THE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2802. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. " 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted m one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to < liable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clcarly stated. 6. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of ( is. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not liss rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be, guaranteed by an officcr of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 10. 11. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning They must be clcarly written on one. side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space, being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are onl\) accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forccs should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 2.— A Division .— For forging and uttering 4 cheques and obtaining £ 500, 27th ult,— EMILE DUBOIS, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes deep set, stoops, rather round shouldered, protruding ears, speaks French fluently, also a little Dutch and English; dress, dark grey check suit, black bowler hat, pink tie; smart appearance. Supposed a native of Belgium. 3.— D Division.— For embezzling £ 20 14s., 19th ult.— CHARLES VINCE, age 24, heignt 5 ft., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue, consumptive appearance; dress, dark tweed suit, dark cap and tie, lace boots. CA RDIGA NSHIRE. 8.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For house- breaking and stealing 6 dessert knives and forks, gold plated; 1 new pair brown shooting boots, CHESHIRE. 9.— Altrincham ( County).— For obtaining 8s. 6d., by false pretences, at Hale, 16th ult.— JAMES DA VIES, alias MONTAGUE, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, of consumptive appearance, one front upper tooth missing, slightly bow legged, swings one knee slightly outwards; dress, dark grey suit, dark overcoat, imitation leather buttons, 3 on each sleeve, dark green soft hat, brown boots. He advertises in the Exchange and Mart that a lady is disposing of her wardrobe. Of theatrical appearance. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Okell, Altrincham. 10. Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, at Northenden, 22nd ult., a set of upper artificial teeth; 1 pair blue serge trousers; 1 wooden pipe; 1 fountain pen, and a dressing comb— THOMAS LIDDON, age about 23, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair auburn, slight moustache sandy, squints, walks erect; dress, grey jacket and vest, light muffler, brown cap, and the stolen trousers. A farm labourer or market porter : native of County Sligo. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 11 .— Macclesfield ( Borough). - For obtain- ing food, lodgings, and a bicycle, black enamelled, 28- in. wheels, plated rims, one front spoke missing, new pedals, roller chain, 2 steel plates on each side in centre of back wheel, Dunlop front tyre, new " Mackintosh" back tyre, by false pretences also for stealing a Samuel's Silver Acme Lever watch No. 0935, " J. Whittaker " and " H. Galli- more" on back of inner case, black silk guard with 4 steel aces and threepenny piece as pendants; a white silk muffler with small squares— A MAN. age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( long) dark brown, rather large nose, impediment in speech, peculiarity about mouth; dress, blue serge jacket, grey speckled vest, greenish speckled trousers, white cotton muffler, black and white speckled or greenish cap. He stated his child, which was insured, had died, and owing to the payments being in arrears, the claim would not be met. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. DURHAM. Vd— stockton- on- Tees ( County).— For stealing, 27th September last, a lady's gold albert, small thimble, pocket knife and scissors attached; 1 black enamel brooch, half- moon shape, pearl in centre; 1 do., photograph of ss. A/ erion in colours thereon; 1 rolled gold necklace with pen- dant; 1 lady's silver watch, chased back, gold ligures and pointers; 1 gold expanding bracelet; 2 lady's dress rings ( 10 pearls in centre of one, 2 clear brilliants and blue stone in centre of other); 1 small polished wood box, views of Saltburn there- on; 1 lady's companion, containing 1 pair large scissors, 1 pair small do., gilt on handles of latter pair; 1 pair lady's boots, size 4; a quantity of lady's underclothing, and £ 3 5s. 2d.— MARY WASS, age IS to 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark ; dress, navy blue serge three- quarter length coat, navy blue skirt, large blue straw hat, lace boots. A domestic servant. Warrant issued. 14.— Stock ton- on - Tees ( County).— For larceny ( bailee), 22nd Sept.— WILLIAM HOR- ACE POWELL, alias WILKINS and SINTON, age 34, height 5 ft. llf in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey; dress, dark jacket suit, grey cap, brown boots, usually carries a stick. Had with him a light grey tweed jacket; 1 pair lace boots; and a straw hat. A native of Stockton- on- Tees. An expert typist and shorthand writer. Previously convicted at Huddersfield, York, and South Shields. Is accompanied by a Woman ( not wanted), age about 23, height about 5 ft., heavy dark eyebrows, eyes bluisli- grey; dress, dark grey striped costume, jacket tight fitting, heliotrope blouse, large black hat trimmed black feather. