NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2G, 1909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2704. KEGrXJLATIOiSrS. 1 All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6s. should, be. made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is rtquired to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chiff officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the •' act, referring to the number of the announce nent for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement uill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The chirge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICH GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid it the ordinary rale for printed matter sent by post within the. United Kingdom. The attention of Chief Constables is called to the following, with regard to the re- transmission of copies of the POLICE GAZETTE :— " Postage should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter on all copies of this GAZETTE sent by post within the United King- dom, except such as are despatched in proper course from a Metropolitan Goverment Office, or from the Publishing Office of the GAZETTE. Copies sent abroad should be prepaid at the rate of a halfpenny for every two ounces." 1.— The composition of the Friday No. of the " Police Gazette " wiiI be found arranged for easy reference as fol- lows : - ( a) Regulations at top of first page. Warrant issued. 2.— T Division. — For stealing ( bailee), a bicycle ( recovered) . BECKETT, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, 1 finger deficient; dress, brown suit, dark cap. A carman, native of Hampton Hill, Middlesex. Will no doubt visit Salvation Army Officers, and may be found in the vicinity of Cardiff'. Warrant issued. 3.— V Division.— For obtaining £ 44 2s. by false pretences, 28th ult.— CHARLES FORRESTER SHERLOCK, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair light, wears gold framed glasses; dress, dark jacket suit and overcoat, black bowler hat, lace boots. A house agent, native of Paddington. Warrant issued. 4.— W Division.— For being a suspected person found on enclosed premises — EDWIN OAKES, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, oval face, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket suit and cap, lace boots. A showman at auction sales, native of Thornton Heath, Surrey. May visit Oxford and Pembroke. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. GITY OF LONDON. 5.— For obtaining a typewriter by a worthless cheque on the London and County Bank, Uxbridge Branch, 19th ult. — W. G. ANDREWS, alias WILTON ASHLEY, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, jacket suit, bowler hat. A theatrical manager, late of Drayton Avenue, West Ealing. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 6 by a worthless cheque, 5th inst.— WILLIAM JOHN KINDER, M. D., age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, oval face, aquiline nose, clean shaved, well spoken, Irish accent; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat, white chamois gloves. He called on a tradesman, presented a cheque, No. X/ A. 139560, on the London City and Midland Bank, 281, High Road, Chiswick, for £ 82 16s., drawn by J. Poore & Son, p. p. G. W. Poore, made payable to " William John Kinder, M. D.," whom he represented to be himself, gave a local address which was false, asked the tradesman to pass the cheque through his bank, obtained £ 6 on account, stating he would call for the balance in a few days. He also called on several other shopkeepers, presented the cheque, and in some cases he was wearing gold- rimmed spectacles, and at others gold- frame pince- nez, which he pro- duced on entering the shop, and which he cleaned and adjusted ; has other cheques in his possession on the London and County Bank. Warrant issued. 7. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN GRADDEN, alias SAUNDERS, age about 38, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, turning grey, fairly well educated, very plausible manner, A native of Basingstoke. He calls upon customers of a firm of engineers ( by whom he was formerly em ployed), states he has been on a journey, and after paying bills has run short of money, and borrows sufficient to pay his fare back to Basingstoke, which he promises he will return upon his arrival home. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Reading. 8.— Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2— WILLIAM LEFINE or LEFAY, a Frenchman, age 60, height 5 ft. 6 ins., complexion fresh, hair and trimmed beard grey, eyes blue, addicted to drink; dress, dark grey long jacket suit, reddish fancy vest, new cap. A tailor. He obtained a book of patterns of cloth, and offered to supply a costume at a low rate, received an order for a costume and the above amount to pay for the cloth. Has been in Win- chester Workhouse Infirmary during the past six weeks. Lately employed in London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Windsor. BRECONSHIRE. 