All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, ij sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if thname of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13 Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only: they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons " are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. UNDER the existing arrangements the finger impressions will be taken, and recorded at the Finger Print Department, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard, of all persons convicted M follows: — ( à) All persons coming within Section 5, 7, or 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871. ( á) All persons, at Assizes or Quarter Sessions, lentenced to not less than one month's im- prisonment, without option of a fine, for any of the offences shown below. ( e) All persons, at Petty Sessional, Police, or Stipendary Magistrate's Court, sentenced to more than one month's imprisonment, with out option of a fine, for any of the following offences: — Aliens ( Sec. 3 Aliens Act of 1905). Arson. Ajsaults with intent to rob. Attempted burglary. Attempted larceny. Attempts to break into churches, houses, • hops, warehouses, ( fee. Attempts to obtain goods and money by false pretences. In order to avoid the retention of useless records in the Finger Print Department, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals would be glad if the Chief Constables of Counties, Cities, and Boroughs, will, in future, notify the death of any criminal who has been finger- printed. The notification should contain the full name and aliases, particulars of conviction, or con- victions if possible, also the No. published in the list of Habitual Criminals. Both are horse dealers and of gipsy appear- ance. They advertise horses for sale, usually in the Morning Post, " Apply coachman." The horses are not as represented, and when returned, the money paid for same cannot be recovered. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division.— For stealing ( Eervant) a lady's gold watch, No. 2402; 1 silver watch; 1 long gold snake chain; 1 gold ring, set red stone; 1 silver chain purse; 1 pair gold pince- nez; 1 metal cigar case, " Jack to Jack" thereon; and £ 30— CHARLES VANDRIES, alias DAVIE ANDREWS, age 17, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., good build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, slightly deaf, suffering from venereal disease; dress, dark grey mixture coat and vest, dark striped trousers, dark blue overcoat, - velvet collar, green cap, lace boots. BRECONSHIRE. 7. — Builth ( County).— For shopbreaking, 18th December, and stealing a dark brown coat and vest, " Imperior" stamped inside collar and on buttons, 36 in. chest; 1 grey speckled Scotch tweed coat ( 40 in. chest) and trousers; 1 dark brown coat ( 38 in. chest) and trousers with green stripes; 12 Welsh flannel shirts, fawn colour, striped; 1 light grey flannel shirt-^ J. H. MURPHY, age 29, height 5 ft. 7 A in., hair and eyes brown, anchor, shamrock, dot, " H. R.," woman, and bird on ring left forearm. He belongs to the Lancashire Royal Garrison Artillery Militia.— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark; both wearing some of the stolen cloth- ing. CHESHIRE. 9 — Chester ( City).— For failing to report — Licence- holder STEPHEN SMITH, Office No. 956- 06, age 40, height 5 ft. 9f in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes grey, scar left eyebrow, Union Jack, Stars and Stripes, clasped- hands, star, broad arrow left forearm, scar on thumb and back left hand, hairy chest. A clerk; born in Canada. Sentenced at Chester Assizes, 7th March, 1904, to 3 years and 3 years police super- vision, ooncurrent, for burglary ( 2 charges). DERBYSHIRE. 10. - Renishaw ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, at Eckington, 1st inst. — A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, very large teeth; dress, pepper- and- salt coloured overcoat, grey vest with red spots, dar « ti.- useis, ligai ti uug, Jigh< cap, lar- o boots, carried a packet of blue papers in pocket of overcoat. He calls on small shopkeepers and states he is a Government official, and asks for money, which he states is for the registration of their premises by Board of Trade. If successful in obtaining any money he writes the shopkeeper's name, trade, & c., on one of his bill- heads, obtains his signature, and takes the dtocu- ment away with him, stating that a receipt will be forwarded from the Board of Trade. Warrant issued. 11. — Renishaw ( County*. — For stealing from their lodgings at Cresswell, 27th ult., a lady's 9 ct. gold keeper ring, flat, stock mark " 176" scratched inside; and £ 1 3s. 6d. — THOMAS HEWITT, age 21, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, short sighted, clean shaved; dress, dark blue suit, muffler, grey striped! cap, brown button boots. Native of Dudley, Staffs.— GEORGE DAVIS, age about 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved, scar or lump under jaw; dress, dark coat and vest ( double- breasted), dark striped trousers, striped muffler, light striped cap, light lace boots. Supposed a native of Dudley, Staffs. Colliers or labourers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. v.