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hildreth, Stockton- on- Tees. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 15.— Bristol ( City).— For absconding from his bail, 14th ult., while awaiting trial at Bristol Assizes, commencing 21st inst., charged with con- verting money to his own use and obtaining money by false pretences— CHARLES EDWARD SMITH, age 60 ( looks much younger), height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, turning grey, of smart appearance; well dressed, usually wears a drab colour overcoat, three- quarter length, black bowler hat. A betting man, attends race meetings. Stated lie had served in the Police, also in the Army. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 16— Bristol < CitiA.— For embezzling 5s. 6d. — REGINALD WILLIAM LEEK, age 17 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) sandy, believed slight cast in each eye; dress, dark coat and vest with small white stripe, dark brown mixture trousers, cap. Absconded ' 26th ult.; was employed by a pork butcher. Expressed a desire to join the Army; fond of the company of soldiers. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 17. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — For fowl- stealing, 25th ult. RICHARD HENRY TAY- LOR, age about 23, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, liair brown, eyes blue; dress, light suit, white sweater, cap, boots, " No. 945 " believed stamped inside— HENRY DAVIS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, clean shaved, eyes hazel; dress, old brown jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, hob- nailed boots ( toe- cap of left miss- ing), of slovenly appearance. Both have served in the Navy. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. KENT. 18.— Faversham ( County).— For obtaining £ 6 8s., by a worthless cheque, No. L 13/ B, 249539, on the London City & Midland Bank, 71a, Queen Victoria Street, E. C., payable to H. Neame, drawn by T. Eley & Son for £ 8— H. NEAME, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, brown suit, black bowler hat. Appearance of a farm bailiff. Is identical with Man, Case No. 31, 28th ult. Warrant issued. W.— Faversham { County ,.- For obtaining 5s., by false pretences, 21st' ult.— ARTHUR MARSHALL, age about 60, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion ruddy, hair, beard and moustache grey; dress, dark suit, blue black overcoat, velvet collar, blue front and collar, black bowler hat. Stated he was a gardener and had been employed at Epsom. May call upon clergymen. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gaunt, Faversbam. 20. — Ramsgate ( Borough) — For stealing between 18th and 21st ult., a suit of clothes ( re- covered)— KATE HARFORD, age 17, height 5 ft. 2A in., hair auburn, eyes grey. She was charged with this offence, 24th ult., and remanded oil bail until 31st ult., but did not surrender, and it has been ascertained she went to London on 24th ult. May be found in furnished rooms in a low neighbourhood, or at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 21. — Liverpool ( City).— For stealing, 20th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— CHARLES ED- WARDS, age 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., hair dark, clean shaved, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark jacket suit, grey tweed cap. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 22. — Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 20, by false pretences, 18th ult.— LOR1MER HUMPHREYS, alias J. LOR1MER HUM- PHREYS, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., slight build, complexion pale, thin features, rather long face, forehead somewhat broad, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes hazel, large nose, long white hands, of good address; dress, navy blue, black or mixture tweed suit. He rented an office the latter end of September, furnished same and traded as Valer & Co., Ltd., Patent Flask and Glass Manufacturers; on 12tli October advertised in the Manchester evening paper " Manufacturing firm require young man to represent them and collect accounts, salary and expenses, security re- quired.— T. 179, Office of paper," obtained money as securities from applicants, stated they could start on 24th ult., but absconded 22nd ult. He also obtained a suit of clothes and an overcoat, tendered in payment a bogus cheque drawn on the Edinburgh ( Leven Street) Branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland. May be accompanied by a man ( not wanted), age 30, height 6 ft., good build, complexion fresh, round face, hair sandy, very slight moustache sandy, or clean shaved, Scotch accent; dress, brown tweed jacket suit. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 23. — Lancaster f/ WmaM.- JOllN MASHINDER, Office No. 3128- 98, Tabular Form, 21st ult. Not now wanted, having reported at Blackburn. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Grimsby ( Borough).