POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2706. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 5. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6- v. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows:— ( a) All persons coming within Sections 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's imprison- ment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( c) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the following offences:— Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Assaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. Bankruptcy offences. Being found on enclosed premises. Breaking into churches, houses, shops, warehouses, & c. Burglary. Cattle stealing. Coining. Conspiracies of all descriptions. Embezzlement. Entering with intent to commit a felony. Extortion by threats. Felonious wounding. Forgery. Fraud. Frequenting. Horse- stealing. Housebreaking. Importuning male persons to commit un- natural offences ( Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, par. b). Indecent assault on female. Larceny. Mental degenerates. Obtaining goods and money by false pre tences. Possessing housebreaking tools. Procuration of women and girls. Prostitution, living on proceeds of ^ Vagrancy Act, 1898, Sec. 1, para. a). Receiving. Robbery. Sacrilege. Sheep stealing. Shopbreaking. Suspected person. Unlawful possession. Uttering counterfeit coin. Warehouse- breaking. But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been previously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction or convictions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1 Convict Supervision Office.— For failing to report— Licence- holder DOMINIC MACK, alias WILLIAM SMITH, DOMINIC McEVOY, GEORGE BARRETT, GEORGE SUM- MERS, THOMAS O'CONNOR, HENRY FRITH, THOMAS DUNN, and THOMAS HENRY, Office No. 2815- 01, age 43, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, nose been broken, scar right temple, left jaw and left eyebrow. A native of Sheffield. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 26th March, 1907, to 3 years penal servi- tude for larceny ( person). Licensed 25th June, 1909. R. X. h. 242. Reported at Newcastle- upon- Tyne, 9th ult., his intention of tramping to London, but has not reported since. May be dealt with where found. 2.— E Division.— For stealing a piano organ ( recovered)— JOHN WITCHALLS, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue; dress, light suit, light overcoat, double breasted, large buttons, grey cap, lace boots. Supposed a native of London. Has a good baritone voice, and may be found singing outside public houses, or travelling with a piano organ. Warrant issued. 3.— J Division.— For stealing a coat, 8th ult.— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair ; dress, dark grey overcoat, dark suit, black hard felt hat. Is believed to be in Wales, and obtaining money by producing cards with " Allen G. Garrett, 62, Sale Street, Bethnal Green," thereon. Warrant issued. 4.— If Division.— For embezzling £ 18 14s. 5d. — ROBERT EMMETT BASIL HEALY, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes ( slight cast in left) blue; dress, black morning coat and trousers, black hard felt hat with mourning band. Was employed as a dentist's manager. Warrant issued. 5.— L Division.— For stealing £ 3 10s.— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com. plexion dark, thin face, hair dark brown, front upper teeth decayed, stoops ; dress, green jacket suit, greenish cap, lace boots. He stops boys who are delivering goods, represents that he is employed at a public house in the neighbourhood, gives an order, obtains money by stating the publican is short of change, then enters the public house and leaves by another door. 6.— T Division.— For stealing, 24th ult, a motor car, Index No. H 3315, 24- 40 h. p. F. I. A. T., side entrance, touring body, painted dark red, upholstered in red leather, cape cart hood, folding wind screen, Stepney spare wheel, Clincher non- skid and Collier tyre on back wheels, 2 plain do. front, Rushmore patent headlight, paraffin side lights, electric tail light, 2 extra flap seats at back— A MAN, name supposed REES, age 26 ( looks older with hat off), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion and hair ( bald on top) dark, clean shaved ; dress, dark green or grey suit, fawn colour mackintosh overcoat ( greasy), crushed strawberry silk muffler, black hard felt hat, probably a dark grey frieze motor coat ( too large). Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For obtaining a typewriter by a worthless cheque on the London and County Bank, Uxbridge Branch, 19th October— W. G. ANDREWS, alias WILTON ASHLEY, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, jacket suit, bowler hat. A theatrical manager, late of Drayton Avenue, West Ealing. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 8.— For obtaining goods by false pretences ( long firm fraud)— HYMAN JACOBS, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, sharp features, hair and moustache light, inclined to ginger, eyes bluish grey, walks slightly on toes; dress, dark tweed suit, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. ANGLESEY. 