THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 1910. VOL. XXVII., No. 2720 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension if sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6.?. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is targe or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be fortoarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Letters relating to criminal business addressed by other Police Forces to Scotland Yard are very frequently delayed, owing to the envelopes containing them being directed incorrectly or inadequately. A collier, native of Wotton- under- Edge, Gloucestershire. Has served in the Grenadier Guards. Warrant issued. 3.— F Division. — For stealing 15th inst., 15 silver spoons ( 11 table, 4 dessert), some with" S," some with crest " demi leopard rampant " thereon, 47 do. forks ( 17 table, 15 dessert, 2 fruit ( fluted handles), 12 fish, engraved ( white ivory handles) some crest " demi leopard rampant "; 1 cigarette case, engraved, Indian ; 2 do. lozenge boxes ( 1 heart shape, 1 square); 1 do. ash tray oircular, silver, Indian; 2 do. postage stamp boxes ( 1 imprint of 3 penny stamps, 1 plain with drawers stamp engraved thereon); 2 pencil cases ( 1 gold telescopic seal, crest " demi leopard rampant," and " J. S." at end); 1 white ivory oval work box about 5 in. long " M. S." in black thereon, contain- ing sewing accessories; 1 white travelling watch, in hammered silver case, 2 Indian brass spoons, engraved ornamental, 3 electric light globes. A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache brown, supposed foreign accent; wearing brown overcoat, black hard felt hat. 4.— T Division.— For stealing 20 £ 5 Bank of England notes. Nos. 33967 to 33986 dated 30.1.09 and about £ 40, between 27th and 29th ult., FRANCIS BUTLER PARR, age 47, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, right eyelid stitched, addicted to drink ; dress dark grey overcoat, brown- ish tweed suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. May be carrying a new brown Gladstone bag. A stonemason, believed a native of Canada. Frequents political meetings and may act as a Liberal agent. Warrant issued. 5.— X Division.— For indecency with male person— GEORGE WILLIAM ALEXANDER, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, wreath and crossed flags G. W. A. V. R. out- side right forearm, mermaid inside, crucifix inside left forearm, all in red and blue ink, lame left leg; dress, brown striped overcoat, blue serge suit, green cap, blue striped tie, brown lace boots. A teacher of languages, native of Willesden. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. A YRSHIRE. 6.— Cumnock ( County). — For abandoning their child, 25th November, 1909— JAMES CRAW- FORD, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, thin features, hair and moustache red- dish, appeared to be in delicate health; dress, dark jacket suit, brown overcoat, dark muffler, dark tweed cap, lace boots. Is believed to have served in the Army. A labourer or street singer, native of Uddingston, Lanarkshire. SELINA TAYLOR or CRAWFORD, age 27, medium height, stout build, complexion pale, hair reddish; dress, light grey three- quarter length jacket, black skirt, grey shawl, grey motor cap, lace boots. Said to be a native of London. A street singer. Pretends to be blind, wears blue glasses, and is led by Crawford. Both previously convicted in Lanarkshire in March, 1909. Is believed to be making for London. Frequent low lodging- houses, and are well known in Lanarkshire, Dumfriesshire, and Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7. — Bedford ( Bwough). — For stealing, 6th inst., a lady's gold Geneva watch, chased back; 1 do. long chain, ball pattern ; 1 do. gold dress ring set brilliants ( several missing); 1 do. ( stone missing); 1 do. gold buckle ring ( stone missing) • 1 gold locket; 1 do. brooch, horseshoe pattern, set brilliants — WESTON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., very slight build, complexion very dark, piercing eyes, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark suit, dark soft felt hat, wore a gold coloured chain with locket in centre, also a ring on one little finger. He took lodgings, 1st inst., representing that ho intended to open a drapery business. Absconded 6th inst., leaving behind a box containing bricks wrapped in paper. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 8.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— WILLIAM TILLBROOK, age 24 to 27, height about 5 ft. 8 in., full round face, hair and moustache ginger; dress, dark suit, black and white plaid cap, white necker- chief, wore a metal watch chain, may be wearing a red silk wrapper. He took lodgings stating he was a cleaner on the Great Eastern Railway. Absconded 31st ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 9.