9.— Hay ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., a coat ( recovered)— JAMES WILLIAM BENNETT, age 51, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair grey, moustache dark grey, eyes blue, cross flags, crown, J. B. right forearm, anchor left forearm, cat, dog, man and gun on breast; dress, old black coat and vest, old grey trousers, black bowler hat, lace boots. A groom, attends horse shows, races, & c. Previously convicted of larceny at Stone and Kington. See Case No. 18, 4th October, 1907. Warrant issued. 10.— Ystradgyniais ( County).— For obtain- ing a suit and mackintosh coat by false pretences, 7th ult— DAVID PHILLIPS, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion dark, thin features, moustache black; dress, new dark grey suit, black bowler hat, light brown mackintosh with dark stripes. A native of Morriston, near Swansea, Stated he was a representative of Lipton's Limited, also a superintendent of the London, Edinburgh and Glasgow Assurance Company. Warrant issued. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT—( continued) CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 11— Cambridge ( County).— For stealing, 13th inst., a Star bicycle, No. 118739, the word " Star " on down bar and back mud- guard— WILLIAM MAYO or MAYHO, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, clean shaved, hair and eyes ( bright and restive)" dark, high receding forehead, large Roman nose; dress, grey overcoat and trousers, brown jacket and vest, flowered silk mixture tie, dark grey cap. Supposed native of Leytonstone, stated he had served as a bandsman in the Army, also that he was employed at a brewery at Cambridge and Bishop's Stortford. Warrant issued. 12.— Cambridge ( County).— For stealing at Trumpington 20th inst., a lady's small keyless gun- metal watch and a number of stamped printed postcards, bearing address " Messrs. Matthew and Son, Limited, The Stores, Cambridge "— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, may have slight moustache, wearing dark grey overcoat, black hard felt hat with narrow brim. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Castle Hill, Cambridge. 13— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing lst inst. a Centaur bicycle, No. 126903 on top head lug, 26 in. frame, Cambridge tyres, raised handle bars, 2 roller lever brakes— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair almost ginger; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat, brown boots, and mackintosh. He produced a card with " Edward Stone, R. P. C., Radcliffe- on- Trent," which he is suspected of stealing. Warrant issued. 14.— Cambridge ( Boi- ough).— For stealing 2nd inst. 4 fancy vests— GEORGE BAILEY, alias GEORGE HODSON, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache brown ( turning grey), generally wears glasses; dress, old suit and cap. A bootmaker. Has been convicted at Leicester and Bedford. Absconded 15th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CA RNA R VONSHIRE. 15.— Carnarvon ( County).— For obtaining £ 6 19s. lOd. by false pretences— DAVID PHILLIPS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat, had with him a dark rain- proof, coat ( stolen). A native of Morriston, Glamorganshire. He represented himself as agent to Liptons, Ltd., and took orders for groceries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Griffith, Carnarvon. CHESHIRE. 16.— Crewe ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 11th and 12th inst.— DAVID THOMAS, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes dark, square chin; dress, brown suit and cap, trousers darker than coat and vest, lady's ring on ( supposed one) left finger, gold coloured watch, steel chain. He stated he was a cable inspector of the National Telephone Company. Had in his possession a bicycle, alu- minium rims and frame, crown and name of a Cardiff maker on frame. Warrant issued. 17.— Crewe ( County). — For stealing bicycle described in Case No. 64, 19th inst.— A MAN, age 50, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache sandy ( turning grey); dress, grey jacket and vest, dark blue trousers, yellow socks drawn over bottoms of trousers, light cap, brown boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. CUMBERLAND. 18.— Penrith ( County).— For leaving his family chargeable to the Penrith Union, 26th ult.— JOHN STOREY, age about 39, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair dark, moustache light brown, eyes blue, scar from back of one thumb to wrist. A farm labourer, native of Penruddock. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barron, Penrith. 