POLICE • 2.4 GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1910. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. I. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent ; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or hit immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. VOL. XXVII., No. 2724. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows:— ( a) All persons coming within Sections 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's imprison- ment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's impiisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the following offences:— Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Bankruptcy offences. Being found on enclosed premises. Breaking into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Burglary. Cattle stealing. Coining. Conspiracies of all descriptions. Embezzlement. Entering with intent to commit a felony. Extortion by threats. Felonious wounding. Forgery. Fraud. Frequenting. Horse- stealing. Housebreaking. Importuning male persons to commit un- natural offences ( Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, par. b). Indecent assault on female. Larceny. Mental degenerates. Obtaining goods and money by false pre tences. Possessing housebreaking tools. Procuration of women and girls. Prostitution, living on proceeds of ( Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, para. a). Receiving. Robbery. Sacrilege. Sheep stealing. Shopbreaking. Suspected person. Unlawful possession. Uttering counterfeit coin. Warehouse- breaking. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been previously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction or convictions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 6.— For stealing £ 99 6s. 5£ d., 11th ult.— HERBERT JORDAN, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, dragon, lion, Indian with knife, bull dog, Union Jack, eagle, snake and Japanese woman tattooed on arms, eagle, snake and dragon on chest; dress, dark brown jacket suit, fawn colour mackintosh, hard felt hat. A clerk, native of London. Has in his possession 10 £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. 57168 to 77 inclusive, dated 14th September, 1908. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. A native of London. Sentenced at Wells Quarter Sessions, 10th April, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 25th August, 1909, h. 174. Stated his intention at Nottingham, 13th ult., of tramping to London, but has not yet reported. May be dealt with where found. 2.— B Division.— For stealing ( servant) £ 138, 28th ult.— THOMAS VALENTINE, age 19, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar over right eyebrow, slovenly gait; dress, dark grey jacket suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. A native of Shepherd's Bush. 3.— D Division.— For obtaining a grey squirrel tie, 2 pairs of gloves, and £ 1 8s. by a worth- less cheque, No. 15/ a 405127 drawn on the London City and Midland Bank, Smithfield, Birmingham, on 20th ult.— A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), plausible manner. Tatman, Biggleswade. 8.— Luton ( County).— For withholding £ 69, monies of a Friendly Society— SYDNEY WILLIAM WEEDON, age 28,' height 5 ft. 8£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, 3 or 4 front upper teeth missing, back teeth much decayed, takes very short steps and carries his head forward; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Is a reservist of the Oxford Light Infantry, is fond of showing his Army papers in Public Houses, usually works with threshing machines or on farms, generally sleeps out or at low lodging- houses. LIDDLE, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., com- CA MB RIDGES HIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, 19th ult.— EDWARD MCDONALD ( supposed false), age 45 to 48, height 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT—( continued). about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, moustache ginger, of military appearance; wearing dark blue jacket and vest, white neckerchief, brown tweed cap, lace boots, South African war medal ribbon on vest. Accompanied by a girl age about 15, hair cut short; wearing black sailor hat and long woollen scarf. Stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. 11.— Cambridge ( Borough).—. For stealing 13th ult., a dark grey overcoat with green stripes, 2 flap pockets outside, 1 inside pocket— GEORGE HOWARD ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, complexion pale, hair and pointed beard dark, heavy moustache, lump about the size of a walnut over right eyo; dress, dark brown suit, trousers darker than jacket and vest, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Stated he was employed by a window cleaning company and was opening a branch here, also stated that he had been employed by the Nelson Tea Company, and that he was a native of Tunbridge. Warrant issued. 12.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 6th and 11th ult.— JAMES WEBB, age 60, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair and moustache grey, clipped close ; dress, slate colour overcoat, dark trousers, black hat, neckerchief, old brown leggings, lace boots. A rag and bone gatherer. Absconded 11th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 13.— Broxton ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, at Newton, 20th ult.— — TAYLOR, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark ; wearing dark overcoat, hard felt hat, carried an umbrella. He presented a book, purporting to be headed by the Vicar of St. Oswalds, Chester, authorising him to collect subscriptions on behalf of a widow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hicks, Broxton. 