9.— Holyheatl ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— DAVID PHILIP ROBERTS, alias JOHN DAVID WILLIAMS, age about 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes ( cast in left) brown; dress, dark suit with white stripes, dark overcoat, short sleeves, cap, heavy nailed boots. Supposed a native of Llansannan, Denbighshire. Represents himself to be a policeman at Llanelly, and is fond of the company of policemen. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 10.'— Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN GRADDEN, alias SAUNDERS, age about 38, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, turning grey, fairly well educated, very plausible manner, A native of Basingstoke. He calls upon customers of a firm of engineers ( by whom he was formerly em- ployed), states he has been on a journey, and after paying bills has run short of money, and borrows sufficient to pay his fare back to Basingstoke, which he promises he will return upon his arrival home. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 11.— Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2— WILLIAM LEFINE or LEFAY, a Frenchman, age 60, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair and trimmed beard grey, eyes blue, addicted to drink; dress, dark grey long jacket suit, reddish fancy vest, new cap. A tailor. He obtained a book of patterns of cloth, and offered to supply a costume at a low rate, received an order for a costume and the above amount to pay for the cloth. Has been in Win- chester Workhouse Infirmary during the past six weeks. Lately employed in London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. BUGKINGHA MS HI RE. 12.— Great Marlow ( County).— For wilful murder of a newly- born male child at West Wycombe, 24th ult.— AMY, alias JENNY PANELL, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light to sandy; dress, three- quarter length fawn colour coat, light shawl, grey motor hat, heavy nailed boots. She has a child in an old perambulator which she pushes about the country; usually stays at common lodging- houses. She cohabits with A MAN, tall, age about 30, hair black, piercing eyes; dress, dark clothes, hawks tin saucepan lids, & c., with whom she may now be accompanied, the child and perambulator being left with relatives. C A RNA R VONS HIRE. 13.— Carnarvon ( County).— For obtaining £ 6 19s. lOd. by false pretences— DAYID PHILLIPS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat, had with him a dark rain- proof coat ( stolen). A native of Morriston, Glamorganshire. He represented himself as agent to Liptons, Ltd., and took orders for groceries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. CHESHIRE. 14.— Altrincham ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- holder HENRY NEVILL, alias HORACE NALL, HARRY NALL, and JOHN NEWTON, Office No. 1915- 04, age 31, height 5 ft. • 8J in., complexion fresh hair, dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, dagger left forearm, 2 scars left • eyebrow and left cheek ; dress, dark jacket suit, green overcoat, hard felt hat. A schoolmaster, native of Altrincham. Sentenced at Winchester Sessions, 10th April, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for false pretences. Licensed 14th July, 1909. h 154. Okell, Altrincham. 15.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 24th ult., a lady's 18- ct. gold lever watch, No. 32640, gold dial, chased back, and a lady's long gold chain, square link pattern HURLEY, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and heavy moustache dark, eyes dark brown, top teeth very prominent; dress, dark coat, red figured vest, dark grey striped trousers, red silk muffler, black tie, fawn colour mackintosh, button boots with patent leather fronts, grey cloth tops, light fawn colour gaiters. Stated he was an excise officer. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. CUMBERLAND. 16.— Brampton ( County).— For stealing £ 13 7s. 6d.— JOHN DAVIDSON, age 42, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, front teeth decayed ; usually well dressed. A native of Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. Absconded 30th September last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lancaster, Brampton. DERBYSHIRE. 17 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment, 20th ult.— D. JUDE, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and moustache ( waxed at ends) dark; dress, probably dark lounge suit. A tailor's assistant. Is fond of amateur theatricals and organizing enter- tainments for schools, & c., in which he styles himself a vaudeville artiste, under the name of Warde Meredith, musician, entertainer and ventriloquist. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 18. — Dumfries ( County). — For obtaining board, lodgings, and 13s. Id. by fraud— C. H. HARTWELL ( supposed false), age about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair and very slight moustache grey, 1 front upper tooth missing ; dress, dark jacket and trousers, fancy vest, black ground with mauve stripe forming a check, black three- quarter length sac back overcoat, brownish cap with faded stripe down seams, yellow lining, green centre, rubber collar, light lace boots, gold or yellow colour albert, with masonic badge as appendage. Represented himself as a doctor from Boston, U. S. A., and had come to study sheep farming. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 19.— Dumfries ( County). — For stealing, 26th ult., at Langholm, a pair of dark tweed trousers ( green ground with mauve and brownish stripes), tight fitting, cross and hip pockets, almost new, fit a man 5 ft. 5| in. in height; a silk muffler, black and mauve striped— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, has several raised marks on face, walks with a slight limp, stated that he suffered from a sore foot; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, blue trousers, dark tie with imitation gold safety pin, light grey cap, brown kid gloves, boots much worn, wearing gold rimmed eyeglasses, Ironclad watch, double curb chain with large silver medal attached, gold ring on left little finger, shabby genteel appearance. Stated that he was a minister, had left college three months ago, and was waiting for a situation. Had in his possession a bicycle, upturned handle- bars without mud- guards. Left behind a pair of dark grey striped tweed trousers ( fit a small man), side and hip pockets, lined with black and white striped sateen half way down back, bone buttons, strap at back, very little worn, supposed stolen elsewhere. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Dumfries. DURHAM. 20— Bishop Auckland ( County).— For obtaining 5s. 6d., by false pretences, between 26th and 29th October— JOHN JOSEPH ILEY, alias J. COLLINS, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, indistinct scar inside right wrist, small cut scar on forehead, lump on right side of neck; dress, green, grey and blue narrow striped jacket and trousers, cream colour vest with black and white stripes, bow tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots with narrow toes, wore a double Albert. A native of Wolsingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daley, Bishop Auckland. 21.— Jarrow ( County).— For assault with intent to rob, 12th ult.— WILLIAM TRAINOR, age 56, height 5 ft. 5 in., rather thin face, complexion fair, hair, moustache and eyes grey, prominent cheek bones, speaks Northumberland dialect; dress, dark grey jacket ( rather large for him), dark grey vest, dark trousers, scarf, light cap. A bricklayer, has worked in various places in the counties of Durham and Northumberland, and also in Scotland, and may seek employment on new buildings or at collieries. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Durham, or to Supt. Dryden, Jarrow. ESSEX. 22.— Southend ( County). — For obtaining £ 2 6s. by false pretences, 28th August last— J. BAYLEY, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue; dress, dark jacket suit and overcoat, tweed hat. A native of London. Sells toys and post cards. Warrant issued. 23.— Southend ( County).— For stealing 3 pigs, 22nd ult.— A MAN ( known as Gipsy or Galloping Dick), age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., good build, com- plexion, hair and moustache dark, very talkative, Irish or Welsh accent, of military appearance ; dress, black overcoat ( faded), dark jacket and vest, khaki trousers, dark cap, white muffler, lace boots. A labourer, stated he was a Welshman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. FLINTSHIRE. 24.— Mold ( County).— For abduction of a girl under the age of 18 years— EDWARD HENRY EVANS, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion sallow, hair black ( partly bald in front), eyes dark brown, head slightly inclined forward; dress, black suit, light tie with purple spots, light cap, light lace boots, carried a basket portmanteau secured with straps. A tinplate worker, native of Llandaff, near Cardiff. He acted as trainer to the local football team, and has a knowledge of ambulance work. Warrant issued. Description of girl— Gladys Roberts, age 17 years and 10 months, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion very pale, hair dark brown, eyes brown, large space between front teeth; dress, blue cloth skirt with faint white stripes, white muslin blouse, 2 rows of needlework down front, grey three- quarter length coat, blue felt hat, rim turned down, trimmed blue satin ribbon and 2 buttons in front, lace shoes. A native of Mold. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 25.— Treharris ( County).— For stealing, 14th ult., a bay horse, 10 years, 14- 3 hands, white star on forehead, newly shod, very tender feet, scar over right eye, hipped right hindquarters, a number of old scars on body— WILLIAM EVANS, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, stoops, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel; dress, blue serge coat and vest, pepper and salt colour trousers, light cap, lace boots. Stated until recently he was employed at a public- house at Pontypool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gill, Treharris. 