All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE ^ GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of • police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13 14. 3WS. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by VV IT RTVIVU* The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received riot later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) will be given on application. All copies^ of the POLICE GAZETTE re- transmitted by Police Forces should be prepaid at the ordinary rate for printed matter sent by post within the United Kingdom. A native of Mer- ton. The mare was in the Green Yard, and Norris attended the Police Station*, claimed the animal, which he subsequently sold. Warrant issued. CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For embezzling £ 19 14s. 10d.— ROWLAND SHELTON, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in.„ complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache black, eyes brown, swaggering gait; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, dark red tie, bowler hat. A solicitor's clerk; native of London. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Ottaway, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 9.— Bedford ( Borough). - For stealing ( by trick) v, 29th ult., 2 light grey striped flannel suits, size 4; 1 grey tweed Norfolk jacket, 4 pockets; 1 pair dark grey flannel trousers— — MEECH ( supposed false), age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, bowler hat, carried a small brown bag. He called at an outfitters, presented a card, " John Meech & Co., Shop Fitters, 39, Great Pulteney Street, London, W.," thereon,, stated he was a member of the firm, inquired if any repairs were needed,, gave the name of a hotel where he was staying. A short time after he left the shop a boy called and asked for the above articles to be sent to Meech on approval. He obtained possession of the goods and absconded. BERKSHIRE. 10.— A bingdon ( County) .— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and stealing a gold brooch, about the size of a florin, pearl in centre; 1 pair gold earrings, ball drop pattern; and a Jubilee 2s. piece mounted as a brooch— — JEF- FRIES, alias ARTHUR AUSTIN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, sunburnt, hair dark brown; dress, brown suit and boots, dark capi, gold colour watch chain. Stated he was a harness maker, and had obtained employment in the town. Believed identical with man, Case No. 78, 14th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Abingdon. CHESHIRE. 11.— Birkenhead ( County).— For acts of gross indecency with male persons— GEORGE QUINN, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 in,., hair ( curly in front) and moustache light brown, red blotches on face and neck, eyes brown; wearing dark short jacket, white linen jacket, black cap. A hairdresser; native of Glasgow. Is said to have served 7 years in the Highland Light Infantry. May be found in common lodging houses. Warrant issued. 12 — Birkenhead ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle ( recovered) — ARTHUR HAYES, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, very thick lips, tv. itches his face slightly when speaking, hair ( in- clined to sandy) light, moustache ( scanty) sandy, teeth discoloured, splay feet, Lancashire accent, scar back and dent front of left hand; dress, brown or dark grey jacket suit, new brown mackintosh, chain tab, green cap, box calf boots, square toes, silver watch chain, compass and coin attached. Sutherland, County Hall, Birkenhead. 13.— Liscard ( County).— For embezzling £ 7— JOHN JAMES COTTINGHAM, alias JAMES WILBRAHAM, age 57, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh,, hair ( dark brown) turning grey, eyes blue- grey; dress, black evening suit, white tie, dark grey overcoat, grey suede gloves, black bowler hat, lace boot ® , carried a black stick and a Japanese basket containing a blue serge suit. A native of Bournemouth. Warrant istsued. Information to Supt. McIIale, Liscard. 14.— Macclesfield ( County).— For obtain- ing 2s. lOd. by false pretences, 10th ult.— ALBERT PRINCE, alias TAYLOR/, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 in., oomplexion fresh, round face, hair sandy, eyes grey, scar left middle finger, walks quickly, of smart apjuearance; dress, blue jacket, dark trousers, black felt hat. A traveller; native of Walthainstow. He obtained the above amount for a pound of cocoa, and stated that if he sold 50 pounds it would enable him to obtain a situation with a Tea Company at Liverpool, he gave cards bearing the address of the company to the persons on whom he called. Previously con- victed at Dewsbury, Rochdale, Stratford, and St. Helens. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. being informed that it was left in the name of Grieve, she stated that was the name of her young man, who had apparently left it in his name. Warrant issued. WELLS, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and. eyes dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, grey tweed mixture suit, black hard hat. He calls at auc- tioneers and other offices, informs the clerk left in charge that his employer ordered some boxes of pans, which he was instructed to leave, and the clerk was to pay for same. The pens are found to be practically worthless. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Romford. FLINTSHIRE. 17.—, Holywell ( County).