GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JULY 23, ] 909. VOL. XXVI., No. 2668. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE HEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken, upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences will be inserted at a cost of 8.?. per portrait, and engravings of stolen property at a cost of 6.?. per photograph or sketch, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the charge will be higher. A remittance of 6?. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent ; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and HO warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 9. The force inserted 6, 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties' "" which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be n the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of tUe fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement icill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form , and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. All copies of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. 10 11. 13. 14 NOTICE. 1.— The composition of the Friday No. of the " Police Gazette" will be found arranged for easy reference as fol- lows ( a) Regulations at top of first page. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metro- politan Police the Photographs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Supposed a native of Finland. He is also wanted for obtaining money by false pretences. Answers advertisements in the Grocer and other papers, repre- sents himself as agent to the Anglo- Scandinavian Produce Company, and requires managers for various branches about to be opened, induces persons to sign an agreement and deposit £ 5 or £ 10 as security, and absconds. A native of Michaelstown, Co. Cork. Has served in the Army, Sentenced at Surrey Quarter Sessions, 7 th April, 1908, to 12 months' hard labour for burglary. 5.— V Division.— For failing to appear to his bail, charged with gross indecency— ALBERT FELIX IIIRSCHFELD, age 28, height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes hazel, scar on right wrist; dress, dark grey lounge suit, white straw hat, lace boots. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing, between 10th and 12th inst., a number of carpenter's tools ( recovered)— GEORGE SWAIN, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., good build, weight about 13 stone, complexion very fresh, hair dark turning grey, moustache light, red nose slightly twisted, appearance of a man addicted to drink; dress, dark clothes and light cap. A carpenter, supposed native of Maidenhead. Stays at common lodging houses, and tramps the country. Left Bedford, 12th inst. Information to the Chief Constable, Bedford. BR EC ONSHIRE. 7.— Brynmawr ( County). — For cruelty to his children— PETER REYNOLDS, age 26, height 5 ft. 7| in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown, woman's head P. I. R. right arm, I love M. B. and two women's heads on left arm; roughly dressed. A native of Llanddysul, Carmarthen. Warrant issued. 8.— Brynmawr ( County).— For stealing ( by trick) a pair of heavy nailed boots— RICHARD BAILEY, age 50, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, stubby moustache, stoops ; dress, dark suit and cap, scarf. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 9._ Aylesbury ( County). — For failing to report— Licence- holder ARTHUR BELCHER, alias BECKETT and WHITMAN, Office No. 1002- 05 ( Case No. 10, 9th inst.), age 29, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes grey, scar corner of right eye and back of neck, has a habit of biting his finger nails; dress, blue serge suit and cap. A native of Newbury. Sentenced at Buckinghamshire Assizes, Aylesbury, 2nd February, 1907, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 19th ult., h. 55. Is very clever at drawing " family circle" cards, the names on which can only be observed by holding card in certain position. A native of Crewe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 11.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing at Romily, 5th inst., an English lever watch, dial damaged at numerals 5 and 6, maker " Wright, Coventry " : 1 silver albert, curb pattern— EDWARD THORNLEY, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion sallow, hair and eyes ( left supposed artificial) brown; dress, navy blue serge suit, coat double- breasted, black tie, hard felt hat, lace boots. A mechanic, native of Fairfield, Lanes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dutton, Hazel Grove. DENBIGHSHIRE- 12.— Llangollen ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), 6th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— A MAN, age 30 to 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., round face, hair ( rather long) dark, clean shaved, front teeth decayed, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark brown suit and cap, lace boots, wearing a supposed gold ring set white stone. Stated he was an electrician at a colliery. