XXV., No. 257I* i. 6. am- All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relutimj to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, ai the case may be. LTTOIVS. 7. A linouncements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an office* of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which muy result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as tn be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing I'ertnns " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or am/ subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. BEDFORDSHIRE. 10.— Bedford { County).— For stealing from his lodgings, a child's money box, shape of a coal scoop, containing 2 gold rings ( 1 set 4 red stones, 3 white do.; 1 set 3 white stones); 1 pair lace boots, pointed toes— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, red face, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, brown suit ( green stripe) and cap, red neckerchief blue spots. He obtained food and lodgings, 10th inst., by representing that he was employed on the telegraphs. Absconded 11th inst., leaving his old boots. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 11.— Walling ford ( County).— For stealing, 11th inst., a free wheel bicycle, enamelled black, 25 in. frame, Brooks' B 90 saddle, inverted lever rim brake, Palmer front tyre, Reece back do.— A MAN, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stoat build, hair and moustache brown ; dress, dark suit and cap. BRECONSHIRE. 13.— Brynmawr ( County).— For embezzling £ 7 SEYMOUR, alias SEIFRESS, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, blotchy face, hail- and moustache dark, right thumb deficient; dress, dark coat, red vest, greyish breeches, black leather leggings, lace boots, pointed toes, brown soft felt hat. A photographer's canvasser. Well known in Cardiff, Bristol, Rhonddu Valley, and Bargoed. Warrant issued. 14.— Brynmawr ( County).—! For stealing greengrocery— WILLIAM JOHN LEWIS, alias EVAXS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, high shoulders, complexion, hair, and mous- tache dark, stoops when walking. Generally em- ployed by fruiterers and fishmongers; a native of Pontlottyn, Glamorgan. Well known in several towns in Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire. WArrant ls » uod. He took lodgings on the 12th inst. Stated he was a chef. Absconded 13th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 17 — AHrincham ( County) — For stealing from his lodgings £ 9 7s.— ARTHUR ERNESi TAYLOR, age 38, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( bald at top and back), eyes hazel, light thumb stiff hist joint ; dress, brown twetd jacket and vest ( jacket sleeves bound light braid), grey trousers, green tie, hard felt hat, light tan boots ( have been blacked). Okell, Altrincham. 18.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult. a small antique mahogany card table, 3 ft. high, 3 ft. square, 4 legs, folds in centre— W. CHAD- WICK, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy; dress, brown jacket and trousers, light fancy coloured vest, brown cap, large peak, brown boots, carried a light crooked handle cane. Is well known to antique dealers in the " Potteries." A native of Newcastle- under- Lyme. ( See Case No. 55, 24th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 19.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., £ 75, at Whaley Bridge— JOHN BOT- TOMLEY, age 26, height 5 ft. 11£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes ( prominent and weak) hazel, wears glasses, weak at knees; dress, black jacket, square cut, dark vest, light grey trousers, dark cap, light lace boots ( new), size 10. A tramping shoemaker; surmosed native of West Derby. Convicted at Manchester for embezzle- ment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McHale, Hazel Grove, Stockport. 20. — Liscard ( County).— For shooting with intent to murder, 29th ult.— WILLIAM WALTER HALL, age about 39, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., beard brown, leans slightly to right side owing to congenital curvature of spine, left leg shorter than right, sole of left boot 3 in. thick, walks lame. Carried a small handbag and stick. ( See Case No. 16, 31st ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Liscard. 21.— fakmere ( County).— For stealing, 7th or 8th inst., at Helsby, a long blue plaid overcoat, brown bone buttons, 2 outside and 2 inside pockets, and £ 2— JAMES BRAMHALL, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean, shaved, eyes '' brown; dress short black jacket, blue vest, brown cord trousers, light can. muffler, blucher boots. Has been employed by a travelling showman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Beeley, Oakmere, near North wich. CUMBERLAND. 22.— Cooker mouth ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst.. from their lodgings at Keswick, £ 7— JOHN WILLIAM COCKBAIN, alias PEEL, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion and hair fair, clean shaved, Cumberland accent; dress, dark suit and cap. supposed new boots. A labourer; native of Keswick— JANE COCKBAIN or STREET, age about 20, height about 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh She is believed to be- long to Yorkshire, and was sent to the Girls' Re- formatory School, Sunderland, from the Thorparch Industrial School, Leeds, on 14th May, 1903, she having been committed by the Justices at Knares- borough on 28th March, 1903, for absconding from her situation whilst on licence from that school. DERBYSHIRE. 23.— Chesterfield ( Borough). - For failing to repoit— Supervisee WILLIAM WOODS, Office No. 1087- 08, age 38 height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar centre of forehead, mole left of chin. A miner; native of Leeds. Sen- tenced at Grantham Borough Sessions, 29th April, 1908, to 3 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for larceny. Liberated 14th ult. 3284. Reported at Chesterfield, 24th ult., stating his intention of pro- ceeding to Sheffield, but ha. not been heard of since To be dealt with where found. DORSETSHIRE. 24. — Wimbome ( County).— For obtaining food to the value of £ 1 10s. by false pretences be- tween llth ult. and lst inst.— THOMAS KIL- LICK, age 60 to 65, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, rather thick moustache ( turning grey) brown, very deep set eyes, large nose, front upper teeth missing; dress, dark brown coat and vest, black and white check trousers, shabby grey motor cap, supposed new boots. A painter; supposed a native of London. In possession of a pair of shabby blue trousers, hammer and paint brushes, which he carries in a very old black bag tied with a piece of rope. Is a fluent speaker, fond of discussing politics, and represents himself to be a Conservative agent and a writer for the People newspaper. May apply at casual wards. Absconded lst inst. ESSEX. 