All communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THB POLICI GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. I. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in. one is » ue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. (. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost jf engraving sketches. I. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of a. i officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 0. 10. 11. 19. 13. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an offictr of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to th » number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. UNDEH the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted as follows t— ( « ) All persons coming within Section 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( b) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, sentenced to not less than one month's im- prisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( e) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, with out option of a. fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens' Act of 1905). But all offenders of the first Division, and such of the second Division as have never been pre- viously convicted, are exempted from this order. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finyer- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or con- victions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT l — Criminal Investigation De- partment m — For endeavouring to procure a charitable contribution by false pretences, 2nd ult. — Licence- holder HENRY LISTER, alias GEORGE TURNER, JAMES FREEMAN, EDWARD MARSH, and THOMAS AUSTIN, Office No. 372- 04, age 68, height 5 ft. 7J in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald) grey, scar bridge of nose, enlarged knuckle joints, left little finger contracted, slight North Country accent. Appear- ance of a mechanic. He sends postal letters to clergymen and other well- known people, purport- ing to be signed by a clergyman in a distant town, stating that a man ( whose name is given) is desirous of returning to that town to take work which has been found him, and the writer has directed the man to call on the person addressed for railway fare. He subsequently impersonates the individual named, and calls with a letter of introduction, and usually succeeds in obtaining money. Warrant issued. 2.— A Division.— For obtaining .£ 1 bv false pretences— HARRY COURTNEY, alias HARRY JORDAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair ( long) light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey ( left defective), long peculiar shape nose, tobacco stains on fingers; dress, brown jacket, vest, knickers, and stockings, light grey overcoat, large dark bow tie, of horsey appearance. A comedian; supposed a native of London. He advertises in theatrical papers, employment for young men and women, from whom he obtains a deposit under an agreement, which he fails to carry out. Warrant issued. 3.- K Division rn For stealing, between 16th November, 1907, and 16th ult., £ 4 14s., monies of the West Ham Guardians— THOMAS JOHN LEWIS, age 50, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark, turning grey, eyes grey, large mark ( shape of a strawberry) back of right shoulder, cut scar right forearm, walks erect, of good address; dress, dark grey overcoat, blue serge suit, blue tie with white spots, black hard felt hat, double gold albert, masonic emblems, attached. Desponding, may commit suicide. A native of Slough. Warrant issued. 4. TDivision. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining 3s. by false pretences, 6th inst.— E. WOOD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, eyes dark; dress, light bolero costume, large hat with white crown, black rim, white fur, trimmed blue or green, wearing spats. Stated she was employed by a Sheffield firm to canvass orders, obtained a deposit of 3s., for which she gave a receipt signed " E. Wood." ( See Case No. 45, 14th ult.) Convicted at Ply- mouth, 15th November, 1907, in name of Annie Hewett. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 9.— Chesham ( County).— For stealing, 4tli inst., a copper copper and lead ( recovered)— ALFRED PUSEY, age 44, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and short beard dark, eyes grey, Maltese cross, " P. & S." right arm, rose and leaves left arm; dress, old dark suit, black hard hat, low shoes. A bricklayer; native of Penn, Bucks. He tramps Buckingham- shire, Hertfordshire, and Berkshire, collecting rags and bones, stays at common lodging houses.— A MAN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair and heavy moustache light brown; drtess, grey or drab colour jacket, Ibrown cord trousers, white muffler, drab colour cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, High Wycombe. CHESHIRE. 10.— Birkenhead ( County). - For stealing a pair of patent leather boots; 1 pair strong boots, heavily nailed; 1 brown jacket— DANIEL OWEN, age 23 to 27, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stiff build, complexion ruddy, hair ( curly) light brown, eyes blue, head inclines to right side; dress, navy blue suit or brown jacket, vest, and overcoat, of horsey appearance. A native of Aston, near Queen's Ferry, Flintshire. ( See Case No. 96, 14th June, 1907.