14.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Bramhall, 19th ult., a new dark grey jacket suit with green stripes; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, plain white dial, chased back, floral design, long fine gold chain and 2 watch keys attached; 1 silver penknife, 2 blades, ring one end, dent in handle : 1 old fawn colour mackintosh — REGINALD SUMMERS, age 16 to 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket, black trousers, dark check muffler, dark grey cap, old lace boots. A farm labourer, native of Oswestry. He deserted from the Man- chester Regiment, at Ashton- under- Lyne, 2nd ult. May endeavour to join the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Matlock ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 7s. l£ d., 19th ult.— THOMAS HOLMES, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes supposed dark, round face, shuffling gait ; dress, dark overcoat, vest and trousers, black hard hat. A gardener or labourer, native of Brailsford. He attends Church Army missions. Supposed previously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Clarke, Matlock. DEVONSHIRE. 16.— Devonport ( Boivugh).— For failing to report. Licence holder JAMES PRICE, alias WARMINGTON and JOHN BENNETT, Office No. 247- 06, age 33, height 5 ft. 5£ ins., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, wart on upper lip, " E. W. M." right forearm, a native of London. Sentenced at Plymouth Quarter Sessions, 28th June, 1906, to 3 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for tool stealing. Liberated on licence, 19th April, 1909, which expires 16th prox., d. g. 519. He left Devonport, 19th ult., for Reading. Is a dangerous thief. Warrant issued. DORSETSHIRE. 17.— INimborne ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 15s. 6d. by false pretences— JAMES IIENDRIE, a Scotchman, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, bad teeth, inclined to be bow legged ; dress brown knicker suit ( much worn) and cap. Is fo id of dancing and addicted to drink. A dairyman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ricketts, Wimborne. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. DURHAM. 18.— Gateshead ( Boi- ough).— On warrant, he being a necessary witness against two men under remand on a charge of procuring abortion—- AARON TAYLOR, age 25, height about 5 ft. 8 in., very slight build, long thin face, hair dark brown, eyes blue; dress, dark grey suit, square cut jacket, cut low, high vest, small tie, heavy dark grey overcoat, hard felt hat, lace boots. A dental mechanic. Information to the Chief Constable, Gateshead. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 26th ult., a silver Geneva watch, dial cracked, small piece chipped out between numerals 4 and 6 ; and a silver albert, long thin links, George III. shilling and a fourpenny piece attached— HARRY SMITHERS, age 20 to 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., hair and eyes dark, clean shaved, several whitish spots on face, resembling warts; dress, black jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap. He obtained lodgings, stated he was going to work on the telephone lines, and left on morning of 26th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 20 .— Grays ( County). — For embezzlement, DAVID KEMP, age 35 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins., complexion pale, hair light ( bunched in front), thin face, very bad teeth ( irregular and much discoloured), walks with very short quick steps.; usually wears brown mackintosh and leggings. A grocer's assistant, native of Grays, Essex. Warrant issued Information to Inspector Mules, Grays. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 21.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining £ 4 by false pretences, 19th ult.— REGINALD E. WALKER, age about 26, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fair, pimples on face, clean shaved, tattooed both arms, bust of a woman and " Linda " on one ; dress, dark green suit, greenish overcoat, white sweater, green and white scarf, bowler hat. Is fond of speaking as to his running abilities, takes lodgings stating he is taking part in a running match in the district, obtains money and decamps. Frequents hotels and may be found in company of sporting men. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 22.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences during January— BROR DRAKE, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache light brown, can speak several languages; dress, black overcoat and jacket, green vest, plaid breeches, black bowler hat, brown leggings and boots, carried a hunting crop. Is believed a Swede. Stated he came from a college at Oxford, and was staying at Clifton for 3 or 4 months to complete his study of the English language, also stated his horse would arrive in two days time, and asked the proprietor of the hotel to obtain stabling for it. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 23.— Alton ( County).— For stealing, at Bordon Camp, 28th ult., a brown lounge suit, 1 grey over- coat ( black velvet collar), 1 pair patent leather boots, and £ 2 15s.— PERCY WALTER HUNTLEY, age 20, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue ; wearing the stolen clothing. Is an absentee from the lst West Kent Regiment. Enlisted at Maidstone, lst October. 1907. 24.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 1 lis. 6d., at Deadwater, 29th ult.— JOHN REEVES, age 19, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, pepper and salt colour suit, military shirt, odd boots ( 1 military), green cap with brown stripes. A hawker. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 25.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining a suit of clothes by false pretences, 13th ult.