— For obtaining a typewriter by false pretences, 30th August last— E. M. SHAW, age 36 to 38, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes very dark, rather large nose; dress, grey Norfolk jacket, vest and knickers, grey stockings, light cap. The receipts and billheads used by him were headed " E. M. Shaw & Co., Specialists in Typewriters, 235, High Holborn, London, W. C.; also at Liverpool and Manchester. Local Depot— 19, Storey " Street, Hull." He had several second- hand typewriters with him, and called on a fish merchant on the 27th August last, and sold him a Remington typewriter for £ 17. On the 29th August Shaw again called at the office and produced a letter which he alleged was a copy of one he had received from Messrs. Vickers, Son & Maxim, of Barrow- in- Furness, stating that the firm would be prepared to see him on the 31st, if he brought that particu- lar model of typewriter with him. Stated he would like to do this, as it might mean his having their trade, and he was allowed to do so on promis- ing to send another machine. He also obtained a new typewriter from another fish merchant, which he had recently supplied him, on the pre- tence that it wanted some little adjustment which would have to be done at his office. SOMERSETSHIRE. 25 Wincanton ( County).- For warehouse- breaking and stealing a quantity of beef and 17 rabbits ( recovered)— WILLIAM BALCH, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ginger, eyes blue; dress, dark clothes, cap. HENRY BALCH, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue; dress, dark coat, cord trousers, cap. BENJAMIN JAMES, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown, scar right side of forehead; dress, dark clothes. Labourers; natives of Bruton. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. House, Wincanton. STAFFORDSHIRE. 20.— Wedhesbury ( County). — For shop- breaking, 25th Sept. ( with Thomas Roach, sen- tenced to 12 months imprisonment, 18th ult.), and stealing property described in Case No. 45, 7th inst.— JOHN CONNOR, age 24, height 5 ft. 4A in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, Japanese girl right upper arm, tree, pot and flower right forearm; dress, brown suit and sap, supposed new boots. A native of Wednesbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. - Newcastle- under- Lyme ( Borough).— For stealing £ 60 2s., between 3rd and 10th ult.— FREDERICK FALLON, age about 34, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion florid, hair ( inclined to sandy, bushy in front) light, slight moustache sandy, waxed at ends, eyes blue, abscess mark under right ear; dress, navy blue suit, straw hat, brown boots, wearing two gold rings. Had with him a square brown leather travelling bag and a brown Gladstone bag, 2 suits of clothes ( 1 grey, 1 black). Was employed as manager by Lipton, Limited. Absconded 10th ult. Warrant issued. 2H Newcastle- under- Lyme ( Borough).— For stealing, 4th ult., a street organ, without mandoline attachment, " S. Robino" carved on inside near keys, " T. V." stamped on handle brass, black oil cloth covering— JAMES CHARLES KNIGHT, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair ( curl on forehead) and slight moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, light jacket and vest, dark trousers, cap and muffler. A native of Stanton, Derby. FLORENCE KNIGHT ( wife of above), age about 21, height 5 ft. 5 in.; dress, light jacket, dark skirt, cap, white apron. Have been travelling with street organs. Warrant issued. 29— Newcastle- under - Lyme ( Borough).— For stealing, 17tli ult., a bicycle ( recovered) and £ 7 7s. Hd.— TITOMAS ALFRED WILLIAMS, age 20, he'ight 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut mark back of 2nd and 3rd right fingers; dress, black coat, brown trousers, cap. A potter; native of Penkhall, Stoke- on- Trent. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newcastie- under- Lyme. SUFFOLK ( East). 30. — Lowestoft ( County). — For stealing ( servant) £ 1 6s., 14th ult.— HENRY SMITH, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( curly, bald on top) dark, near sighted, wears pince nez when reading, London accent; dress, black coat, dark trousers, black tie, cap. Believed a native of London. He was em- ployed to hawk fruit. Absconded 14th ult. Has been employed as a ship's steward, and often acts as a deputy at a lodging house. Warrant issued. SUSSEX ( East). 31. — Hastings ( Borough). — For house- breaking, 30th ult., and stealing a silver English lever watch, key wind, open face, black hands and figures, case worn smooth, " G" scratched on back, No. supposed 59381, old- fashioned; 1 small oval locket, glass at back, containing hair : 1 gold watch key, ball shape, ring at top; 3 gold rings, each with hair around centre, one with " A. C." inside, one with " W. C." inside; 1 r8- ct. gold keeper, plain; 1 small round gold fancy pencil case— TWO MEN, 1st, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved dress, dark suit, brown overcoat or mackintosh, black bowler; 2nd, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and beard grey; dress, grey suit, grey soft felt hat, carried a light mackintosh; the first described was carrying a note book. A cook; native of Canning Town. In addition to several pre- vious convictions in London, others are recorded at Penarth, Hull, Glamorgan, Southampton, South Shields and Liverpool.— ROWLAND HOY, alias HALL, ARCHER and ADAMS, Office No. S/ 79379, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, small lump right shoulder blade, cross and pierced heart left fore- arm ; dress, dark suit and cap.