— Chesterfield ( B, ro gh).- For steal- ing, 27th ult., a pair brown light lace boots, size 8, nearly new; 1 pair brown db., worn; 1 pair lady's black button boots, size 5, part worn; 1 pair girls' boots, size 5, part worn; 1 red table- cloth, shamrock leaf pattern; 1 blue and white striped muffler; 1 light cloth cap— JACK DYSON, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 6 in., rather broad shoulders, complexion sallow, pimples on face, hair dark brown, heart tattooed on back of each hand, clasped hands on one wrist; dress, dark blue suit, brown overcoat ( a " Notts and Derby Regiment" badge in button- hole), the stolen cap and a pair of the stolen boots. Ap- pearance of a labourer; stated he came from Ports- mouth, and had been employed as a cabin- boy. Information to the Chief Constable, Chester- field. came to this city about a fortnight ago and en- gaged furnished apartments, had a brass plate on front gate, " Dr. Mortimer, U. SA., Medical Specialist," thereon, and a number of bills printed in which he represented he was able to cure any disease. He informed intending patients that they suffered from a certain disease and guaranteed to cure them, but refused to commence teatment until his fee ( generally £ 3 or £ 4) was paid. He gave a reciept for the money, " Cure guaranteed or money refunded" written thereon. Their luggage consisted of a large brown canvas trunk, half round top, 2 black boxes ( 1 studded with brass nails, containing medical instruments). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Exeter. 1 i.— Barnstaple Kor stealing ( bailee), 27th ult., a " Trafalgar" bicycle, free wheel, 26 in. frame, enamelled black, yellow lines, 2 roller lever brakes, Clipper tyres, black pump, rubber pedals, flat handle bars, cork handles, " No. 56194" or " 58079" on seat tube.— —. BOND, age about 28, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion ruddy, round face, clean shaved; dress, grey coat and trousers, red vest, green cap. May be found lodging at a restaurant. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Barnstaple. pale, hair dark, bad front teeth, some supposed missing, speaks as if tongue- tied; dress, dark or navy blue suit, dark tie and cap, may be wearing a fawn colour mackintosh with brown velvet collar. A labourer. He stayed at the Church Army Home in March last, and stated he had been employed as oook an H. M. S. King Edward VII., and was in- valided from the Service. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 2.1 — Bristol ( City).— For obtaining £' 3 by false pretence ® , 3rd December — ARTHUR BEVAN, alias ALFRED BEVAN, Offioe No. 902- 07, sep Case No. 23, 17th inst., age 47, height 5 ft. 6J in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eeys blue, clean shaved, scar left ring finger and knuckle of left thumb. A public house broker; native of Birmingham. Sentenced at South London Ses- sions, 15th December, 1905, to 21 months hard labour for obtaining money by worthless cheque. His modus operandi is to watch local papers and seeing a licensed house to let, he calls upon the licensee and states that he has found a customer for the business, thus gaining the licensee's confi- dence, whom he asks to cash a cheque ( he being in possession of a cheque book issued at Farrow's Bank, Cheapside, London, E. C.), stating that he has called1 on behalf of the agent. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. ESSEX. 15.— Brentwood > Co' ntys.— For stealing coal— WILLIAM WHEELER* age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, eyes ( rather sore) brown, walks very erect; dress, dark jacket, blue trousers, dark cap, very shabby. A brickmaker's labourer; native of Halstead. Has been a ser- geant in the Army, was accompanied by his wife, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair brown, eyes ( sore) blue; wearing black clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 16 — SouthmSnsier ( County).— For burg- lary, 31st ult., and1 stealing a long gold hunting horn brooch, diamond fox's head nearly at end of horn, with ruby eyes; 1 opal pin, knot of gold with 2 opals in centre; 1 pair gold links, dumb- bell one side, flat t'ie other ; 1 solid silver sunt wich case, monogram " R. S."; 1 small brass pot, filigree work thereon— TWO MEN ( 1st, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache light, foreign accent; wearing black overcoat and hard hat. 2nd, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and eyes dark, hair and heavy moustache black; wearing black overcoat and hard hat). O." right forearm, flower and leaf left wrist. A labourer; native of Manchester. Sentenced at Taunton Quarter Sessions, 2nd Jan- uary, 1907, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years supervision for housebreaking. Liberated 1st January, 1908. 435. To be dealt with where found. KENT. 2i.— Tonbridge ( County).