THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2792. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communica- tions relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of Persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted cut a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge ivill be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is requirevl to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tue » day edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. WINDEBANK, age 30, height 5 ft, 6 in., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved, thick lips, teeth discoloured; dress, dark morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, blue tie, black bowler hat, brass watch chain. A clerk; native of London. Warrant issued. 2.— V Division. - For forgery and larceny ( lodger)— PERCIVAL RANDOLPH BECKING- TON, alias PERCY BECKINGTON and PER- CIVAL REX M. NAPIER, Office No. 55- 05, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar under left eye, abscess scar left side chin, plausible manner. A steward; native of Teddington. When last seen was dressed in a grey jacket suit, straw hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For embezzling £ 10 8s. 5d.- FRANK W. PIOWIS, age 43 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., good build, complexion sallow, full face, hair ( thin on top) dark brown, straggly moustache ( prominent parting), eyes ( prominent) brown, bushy eyebrows, bad teeth, speaks and walks quickly, of nervous disposition; dress, grey jacket suit, dark overcoat, black hard felt hat, wearing gold watch and curb pattern chain with seal attached. A traveller; late of Guildford Road, South Lambeth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 4. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 19th inst.— W. WIL- SON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and rather heavy moustache light; dress, navy blue suit, green tie, white straw hat ( damaged round rim), with black band, lace boots. He called upon a shopkeeper and represented he was an agent for a firm of accountants, Chancery Lane, London, and was given money for the pur- pose of taking out judgment summonses, which he failed to do. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 5.— 1Windsor ( Borough).— For attempting to obtain £ 20 by a fictitious cheque, 21st inst., and with obtaining goods by false pretences— THOMAS WATT, alias CRAIG, WAUGH, JENNINGS, WATSON, WATT, JOHN SEYMOUR, HEP- PELL, WATTS, KENNEDY, etc., Office No. 203- 04, Cases No. 3, 15th July, 12, 6th May, and 35, 22nd April, 1910 ( ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, No. 81, Figure 34), age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, bad on feet, and leans forward very much when walking; dress, light grey suit, light fancy vest, appearance of an ex- jockey or jockey's valet. He engaged rooms, stating he was valet to Mr. L. Rothschild, and ordered dinner for himself and four friends, who he said were coming later, then presented a cheque for £ 20 on Lloyd's Bank, Leamington, signed " Leonard De Rothschild," and endorsed " H. Watts." The person to whom the cheque was presented being suspicious, delayed cashing it, and in the meantime Watts decamped, and is probably now following race meetings. Warrant issued. G — Great Marlow ( County).— For steal- ing from his lodgings, between 13th and 14th inst., a gold horseshoe pin; 1 pocket knife, ivory handle, and Is. 6d.— FRED NEALE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark mixture jacket, dark grey trousers, navy blue cap, lace boots. A tramping upholsterer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, High Wycombe. CA MBRIDGES HIRE. 7.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st inst., a roadster bicycle, " Invicta " transfer on down tube and head, green enamelled, lined gold, " Simplex " 3- speed gear, " Reflex " Clipper tyres, rat trap pedals, roller lever brakes, raised handle bars, tip off left grip . SANDERSON, alias F. BOXALL, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and stubby moustache dark, full face, may now be clean shaved; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light green stripes or I plaid trousers, white rubber collar, green tie, lace boots. From 16th to 21st inst. he stayed at a common lodging house. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. S.— Crewe ( County).— For night poaching at Haslington— EDWARD SMART, age 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, supposed to have recent scar on head; dress, usually dark clothes, muffler, cap. Native of Crewe. Warrant issued. 9.— Crewe ( County).