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutherland, Birkenhead. 11 — Macclesfield ( Borough).— For assault on Police— JAKE MELLOR, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., good build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache light; dress, black coat, cord trousers, cap. A fruit hawker; native of Sand- bach.— THOMAS WELCH, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair ( going bald) and eyes brown. A rag gatherer; native of Macclesfield. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Macclesfield. DENBIGHSHIRE. 12-- Abergele ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 16th inst., a gold oval locket, imita- tion rope band; 1 gold pin, swallow with wings spread, mounted with pearls; 1 silver cigarette case, chased both sides; and £ 12 13s.— HARRY NEWMAN ( supposed false), age about 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, oval face, hair light, clean shaved, of good ad- dress; dress, green tinted jacket suit, low ' cut collar, dark bow tie, white rubber collar, light cap with large green check, prominent peak. Stated he represented a Lithographic Company, and was to take sketches for picture postcards, also that he had travelled abroad and belonged to London. He left behind a nearly new " Singer" bicycle, since identified as having been stolen at Llandudno. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones:, Denbigh, or to Inspector Tippett, Abergele. IB.- Ruthin ( County).— For attempted high- way robbery at Llandegla, 2nd inst.— RICHAKD LAMBERT, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, narrow features, hair and moustache dark, may have scratches on face, of military appearance ; dress, dark coat and vest, cord trousers, brown leather leggings, fastens with buttons, bluish muffler, cap. A farm labourer ; supposed a native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Sergt. Jones, Ruthin, or Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Exeter ( City).— For obtaining, by fraud, sewing machine; 2 night shirts; 2 flannel shirts, " Pinder & Tuckwell, Exeter," on tabs; 6 silk handkerchiefs ( different colours); 3 ties; several pairs of cuffs— A MAN, who gave the names of CYRIL F. C. BRODIE and EDWARD J. BROWNING, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, moustache ( small) dark brown; dress, green rainproof coat, Alpine hat, red tie, may be wearing a black bowler hat, respect- able appearance. He obtained a " Pfaff " sewing machine, value £ 3 15s., and tendered a cheque on the Bank of New South Wales, London Branch, No. E J 82754, for £ 5 10s.. drawn by Victor Evrard & Co., in favour of Cyril F. C. Brodie, Esq., and received the balance. He also tendered another tradesman a cheque on the same bank for £ 6, drawn by A. E. Sanders, in favour of Edward J. Browning, Esq., and received the balance in money. In each case he asked for the goods to be sent to the railway station. Also wanted at Salis- bury and Tiverton for similar offences. Warrant issued. DURHAM. 15.— Stockton- on- Tees ( County).— For fraudulent bankruptcy— EDWARD REGINALD ELLIOT, age 45 to 48, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin features, hair black, long thin black moustache ( which he has a habit of stroking), small side whiskers, eyes blue or grey, walks erect with short quick steps, appears to have rather long thin legs, quiet and reserved manner; dress, black coat and vest, light grey trousers. A solicitor. Absconded 22nd October, 1907, supposed to have taken train to Birming- ham, his wife leaving a few days later, her luggage being booked to Birmingham. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Durham, or Supt. Hildreth, Stockton- on- Tees. FIFESHIRE. 16.— Cupar ( County). For embezzling £ 155 19s.— JOSEPH THOMSON, age 37, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, may be clean shaved, stoops slightly when walking, addicted to drink; dress, blue serge suit, dark blue overcoat. A traveller to a seed and grain merchants at Dunfermline, prior to which he was employed by firms at Leith and Glasgow. Ab- sconded 25th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Cupar. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 17.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing 10s., during February, at the Salvation Army Home.— FLORENCE ROWE, alios ANNIE HEWITT, age about 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, long sharp features, scar back of neck, several front upper teeth artificial, slight London accent ; dress, navy blue skirt, short jacket, white silk blouse, black hat trimmed large black feathers. Had with her several dresses and hats. Sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment, 15th November, 1907, at Plymouth, for obtaining money by false pretences. Is identical with E. Wood, Case No. 45, 14th ult. Absconded 28th nit. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United King- dom. 18.— Bristol ( City).— For obtaining £ 2 by worthless cheque, 5th inst. ( in conjunction with Thomas William Beer in custody>.