POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1909 VOL. XXVI., No. 2694. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8s. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6s. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6.?. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 4 5 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. 14. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. Reformatory School, Carlton, 4th inst.— HENRY HURRELL, age 14, height 4 ft. 10 in., good build, complexion fresh, ruddy face, hair and eyebrows dark, eyes hazel; dress, small dark blue overcoat, cord trousers with red piping, Oxford shirt. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Abingdon ( County).— For obtaining, 5th inst., by a worthless cheque on Union of London and Smiths Bank, Oxford Branch, a brown cart mare— E. SCOTT, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion ruddy, moustache grey, appearance of a dealer, accompanied by a boy, age 13 or 14. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Abingdon. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 9. — High Wycombe ( County). — For em- bezzlement between 24th ult. and 1st inst.— SAMUEL PARSONS, age about 19, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, 1 front top tooth broken, black spot left side of nose, walks quickly and upright; dress, new green mixture suit, coat with lap seam across back and point in centre of back, tight fitting trousers, large peak cap with white stripes, white silk necker- chief, light lace boots. An inveterate cigarette smoker. Is a member of the King's Royal Rifles ( Militia). A native of Whitechapel, London. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 19 lis. 9d. 28th ult.— FREDERICK WILLIAM SMITH, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and moustache light; dress, dark brown suit, dark soft felt hat, lace boots. A native of Oxford. For the past 18 months he was employed as manager at a typewriting depot, absconded 4th inst., and has since obtained 2 typewriting machines by false pretences from firms in London. Warrant issued. 11 — Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining 2s. by false pretences, 29th ult. MORRIS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., rather thick- set, hair and moustache dark, of good address ; wearing dark clothes. SPECIAL NOTICE. IN certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore, authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient for the purpose; but if a photograph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to complete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. 4.— G Division.— For obtaining by a worth- less cheque on the London and South- Western Bank, Whitechapel Branch, 11th inst., a new crank axle milk float, inside and outside of body painted pale yellow, wheels and shafts yellow, lined 3 lines of green, name boards painted pale green, gold chamfers centre panels, sides and front painted French grey, " J. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 12.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing a gold ring from a surgery, 19th inst.— DR. RILEY, alias O'RILEY and BOYD, age 34 to 38, height 5 ft. 11 in. to 6 ft., complexion ruddy, hair dark brown, of military appearance, Irish accent; dress, mingled tweed suit, light tweed cap, thick heavy shooting boots. Supposed a native of Dublin. He called upon a doctor, stated he was on his way to Dublin, but had not sufficient money to pay his fare and asked for assistance, shortly after he left, the ring was missing, and subsequently found pledged in name of Donald Church. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 13.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing a bricklayer's trowel, 9- in. blade, much worn, handle split, ferrule missing, " W. H. S. Hunt and Son, Brade Co." on blade; 1 do. hammer, head cracked; 1 do., hickory handle— A MAN, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, thin features, hair and moustache grey, beard about 2 weeks growth, walks erect; dress, blue serge ( morning coat) suit, dark grey cap, blue muffler, lace boots. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 14 — Macclesfield ( County). — For em- bezzling 6s. 6d., and stealing a pair of cream- coloured • combinations, at Wilmslow— JAMES DENTON, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark; dress, brown suit and boots, dark cap. Is a reservist of the 14th Hussars. Has been employed as a cabman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoole, County Police, Macclesfield. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For abandon- ing her illegitimate child, 25th ult., HANNAH ELIZABETH RIDGARD, alias KING, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion dark, sharp features, hair dark brown; dress, black coat and skirt, black apron, white sailor hat trimmed black band, wears earrings with two drops, and a string of pale blue beads. Travels the country with a small box hawking laces and lavender, has a pedlar's certificate, supposed issued at Doncaster in May last in name of King. She has stayed at common lodging houses with a man, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair and eyes dark. A bricklayer's labourer. Warrant issued. ESSEX. 16.— Chelmsford ( County).— For obtaining 2s. 6d. by false pretences, 30th ult.— A MAN, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, square face, hair light turning grey, eyes believed grey, broad between eyes, broad flat nose; dress, old dark coat turning green, rough greenish grey cap. He called at a school and informed a teacher that the head mistress had told him to ask for 2s. 6d. to include her name in a directory. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 17.