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences— JAMES WILLIAM ' ARM- STRONG ( supposed false), age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair reddish brown, inclined to curly, eyes blue; dress, biue serge suit, brown or greenish colour cap, iight green tie. He represented himself to be an agent for the Prudential Assurance Co., and obtained the money by stating a £ 10 bonus would be given. Supposed identical with MAN, Case No. 4, 5th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 10.— LiSCard ( County).— For loitering with intent to commit a felony— A MAN, age 23 to 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, slight moustache light brown; dress, dark suit, brown cap. Was accompanied by THOMAS CLARKE, alias WELCH, Office No. 1781- 09 ( now in custody). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McHale, Liscard. 11— Nantwich ( County). — For stealing a Humber " bicycle, 28- in. frame, straight handle bars, rat trap pedals, Dunlop tyres, free wheel, rim brakes— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair light, clean shaved: dress, dark suit, blue jersey. A sailor, carried a brown bundle. Information to Supt. Farnworth, Nantwich. 12.— Birkenhead ( Borough).— For stealing, 22nd inst., a " Triumph" motor cycle, one cylin- der, 3i- h. p., number on engine, " 4582 " on top of crank case, No. on frame " 138,641," registration No. K 2487, magneto switch on handle bar, patent leather magneto cover ( slightly bent underneath), patent clip on back mudguard for stand, Clincher retreaded tyre on back, repair band on front tyre, chain cover on back sprocket wheel, has been black enamelled, but is now aluminium colour, lamp out of order, had a small flat electric flash lamp attached to front fork. The cycle was ad- vertised in a motor paper, and the below described man came to see it, When trying the machine he rode away with it.— JOSEPH HILL, alias FER- GUSON, RANDLE, HODKINSON, MOORE, etc., Office No. 1604- 02, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., stoutish build, complexion fresh and clean shaved, hair sandy, slightly bald on top, eyes blue, scar over left eye, anchor back left hand; dress, grey overcoat and cap, light grey suit, carried a mackintosh. CORNWALL. 13. — Truro { County). — For bigamy, 26th December, 1908— WILLIAM SIMPSON, age 47 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache grey, bad teeth; dress, slate colour suit, black overcoat, black soft felt hat. A painter. Left INewquay in December, 1909. A local preacher; also advertised himself as a moneylender. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sparks, Truro. DEVONSHIRE. 14._ Exeter { County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences, 13rd inst.— A. COLLINS, a gipsy, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, plausible manner; dress, brown tweed suit and cap. A horse dealer. Travels with two 4- wheeled vans, " A. Collins, Forest Gate, Essex," on one, " Marshall, Oxford," on other; a 2- wheeled box trap, " James Marshall " thereon; 4 horses ( 3 bay, 1 grey), a chestnut colt, dog and 1 or 2 bicycles. Hawks rugs, etc. Accompanied by his wife, tall, stout build, two sons, two women, age 16 to 24, two girls, 9 and 7, a boy, age 5, and a baby. All well dressed. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. U.— Beaminster ( County).— For stealing a milk can and milk, at Lyme Regis, 9th inst.— JOSEPH EDWARD WOOD, age 16, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald patch back of head) light brown, eyes blue; dress, black vest, brown cord breeches, heavy boots. Was employed delivering milk. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Beaminster. ESSEX. 16.— Grays ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle, between 1st June and 20th inst.— CLIF- FORD' BULLOCK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, narrow chin, high pointed, talks quickly, nervous temperament, addicted to drink; wearing light brown Norfolk jacket, usually no hat. An actor. Is accompanied by his wife, age 35 to 40, good build, hair brown. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Grays. 17.— Southend ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings, between 19th and 24th inst., a gold ring ( recovered); 1 metal watch and brown leather wristlet— BESSIE SOLE, alias CARNEY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, black skirt, long red coat, red straw hat, trimmed red ribbon, brown lace boots, wearing long drop earrings. A native of Tooting, London. Absconded 24th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 18.— Treharris ( County).— For obtaining boots to the value of £ 20 4s. 5d., by false pre- tences— HARRY GREEN, a Jew, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly around ears), slight moustache and eyes dark; dress, brown suit, light cap, light lace boots. A painter. Had with him a bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gill, Treharris. 