POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2736. 1. All communication* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 1. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. t. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent ; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. 9. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLIOB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Is said to be of independent means. May be accompanied by her husband and a little girl, age 10. May endeavour to leave the country, or be found at fashionable seaside resorts staying at good class hotels or boarding houses. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to Major H. B. A case has recently arisen where a Man, who had been circulated in the " Police Gazette" to be dealt with where found, was charged in a certain Police District under the Prevention of Crimes' Act with failure to report in another Police District, and the Learned Magistrate discharged the man. In future, in order to avoid similar mistakes, such peculations in the " Police Gazette" from Provincial Forces, will appear weekly under one heading in Tabular Form. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A native of Hammersmith, London. Is fond of sketching. He sent a letter, 13th inst, bear- ing the Sheffield post mark. Warrant issued. 9.— x Division,— For obtaining by worth- less cheques on Farrow's Bank, 50 High Street, Peckham, 3rd inst., a dark brown cob, 14£ hands, very prominent teeth, 2 white spots between knees and fetlocks, short tail, scars left side of neck near collar mark; a ralli car, dark green picked out black, concave panels, initials " F. R. " thereon, rubber tyres, " Durstan, maker, Marylebone Road " on brass wheel caps, brass lamps and mounts, 2 rubber mats, 2 waterproof knee apons, initials " F. D. B. A BERDEENS HIRE, 10.— Aberdeen ( County).— For obtaining a cow by fraud at Laverockcraig, Old Deer, 22nd ult. — FREDERICK DYSON CLUBB, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion ruddy, full round face, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache brown, eyes grey, plausible and courteous manner; dress, new dark tweed suit and overcoat. A butcher, native of Peterhead. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Aberdeen. BEDFORDSHIRE, 11— Bedford ( Borough).— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences CAYE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, hair brown, rather heavy moustache ginger, twisted ends, holds his head downwards v/ hen walking, very plausible manner. He called at a public house, represented that he was a traveller for a firm of boot manufacturers, Rushden, asked if a wire could be directed to him at the public house from his firm, consent to this was given, he then left, stated he would return shortly ; in the meantime a telegram was delivered ; on his return he opened the wire, then stated his firm wanted him to go on to Norwich, and asked for the loan of 10s. Warrant issued. 12 — Bedford ( Borough).— For forging and uttering a bill, thereby obtaining on 26th ult., 5 £ 50 Bank of England notes, Nos. N over 5 47981- 38562, dated 17.9.08; N over 4, 47558, 77545 and 77546, dated 17.8.08; 3 £ 10 do., Nos. K over 20- 93433, dated 14.7.08; K over 23- 19727, dated 15.8.08; K over 13- 89455, dated 15.2.08, and £ 13— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache dark, wearing dark overcoat, hard bowler hat. On 26 ult., the manager of a Bank here received a letter together with a cheque for £ 236 on the London and South Western Bank, New Cross Branch, purporting to come from a customer ask- ing that the cheque be placed to his credit, also giving notice that an accepted bill for £ 293 became due for ' presentation that day, and requested the manager to pay same and debit his account. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford, BRECONSHIRE, U — Brecon ( County).— For larceny, LEWIS LEWIS, alias CRINK, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, oval face, hair dark brown, eyes brown, lost right thumb, scald scar both shoulders, cut scar right knee, dot between left thumb and forefinger. A tinker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Flye, Brecon. CHESHIRE, 14. — Stockport ( Bmough). — For stealing £ 13 10s. from a sub post office, 26 ult.— THREE MEN, 1st, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build; dress, light suit; 2nd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., wearing a dark overcoat; 3rd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., thin features. One of the above described asked the postmaster if he could give him half a sovereign for silver, which was done ; shortly after a second man called and said that some boys had covered the window with mud. The postmaster went outside, and on turning to go back to the shop, he met another man coming out who stated he required a stamp. The postmaster then followed the boys a short distance, and on returning to the office found that the above amount had been taken from the drawer. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. DORSETSHIRE. 15 .— Beaminster ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 7th ult., a light mackintosh with green velvet collar and £ 17, including 3 £ 5 notes— FRED JOHNSON, age about 32, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes brown; wear- ing grey coat, dark vest ( double breasted), grey vest, red plaid scarf, dark cap, brown leggings, probably the stolen mackintosh. A North countryman. Has served in the army. Attends fairs, and has worked for a horse dealer. ( See Case No. 14, 11th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Beaminster. ESSEX. 16.— Grays ( County).