ICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted tn one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if tliey are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. J. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person resi) onsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. fi. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. .4 remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. L^ IOlffS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an offices of not less rank than Inspector or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paprt only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter 1' 2. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or orn/ subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. Warrant issued. 6.— V Division.— For stealing ( servant) £ 16 2s., 24th ult.— TIM BEW ( supposed false), age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., thick set, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, dimple in chin, large nose, thick lips; dress, brown check jacket, double- breasted vest, grey striped tweed trousers and cap, brown heavy lace boots. A coachman. ( Supposed, identical with Charles Baker, Case No. 10, 26th July, 1907.) Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Reading ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a gun ( recovered)— FREDERICK POVEY, age about 50, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, very red face, high cheek bones, slovenly walk, turns feet outwards. Usually employed as a labourer or jobbing gardener. Ac- companied by his Son, age 9 or 10, one ear partly cut off. He has a mania for borrowing guns, states he has an invitation for a day's shooting, and then pledges or otherwise disposes of them. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Reading. 8.— Wokingham ( County).— For forgery— G. HARRY PHILLIPS, age about 55, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow ( tanned), hair light brown, moustache ginger ( turning grey), eyes blue or grey, carries his head forward, slouching gait, well educated; dress, brown lounge suit, black felt hat, red or red and white tie, all shabby. Is believed to have spent many years abroad. He came to Wargrave about 3i years ago, and has been occasionally employed as a book- keeper and secre tary; was entrusted with cheques to post, which he endorsed and cashed. Warrant issued. Goddard, Wokingham. 9. — Reading ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee), lst ult., a waggonette ( recovered)— HENRY SMITH, age 34^ to 36 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion dark, thin face, hair, moustache and eyes brown, high cheek bones, haggard appearance, bad teeth, ap- peared to have had small pox, walks very badly, stoops; dress, dark brown suit, light stripe, grey cap, square toe boots. A native of London. Ac- companied by a Woman, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, thin face, no upper teeth, hair dark, large scar across throat, usually concealed by a black tie; dress, short black jacket, skirt ( trimmed black braid round bottom), blue motor cap. He hires traps, bicycles, & c., and immediately disposes of same. May be found at salerooms, auction marts, markets, ic. Absconded 3rd ult. Warrant issued. BRECONSHIRE. 10.— Talgarth ( County).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences— WILLIAM BISHOP, alias PHILLIPS, Office No. 3241- 01, age 60, height 5 ft. 10i in., complexion fresh, hair grev, eyes hazel ( cast in left), scar right jaw. Last heard of at Orleton, Herefordshire, 10th ult., when he was dressed in pepper and salt coloured jacket and vest, cord trousers, white soft felt hat, light boots ( all new). Is known as " Schemer." Sentenced at Bridgnorth Borough Sessions, lst January last, to 6 months hard labour for false pretences. Warrant issued. Inflojrmation to the Chief Supt., Brecon. ESSEX. 15.— Brentwood ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Billericay Union— WILLIAM RICHARD ALLDRED, age 32 ( looks much older), height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, rather round face, hair ( thin on top) brown ( turning grey), moustache ginger, eyes hazel, addicted to drink, ship on chest, bust of woman, Ally Sloper on arms, and several other marks; dress, dark tweed suit, black hard felt hat. A bricklayer; native of Coddenham, Suffolk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 16— Grays ( County).— For obtaining money and food by false pretences, at Chadwell St. Mary, 29th May last— CHARLES ASSN, a Swiss, age 27, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, blue check suit. FIFES HIRE. 17.— Cupar ( County).— For embezzling £ 70, between lst ult. and lst inst.— JOHN FORBES, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark; dress, black suit ( waiter's), black hard felt hat, brown boots. Is a Reservist of the Royal Highlanders. He was employed as manager and club master of the Golf House Club, Burntisland. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cupar. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 18.— Bridgend ( County)— For stealing 5s. 3d., 22nd ult., at Llantwit Major— STANLEY FOX, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, long face, hair brown, clean shaved, large nose; dress, light tweed square cut jacket, loose fitting, rather long, and vest, dark striped trousers, blue tie, cap, lace boots, rubber heels. Has been to sea; native of Brentford, London. He worked till 18th ult. at Treorky with a showman, after which he was employed by a van dweller, from whom he committed the larceny, and absocnded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. 19.— Bridgend ( County).— Fur stealing, 23rd ult., £ 10, at Pontycymmer— JOSEPH CHAP- MAN, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved large mouth and nose, Jewish appearance; dress, dark blue serge suit, bow tie, bowler hat, light lace boots. An auctioneer's assistant; native of Lon- don. Ho was convicted at Stalybridge, Cheshire, in December, 1907, and sentenced to 6 months im- prisonment for embezzlement and larceny. ( Iden- tical with Man, Case No. 39, 29th December, 1907.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Menhinnick, Bridgend. " Liberty" Standard tyres, corrugated mudguards, frame enamelled black, rims and usual parts plated, 2 rim brakes plated, raised handle bars, " Ariel " transfer on head and back mudguard, Lucas bell, De Luxe saddle, black ceilluloid pump— WILLIAM CALLAWAY, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, rather full face, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, black jacket, brown cord trousers, black cap ( all greasy). Mayes, Ringwood. 27.— Romsey ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., at Mottisifont, a quantity of paint ( recovered) — TWO MEN ( 1st, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved; dress, brown suit, grey cap, heavy lace boots. 