— Altrincham ( County). — For obtaining food, lodgings, clothes and money by false pretences, at Timperley, between 2nd October, 1909, and 4th inst.— GEORGE HENRY HILL, alias GEORGE 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. HOWARD, age 43, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, double chin, hair dark brown ( turn- ing grey), eyes grey, well educated and of good address ; dress, blue serge coat and vest, blue trousers with grey stripe, light cap, lace boots, broad, patch on side of left. Said to be well known at Bolton, and to have been convicted there, also at New Mills. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Okell, Altrinchain. 10.— Crowe ( County).— For stealing, 30th or 31st ult., a Star bicycle, 24- in. frame, flat handle- bars, black grips, inverted front brake, front part of back- inverted brake missing, rubber pedals, Warwick tyres, Bleumel mud- guards, Brooks' lady's saddle, Hyde's free wheel, Smith's band on tyres, dark cape strapped on back, very rusty, and for larceny ( till)— BERT WENLOCK, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, heavy moustache light; dress, dark grey jacket suit, cap, lace boots. A cycle repairer, supposed native of St. Asaph. Warrant issued. 11.— Crewe ( County).— For obtaining 2 pairs of boots by false pretences— Licence- holder HENRY NEVILLE, alias HORACE NALL, HARRY NALL, and JOHN NEWrTON, Office No. 1915- 04, Case No. 90, 3rd ult., and Tabular Form, 7th inst., age 31, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, long features, hair dark brown ( clean shaved), eyes grey, scars left eyebrow and left cheek, dagger left forearm; dress, dark grey trousers, broad stripe, light overcoat, heliotrope tie, hard felt hat, button boots. Carried a red book. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 12.— Lisoard ( County).— For stealing ( by trick), 3 bottles of cod liver oil— HORACE NALL, alias HARRY NALL, JOHN NEWTON, and HORACE E. NALL, age 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, cut scars left forefinger and ring finger, right forearm, left eyebrow, and cheek, blue dagger back of left forearm; wearing grey overcoat, black hard hat. A native of Altrincham. See Case No. 5, 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McHale, Liscard. 13.— Macclesfield ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings 12th inst, a gold oval locket, chased, photograph of woman inside, short neck chain attached, 22- ct. gold; 1 gold cased curb bracelet, thick links ; 1 lady's gold dress ring, 18- ct., set blue stone and 2 or 3 pearls ; 1 pair round ear drops, green stones, mounted in silver; 1 pair small do. round paste stones, silver mounted; 1 pair gold do. round, one slightly bent; 1 gold crescent brooch, set white paste stones; 1 gold bar brooch ; 1 small metal button hook and £ 2 9s. WILLIAM BROWN, age 50 to 60, height ( 5 ft. 5 or 6in., good build stoops slightly, oomplexion fresh, rather heavy features, hair dark brown and heavy moustache turning grey; dress dark grey jacket suit, grey and black three- quarter length overcoat, grey cap, brown boots, carried a small black hand bag. Represented himself to be an antique furniture dealer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Macclesfield. DURHAM. • 14.— South Shields ( Borough).— For failing to report.— Licence- holder GEORGE STOKELL, Office No. 357- 03, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar right of forehead and two right of upper lip, lost right arm; dress, blue reefer jacket suit, dark cap. A sailor, native of North Shields. Sentenced at Northumberland Quarter Sessions, 28th June, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for shopbreaking. Licensed 11th October, 1909. a. h. 393. Last seen in this Borough 15th inst., has been for several years in America and speaks with a slight American accent, is a dangerous shopbreaker, usually breaks into public houses by removing the slates or skylight, consumes any victuals he may find, then searches the bedroom for money ; he has also broken into pawn- shops in a similar manner. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South Shields. ESSEX. 15.— Epping ( County).— For stealing a pair of brown boots, size 7 ; 1 lady's keyless silver watch, blue centre with gilt flowers, short silver chain with tassel attached, and 30s.— ERNEST COLE, ago 31, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, crucifix tattooed left arm ; dress, light dust coat, dark grey mixture suit, double- breasted vest, dark cap, black and white wrapper. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Epping. 16 — Saffron Waid en ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), 21st December, 1909, at Stanstead, a motor bicycle, 3£ horse power, Quadrant 1907, accumulator ignition, 26- in. wheels, new belt, saddle bag, one fastening missing, switch on handle- bar, back Bowden brake, Bosch plug, Palmer tyre front, Clincher tyre back wheel, front fork and stays have been repaired and shows signs of damage, patent stand behind, bent stem handle- bars, marks on bicycle where side car had been fastened, enamelled black, tank dark green, arrow thereon, acetylene lamp, registered plate, C. E. 799.— T. LEFEBUltEE, a Frenchman, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., well set up, complexion fresh, full face, clean shaved, hair light, prominent scar over right eye, hesitates when speaking; dress, light mackintosh, light brown cap, white neckerchief, black leggings ( tight fitting). A mechanic or chauffeur, has had letters addressed to the Post Office, South Kensington. Left behind a Sunbeam bicycle, No. 5330, 27- in. frame, enamelled black, gold lined, back- pedalling brake, front rim do., Roman rims, raised handle- bars, white celluloid brass- bound grips, old Dunlop tyres, Lucas spring dome ( L. s. d. make) bell, Lucent oil lamp, Middlemore saddle, tool bag, oil bath, gear case, black lamp ( supposed stolen). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hailstone, Saffron Walden. G LOUSES TERSHIRE. 17.— Staple Hill ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) 2 silver watches, 22nd November, 1909— JOHN EDWARD COLLINGS, age 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown turning grey, whiskers and moustache, eyes hazel, scar outside right forearm, over right eye, mole right cheek. A native of Brighton. Previously convicted of similar offences at Hove, Brighton and Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 18 3s. 3d., 4th inst.— ERNEST HERBERT SWEET, alias ERNEST HERBERT SCOTT HERBERT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. llf in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) black, large Roman nose ; dress, blue jacket and trousers, black and white knitted vest, grey cap, usually wears a brown Inverness coat. A clerk. Was employed as Liberal agent for Alton district, entrusted with the above amount and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. 19.— Andover ( County).— For stealing 30s. from his lodgings— ALBERT PORTER, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue ; dress, brown coat, grey trousers, white muffler, black patent leather shoes. A native of St. John's, Dorset. Was discharged from the Bedford Regiment in June last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowles, Andover. 20.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult. ( with another man in custody), an overcoat ( recovered) — GEORGE JEWELL, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light, clean shaved, lame right leg, walks on toes and usually with a stick ; dress, pepper and salt colour jacket and vest, blue trousers, skull cap, white muffler. May be found playing a mouth organ in low public houses. A native of Gosport. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cottle, Gosport. HER TFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hertford ( County).— For an offence under the Probation of Offenders Act, 1907, and also for larceny at Welwyn, 17th November, 1909— MABEL VOSPER- THOMAS, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes grey; dress, navy blue skirt, black jacket and hat, low shoes with high heels. She absconded from Lady Somerset's Home, Duckshurst, Surrey, on 7 th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford. 22.— Ware ( County).—- For stealing a Post Office Savings Bank Book, No. 6765, issued at Ware to Danzy Joseph Hawkes, and 1 pair brown kid gloves with woollen tops HARVEY ( supposed false), age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, blotchy face, square jaws, clean shaved ; dress, dark striped overcoat, vertical pockets, turned back cuffs, dark lining, " W. S. Green, Outfitter, St. Albans," inside collar, blue serge jacket and trousers, light drab colour vest, green grey cap, violet tie, brown boots. He obtained lodgings by stating he was employed at the railway station as a goods clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Ware. 23.— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings) — ARTHUR DAREWOOD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache very dark; wearing dark clothes and cap, pink muffler. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. KENT. 24— Canterbury ( City).