26.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing a port manteau and clothing— WILLIAM SANTEFORD COX, alias ALFRED JAMES LAMBERT, ERNEST COX, and ARTHUR JAMES, Office No. 2230- 01, Case No. 27, 19th ult., age 28, height 5 ft. 6^ in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair brown, eyes blue, top teeth very full, 1 dot right and 3 dots left forearm; dress, slate colour jacket and trousers, dark woollen fancy vest with red spots ( top button missing), check cap, dark tie. An agent, native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 27.— Dursley ( County).— For stealing! 15s. 2d. from his lodgings— CHARLES PERKINS ( supposed false), age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, clean shaved, eyes brown, ring tattooed 3rd right finger, scar right side of tongue, Welsh accent; dress, dark pilot coat with velvet collar, dark coat and vest, dark brown cord trousers, dark red neckerchief, dark cap ( motor shape), heavy nailed boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Perkins, Dursley. HAMPSHIRE. 28.— Aldershot ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Farnham Union, 1st January, 1908— THOMAS MORRISON, age 48, height 5 ft. \\ in., complexion freckled, hair ( turning grey) brown, probably clean shaved, large birth mark under right shoulder blade, cut mark left forefinger. A cab driver. Native of Bothwell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 29.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — WILLIAM JOHN JONES, Office No. 462- 04, Case No. 34, 26th ult., not now wanted, he having reported at Bournemouth, 8th ult. HERTFORDSHIRE. 30.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a suit of clothes, at Royston, 20th ult.— EDWARD ALDRIDGE, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., round shoulders ( one higher than the other), complexion sallow, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes ( near sighted) blue, sometimes wears glasses; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, trousers tight fitting, grey cap. A coachman, is well known at Hastings and St. Leonards. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. 31.— Watford ( County).— For stealing ( trick), 19th inst., a cigar case and a letter case, green leather covers— A MAN, age 18 or 19, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark, clean shaved; wearing dark overcoat, green cap, white silk necker- chief, white woollen gloves. Identical with MAN, Case No. 27, 22nd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1909. THE POLICE GAZETTE. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. LANCASHIRE. 32 — Liverpool { City).— For stealing about £ 90, 19th ult.— FRED PLATT, age 21, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion rather pale, thin face, hair light, clean shaved, eyes dark, broad forehead, one front lower tooth projects, usually has his mouth open, of smart appearance; dress, brown tweed reefer suit, pink tie, hard hat with flat brim, gold twisted wire ring 011 third left finger. A clerk. Is fond of music halls and pierrots. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Chief Constable, Liverpool. RENFRE WS HIRE. 33.— Paisley ( County).— For theft and fraud, 24th and 28th October last— MARY MATHIESON, alias REID, KATHLEEN McKENZIE, ANNIE ANDERSON, and JESSIE FERGUSON, S. C. R. 101- 08, age 26, height 5 ft. 5-£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar 1| in. long on right side of chin; dress, long dark grey jacket, greenish skirt, grey hat, grey furs, spotted veil, brown shoes. A native of Strathblane. Purports being a domestic servant 011 holiday, takes lodgings, commits larceny, and obtains goods from co- operative stores by pre- senting trading book of the person with whom she resides. Is also wanted in Dumbartonshire and Edinburgh. Previously convicted at Dumbarton, Motherwell, Hamilton, Worcester, Ayr, and Kilmarnock. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Paisley. S TA FFORDSHIRE. 34. CHESHIRE. 89.— Middlewich ( County).— For obtaining food and lodging by false pretences— CHARLES RICHARDSON, Office No. 3273- 01, age 42, height 5 ft. 7\ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, Roman nose, scar over right eye; dress, dark greenish striped suit ( square cut jacket, tight fitting trousers), hard felt hat, blue silk tie, a native of New- castle, Staffs. He called at a private hotel, gave the name of Charles Norman, and stated he had been sent by a Manchester gentleman to engage stabling for the hunting season and to take lodgings for himself at the hotel, made arrangements, stayed 2 days, and absconded. He obtained the above by representing himself to be Mr. George Jennison, of Bell Vue Gardens, Manchester, presented that gentleman's card which he had obtained the previous day from Mr. Jennison, who loaned him 2s. on a statement that he had lost his purse in Belle Vue Gardens, promising to return the money. Has been convicted at Warrington, Grimsby, Manchester, Bedford, Clonmel, Munster, Wells, Chester, and Winchester. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Macclesfield.