2nd, age 30 to 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair and rather heavy moustache dark; dress, old black suit, dark cap, heavy nailed boots). Both are gipsies, and travel the Southern counties, the former with a dark painted living van, the latter with a two- wheeled cart, with their wives and families. Information to Supt. Hasted, Romsey. 28.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Parish of Ports- mouth, 27th April, 1907— CHARLES LILLEY, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair and moustache brown, may be clean shaved, slouching gait, near- sighted; wearing brown coat, cord trousers. A rag and bone gatherer, may be found in a casual ward Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 29.— Southampton ( Borough). - For steal- ing £ 1— JOHN ALLEN, ape about 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, slight stubby moustache, London accent, slight impediment ; n speech; dress, dark grey flannel suit, grey cap, white canvas shoes ( much worn). A marine en- gineer. Warrant issued. 30.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a cornet, Continental make; 1 silver single case watch, and metal chain; 1 pig ski n purse, containing Is. 7d.— ALFRED SPINK, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, small face, sharp features, hair light, clean shaved; dress, grey jacket, blue serge trousers, green cap, heliotrope tie, black and white cricket belt, snake buckle, lac © boots. Warrant issued. 31.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtain- ing a brown suit, light blue stripe; 2 cricketing shirts; 1 pair lace boots, size 7, rubber heels, by false pretences— PERCY SCOTT, alias WILLIAM HICKFORD, age 28 to 30, height 6 ft., hair brown, clean shaved, 2 left upper teeth missing; dress, brown tweed suit, pea tie. SHROPSHIRE. 32 — Bridgnorth ( County). — For deserting his children in May last, at Iron Bridge— WALTER HARRY STEPIIAN, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair dark, moustache brown, eyes grey, walks badly, turns left foot inwards, addicted to drink, and associates with low- class women. A china potter; native of Jackfield, Salop. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tait, Bridgnorth. SOMERSETSHIRE. 38.— Glastonbury ( County).— For indecent assault on a female— ERNEST BROWN, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion fair, full face, hair ( thin on top) brown, moustache sandy, tattooed both arms; dress, dark suit and cap. A labourer; native of Wookey Wells, Somerset. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sparkes, Glastonbury. STAFFORDSHIRE. Si.— Longton ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) clothing ( recovered)— RICHARD HARDY, age 14 or 15, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh j broad face, hair dark; dress, grey jacket and trousers, scarf, plaid cap, old clogs. A native of Birmingham. May be found selling newspapers, < fcc., in the streets. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oakden, Longton. SUFFOLK ( West). 35.— Hadleigh ( County).— For failing to re- port, and stealing, 4th inst., a lady's " Stanley" bicycle, nearly new, 24 in. frame, inverted lever brakes, Openshaw tyres, Arab saddle, free wheel. Lucas No 10 front carrier—- Licence- holder ALFRED FARRAR, alias WILSON, Office No. 127- 04, age 25, height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark blue, several moles on face, scar over and between each eye- brow, deformed chest. A native of London. Sen- tenced at Ipswich Quarter Sessions, 20th October, 1905, to 3 vears penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 18th ult. f 431. Information to Supt. Watling, Hadleigh. SUSSEX ( East). 36.— Uckfield ( County).— For deserting his wife and children^ GEORGE HEAD, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark brown; dress, black pilot jacket, cord vest, moleskin trousers, wearing straps, dark blue cap. A native of Newhaven. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Criddle, Uckfield. 37. — Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th ult., £ 7 10s.— TWO MEN ( lst, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., small moustache light; dress, supposed grey lounge suit, white straw hat, black band. 2nd, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., clean shaved; dress, blue lounge suit, black hard felt hat). The first man, who stated he was a steward at the Prince of Wales' Club, Man- chester, met the complainant, and asked his assis- tance in finding the firm of Wilson Bros., commission agents, stating that he had been sent from Manchester to transact business with them on a billiard handicap which was being played at Manchester. They subsequently met the second man, who gave the first man £ 1 to place on for him, whereupon he left, returning shortly after- wards, handing over £ 4 as his winnings. Com- plainant was then induced to part with the above sum (£ 7 10s.). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Eastbourne. WARWICKSHIRE. 38- — Longford ( County).— For embezzling £ 54 4s. 2d., at Bedworth, 20th ult.— GEORGE TAYLOR, age 56, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, moustache light; wearing dark clothes. A coal miner; native of Bedworth. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Drakeley, Longford, Coventry. A YRSHIRE. 89.— Ayr ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee JOSEPH SOUTHALL, alias WIL- LIAM REILLY, RILEY, and JAMES WIL- SON, Office No 240- 05, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., oomplexion fresh, hair and eyes dark brown, scar left of mouth, cross, clasped hands, and " IN MEMORY OF MY MOTHER " right forearm. A native of Bilston, Staffs. Sentenced at Cumber- land Quarter Sessions, 9th April, 1907, to 9 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for shopbreak- ing, which expires 24th November, 1908. Liberated 17th ult. from Ayr Prison, on subse- quent term of 6 months hard labour for attempted housebreaking. 2117. Has been convicted at Wolverhampton, Manchester, Stafford, Bristol, Abergavenny, Caerlon, and Carlisle. Information to the Chief Constable, Ayrshire. A YRSHIRE. 40.— Ayr ( County).— For stealing at New Cum- nock, 13th ult., a silver lever watch, No. 20325, silver dial, gold hands, carved cases " Read" stamped inside outer case; 1 silver English lever do., No. 12624, white dial, gold hands; 1 silver verge do., white dial, black chapters and hands, crack on dial from chapters 12 to 6, " 1869" scratched inside of outer case; 1 silver English lever, No. 28955, white dial, black hands, ' H. Had with him a bicycle, a small wicker basket on back carrier. An antique dealer; supposed a native of Chelsea. Warrant issued.