— For stealing a a new saw ( recovered)— ALBERT WESTGUARD, alias WESTON, age 24, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark, eyes dark brown, nude woman and other marks tattooed right arm, slight scar under left eyebrow; dress, dark blue suit, cap, blue and white spotted wrapper, lace boots. DEVONSHIRE. 13 — Exeter < C'ty)— For stealing £ 2 17s. 2d. — Professor MORTIMER, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., rather stout build, hair ( dyed, brushed into a curl on top) dark, moustache ( dyed) brown, peculiar expression of eyes, red mark on shin about size of a pea, tattooed left forearm; dress, frock coat, silk hat, grey trousers, wearing gold chain, pince- nez, fastened to vest by a safety pin, a gold ring, set 1 diamond, someftimes wears a dark overcoat, carries an umbrella and brown kid gloves. A medical jpecialist of Berkly College, Boston, U. S. A. He GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 1S— Shipping Sodhury ( County) — For deserting his wife— HENRY NORRIS, age 57, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes hazel, A" tattooed on one arm. A navvy; well known by the name of " Dido" on railway and public works. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by the Board of Guardians, Chipping Sodbury, for the arrest of Norris. Information to Supt. Phelps, Chipping Sodbury. 19. — Bristol ( City).— For stealing £ 28 9s. Id , 24th ult.— HENRY LEE, age 17, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, square shoulders, stoops slightly, hair brown, eyes grey, nose turned slightly upwards; dress, dark grey suit, dark green tie, grey cap. A clerk. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 20 - Bristol ( City\— For obtaining £ 1 5s., by false pretences in December last— WALTER COX, alias MILLMAN and MELBOURNE, age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion LANCASHIRE. 26.— St. Helens ( Borough).— For larceny ( trick)— A. CLARKE ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, mous- tache ( slight) ginger, thin face, Lancashire ac- cent; wearing a dark overcoat, hard felt hat, ap- pearance of a commercial traveller. He came to St. Helens, 25th ult., sent a telegram ( code) to Mejssrs Gallaheir, Ltd., tobacco manufacturers, Liverpool, requesting that certain tobacco and cigarettes should be sent to a prominent tobacco- nist in this town. The firm forwarded the goods per L. & N. W. Railway. Shortly after the tobacconist was called to the telephone, and received a message purporting to come from Gallahers, to the effect that the goods had been sent, him in error, and asking that they be sent to St. Helens railway parcels office, addressed " A. Clarke, till called for." The goods were sent to the railway station, and later Clarke called for them and booked to Liverpool. Identical with man, Case No, 31, 13th December, 1907. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 28.— Wokingham ( County).— For BtealiDg £ 9 10s. from his lodgings, 24th ult.— HENRY MOORE, age 53, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey, large ears, small scar near left elbow, pointed rcse. 2nd right finger has been broken; dress, caik' grey suit, green tie, brown cap. A native of Leeds Previously convicted at Folkestone and Worcester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Goddard, Wokingham. CHESHIRE. 29.— Siookfi3rt ( Borough).— For indecency with male persons— CHARLES DENIS MASON COX, age 46, height 5 ft. 9 in., good build, com- plexion fresh, rather sharp features, hair ( very thin, turning grey) brown, clean shaved, eyep ( sunken) blue or grey, lifts feet up well and pushes his knees forward when walking; may be wearing clerical attire or dark overcoat and hard felt hat. A clerk in holy orders; supposed a native of the South of England. May be found at a health resort, accompanied by his wife, or endeavour to leave the country. Last heard of at Gosport, 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Stockport. FORFARSHIRE. MURDER- £ 25 REWARD. 3°-— Dundee ( Citt/\— For murder rd ult., — CHARLES WHITE, alias DOHERTY, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., goad build, complexion fresh, hair light or light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, nose inclined to Roman, bad teeth, branch with 7 leaves left forearm, dot base of left thumb, fullness under both eyes, short neck, ad- dicted to drink. A hair dresser, painter, and decorator; native of Templemore, Londonderry; cress, dark jacket, vest with thin light stripes, dark trousers, too wide and lorfg, dark blue muffler, dark peak cap, light stripe around top, may have with him a dark tweed cap with stripe forming octagon on top, " Keith Scott, Dundee," on inside, size 6f, lace boots with broad toes. He served in the 1st Welsh Regiment from 22nd May, 1901, to 16th April, 1905, when he was discharged at Gravesend as medically unfit; also served in South Africa. He has tramped extensively in England and Scotland. May seek admission to labour home, poorhouse, & c., or employment such as de- livering bills. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Alexander Agnew, Esq., Procurator Fiscal of Forfarshire, Dundee, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of White. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee.