— ALDOUS, alias JONES, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark, scar under left eye, one finger missing; dress, dark blue or black suit, dark skull cap. HEREFORDSHIRE. 26.— Hereford ( County).— For stealing, at Longtown, 18th ult., a silver English lever watch, open face, seconds hand missing— A MAN, age 19, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1910. height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in, complexion fresh, hair dark, small light moustache ; dress, dark coat and vest, cord breeches, dark cap, leggings. Has been an inmate of an Industrial School. Tramps the country and seeks work at farms. A native of London. Information to Supt. Cope, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hertford ( Count)/).— For night poaching with violence at Hertingfordbury, lst inst.— ROBERT LEE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, walks erect; dress, usually dark jacket, mole- skin trousers, cap. Has served in the Navy. A navvy. May seek employment on large public works. He is a notorious poacher, and may become very violent on arrest. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford. 28.— Ware ( County).— For stealing a Post Office Savings Bank Book, No. 6765, issued at Ware to Danzy Joseph Hawkes, and 1 pair brown kid gloves with woollen tops HARVEY ( supposed false), age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, blotchy face, square jaws, clean shaved; dress, dark striped overcoat, vertical pockets, turned back cuffs, dark lining, " W. S. Green, Outfitter, St. Albans," inside collar, blue serge jacket and trousers, light drab colour vest, green grey cap, violet tie, brown boots. He obtained lodgings by stating he was employed at the railway station as a goods clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Ware. 29.— St. Albans ( City).— For stealing a quantity of clothing ( recovered)— ADA PETERS, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, full face, prominent cheek bones, well advanced in pregnancy, addicted to drink; dress, long dark jacket, dark green stripes, black dress turning green, brown motor hat, blue or white scarf, lace boots. Is accompanied by a girl age 3, hair auburn ; dress, blue costume, white straw hat trimmed with pale blue ribbon, black stockings, patent leather shoes, strap fastening, a piece of tin around toes. Apprehended, See Case No. 86. Warrant issued. 30.— St. Albans ( City).— For obtaining £ 3 10s. 6d. by a worthless cheque on the Bedford branch of the London, County and Westminster Bank, 31st ult.— FRANK DREW, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, rather long face, wearing gold- rimmed pince- nez, of good address; dress, dark clothes, bowler hat, black tie, with small pearl horse- shoe pin. Carries a brown brief bag. He took lodgings at a hotel, presented the cheque, received cash for same, and decamped. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, St. Albans. KENT. 31.— Seabrook ( County).— For stealing from officers' quarters at Shorncliffe Camp, 21st ult., a brown Irish frieze motor overcoat, wind sleeves, double breasted, side pockets lined velvet; 1 gun- metal stop watch, " Smith, 9, Strand, London, S. W.," on face, leather strap attached ; 1 silver cigarette case, " H. G. Fisher, R. F. A., Winning Team, 1907, Border Point to Point," engraved on outside; 1 amber cigarette holder in leather case; 1 black bowler hat; 1 greenish cap; 1 briar pipe; 1 silver cigarette case; 1 set plain gold studs; 6 fancy vest buttons, mother of pearl, rolled gold edges and centre, in case; 1 gold half hunter Geneva lever, maker, ' Barrie, Edinburgh, " T. T. P., 11th Hussars," engraved outside of inner case; 1 gold chain; 1 silver cigarette case, " County Kildare Polo Tournament, won by 11th Hussars," engraved thereon; 1 small silver notebook, and £ 1 4s. 6Jd.— HENRY WATTS, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, brown suit with grey check and dark blue stripes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollands, Seabrook. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report — Licence- holder THOMAS WATKIN, alias THOMAS RIMMER, THOMAS CLARKE and JACK JOHNSON, Office No. 3472- 99, age 34, height 5 ft. 2£ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, 2 scars right of forehead, blue mark base of nose and on lobe of left ear, mole left cheek. A native of Liverpool. Sentenced at Shrewsbury Assizes 30th November, 1906, to 4 years penal servitude for receiving. Licensed 29th December, 1909. d. g. 29. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 34. — Stalybridge ( Borough). — For em- bezzling £ 200, monies of a Burial Society— TOM PRATT, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark, prominent nose turned slightly to one side; dress, dark tweed suit, long dark brown overcoat, hard felt hat, lace boots. A cotton operative, native of Stalybridge. Is a member of the Odd Fellows Friendly Society, Manchester Unity, and may visit lodges. Absconded 27th ult. Warrant issued. KENT. 35.— Margate ( Borough).— For neglecting to maintain his w ife and family— ALBERT JAUNS, a German, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., good build, complexion fair, hair light, may be wearing slight moustache, eyes ( small) grey. SHROPSHIRE . £ 20 Reward. 36.— Oswestry ( County).— For embezzling £ 500, 2nd November, 1909— HERBERT WALTER INSULL, age 29, height about 5 ft. 11 in., good build, complexion pale, hair ( rather long on top) and eyes ( slightly weak) dark brown, clean shaved, wears pince- nez, of good address and athletic appear- ance ; dress, brown jacket and vest, black and white check breeehes, supposed brown tie, black hard felt hat, brown leggings and boots.