— For stealing a watch and chain ( recovered)— ELLEN SUTTON, alias MUR- RAY, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair very light, tattooed back of one hand; wearing brown velvet coat, brown fur, and large black hat. Frequents common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 17 — Saffron Walden ( County). — For obtaining a pair of box calf Derby boots, size 7, and £ 1, by a worthless cheque, No. L. 8/ D- 85130, dated 14th February, 1910, for £ 1 18s. 6d., by J. Millington, on the London City and Midland Bank, 20, Eastcheap, E. C., endorsed J. Birch— J. BIRCH, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( waxed at ends) dark, eyes grey, turns his right foot inwards; dress, light green mackintosh overcoat, navy blue trousers, green tweed hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hailstone, Saffron Walden. 18 — Colchester ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences— SAMUEL ECCLESTON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and thick moustache light brown, eyes grey, mole on neck. A clerk, native of North Wales. Has served in the Army, he was convicted of felony at Birmingham in 1908, when his pension was fortfeited. He visits garrison towns ostensibly to call upon old military friends, becomes acquainted with local tradesmen, from whom he obtains money by worthless cheques, and decamps. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Colchester. FORFARSHIRE. 19. — Dundee ( City). — For stealing blankets and obtaining £ 58 13s. lOd. by fraud, between 15th August, 1909, and 10th ult.— ROSE JAMESON alias PURVIS, age about 56, short, stout build, hair and face white, of good address and very plausible; dress, navy blue or green dress with coat to match, black hat with large black feather, yellow gloves, black muff. Stated she was a native of Brighton, that she was a dressmaker, obtained goods and money on the pretence that she had valuable jewels deposited in the bank, and that she was going to Edinburgh to sell them. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 20.— Bristol ( City)-— For converting to his own use £ 10 entrusted to him— CHARLES EDWARD SMITH, age 60 ( looks much younger), height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), of smart appearance; usually wears a three- quarter length drab colour covert coat, black bowler hat, may be wearing a blue melton over- coat. A betting man, well known to bookmakers, attends race meetings. Is believed to have served in the Metropolitan Police, also in the army. Absconded about 3 weeks ago. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Alton ( County).— For stealing, on 12th or 13th inst., from Bordon Camp, a single case silver watch dent in one side glass missing; 1 silver albert chain ( washed in gold), one long and two short links alternately; 1 green tweed suit with dark green stripes ( nearly new), three outside pockets, wide collar, black bone buttons, tight fitting trousers; 1 dark green tweed suit with stripes, similiar make, except trousers which have bell bottoms ; 1 light brown cap ; 1 light grey cap with large peak— ALBERT NORTH, age 20, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, wreath, clasped hands, true love, heart and Dolly right, ship, anchor, flag, lighthouse, and ship left forearm. HARRY CROSBY, age 20, height 5 ft 6 in., complexion fresh, hair red, eyes blue, indistinct tattoo marks right forearm, scar right wrist. Deserters from 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. 22. — Alton ( County). — For embezzling £ 1 12s. lid., 11th inst.— JOHN COLEMAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in,, complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, walks rather wide; dress, grey suit and cap, dark overcoat. Has been employed delivering milk. May endeavour to enlist. Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 23. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — For gross indecency with a male person, 26th ult.— WILLIAM DRAPER, alias WELLESLEY DRAPER, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion inclined to sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey. An actor. Has resided at Kings Langley, Herts. May seek employment with a theatrical company. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24.— Watford ( County).— For obtaining 4s. by false pretences, 8th inst.— TWO MEN, 1st, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, turning grey, wearing brown Inverness, waterproof cape, black bowler hat; 2nd, age 25 to 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) dark, clean shaVed, left upper teeth bad ; dress, heavy dark grey overcoat, dark trousers, green tie, green or grey cap. Leeds ( City).— On Bench warrant for J forearm; dress, grey overcoat with stripes, br fading to appear for trial at Leeds Assizes, on a | jacket and vest, bine trousers, large grey cap. charge of stealing 1 postal packets, the property of the Postmaster General— JOSEPH SMILES, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( weak) brown, mole right side of neck, 4 dots left APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued). gentlemen required rooms and that 2s. was required as recommendation fee, in order that their names be entered on the books, the 2 nd described signed a receipt " A Wilson, Electrician, 14 Cambridge Terrace, Edgware Road." HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 26.— Huntingdon ( County).— For an indecent assault, 24th ult.— JACK MAHONEY, ago 22, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion very sallow, slight moustache dark, eyes deep set, Irish accent; dress, dark suit, black overcoat, light cap. A coach body builder. Prior to coming to Huntingdon he resided at Peck- ham, London. Warrant issued. 27. — Huntingdon ( County). — For stealing £ 1 12s. 6d., 26th ult.— JOHN TAYLOR STEVENS, age 41, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, grey cap, new lace boots. During the past 6 weeks he has been | soliciting orders for a clothier. Had in his possesion a pedlar's certificate dated 4th February, 1910, granted at Huntingdon. He spoke of having lived at Uxbridge, and in Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Huntingdon. LANARKSHIRE. 28.— Glasgow ( City).— For uttering forged cheques to the value of £ 100 and stealing £ 10 on 11th and 26th ult.