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable., Wrexham. ESSEX. 13.— Braintree ( County).— For burglary at Felstead School, 8th inst., and stealing a silver keyless watch ; 1 silver watch and chain ; 1 tan colour rubber tobacco pouch— JOHN MORGAN, alias FRED REES, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, . hair dark brown, eyes hazel, small scar outside right forearm; dress, old brown suit, old cap with long peak, heavy boots. Terry, Braintree. 14.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing, 13th inst., a bay horse, aged, 15 J hands, knees bent, shod with bar shoes, large front hoofs, medium mane and tail; a set of old black harness, brass mounted, " F. Y." on rosettes on bridle; and a waggonette, painted black, lined red, containing 3 cushions— W. B. BOYCOTT, alias H. J. ANDREWS and J. JOYBELL, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ginger; dress, dark grey jacket, brown trousers and cap. Appearance of a dealer. Is identical with ARTHUR BELCHER, case No. 9, current issue. Warrant issued. A labourer, native of High Roding. Is a corporal of the 3rd Essex Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Scott, Dunmow. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 16.— Cardiff ( City).— For obtaining money by a forged advance note,— THOMAS MAYNARD, age 40 or 45, height 5 ft. 7 inv complexion fresh, hair dark, moustache light; dress, dark suit, fancy vest, black bowler hat, brown boots. A ship's donkeyman, native of London. Recently served on the oil boat, Joyo Mam. Warrant issued. 17.— Cardiff ( City).— For failing to notify his change of residence— Supervisee PATRICK O'BLEARNEY, alias O'BLARNEY, MURPHY, and YOUNG, Office No. 1275- 08, age 23, height 5 ft. 71 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, slight moustache, " Bridget for ever" and Buffalo Bill right wrist; " Good Luck," woman and flags left • forearm. A ship's carpenter. Native of Dublin. Sentenced at Gloucester Quarter Sessions, 6th January, 1909, to 6 months' hard labour and 1 year supervision for fowl stealing. Liberated 4th inst., 805. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. slight moustache light, eyes grey, impediment in speech, has a habit of jerking his head when in con- versation ; wearing dark clothes and cap. A seaman, native of Bristol. Is a good pianist and fond of singing in public- houses. Well known at Cardiff and Swansea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. 19.— North/ each ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A. J. GALE, age about 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, an inveterate cigarette smoker ; dress, blue serge suit ( trousers tight fitting), hard felt hat, lace boots. A photographer, supposed a native of London. He represented that he was employed by the Racine Photograph Process and Pictorial Postcard Publishing Co., London, but was discharged from that firm on 10th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Northleach. 20.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing ( person) £ 9 5s., 7th inst.— MYER HENRY COHEN, alias HARRY OWEN, age 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., thin face, large nose, hair dark brown, auburn shade, moustache sandy brown, of Jewish extraction; dress, greenish brown tweed suit, light tweed cap, blue tie, gold chain with locket in centre. Has been on several voyages as mess- room steward, cook and steward. Had in his possession a seaman's discharge book. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.— Chinning Sod bury ( County).— For burglary.— HENRY MADDOCK, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, Winchester ( City).— For obtaining Is. 6d. by false pretences, 12th inst.— FRANCIS DUDLEY ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, very thin features, hair brown, slight moustache dark, 2 front teeth missing, knock- kneed, tattooed both arms; dress, blue serge suit, double breasted reefer jacket, green tie, greenish tweed cap. Had in possession a cycle, rather old, front brake missing, new cheap black lamp, " Flyer " stamped on back of saddle, plate on head " Mead Cycle Co., Liverpool." Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Winchester. fc 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 5 on the City Bank, Ltd., London, Queen Victoria Street Branch, 15th ult.— J. HUDSON, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight j build, hair brown, small moustache waxed at ends, j wears pince- nez, fairly well educated, of smart appearance, well dressed. He was employed by the National Boiler and General Insurance Company, London, as a canvasser, until 5th May last, when he was discharged for irregularities, since then he has called upon customers and produced a cheque stating it had been sent him by the firm as wages. The cheques are from a book issued to the firm in 1895. May call at factories, hotels, & c., where machinery is in use. Warrant issued. 23.