn or greenish fawn colour overcoat, blue or dark suit, lightish cap, carried a pair of gold- coloured rimmed pince- nez. He took lodgings at a middle class cafe, called at a shop, examined some boots, and had three pairs sent to his lodging on ap- proval, promising to pay for those kept, but decamped with the boots before the return of the messenger. CORNWALL. 10. — Launceston ( County).— For obtaining a bullock by false pretences, 10th inst.— JOHN WILLIAM DALE ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., moustache dark, supposed cut mark upper lip, London accent; dress, dark check suit, dark overcoat and mackintosh, grey cap, heavy lace boots. On 5th inst. he took lodgings at Devonport, visited cattle markets, and used cheques on the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Plymouth Branch, and on being presented for payment were dishonoured. May open a small account at other banks in order to obtain a cheque book. Was accompanied by a woman, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in.; wearing black dress, black hat or round cap. Whitehaven ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 12th December, 1910, a mackintosh ( recovered)— FRED HARRISON, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, moustache dark; dress, old dark clothing, lace boots. A tramping clogger. Stated he was a native of Blackburn. One of the pockets of the mackintosh contained a rosary made of uncut pearl beads, cross of cut pearls and crucifixion, silver. SQUIRES, age 30 to 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, clasped hands left wrist; dress, light green tweed Norfolk jacket, heavy dark green over- coat with belt at back, brown knitted vest, blue serge trousers, supposed grey cap. He took lodgings at a farm and stated he was a chief gunner in the Royal Navy, stationed at Gosport. On 13th inst. he called upon a jeweller, made a purchase, for which he paid cash. On the fol- lowing day he again called, purchased 3 rings, value £ 8 6V 3d., tendered a cheque for £ 9, No. 27603, on Farrow's Bank, Ltd., No. 5, Stoke Road, Gosport, made payable to Hughes & Son, signed E. Squires. On 14th inst. he attempted to open an account at the London City & Midland Bank, Ltd., Wrexham, by presenting a cheque for £ 1,500, drawn on Farrow's Bank, signed E. Squires, and to obtain a sum of money. Had with him a rolled gold lever watch, No. 450858, hunting case, monogram " W. W. W." inside case. Left behind a black trunk containing 2 suits, a quantity of underlinen, collars, etc., and a pair of brown boots, all nearly new. Absconded 16th inst. ESSEX. 14.— Chelmsford ( County).— For failing to answer a summons at Petty Sessions, 16th Decem- ber, 1910, for being drunk on licensed premises— THOMAS NUTT, age 40, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey, life buoy with sail, malases, India, bust of girl, snake, Scotchman in highland dress, woman right arm, crest on wrist, " D. Ward, England," sailing ship, 1898, Scotchman, woman, 2 butter- flys, guardsman, woman with snake, and crest left arm; wearing light cord trousers. A brick- layer's labourer; native of Leicester. May be found at common lodging houses or low beer houses. Is said to have served 12 years in the Northampton Regiment. Previously convicted of begging. Warrant issued. m.— Chelmsford ( County).— Yor forging a certain bill of exchange for the payment of £ 10, with intent to defraud, on 10th inst.— FRANK GEO. SMITH, age about 17, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, eyes blue, of smart ap- pearance; dress, dark blue suit. A footman; supposed a native of Suffolk. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 16.— Southend ( County^.— For housebreak- ing— THOMAS WILLIAM MARGETTS, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes ( cast in right) grey, addicted to drink; dress, blue overcoat, velvet collar, dark grey jacket, light striped trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A house decorator; native of Acton, Middlesex. Has been to Canada several times. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Alton [ County).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Alton Union— WALTER BARTLETT, alias JESSE WILLIAM BART- LETT, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, hoil mark right side of neck, scar right shin and inside left elbow, burn mark back of left hand. A shep- herd, well known in Kent and Sussex, and has been several times convicted at Midhurst. Is accompanied by his son, age 17 or 18; a woman, age 35 to 40, and a boy, age 2 years. Warrant issued. Reuben, Alton. 18.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 1 10s. by a worthless cheque— EDWARD MOTH, age 39, height 5 ft. 11£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, eyes grey, addicted to drink, very talkative; dress, dark suit, fawn colour overcoat, green Alpine hat, brown boots and leggings. A fruit salesman; native of Ryde, Isle of Wight. May have in hi3 possession a cheque book on Malmesbury Park Branch, Wilts and Dorset Bank, Bournemouth. Probably accompanied by a woman. McDONALD, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) turning grey, clean shaved, eyes grey; dress, navy blue jacket, dark brown trousers, dark grey overcoat, black and grey cap, green tie, lace boots ( right one cut on outside). He took lodgings 24th ult., stated he was a pianoforte tuner and canvasser, also that he came from London. Absconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Preston. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 22. — Wellingborough ( County). — For obtaining £ 2 5s. by false pretences, 11th inst.