— Romford ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings, between 2nd and 9th inst., by false pre- tences— JACK PICKETT, age about 22, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown; dress, blue serge suit, light green cap and tie, lace boats. Stated he was employed at a corn dealers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. FLINTSHIRE. 18.-— Mold ( County).— For stealing at Buckley, 8th inst., a grey pony, aged, small trap, a set of black harness, 2 carriage rugs, 1 fawn colour mackintosh, and a whip— A MAN, supposed JOHN BERRY, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut close) dark brown, eyes ( piercing) grey, good teeth ( slightly prominent), strong Lancashire accent; dress, brown mixture coat and vest, faded, pearl buttons on sleeves, brown cord trousers, dark blue muffler with white flowers thereon, cap, strong lace boots. Supposed a native of Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. GLAMORGANSHIRE. — Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences—. TAMES COULTHARD, age 32 ( looks older), height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, no hair on head or face, well educated; dress, black coat and vest, light striped trousers, light tweed cap. Has been a shop walker. He called upon customers of a well known drapers in this city, and represented that owing to his having lost his hair he had been discharged. May be accom- panied by a woman, age about 35, stout build, addicted to drink. Warrant issued. 20.— Cardiff ( City).— For larceny ( lodgings)— , ARTHUR LAURENCE, alias MANN, age 36, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes grey. He left Cardiff, 23rd ult. accompanied by his wife, and luggage labelled Foregate Street Station, Worcester. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21.— Gloucester ( County).— For failing to report — Licence- holder JAMES WARD, alias SMITH and WILSON, Office No. 150- 00, age 35, height 5 ft. 3 ins., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, T and dot right forearm, right foot deformed; dress, navy blue pilot jacket suit, black shirt, dark cap. A hawker, native of Croydon. Sentenced at Northampton Quarter Sessions, 20th October, 1904, to 5 years penal servitude for house- breaking. Liberated on 2nd licence 27th ult., which expires 8th January, 1910. a e 307. May be dealt with where found. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. 22.— North leach ( County).— For stealing a quantity of hemp sacks— GEORGE POWERS, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown, white wart bottom of left ear ; dress, black jacket and vest, white cord trousers, dark cap, blue muffler. Will probably seek employment as a farm labourer or navvy. i Absconded 13th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Northleach. 23 — Staple Hill ( County).— For stealing foreign stamps and obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, at Filton, 16th ult.— S. COLES, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( short), eyes grey, front teeth slightly decayed, 2 large lumps on forehead, wrist strap right wrist; dress, long holland motor coat, blue serge coat and trousers, light green fancy vest, light cap, dark ] tie. Supposed a native of Pembroke, S. Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Alton ( County).— For stealing £ 10 at Bordon Camp 11th inst.— WILLIAM WALTERS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8| ins., complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, eyes hazel, scar left side of forehead and left cheek; dress, navy blue coat and vest, dark trousers with white stripes, light cap. Is a sergeant of the lst East Yorkshire Regiment. Stated his intention of proceeding to Canada. A native of Birmingham. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Leominster ( County).— For burglary at Leintwardine, 7th ult., and stealing 9 nickel plated j teaspoons marked " P "; 1 table spoon ; 4 silver egg spoons marked " L"; 5 silver teaspoons marked " M. J. W." and " M. W."; 6 nickel plated dinner forks and 5 dessert do., marked " P"; 1 silver watch chain with crooked sixpence; 1 Bavarian silver watch; silver medal with " Gladys M. ; Watkins" thereon; 1 light striped shirt; 2 pairs blue worsted stockings— GEORGE WILSON HOGGINS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 41 in., strong build, complexion fresh, thin face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, scar supposed top of one cheek, short neck; dress, blue pilot jacket, blue slop, light brown cord trousers, dark grey cap, strong lace boots, carried a bundle in a red handkerchief. A labourer, native of Orleton, Hereford; usually works with traction engines. Is believed well known in Gloucestershire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rooke, Leominster. HERTFORDSHIRE. 26.— BishoprS Stortford ( County).— For obtaining £ 22 and £ 18 10s. by false pretences, 14th inst.— THOMAS DADDY, alias WILSON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat; and TWO MEN— lst, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., good build, complexion fair, full face, hair and moustache brown, turning grey; dress, grey suit, tight- fitting trousers, row of buttons on cuffs of jacket, grey cap, brown leggings; appear- ance of a costermonger. 2nd, age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion pale, hair and short beard turning grey, bushy eyebrows, rather corpulent; dress, brown suit and cap. The first described introduced himself to persons attending a sale and informed them that he had a horse for sale, which was stabled at a public- house yard, one of the others then interviewed the intended purchaser to whom he offered £ 2 should he complete the deal and stated that he knew where to dispose of the animal for a much larger amount, the purchase was made and the money paid over, after disposing of the horse twice in this manner they disappeared. They were accompanied by THREE MEN— lst, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., good build, broad shoulders, complexion pale, large features, hair black, short stubby moustache, beard about a week's growth, eyes grey ; dress, dark striped coat and vest, dark trousers and cap, cream colour neckerchief, brown lace boots. 