5 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, black coat and skirt, white silk blouse, black hat trimmed white material, brown shoes. A domestic servant; native of Gelli. Warrant issued. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Romsey ( County).— For burglary and stealing articles described in Case No. 18, 16th inst.— ARTHUR HASLAM, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., well built, complexion fresh, hair and heavy eyebrows dark, clean shaved, defective upper front teeth, erect bearing, well educated, speaks French, can write shorthand; dress, probably stolen clothing. Is fond of speaking at Missions, etc.; has been employed as a baker, book- canvasser and indoor servant; native of near Chesterfield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Littlewood, Romsey. HER TFORDSHIRE. 22.— Watford ( County).— For obtaining by a worthless cheque on the London City & Midland Bank, Deptford Branch, S. E., 15th inst., at Abbots Langley, a bay gelding ( recovered at Rotherhithe) — A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 ' or 4 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, clean shaved; dress, dark overcoat, light trousers, black felt hat. ( Case No. 27, 23rd inst. cancelled). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. TUESDAY, N O V E M B E R 30, 1910. SHROPSHIRE. 28.- Whitchurch ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 5th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— GEORGE EDWARD BLUNDELL, age about 28, " height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown, very talkative, of smart appearance; dress, dark jacket and vest, breeches and leggings. Has been employed by the Gresham Publishing Company, Birmingham, as a canvasser. See Case No. 36, 16th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lucas, Whitchurch. KENT. 23.— West Mailing ( County).— For obtain- ing goods and money by worthless cheques, payable on Farrow's Bank, Woolwich Branch, at Snod- land, 23rd inst.— HENRY W. MARTIN ( sup- posed false), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very dark ( tanned), hair ( curly, cut rather short) dark, broad upper jaw; dress, blue suit with brass buttons, P. & O. cap with gold badge with red centre and " G " in gold thereon. Had in his possession a cheque book containing 30 cheques, Nos. 21831 to 21860. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ford, West Mailing. 24. — Canterbury ( City). — For stealing, about 19th April last, a brass cornet, maker " But- ler," stamped thereon, single water key, A & B shank, in a black case, red lining, brass handle on top— WILLIAM PAINE, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark; dress, green striped jacket suit, light tweed cap, button boots. A musician. Ac- companied by a Woman, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, and a girl, age 2 years. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Canterbury. 25.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For larceny, 13th inst.— THOMAS WOOLVIN, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes brown, anchor and flag left forearm; dress, dark lounge suit light grey overcoat, dark cap. A native of Maidstone. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 19. — Bristol ( City). — For assaulting her daughter, age 13, by forcibly removing her from the Clergy Daughters' School, Clifton, 21st inst.— EDITH WEST, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, hair light, of good address; dress, long cream knitted woollen coat, cream colour skirt, brown toque. Was accompanied by TWO MEN, 1st ( supposed her husband), age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, white sailor hat; 2nd, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., wearing a bowler hat, carried a mackintosh. West and her husband are believed to be on a holiday from Norway, and no doubt intend taking the girl back with them. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Liverpool ( City). — For embezzlement— DAVID DAGLEISH, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, long forehead, hair dark, heavy moustache; dress, blue serge suit, hard hat. May endeavour to leave the country, probably for South Africa. Had in his possession a cycle, 24- in. frame, enamelled black, red lines, raised handle bars, Dunlop 28- in. by l|- in. tyres, roller lever brakes, metal mudguards, carrier fixed on back, Brooks saddle, transfer on front, " Timpson Bros., Birmingham and Liverpool." OXFORDSHIRE. 27.