— For housebreaking and stealing 2 jackets ( 1 black; 1 dark serge); and £ 3— WILLIAM FOSTER, age about 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, full round face, hair ( cut short) and eyes brown, flowers tattooed right forearm, slight impediment in speech, carries head forward when walking; dress, brown jersey, dark plaid trousers. A native of Cannonbury. Ac- cording to some letters left behind he appears to have served a term under the Borstal system, and has been advised to report himself to the Probation Officer, Liverpool. IS.— Alder shot (, County). - For stealing from South Camp, 31st ult., a brown leather purse and £ 13— RICHARD JOHNSON, age 19, height. 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, scar front left wrist, tattooed both forearms; wear- ing uniform. An absentee from the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. Id.— Alton [ County).— For stealing ( bailee), 10th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— THOMAS NAYLOR, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey. A native of Kirkdale, Liver- pool. Is a deserter from the 1st Worcestershire Regiment, Bordon Camp; wearing khaki uniform and putties. Information to Supt. Reuben, Alton. KENT. 20.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining a bankers' cheque for the payment of £ 1 14s.„ by false pretences ( worthless cheque)— — MORRIS, age about 55, height about 5 ft. 7 in., oomplexion pale, hair ( partially bald) and drooping moustache grey, stubby beard, large nose, rather long; dress, grey and black thin overcoat, black frock coat, dark striped trousers1, black silk hat, brown kid gloves, carried an umbrella, silver handle, may be wearing a light fancy vest, bound green braid with white pearl buttons. He calls at schools, presents a card, " Morris & Co., Mansion House Chambers, London,, E. C.," thereon, states he is a scholastic agent, and has been com- missioned by a gentleman to obtain a school for his children, terms are agreed upon, then fills in a cheque for the amount due for the first term. The above cheque, No. B/ C 11784, drawn on the London Joint Stock Bank, Ltd., 5 Princes Street, Mansion House, filled in for £ 17 Is. 6d., signed Francis Hutton Then received a cheque for £ 1 14s. as his commission. Believed identical with George S. Treloar, Case No. 36, 28th Augusij, 1908. Warrant issued. 21.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Isle of Thanet Union, 29th April last — CHARLES ADOLF DURST, a German, age 42, height 5 ft. in., com plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, wears pince nez. A tutor. May seek employment at schools. Warrant issued. 22. — Ramsgate ( Borough). — For stealing, 19th ult., a lady's gold keyless watch, open face, white enamel dial, black hands, rather large, crystal glass, engraved back, winding button discoloured, bow of watch black— — BROWN, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, full face ( powdered), hair black; dress, black skirt and jacket, large black hat, wore a gold buckle ring and a fancy ring, set rubies and diamond, left hand, and pearl ear drops. She called at a shop, stated the above watch had been left for repairs^ and on LANCASHIRE. 23.— Liverpool ( City).— For housebreaking, 5th ult.— A MAN, age 43, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, long thin bloated face, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, large boil near nose, right side. A tramping shoemaker; known as Jack. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool NO TTINCHA MS HI RE. 21. — Nottingham ( City). — For obtaining money by false pretences, 8th ult.— Licence- holder JOHN SMITH, alias TAILOR, WILLIAMS, and CUBA WILSON, Office No. 414- 09, age 29, height 6 ft. H in., oomplexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes dark brown, clean shaved), scar bridge of nose, 2 men boxing, crossed hands, heart, Japanese woman with fan, and bust of man left forearm. A native of Huddersfield. Has been convicted of similar offences at Hull, Manchester, Chester, and Cardiff. He obtains sums of money by calling upon persons who have friends abroad, represents that he has ju6t come from the same place, and knows them well, and that he is in temporary need of assistance to obtain his luggage which he lias had to leave at a neighbouring railway station owing to being charged excess fare, which he could not then pay, and promised to refund the same on the following day. Warrant issued. 25.— Nottingham ( City).— For stealing £ 8 from his lodgings, 18th ult.— ERNEST ELLIS, alias EDWARDS, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build,, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, 4 front upper teeth missing, woman's head and bust left forearm; dress, brownish- green mix- ture jacket and trousers with purple and green stripes, fancy dark green vest with small flowers and fancy buttons, green cap, light mauve tie, horseshoe pin, light brown boot's, gold wire ring on left little finger, gold ring, set small red stone on left little finger. A plaite moulder; native of Keighley. Is a reservist of the West Riding Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. OXFORDSHIRE. 26.— Burford ( County).— For larceny, 10th ult.— JOHN WISE, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 11 in., good build, oomplexion fresh, hair and moustache ( inclined to sandy) dark; wearing dark clothes and cap. He travels the country in an open four- wheel conveyance accompanied by his wife, who hawks pegs. Camps on the roadside. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Allmond, Burford. 27 — Oxford ( City).— For stealing, 11th alt., a watch chain ( recovered)— HARRY STAPLES, age about 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in.,, hair dark, clean shaved, 2 fingers and thumb left hand de- ficient, London accent; dressy dark grey clothes and cap ( shabby), light boots. He stayed at a common lodging house and associated with organ grinders, whom he sometimes assisted in the streets. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Oxford. ( nearly new), Eadie 2- speed hub, dropped handle bars, inverted lever back brake, short pull- up front do., dent on top tube, 26 in. wheels, Clincher tyres _ GEORGE QUAIFE,, age 24, height medium, complexion bloated, red face, hair and moustache light, addicted to drink; dress, shabby grey suit, cap, old boats. A baker; native of Hastings. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings. WARWICKSHIRE. 31.— Warwick ( County).— For stealing from hia lodgings, 24th ult., a gold pin, horseshoe pat- tern, with whip; 1 silver pin, heart shape en- graved— — AUSTIN, age 26 to 30, height about 5 ft 7 in., complexion fresh, sunburnt and freckled, hair dark brown; dress, brown striped suit, red and white plaid tie, green cap,, brown boots ( nearly new). Stated lie was a railway clerk, and had been transferred from Charlton. Supposed identi- cal with man, Case No. 78, 14tli ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ravenball, Warwick. WILTSHIRE. 32.— Marlborough ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 1 Is. 3d. by false pretences at Ogbourne St. George, 20th ult.— ALBERT GRACE, alias G. NICKOLLS, ALBERT KING, ENOCH PRICE, and WILLIAM MASON, Office No. S/ S899, age 36„ height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, mole on neck, speaks quickly twitches his eyes; dress, blue serge suit ( vest double breasted), double white rubber collar, plaid bow tie, grey slouch hat. Stated he was buying horses for the Acton and Ealing Fire Brigade, and had several for sale at £ 5 each ( false). He pre- tends to sell the latter, and state ® that before he can get the horses it will be necessary for the buyer to hand him the railway charges, as the Council will not let their horses be sent without such. Has been convicted at Maidstone, Bury St. Edmunds, Maidenhead, Liverpool, Cannock, Shifnal, and London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mackie, Marlborough. WORCES TERSHIRE. 38.— Worcester ( County).— For indecently assaulting a girl, 24th ult., at St. John's — A MAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair dark, short beard and moustache turning grey, eyes appeared inflamed; dress, blue serge jacket, much worn, faded,, black trousers, dark cap and muffler, very old boots. A tramp. Carried a blue enamelled jug strapped to his back under jacket. May be found at Unions or farms. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Worcester. SUSSEX ( East). 28.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th inst., an " Imperial Swift" bicycle, 27 in. frame, black enamelled, blue lines, free wheel, roller brakes, transfer on head and back mud- guard, " Imperial Swift, No. 1913," on top of handle bars, " No. 395673" on seat lug, Swift tyres, nearly new— HENRY TURNER, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, rather long facet, 1 or 2 right upper teeth missing; dress, dark jacket and trousers, light cap, light tan colour boots. Stated he came from Manchester. Warrant issued. 29.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 1, by false pretences, 22nd ult. — GEORGE WATSON, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 8 in., full red face, hair ( turning grey) brown, mous- tache light brown, large red nose; dress, dark blue lounge suit, red sailor knot tie, black hard hat, light gloves. He calls upon persons charitably in- clined, states he has been a local postman but had to leave on account of ill- health, that he had ob- tained a berth as steward on a steamer at South- ampton, and required money to complete his out- fit. Reynolds' chain, Brooks' saddle YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 34. — Rotherham ( County). — For stealing from a shed at Gildingwells, 23rd or 24th ult., a bicycle, " Humber" on transfer, 24 in. frame, 28 in. free wheel, plated rims, Bowden brakes, rat- trap pedals, handle bars, slightly turned up, " Worksop Cycle Co., 78, Bridge Street, Worksop," on trans- fer, black enamelled pump, and bell attached— CHARLES DUNWORTH, age 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) light, eyes blue, end of 2nd finger missing; dress, dark jacket, vest and cap, brown cord trousers, blue neckerchief, hfcavy nailed boots. SHROPSHIRE. 35. — Church Stretton ( County). — Com- mitted for trial at Assizes, 14th inst,, for robbery with violence at Little Stretton, 15th ult.— GEORGE STEVENS, alias SOLOMAN STE- PHENS, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, haii- dark brown, eyes brown, cross inside left forearm; dress., dark suit and cap, blue and white muffler, strong lace boots. Has served in the Army. Previously convicted at Liverpool, Chester, and Wrexham.— CHARLES KELLY, age 19, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, " A. B." inside left forearm; dress, dark suit, red jersey under vest, light cap, light l? co boots. A dock labourer, has worked at Salford and Grimsby. Previously convicted at Liverpool. IA NCA SHIRE. 36.— Manchester ( City). — For obtaining money by false pretences— HENRY LEWIS, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, com- plexion ruddy, thin face, Roman nose, hair sandy, moustache waxed at ends, eyes blue; dress dark suit and cap.— JAMES HARRISON, age'about 22, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in,, slight build, complexion dark, round face, hair dark brown, thick black eyebrows, clean shaved, eyes brown; dress, dark grey suit and cap. They represented themselves as agents for the Equitable House Property Com- pany, Deamagate, Manchester.