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For leaving their illegitimate children chargeable to the Parish— LILY BRYANT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair light. A prostitute. Absconded 5th May last. ALICE REEVES, alias TERLIVEN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, addicted to drink. Absconded 19th April last. Warrants issued. 24.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to her recognizances at Quarter Sessions, 26th ult., charged with unlawful wounding— JULIA BURT, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. She travels the south coast, accompanied by her husband, selling flowers or hop picking. May be found at a common lodging- house. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Bromyard ( County).— For stealing at Upper Sapey, a ctark grey suit with black stripes form- ing squares, short cut jacket, open seam at back; a pair of drab colour cord trousers, new; 1 brown mixture jacket and vest, with thin red lines; 1 pair strong boots, hand made, size 8, nailed; 2 caps ( 1 grey mixture, 1 brown do.); 3 or 4 white linen collars, size 15; 2 cotton shirts with blue stripes; 2 pairs dark grey woollen stockings; and 4s. 6d.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light. Has a habit of look- ing to one side or on the ground when spoken to, was wearing the stolen dark grey suit. A tramping labourer, known as Jack. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. HERTFORDSHIRE. 26.— St. Albans ( County).— Fov obtaining money by false pretences— ALBERT SAVILLE age 20, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, long face hair brown, eyes yellow, upper teeth irregular, large scar right side of head, ruptured, apparently of weak intellect; dress, dark jacket suit, grey cap. A native of London. Warrant issued. 27 — St. Albans ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— — BALDOCK, age about 20 height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair; dress, dark jacket suit, heavy nailed boots. A native of London Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reed, St. Albans. KENT. 28.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 12s. 6d., 13th inst., at Bridge— J. L. WICKS ( supposed false), age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in. complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) light auburn' moustache light; dress, dark check jacket suit, soft grey hat. A photographer's canvasser. Had in his possession a book of coupons, which he gives to persons upon payment of Is., stating that by their taking the coupons to a photographer they can have their portraits taken at a reduced rate; also had cards with " J. L. Wicks, Photographic Artist, Chelmsford," thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heard, County Police Office, Canterbury. 29.— Dover ( Borough).— For non- payment of £ 3 14s., maintenance arrears— ARTHUR ADAMS, age 39, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache light brown, eyes ( full) blue, brown mole upper lip, 1st or 2nd right finger deformed, slightly bow- legged, an inveterate snuff taker ; dress, grey lounge jacket, low cut, light fancy vest, dark grey trousers, black bowler hat. A tailor's foreman, native of Stoke- on- Trent. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. 30.— Margate ( Borough),— For stealing, 9th inst., a lady's gold gipsy ring, set 3 rubies and 2 diamonds ; 1 gold engagement ring, hoop pattern, set 3 diamonds; 1 lady's thin gold ring, set 5 turquoise, centre stone more green than others; 1 emerald pendant, heart shape, small drop and silver link chain attached; 1 brilliant pendant, heart shape, small pearl suspended; 1 diamond do., set about 12 tur- quoise in silver, small thin link gold neck chain attached; 1 gold pendant, set about 6 pearls and amethyst centre, small gold link neck chain attached; 1 gold curb bangle connected by a round link, each curb link set pearl and turquoise, gold safety chain, padlock, Kruger Is. and 6d. dipped in gold attached; 1 thin round gold bangle, fastening with a small cross with 3 very small gold balls at one end; 1 black crinoline hat, trimmed emerald green chiffon and 2 black quills across top; and £ 6.— HILDA BOZZONE, age 25, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, small pimples on face, hair brown, speaks English well; dress, black skirt and bodice, green mixture threequarter length coat, and the stolen hat. A native of Italy. Was employed as a general servant. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 18th ult.— JOHN MURPHY ( sup- posed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, thin face, hair ( turning grey) dark, clean shaved, eyes blue ; wearing naval uniform, " H. M. S. Exmouth" on cap. He takes lodgings, borrows money from the occupier on the pretence that he has £ 50 to draw from the Post Office. Warrant issued. TAYLOR, alias ALFRED HECTOE LAWSON, and SCOTT, age 23, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut mark centre of forehead, 2 boil- scars right side of neck, scar right forearm; dress, blue serge suit, white straw hat, brown boots with cloth uppers.
