Ail communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose upprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the paym. ent must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. f). Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. ATIOWS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concernini/ delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only: they must be in the usxial form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" hut insertion in the next or any subsequent The charge for such insertion ( if accepted) are only accepted on payment issue cannot be guaranteed, will be given on application. 14. LANARKSHIRE. £ 200 REWARD MURDER. 1-— Glasgow ( City).— Whereas on Monday night, 21st December, 1908, Miss Marion Gilchrist, an elderly lady, was murdered in her house at 15 Queen's Terrace, West Princes Street, Glasgow, by some person or persons unknown. The above reward will be paid by the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow, to any person giving such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the person or persons who committed the crime. Description of a brooch which was stolen from the house on the day the murder was committe 1; a valuable crescent shape gold brooch, set single row of diamonds, large one in centre, graduating towards the points, silver setting. Dutton, Hazel Grove. 12.— Nantwich ( County).— For stealing £ 2 5s. from his lodgings, 16th inst.— HERBERT WILSON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, tattooed back one hand, London accent, of smart appear- ance; dress, dark blue suit, blue yachting cap, shiny peak, blue striped shirt front, dark blue muffler, narrow boots. Stated he was a fitter; native of Preston, also that he had served in the Royal Engineers. Appeared conversant with Post Office work. ( See Case No. 9, 15th inst.) Warrant issued. A labourer; native of Macclesfield. Frequently visits Manchester, Sal- ford, and Old Trafford. Convicted, 9th April, 1906, at Salford Hundred Sessions, as James Davies Poole, for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences ( 2 charges), 1 conviction for larceny and 4 for housebreaking. Is said to be a native of Romford, and prior to October last travelled for the London Daily News as their representative in Hertfordshire, Essex, and suburbs of North London. DENTON, age about 45, height 6 ft., rather round shoulders, complexion pale, hair ( bald on top), thick moustache and eyes dark, well educated; dress, long grey overcoat, breeches, brown leggings, black hard felt hat. A butcher; native of Woburn Sands, Bedfordshire, or Hus- born, Crawley. Sometimes employed as a cattle porter in Smithfield Market. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLA MORGA N SHIRE. 18. — Bridgend ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretence ® , between 12th Dooember, 1908, and 8th inst.— ERNEST ANDERSON DOUGLAS, Office No. 1930- 08, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, scar right fore- finger, addicted to drink; dress, bluish coat and vest, dark grey trousers, overcoat and cap. A groom; native of Leamington. He balked a good deal of farming and buying horses, and that he was a farm bailiff, and pretended to be seeking a situation as such. Sentenced to 3 months hard labour at Leamington for stealing a bicycle; also 3 months hard labour, 15th November, 1907, for obtaining food and lodgings by fraud; 1 month hard labour, 19th May, 1908, at Solihull, for falsely representing himself to be an Inland Revenue Officer; 1 month hard labour, 27th October, 1908, at Bristol Sessions, for obtaining food and lodgings by fraud. Also wanted for attempting to obtain money from the Post Office Savings Bank by false pretences. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Menhinick, Bridgend. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 19.— Cheltenham ( County).— For obtaining a pair of horse clippers by false pretences, 17th ult. — JAMES WRIGHT, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, very sharp features, hair ( turning grey) brown, clean shaved, walks badly, turns his feet outwards, very talkative; dress, blue overcoat, blue coat and vest, grey trousers and cap. Appearance of a groom or coach- man. Has been employed breaking- in colts for farmers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 20. - Gloucester ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, a gold ring, set with diamond ( recovered)— DR. COPLAN, a Russian, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 4 in., good build, complexion fresh, hair ( curly, thin on top) black, clean shaved, slightly bow- legged, bad sight, wearing powerful glasses, sometimes 2 lenses, gold frames; dress, grey tweed knicker suit, black leggings, black over- coat, grey mixture cap, red tie, may be wearing a gold pin, set pearl. Has been recently travelling the country with a party of " Hunger Marchers." Left Cardiff 13tli inst. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. MAY ( supposed false), age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( cut short) and thick moustache black, eyes dark; dress, long black coat, brown speckled trousers, brown tie, felt hat ( high crown,, flat top), lace boots, carried a black glossy hand bag, con- taining patterns of cloth. A sign writer; native of Manchester. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 23.— Treharris ( County).— For stealing £ 150 — REGINALD TAYLOR, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, clean shaved, round featur) es, dent bridge of nose, of smart appearance, addicted to drink, very talkative; dress, blue pilot coat, velvet collar, red fancy vest, blue serge trousers, bowler hat, patent leather boots. Carried a small brown handbag and a new cheap canvas portmanteau. A theatrical manager. He left Leamington Spa, on 11th inst., where he had stayed at a hotel and gave the name of Arthur Burnett, and stated his intention of going to America. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 24.— Todntofden > County).— For embezzling £ 200— JOHN WILFRED ASHWORTH, age 37, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, slightly freckled, probably bloated, hair ( thin in front) dark brown, heavy moustache sandy, eyes grey, carries his head forward and looks on ground when walk- ing, of good address and smart appearance, avoids looking at a person when in conversation; dress, blue serge suit, dark overcoat ( double- breasted), black bowler hat, lace boots. He was employed as rate collector to the Hebden Bridge Urban Dis- trict Council; native of Hebden Bridge. Ab- sconded 3rd inst., may endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. 26.— Bournemouth { County).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 60, on the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Winton Branch, 5th inst.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair sandy, stoops slightly; wearing a grey overcoat, black bowler hat. Hack, Bournemouth. 27 — Winchester ( City)— For stealing 16s. — CHARLES or GEORGE MORT, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes light blue, North Country accent; dress, dark brown suit, brown three- quarter length overcoat, light motor cap, plain white metal badge in front, lace boots He travels the country selling cheap jewellery, watches, & c., and has with him a brown gladstone bag. KENT. 28.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing, about 14th December, 1908, at Whitstable, a large gold Indian pendant, dull gold, enamelled in vivid colours on front, back plain gold with space for photograph; 1 sapphire and diamond bangle, set 3 sapphires and 2 diamonds, flat gold with safety chain ; 1 gold mesh bag, about 4 ins. wide, set 4 large rubies and 3 large diamonds along top; also obtain- ing by false pretences, 18th December, 1908, a mink shaped stole and muff— — HILLYARD, alias GRAY and MILTON, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, full face, large dimple on chin, hair light, eyes blue, of smart appearance; wearing long fawn colour tight- fitting coat, green silk braid, hat trimmed green and blue plaid ribbon, green wings, or a three- quarter length fur coat, round cap to match, sable squirrel toque, large brown plume, black velvet and silk picture hat, feather ruche, large wings at side. She advertised in the Lady's Journal for the goods, and received same on approval. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Head, Canterbury. 29.— Ramsgate ( Borough). Fo • wilful dis- obedience while an apprentice in the Sea Fishing Service, 12th inst.— ALBERT WOOD, age 17, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, horse's head, boat, and sail, 3 marks on sail, right forearm, snake around a piece of wood, " B. M.," and other marks left forearm, star, " B. M." left wrist, sword, crossed flags, and other marks back of left hand; dress, black jacket and trousers, blue guernsey and cap. A fishing apprentice; native of Thornton Heath. Ab- sconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. 30.— Ramsgate { Borough).— For obtaining a banker's cheque and order for the payment of £ 2 10s. by false pretences, 3rd ult.— HOWARD KEMP, alias J. C. BRUCE, J. BRADSHAW, B. LANGTON, and HOWARD, ago 30 to 35, height about 6 ft., complexion pale, prominent cheek bones, broad face, lips protrude, hair ( very bushy) light brown, moustache ginger; usually wears dark clothes, long fawn colour overcoat, hard felt hat, black leggings. A canvasser; believed a native of Birmingham or Walsall. Frequents billiard saloons, usually has letters addressed to a Post Office. He calls at schools, & c., produces an order note purporting to have been signed by the Principal on a previous occasion, for the insertion of an advertisement in the British and Colonial Mercantile Directory and Guide or the United Counties Trade, Directory and Guide, then obtains payment and gives receipts on a printed form. He has been working with Percy Richard Fred- erick Hughes, Case No. 28, 15th inst. ( now in custody), and visited Nottingham, Reading, and the West and South Coasts. Warrant issued. LANARKSHIRE. 31.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing 36 water- proof coats— SAMUEL HENRY SHAW, age about 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, slight moustache light; dress, blue serge suit, cloth hat, of smart appearance. Re- sided till lately in London, after which he was clean shaved and wearing a brown jacket suit, grey cap. A salesman. ( Apprehended, see Case No. 92.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing a hand hag and contents from the s. s. Heroic, 5th inst.— EMIL RISC'H, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in., good build, complexion fair, rather long features, hair and moustache light brown; dress, grey jacket, fancy green vest ( buttons to match), dark striped trousers ( tight fitting), green over- coat. Stated he was a traveller for a Berlin firm. Information to the Chief Constable, Liverpool. 33.— Manchester ( City).— For obtaining furs by false pretences, lst ult.— WILLIAM HANSARD, alias GEORGE DAWSON, age about 40, height 6 ft., . stout build, full round face, hair dark, clean shaved, appearance of a pugilist; dress, navy blue suit and pot hat, some- times wears a long heavy grey overcoat and large soft hat. Supposed a native of Liverpool. For about three weeks he occupied a room and pro- fessed to trade as a produce merchant, under the style of " Hansard & Co.," and obtained, on ap- nroval, from a Liverpool firm, a very fine dark fox fur necklet with white hairs, Kildare pattern, and a muff to match, with a number of heads and tails thereon. On receipt of the goods he ab- sconded, and it is expected he will practise similar frauds elsewhere. Is believed to be accompanied by a Youth. Warrant issued.