20 Chesterfield ( County). — Supervisee JOSEPH JOSIAH ORRIDGE, Office No. 1849- 07, Case No. 99, 19th inst., not now wanted. 21 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For obtaining 18s. by false pretences, 3rd inst. — WILLIAM WILSHER, alias HARTLEY, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full red face, hair and eyes dark brown, believed clean- shaved, scars loft side of head. A hawker, native of Norton Woodseats, Sheffield. He calls at houses, presents a card with Willsher Bros., Linoleum Warehouse, Tabard Street, Borough, London, S. E., stated he had been laying linoleum at a local institution had a remnant of 7 or 8 yards for sale instead of returning it to London, but when measured there was only half the amount represented. Sometimes lives in a van and accom- panied by a woman. Warrant issued. 22 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For stealing, 19th inst., a green rain- proof overcoat, 2 slip pockets, slit bottom of back, fastens with a button, green bone buttons— — HULME, age about 25, height about 6 ft., complexion rather sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, 2 upper front teeth missing; dress, dark jacket suit, blue tie, black hard hat, carried a stick. Stated he came from Nottingham to manage the local branch of a cash chemists. Information to the Chief Constable, Chesterfield. DEVONSHIRE. 23.— Ex. eter ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— DAVID BANNISTER ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., good build, complexion, hair and moustache ( waxed) dark, of smart appearance and good address; dress, blue melton overcoat, fancy dark blue ribbed vest, dark trousers, black bowler hat, carried two brown sample bags. Stated he was a Quaker. He called upon small shopkeepers, stated he represented a Novelty Company, London, for the sale of photo- lene, which he states by rubbing on paper re- produces sketches and photographs from newspapers, & c., leaves 4 or 5 gross of packets, for which he obtains payment under the pretence of sending a further supply, also that he will make the shopkeeper sole agent for the district. The photolene is found to be useless. AVarrant issued. 24.— Exeter ( City).— For obtaining by false pretences, 11th ult., a 22- ct. gold wedding ring, 393 and XH. S scratched inside; 1 9- ct gold seal, blood stone one side lighter stone the other— WILLIAM GOULD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., sjight build, complexion pale or sallow, moustache ( well trimmed) and eyes dark; wearing a light mackin- tosh. He took lodgings at Taunton, 30th September last, answered advertisements in the Feathered IFwld, obtained money orders from various parts of the country under the pretence of supplying poultry, came to Exeter on 11th ult., and obtained the above articles by presenting money orders post dated, together with a card " William Gould, Coal Merchant, 2, Albemarle Street, Taunton," thereon, the orders were passed through a bank, but were returned marked " payment stopped by remitter." Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Exeter. DERBYSHIRE. 19.— Ashbourne ( County).— For stealing at Cubley, 12th or 13th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— A j MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion pale, rather round face, hair and small moustache dark, 2 upper front teeth missing ; dress, dark jacket and vest, blue trousers, green cap, brown boots. Appearance of a plumber or joiner. Information to Supt. Burford, Ashbourne. DURHAM. 25.— Jarrow ( County).— For assault with intent to rob, 12th inst.— WILLIAM TRAINOR, age 56, height 5 ft. 5 in., rather thin face, complexion fair, hair, moustache and eyes grey, prominent cheek bones, speaks Northumberland dialect; dress, dark grey jacket ( rather large for him), dark grey vest, dark trousers, scarf, light cap. A bricklayer, has worked in various places in the counties of Durham and Northumberland, and also in Scotland, and may seek employment on new buildings or at collieries. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Durham, or to Supt. Dry den, Jarrow. ROBERT WAIN WRIGHT, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair ( curly), slight moustache and eyes dark, nose slightly bent, pigeon chest, bow legged, slightly splay feet, swinging gait, scar front of 1 thumb; dress, dark grey sac- back overcoat, dark jacket with blue stripe, brown waistcoat, trousers, and cap. A native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend on- Sea. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 28.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing £ 13 lis.— WILLIAM CON NELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, long face, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, blue serge coat and vest, tweed cycling breeches, box cloth inside each knee, light cap, black leather leggings with straps. A stableman or cab driver. Previously employed by the London Universal Omnibus Com- pany. Warrant issued Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. ESSEX. 