— DONALD McLEAN MAIN, age 25 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair light, clean shaved, prominent nose, slight cast in left eye, very large hands, well educated and of good address; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, heavy dark overcoat, with strap at back, bowler hat. He was employed as secretary and cashier to a Motor Garage and Repairing Company. Spoke of going to Australia. Is believed to be accompanied by A MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair and slight moustache dark; dress, light tweed suit, bowler hat. Both addicted to drink, and may be found in company of loose women. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Bury ( County).— Tor obtaining £ 11 10s. by false pretences at Heywood 25th January last.— ARTHUR MESSENGER, age 42, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes dark, nervous twitching of face, drawling speech. A blacksmiths' striker, native of Halifax. I He obtained the above amount from a female on the , promise of marriage. Warrant issued 30. — Bury ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings 3rd inst., a pair of boots ( recovered); 1 long green coat, with velvet collar; 1 pink blouse ; 1 pair corsets, and a grey under skirt— A WOMAN, ago 25, height 5 ft. 3 or | 4 in., complexion very ruddy, hair ( curly over ears) dark; dress, light grey shawl, green native of Newcastle- ou- Tyne. He is also wanted on a warrant for forgery. Information to the Chief Constable. Leeds. hat, black skirt. Has been a domestic servant, native of Oldham. Frequents common lodging houses. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 31 — Manchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences 5th inst.— JACQUES HOLLANS, age about 50, height 5" ft. 8 or 9 in., very broad build, full face, hair ( turning grey, long, bushy at back) and moustache dark, short nose inclined to turn upwards, walks erect, of foreign appearance; dress, dark mixture overcoat, dark coat and trousers, light vest, white tie, large black soft felt hat. He advertised in a local paper that he was authorised to engage waiters, cooks, etc., for the International Exhibition at Brussels, obtained the above sum from an applicant and absconded. Had in his possession a duplicate agreement drawn up in French to which he obtains the signature ami seal of a NotaryPublic and a Foreign Consul, and a quantity of printed matter; also exhibits matter relating to special railway and boat rates between the North of England and Brussels. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 32.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 1 by false pretences, 22nd' ult.— JAMES B. BENTLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion pale, moustache light brown, usually wears dark clothes and black hard felt hat. He answers advertisements in the Exchange and Mart, gives an address at Clapham, London ( a newsagent's), and obtains money on the pretence that ho has the article required. Warrant issued. 33.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM JOHN CHAMBERS, age about 43, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ginger; dress, grey suit, dark overcoat, grey cap. He was employed as coal salesman for a coal and iron company. Absconded 3rd inst. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Helens. LINCOLNSHIRE. 34.— Lincoln ( City).— For stealing, 26th ult., a horse and trap ( recovered)— Licence- holder HENRY NEVILLE, alias H. C. HARRISON, HORACE NALL, HARRY NALL, and JOHN NEWTON, Office No. 1915— 04, Case Nos. 90, 3rd December, 1909, and 11 and 12, 21st January, 1910, age 31, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion fresh, long thin face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, 2 scars left eyebrow and left cheek, dagger left forearm; wearing dark brown frieze overcoat with belt at back, grey cap turned up at back. A schoolmaster, native of Altrincham. He came to this city, 28th ult., stayed at a first- class hotel, and made the acquaintance of a veterinary surgeon, informing him that he was a member of that profession, and obtained one of his cards. After obtaining sums of money from other people in the city, he obtained the horse and cart referred to, which was subsequently recovered at Newark. He left Newark, lst inst., for Retford, where he stayed at a public- house one night, representing himself to be Mr. E. Porter Smith, M. R. C. V. S., Lincoln, and had in his possession several of Mr. Smith's professional cards. On the 2nd inst. he booked from Retford to Sheffield. This man will doubtless visit first- class hotels, and pass himself off as a veterinary surgeon, and will produce Mr. Smith's card in attempting to defraud people. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Lincoln. 35 — Grimsby ( Borough).— For carnal know- ledge— ARTHUR WATKIN, age 40, height 5 ft, 9£ in., slight build,- complexion sallow ( much pock- marked), hair ( turning grey at sides) dark brown, rather large moustache inclined to sandy, several cut scars on head, large scar on one hip; dress, dark blue coat and trousers, dark cap, violet colour muffler black flowers thereon, 2 patches in seat of trousers, may be wearing a blue guernsey. A wire worker, makes puzzles, flower stands, & c., which he sells in public houses. Has in his possession a pedlar's certificate, No. 101, issued at Grimsby, 13 th September, 1909. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Grimsby. He engaged a room for a week or ten days, on the 14th inst., and was last seen 15th inst. CLAIRE, and McALLISTER, Office No. S/ 98402, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair dark brown, full rosy face, eyes blue, stiff build, birthmark on neck; dress, black skirt, black sailor hat, trimmed black velvet. May be accompanied by a young woman; dress, long green jacket, dark brown hat, light trimming, fawn skirt. They had no money, and may be found soliciting prostitution, obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, or committing larceny from lodgings. Robinson has been convicted at South Shields and Sunderland of false pretences and larceny. The Prison Commissioners request that should Robinson be found she is to be arrested and a communication sent to them, when an officer will be sent for her.