— Henley- on- Thames ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 23rd inst., a bicycle, black enamelled, 26- in. frame, 28- in. wheels, 28 x in. " Roman" front tyre 28 x 1J in. back tyre, flat handle bars, rather old— GEORGE ELLERY, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, scar left side of nose and lip; dress, grey jacket and trousers, fancy vest, all old, light cap. W.— Wednesbury ( County).— For being concerned with A MAN ( in custody) in shop- breaking, 25th or 26th inst., and stealing 3 pairs lady's button boots ( 2, size 5, 1, size 6); 1 pair do. lace, size 5; 1 pair do. slippers, size 4; 1 pair girl's lace boots, size 11; 2 pairs do. button shoes, size 11; 1 pair lady's do., size 4; 1 pair boy's lace boots; 4 pairs girl's do., size 11; 2 pairs child's brown button boots, sizes 5 and 6; 1 pair boy's lace boots, size 9; 14 pairs men's lace boots, sizes 7 to 10; all bear " Wheat Sheaf Brand," " Labour and Wait" on soles; 36 window leathers; 1 pair stock- ings; 19 men's shirts— A MAN, age 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, Japanese girl right arm, tree, pot and flower right forearm; dress, brown suit and cap, supposed a pair of the stolen boots. A native of Wednes- bury. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. 80. — Wolverhampton ( Borough). — For stealing a lady's fur coat, 31st ult., and obtaining goods by fraud— MADAM LEWIS, alias FLOR- RIE LEWIS, MADAM AMBROS and LEE, age 60, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, Roman nose, hair grey, artificial teeth, of good address and smart appearance, springy gait. Be- lieved a native of London. Is fond of conversing with music hall managers and variety artistes. She takes a small villa in residential districts, furnishes same on the hire system, engages a first hand and several improvers, advertises as a Parisian dressmaker, obtains dress material, silks, etc., on credit, which she sells to customers for less than cost price, who in most cases instruct her to make dresses from same, but after receiving payment, invariably disposes of or pledges the material. Absconded 16th inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Wolver- hampton. SUSSEX ( East). 31. — Hastings ( Borough). — For removing money and property to the value of £ 5,000, con- trary to sub- sec. 5, section 11, of the Debtors Act, 1869— WILLIAM BELL, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache light, may be clean shaved, eyes ( short sighted) grey, slight defect in one, wears pince- nez or strong glasses, very active, places his hands on his hips when talking, an inveterate cigar smoker, draper; supposed a native of London. Ab sconded about 10th June last. May have left or endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings. WILTSHIRE. 82.— Chippenham ( County).— For obtain- ing by a worthless cheque on the London & Pro- vincial Bank, Ltd., Maida Vale Branch, London, at Kingsdown Fair, 14th inst., a brown cob gelding, 4 years, about 14 hands, long tail, soft lump on near knee, broken to saddle only, and £ 1 — CHARLES REYNOLDS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion pale, clean shaved; dress, grey suit, green felt hat, black tie, carried a light mackintosh; and A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 10 in., red cheeks, moustache brown, appeared to be suffering from a skin disease; wearing long light mackintosh, green cap. Represented himself as groom to Reynolds. They took stabling at Bath in August last, and posed as horse dealers. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Moore, Chippenham. 88.— Salisbury ( City).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Salisbury Union since 9th ult.— FREDERICK COLLINS, age 29, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion and eyes dark, hair black, very thick eyebrows, clean shaved, front teeth decayed, left leg about 3 in. shorter than right; dress, navy blue serge suit and cap, violet colour tie, lace boots. Frequently spoke of going to Canada. A carman; native of Salisbury. May be accompanied by a Woman, age 32 or 33, height about 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light. Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 34.— Doncaster ( County).— For attempted murder, at Woodlands Village, 9th April, 1910— JOHN COURTNEY, alias JOHN McGUIRE and bridge, slightest suspicion of limp left leg. A native of Louth. Has been employed as a brick- layer's labourer. May be working on new build- JOHN McDONALD, late of Adwick- le- Street, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, may be clean shaved or wearing mous- tache and whiskers, which j. vill be of a dark ginger colour, eyes blue, large nose, scar on ings in course of erection or public works, & c.; has also worked as a pit sinker. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief ' Constable, County Police Office, Wakefield.