26.— Chelmsford ( County).— For obtaining food by false pretences, 12th inst.— WILLIAM STEVENS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., broad shoulders, complexion very fresh, broad square face, dimple each side of face near mouth, snub nose, jaw believed to have been broken left side, hair light ginger, eyes sunken, clean shaved ; dress, grey jacket, green cord trousers and cap, blue tie with white spots, lace boots. A signal fitter. He took lodgings 12th inst., stated he was sent from Romford to work at Chelmsford for 6 months, absconded 13th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 27.— Southend" On- Sea ( County). — For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque on the London and South- Western Bank, Brixton branch— GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Dursley ( County).— For larceny— HENRY HARWOOD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion, hair and slight moustache ! dark, limps as though he suffered from an injury to hips or loins ; dress, grey jacket and vest, supposed pepper and salt coloured trousers, tied at knee. A native of Chipping Campden. ( Arrested, see Case No. 114.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Perkins, Dursley. 30 — Gloucester ( County). — For stealing £ 1 2s. 6d., and obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences 5th inst.— ROBERT SMITH YMAN, alias GILBERT, Office No. 159- 02 ( Case No. 34, 10th September last), age 60, height 5 ft. | in., com- plexion fresh, hair grey ( almost white), eyes hazel i ( full), scar left of forehead, front of neck, and each forearm, right wrist been broken; dress, very dark suit ( square cut), dark cap, black satin tie. A native of Warwick. Has been convicted at Birmingham, Worcester, Stafford, and Coventry. Warrant issued. 31— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 9th mst., a silver- plated teapot and cruet ( recovered)— WILLIAM SANTEFORD COX, alias ERNEST COX and ALBERT JAMES LAMBERT, Office No. 2230- 01, age 28, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar centre forehead, dot right and 3 left fore- arm, pock marks on forehead ; dress, dark suit, check cap or brown soft felt hat, green tie. A native of Bristol. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. 32.— Stroud ( County).-— For stealing, 18th inst., a blue- grey mare pony, 7 years, about 12* 1 hands, recently clipped, hog mane ( with foretop left on), short tail, shod with frost nails; a trap, very low Battledon car, varnished oak colour, oval iron tyres, Bridgwater Carriage Company or Works on caps of wheels, mud- guards half covering wheels brakes on back of wheels very low down, silver- plated japanned lamps, on the back of the near shaft is part of a rubber brake block, and underneath off shaft a piece of rubber piping sewn on, back seat attached to front by hinges, which lifts and is strapped to rail of seat, flap at back of car. shuts up and locks. A set of old black silver- mounted harness— LIONEL HARRIS ( correct name MONTGOMERY), age 25 to 28, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair thick black, clean shaved ; dress, long dark melton overcoat, silk cord braid loops, barrel- shaped braided buttons, dark suit and cap or bowler hat. Appearance of a commercial traveller. Supposed a native of New- castle- on- Tyne. He hired the pony and trap to go to Nailswurth, and has not since been heard of. He was convicted of embezzlement at Newcastle 7 or 8 years ago, at which time he was employed by a laundry company. Warrant issued. 33.— Stroud ( County).— For absconding from Stroud Union Workhouse and stealing a purse and ; £ 2 10s.— HENRY TOWNSEND, age about 28, i height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, slightly round shoulders, stoops slightly, complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, dark coat and vest, dark or cord trousers, muffler, dark brown cap. Frequents common lodging- houses. Has worked on farms at Tetbury, Malmesbury and Abertillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 34.— Portsmouth ( Boi- ough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder WILLIAM JOHN JONES, Office No. 462- 04, age 34, height 5 ft. 6f in. com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar right of forehead and right eye. Frank thin face, hair light, clean shaved, eyes dark, broad forehead, one front lower tooth projects, usually has his mouth open, of smart appearance; dress, brown tweed reefer suit, pink tie, hard hat with flat brim, gold twisted wire ring on third left finger. A clerk. Is fond of music halls and pierrots. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Chief Constable, Liverpool.