25.— Eppiny ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a bicycle ( recovered)— HENRY WHITE, alias HEN- DERSON, age 22, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, khaki uniform ( supposed R. H. A). A labourer; native of Bishop Stortford. Discharged fiom the Royal Garrison Artillery at Yarmouth, September, 1907. Warraait issued. Information to Supt. Laver, Epping. 26.— Southend- on - Sea ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 27th ult., £ 6; a bag and a quantity of bells— LOUIS FREELAND, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, face long and thin, hair light brown, eyes hazel; dress, brown mixture jacket and trousers, fancy wool vest, straw hat, usually wears South African ribbon, has been in the Army. An ad- vance agent; native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 27.— Stroud ( CovnUy).— For stealing ( bailee), 13th inst., a " Comet" bicycle, black enamel, free wheel, 24 in. frame, plated rims, black centres, 2 rim brakes, rat- trap pedals, steel toe clips, tool bag containing 2 spanners and puncture outfit, cel- luloid pump, " J. Kerswell, Lawrence Hill, Bris- tol," on head, " No. 3009" on frame under saddle, Mackintosh tyres— FRANK PARKER, age about 20, height 5 ft. in., slight build, hair brown, eyes blue, bad upper teeth; dress, dark jacket and trousers, cream colour vest, black bowler hat, size " Billett & Co." inside, violet tie and socks, button boots, also had a light cap. He stayed at Stoke Orchard, near Cheltenham, on night of 13th inst., and endeavoured to dispose of the machine, and left next morning, stating he was going- to Worcester. He is identical with Francis Henry Parker, wanted at Burford, Oxon., for theft of money and clothing from his lodgings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. 28 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th inst., a pair boots; and 13s. 6d.— JAMES PARKER, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, hair light, clean shaved, birds tattooed on chest, crucifix and woman on arms, clasped hands on wrist, star back of hand, small scar on forehead; dress, dark coat, brown trousers ( patched, darned at knees), blue plaid vest, green cap, and stolen boots. A street hawker; native of Birmingham. May be found at Salvation Army shelters or common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. HAMPSHIRE. 29'— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., £ 8 10s. 3d.— WILLIAM JAMES ASH, age 22, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown; dress, blue serge suit, straw hat, green band. A deserter from the 2nd Glou- cester Regiment. In possession of a " Swift" bicycle, " A. Ainsworth, Romford." on tube. 30.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., a light grey tweed suit,'" Anderson, Coney St." on tab ot jacket and trouser buttons — LEON ARD SIMPSON, age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, tattooed bust of woman and peacock left arm, woman in tights light forearm; dress, probably the stolen clothes. C. R." engraved tihereoni; 1 mourning ring, supposed monogram " J. C. R." thereon; 1 gold watch, open face, " J. Ryan, 15, Spring Street, Paddington," engraved inside case; 1 lady's long gold chain, smiall liniks, several trinkets attached; 1 gold bracelet made up small squares, snap fastening, medallion with head of Galatian lady thereon; 1 large art brooch, black enamelled; 1 gold filigree brooch and 1 pair of gold ear drops to match; 1 pair small gold ear- rings, set diamond; 1 lady's handbag, walrus hide, drab colour; 1 lady's gold open face watch, plain back, gold face, monogram " A. J. L." on back, " Henry Shearer, Liverpool, maker," on inside case; 1 gold expanding bracelet resembling a double curb; 1 gold curb bracelet with padlock, attached, green jade book, gold band round with buckle, " A. J. L." engraved on padlock, " W. L. Lane," engraved on book; and 1 lead bullet, set in gold, " Sept. 6th, 1897," engraved thereon— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fair, hair sandy ( long), moustache sandy ( turned up at ends), eyes small and weak, hooked nose, wears glasses, appearance of a German; dress, black morning coat and vest, light drab trousers, straw hat, sunnosed red stripe in band Carried a brief bag about 16 ins. long. HER TFORDSHIRE. 32,— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., from his lodgings at Stevenage, a grey cloth iacket and vest; 1 white striped cotton shirt— FRED MATTHEWS, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair light, clean shaved; dress, dark suit, dark cap, black neckerchief red stripes, light lace boots. He obtained lodgings by stating that he was employed on the G. P. O. telegraphs fixing new wires. Supposed identical with man described in Case No. 14, 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hitchin. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 33 — St. Neots ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., from his lodgings at Yelling, a silver lever watch and chain — FRED MATTHEWS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 to 5 in., stiff build, hair brown, clean shaved, 1 front upper tooth missing; dress, dark grev suit and cap, coloured necker- chief, lace boots, pointed toes, wearing watch and chain with 1 Kruger 2s. piece, 1 coin with eagle one side and man's head the other, and 1 four- pennypiece attached. He obtained food and lodg- ings, 8th inst., by representing himself to be an insurance agent employed by an assurance com- pany of Manchester. Supposed identical with man, Case No. 31, 14th inst. KENT. 34.— Canterbury ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable ti the Blean Union— JOHN REAM, age 47, height. 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, tattooed " T" and indistinct marks left forearm, rings round fingers left hand. A carpenter; native of Whitstable. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heard, Canterbury. 35 — Dover ( Borough).— For stealing £ 14 0s. 2d„ and obtaining about £ 100 by false pretences— PHILIP FELIX JAUJTCEY, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion very pale, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, high cheek bones, turns his left foot in when walking; dress, navy blue or brown suit, and hard hat. An insurance agent ; supposed native of Birmingham. Left Dover, 6th inst., accompanied by a woman, age 23, short, hair ginger, and a child, age 18 months. Warrant issued.