— For failing to appear at Quarter Sessions, 10th inst., charged with larceny— NEVILLE RAYMOND STEVENSON CARTER, age 29, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, small features, hair black, eyes brown, ducal crown and H. S. G. right forearm, OLIVE left forearm; dress, blue ribbed serge jacket and trousers, light check fancy vest, black knot tie, white silk wrap, soft light tweed shooting cap, patent leather shoes, carried a partridge cane with crook handle, silver mount. A dentist, stated he was horn in Colombo. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Canterbury. 25.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing from a hotel, 15th inst., a quantity of jewellery ( recovered, pledged at Margate)— M. RAITCHEVITCH, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion very dark, hair black, clean shaved, eyes dark, thick nose, speaks very little English ; dress, black fur coat, dark fawn colour and blue check knickers, grey stockings, motor cap, brown boots, black goloshes, wore gold wire ring set greenish stone on left little finger. Supposed a native of Servia. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 26 — Maidstone ( Borough).— For} stealing 4 pairs of lady's boots ( recovered), and 1 pair of do. black button, size 4— ALICE TAYLOR, age about 18, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in. complexion sallow, full round face; dress, brown coat and skirt, black straw hat with red band. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. 27.— Margate ( Borough).— For neglecting to maintain his wife and family— ALBERT JAUNS, a German, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 in., well built, com- plexion fair, hair light, supposed clean shaved, eyes ( small) grey. A baker. Warrant issued. 28.— Margate ( Borough).— For neglecting to maintain his wife and family— ELI SOLE, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes hazel, scars back right hand, base right thumb, and left forefinger, addicted to drink. Works as a kitchen porter, potman, or in stable yards, also as a jobbing painter. Apprehended, see Case No. 98. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. 29 .— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th and 29th ult., 2 skirts ( 1 black, 1 silvery grey) — EMILY WATTS, alias WALLACE, Office No. 2126- 04, age 45, height 5 ft. 2£ in., stout build, complexion dark, full face, hair brown, eyes hazel, addicted to drink; dress, old black skirt, long old- fashioned plaid cape, close fitting hat with veil. A cook, native of Southampton. She obtained employ- ment here about 3 months ago by advertising from 8, Chapel Road, Southampton, for a situation in a hotel, boarding house or otherwise, town or country. She was discharged a week later, obtained private lodgings, and applied at registry offices for situations. Upon obtaining one, she stays a few days, commits larceny, and disposes of the property at pawnbrokers and wardrobe dealers. During the time she was here, she received letters and money from South- ampton and Winchester, and stated she had friends residing at Duke Street, Marylebone, London. About a week ago, she obtained a situation at Dorchester, received 10s. for her fare, but did not go. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 30.— Bury ( County).— For stealing 14th or 15th inst., a pair moleskin trousers; 1 pair lace boots, size 9 ; 1 blue cotton shirt; 2 white flannel singlets; 1 pair white woollen pants ; 1 white, red and blue silk muffler ; 1 large blue and green silk muffler, imitation engines thereon, and £ 2— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 9J> in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, woman with cloak on inside right forearm; flowers and Friendship outside right forearm. A native of Bury. May be wearing the stolen clothing. Absconded 15th inst. Information to Supt. Noblett Bury. 31 — Liverpool ( City).— For stealing ( by trick), 30th ult., a brown leather dressing case 24 in. by 16 in. by 8 in., lined red leather, 2 nickel locks, " Finnigans, Ltd." on lining, fitted with 5 cut glass bottles with silver tops; 2 miltary hair brushes, ivory backs; 2 razors, " Finnigan" on blades, ivory handles ; 1 folding mirror, ivory handle; 1 strop; 1 paper knife LEVER, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, thin face, hair light, clean shaved; dress, light grey suit with stripes, trousers per- manently turned up, dark overcoat with belt at back, bowler hat. He engaged apartments, telephoned for the dressing case to be sent, and that he would pay on delivery, on its arrival he told the messenger it TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1910.