— WILLIAM ARMITAGE, alms A. MAYOR BROWN, age 40 to 44, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather spare build, hair dark brown, moustache ( rather thick) sandy, waxed at ends, of good address ; dress, dark gre> frock coat, dark trousers, silk hat. He left at his lodgings a card " Nurse Lillian ( Mrs. Mavor Brown) fro; n City of London Lying- in Hospital, Registered and Certified Midwife, 5 Baker Street, Weston- super- Mare" thereon. He came to Bristol during February, accompanied by two men ( one a German) and believed to have been touring with a small show called ' The King Edward Bioscope Company," took lodgings, had a quantity of letter paper with heading " Ye olde English Faire and Touring Novelty Exhibi- tion, William Armitage, General Manager, 38 Meadow Street, Weston- super- Mare." He also advertised for a manager or advance agent, requiring applicants to deposit £ 40 as security, at the same time wrote to tradesmen in Bristol and other towns, stating he was about to run a trades exhibition at Worcester, and soliciting their patronage for stalls, & c. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. 19 — Bristol( City).— For gaming ( 8- card trick), in a railway carraige— REUBEN FISHER, age 67 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh ( inclined to ruddy), hair ( curly) black; dress, blue serge suit, black bowler hat. A native of Bristol.— WILLIAM LEWIS, alms TITUS LEWIS, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, hair and moustache dark brown, may now be clean shaved; dress, dark overcoat, kid gloves, black bowler hat. Believed a native of Merthyr Tydfil. They associate with card sharpers, betting men, & c. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Aldershot ( County). — For obtaining £ 3 by a worthless cheque, dflawn on the City Bank, Ltd., Holborn Branch, London, 13th inst. — CHARLES EVERETT, age about 43, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, full round face, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes blue, thick lips, supposed bad front teeth, London accent; dress, navy blue suit, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat. A practical oven builder. Had in his possession a cheque book, issued in 1894, which is now obsolete. H « spoke a good deal of Worthing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 21 .— Gosport ( County). - For leaving then- wives and families chargeable to the Alverstok* Union— JOHN JAMES SMITH, age 37, height 5 ft. 10£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar on forehead, and inside left knee, abscess mark left side of chin. A groom; native of London. Is a pensioner of the 9th Lancers.— HENRY EDWIN SAYERS, age about 42, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown. A groom.— HERBERT HORN, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, cross and " Jesus"' and womau on one forearm, 2 females on other, ring 3rd right finger. A labourer. Is a pensioner of the Royal Garrison Artillery.— HENRY QUAR- TERMAIN, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey at sides) dark brown, eyes hazel, tattooed left forearm, scar left cheek. A native of Westminster. Is a deserter from the Royal Marine Light Infantry. Warrants issued. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by Mr. F. B. Bulmer, Clerk to the Guardians, Alverstoke, for the arrest of either of the above. Information to Supt. A rivetter; native of Sunderland. Warrant issued. 24 — Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing £ 1,250, including 67 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. 10623 to 10644„ dated 20th April, 1907; 85001 to 85050, dated 27th March, 1907 ; 9 £ 10 do., Nos. 86457 to 86465, from a bank, 18th inst. — THREE MEN ( lst, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair and heavy mous tache grey, well spoken; dress, dark grey over- coat, black morning coat, grey trousers, black bowler hat. 2nd, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, occasionally wears pince- nez, of Jewish appearance; wearing dark blue overcoat. 3rd, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., broad shoulders, complexion very fresh, red cheeks, hair dark brown, heavy moustache brown, very talkative, swaggering gait; dress, dark grey Irish frieze overcoat, blue serge suit, cap. He represents himself as a booking clerk, transferred from Bradford, obtains lodgings through advertisements, & c., eventually commits larceny and absconds. MIDLOTHIAN. 1 is — Edinburgh { City). For obtaining £ 8 by a seaman's bogus advance note, and larceny ( lodgings)— FREDERICK EPWORTH, alias HARRY MANSFIELD, GEORGE POVEY, JOHN WILKINSON, LEONARD CRANMER, WILLIAM DENNIS, FREDERICK HUGHES, and CHARLES STENHARD, Office No. 1683- 05 ( Case No. 18, 13th inst.), age 29, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar upper lip, pierced heart and arrow back left hand, clasped hands and shield left wrist, " E" and several indistinct marks left forearm. He calls at business premises and hotels, after bank hours, represents himself to be a ship's officer, and occasionally a naval officer, says he has run short of cash, and secures an advance on a seaman's advance note for wages due, which he endorses, but which eventually proves to be bogus. Wanted for similar frauds in London and Cardiff. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Edinburgh.