2nd, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers, hard felt hat, brown leggings, of horsey ap- pearance. 3id, age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., rather corpulent, hair dark, clean shaved; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, grey soft felt hat. Description of mare, which is detained here ( supposed stolen): a dark bay, about 6 years, 14 hands, thick set, white blaize down forehead, off- hind fetlock white, white saddle marks both sides, scar about in. long on near fore fetlock, lame off foreleg, rough mane and j tail ( docked). In good condition, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hassell, Bishop's Stortford. 27 .— Hitchin ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 29th ult., 3 pairs of hair brushes ( 1 pair with polished wood backs, 1 pair white celluloid, 1 pair black wood)— A MAN, age about 18, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, clean shaved, eyes dark; dress, dark suit, black overcoat and cap. ; Stated he had been sent for the goods by the wife of the vicar who was unable to get out. Identical with man, Case No. 21, lst inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. KENT. 28.— Ramsffate ( Borough). — For stealing, 12th inst., a Star bicycle, free wheel, 2- speed gear, black enamelled frame and mud- guards, flat handle- bars, inverted lever brakes, connecting rod of back brake works along top tube, white, red and black celluloid grips, gear case, Dunlop tyres, plated rims, rubber pedals, tyre bell worked from handle- bar with chain, believed slight " Star " transfers on back mud- guard and head, celluloid pump — FREDERICK FELLY, age about 19, height about 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair light; dress brownish tweed coat, blue serge trousers, golf cap, green tie, boots, with plain fronts, wore trousers clips, of military appear- ance. He stayed at a coffee house from 7th to 12th inst., and stated he belonged to the 4th Dragoon Guards, and was on furlough. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For larceny ( lodgings), 18th ult.— CARL VON BLECKINGER, an Austrian, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., good build, complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, prominent nose, front teeth decayed; dress, grey tweed cycling suit, dark stockings with fancy tops, lace boots. A photographer. Warrant issued. 30 — Liverpool ( City).— For stealing £ 35 from a safe in a sub- post office, 30th ult.— THREE MEN, lst, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, slight moustache; dress, brown suit, hard hat. 2nd, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, bluish skin, hair ( curly at sides) and moustache dark; dress, dark suit, morning coat, hard hat, patent leather boots. 3rd, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache light; dress, dark tweed suit, striped knitted silk tie, hard hat. Appearance of a bookmaker. The first des- cribed man visited the post office, purchased 6 stamps and tendered a sovereign in payment, later in the day he was seen loitering near; the second man afterwards visited the post office, and pretending that he had lost some money in the street enticed the sub- postmaster outside, who was spoken to by the third man, on returning to the office he found the money had been stolen from the safe. 31.— Liverpool ( City).— For causing wilful damage to utensils and fittings while confined in H. M. Prison, Liverpool— RONA ROBINSON, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., long features, hair auburn, eyes FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1909. THE POLICE GAZETTE. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS IN CUSTODY. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— Committed for trial at Liverpool City Sessions on a series of charges of housebreaking— HERBERT MARTINDALE, alias JAMES MARTINDALE, alias TEAGUE, Office No. 1632- 06, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. TEAGUE, Office No. 880- 07, age 25, height 5 ft. 3| in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. May be wanted elsewhere. Information to the Head Constable, Liver- pool. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. NORFOLK. 33.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining 8 bullocks by false pretences 28th August last— RICHARD TAYLOR, alias WILLIAM SMITH, age about 50, tall, hair and moustache light, clipped, may of London. He gave a cheque for the above on the London and Provincial Bank, 180, New Cross Road, New Cross Gate, which was returned marked " R. D." Is identical with Henry Jordan, alios G. H. Daffon, sentenced to 6 months imprisonment at Rotherham in February last. 2nd, Fred —, age about 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved, of smart appearance; dress, blue or black suit, black bowler hat. Both spoke with London accent. They took apartments 3rd inst., as Dalton & Co., advertised in The Stage as follows : " Wanted partners for Music Hall double act, also fit- up to tour smalls, own company with good single act, Photo, H. Dalton, Post Office, Nottingham." The complainant answered the advertisement, and signed a contract to act as bookkeeper and take small parts, left the bags with them, and arranged to meet next day to proceed to London. They left behind a small cardboard box, " With Dr. Tibbies' compli- ments, Mr. F. Ash worth, 91, Hercules Road, Lambeth, S. W.," on label.