— MARY SMITH, age about 50, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion dark, of gipsy appearance; wearing sealskin cape, edged with fawn colour fur, dark blue apron, black hat, necklace of large red beads. She calls upon shopkeepers, states she will be a good customer, then induces them to give a high price for a very common article ( chiefly hearth rugs). Her husband travels the Midland Counties with a dwelling van, " Eliza Smith, Bath Street, Birmingham," thereon, a four- wheeled cart and 5 or 6 donkeys. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Macleod, Wellingborough. NOR THUMBERLAND. Newcastle- on- Tyne ( City).— For obtaining poultry value £ 9 4s. 2d. by false pre- tences, 20th December, 1910— G. H. WEBSTER ( supposed an Irishman), age 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, large under lip, one shoulder dislocated; dress, dark brown tweed suit, black overcoat with velvet collar, soft felt hat. About 20th October, 1910, he rented two small shops, one as the Northumberland Produce Supply Company, the other as G. H. Webster, Hay, Straw and Produce Merchant, advertised extensively for poultry and farm pro- duce, during December received large consign- ments, which he disposed of, and absconded 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne. SHROPSHIRE. 24.— Wellington ( County).— For embezzle- ment— HARRY MOSS, age about 30, height 5 ft., good build, complexion very fresh, round features, hair and moustache light brown, may be clean shaved, eyes light blue; dress, blue or grey suit and cap, brown leather leggings. SCOTT, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache and eyes brown, bow legged; dress, dark overcoat and tweed suit. A native of Exeter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. House, Wincanton. 2( 5. — Bath ( City). — For stealing fiom his lodgings, 11th inst., a suit ( recovered); 1 black vest; 3 black mufflers— HARRY WAT- SON, alias FREDERICK JONES, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair light brown, clean shaved; dress, brown suit, cap, Army boots, wearing a gold colour watch chain and gold ring. He took lodgings, 5th inst., and stated he had come to get a situation. Is believed to have served in the Army. Had Army discharge papers in his possession bearing the name Watts, or Watson, also a soldier's kit/ bag and red tunic. Stated he left the Army a year ago and was in receipt of a pension; a native of Fulham, London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. 27.— Bridgwater ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 7th inst., a watch and chain ( recovered)— ARTHUR or F. LETHBRIDGE, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion and eyes dark, hair and moustache dark brown, carries his head slightly forward, walks quickly; dress, dark coat and vest, dark brown trousers, dark cap, thin lace boots, may be wearing a greenish grey overcoat. SUFFOLK ( East). 29. — Lowestoft ( County). — For stealing 15th inst., a " Humber" bicycle ( recovered)— ALBERT BERRY, age about 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, clean shaved, wart on left eye, large scar on stomach, scar on nose; dress, dark jacket and trousers, chocolate colour jersey, white tie, light cap. SURREY. 30 — Roigate ( Borough).— For stealing, 11th inst., a suit; 1 cap; 1 front; 1 tie; 1 shirt; 1 undervest, and a pair of boots, property of the Philanthropic Society, Redhill— JOHN SOIL LEUX, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, straight sharp nose, 2 slight scars thereon, scar on one wrist; dress, light grey suit, tweed cap. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant issued. Sl.— ReigatO [ Borough).— For stealing, 14th inst., a coat; 1 vest; 1 pair trousers; 1 cap; 1 front; 1 tie; 1 shirt; 1 undershirt; 1 pair of boots, property of the Philanthropic Society, Redhill— WILLIAM FAIRFIELD, age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair and eyes brown, straight nose, flower left forearm, ears project, small mouth; dress, dark brown suit, tweed cap. WARWICKSHIRE. 32.— Solihull ( County).— For embezzling £ 45 — THOMAS ELGIE, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes dark blue, wart on left eyelid, blue mark across bridge of nose; dress, fawn colour mackintosh, dark grey jacket with green stripes, dark green woollen fancy vest, brown knickers, dark grey stockings, red band on top, fawn colour soft felt hat, lace boots. A professional golfer; native of Durham. May seek employment at golf links. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carbis, Solihull. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). S3.— Malton ( Couvty).— For stealing a dark grey overcoat, single- breasted, black lining, black bone buttons, and £ 2, 9th inst.— TOM HOLMES, age about 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, thin face, small hands, hair and slight moustache brown, thick upper lip, lame, slovenly gait; dress, greenish suit, dark cap, brown bow tie, lace boots and the stolen overcoat, which is rather large tor him. Has with him a photograph of a girl dressed in white; sometimes stays at common lodging houses. Supposed a painter or sign writer and native of Liverpool. Stated he was going to Middlesbrough or Stockton. * Warrant issued. M.— Malton ( County). - For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 11th inst.— JOHN GARWOOD, alias BUTTLE, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7£ in., complexion fresh, hair ( short) grey, clean shaved, eyes hazel, small scar left side of head, mole left shoulder, horse shoe, crossed whips and jockey cap right forearm, of smart appearance; dress, dark suit, dark overcoat with velvet collar. Stated he was veterinary surgeon of Driffield. May have small cards with " Sleightholme, Poultry Dealer," thereon. A painter; said to be a native of York. Has beem engaged company promoting. Recently occupied offices in London, acquired land on lease in different parts of the country for the purpose of erecting cinematograph theatres, which have never been completed owing to lack of capital.
