XXIV., No. 2494. i. 8. • GUI All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THB EDITOR OK THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits cf persons whose apprehension is sought lor serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost tf engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or hii immediate deputy, of t\ e county, city, or borough, as the can may be. 9. 10. 11. 12 13. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically urranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerninj delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Hissing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present " circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers'Listsof all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- atablesare requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. CITY OF LONDON. 2.— For stealing £ 2 15s. 2d.— SIDNEY WAL- TER HARRIS, age 22 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, sunken cheeks, hair dark brown, eyes dark; dress, blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat, brown boots, A solicitor's clerk; native of Tottenham. He was entrusted with the above amount to pay at various Courts of process. On the 6th inst. he wrote a letter from Newark, stating he was walking to Lincoln. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 3 — For stealing ( servant) £ 350 — JOHN ANTON ANDERSON, alias JOHN EHMKE, age 26 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, square shoulders, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, thin features, very erect, speaks good English and German ; dress, dark jacket suit, light stripe, hard felt hat. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. l.— Hlffh Wycombe ( County).— For ob- taining an order for grocery by false pretences, at Great Marlow, 2nd inst. HAINES, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, black costume and black straw hat. She calls upon clergymen and district visitors, and states that her husband is out of employment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Summers, High Wycombe. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 5 — Cambridge ( Borough).— For steal- ing, lltli inst., a white sheet; 1 blanket; 1 patch- work quilt; 1 teapot; 1 kettle— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair and moustache dark; dress, dark suit and cap, neckerchief— and A WOMAN, age about 30, medium build and height, hair ginger, blind one eye, suffering with paralysis. The man makes paper windmills and hats, which he exchanges for rags, bones, & c. The woman sells picture post- cards. Stay at common lodging houses. Absconded 11th inst., driving a costermonger's barrow. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CARDIGANSHIRE. 6.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For steal- ing £ 1 15s. 8d., 1st inst.— FREDERICK THOMPSON, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes ( cast in one) grey, wart or birth mark right side of neck, butterfly, woman's head, and " Louie" tattooed right- forearm; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, black and white large plaid cap, chocolate colour tie. Phillips Roberts, Coed Du, Flintshire," stamped in black thereon, containing 2 12 bore central fire top snap hammerlees, ejector guns, 30 in. steel barrels, numbered on guard, flat of action, and underneath the barrels, close to the breech, on butn sides, numbers " 3o68" and " 38o9," maker, " William Evans ( from Pur- dys), 63 Pall Mall, St. James's, London," numbered " 1 " and " 2 " in gold on top lever, barrels and forepart— A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 u. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; dress, light grey overooat, black bowler hat. The above reward will be paid by A Phillips Roberts, Esq., Coed Du Park, Mold, Flintshire, for the apprehension of the thief or thieves and the recovery of the guns in good order, or in propor- tion to the damage done thereto. DEVONSHIRE. 11 .— Exeter ( City).- Vor stealing from his lodgings, 11th ult., 1 pair of dark mixture trousers and vest, striped lining, fit a man about 5 ft. 6 in., 2 silk mufflers ( 1 black, 1 blue), both with white stripes; 6 turn- down collars, marked " Devon 14 x 2 Cornish & Co., corner of North Street, Exeter," thereon; 6 new white handkerchiefs; 3 narrow green ties; 1 pair lace boots, with toe caps, marked " The Security Boot" on tab, size 7, nearly new; 1 pair new merino pants, lined with flannel; and £ 2 2s. 6d. — Expiree WILLIAM MOODY, alias GEORGE ANTHONY and GEORGE BROWN, Office No. 551- 00, age about 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, heavy moustache, may be wearing whiskers, eyes grey, scar left cheek, 2 scars back of head, mole leftside of neck; dress, supposed blue suit, may be wearing the stolen trousers and vest, bowler hat, had in his possession an old free wheel bicycle, enamelled black, no mud- guards or lamp. Has been oonvicted at Coventry, Warwick, Bristol, Shrews- bury, and Winchester. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Poole { County).— For burglary at Park- stone, 12th inst.— A MAN, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, nose rather prominent and inclined upwards, scar on bridge, arms tattooed; dress, black jacket, dark vest and trousers, paint or grease spots there- on, light cap, black muffler, lace boots. A labourer; native of Ardoyne, Belfast. Sentenced to 3 years penal servitude and • 258 days of a former sentence, at Belfast City ( Assizes, 17th March, 1904, for larceny. Liberated from Maryborough Prison, 2nd November, 1907, on 2nd order of license, which expires 8th January, 1908, Stated he was going to Glasgow. DURHAM. — Bishop Auckland ( County).— For obtaining £ 20 by a forged telegram, 29th ult.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, clean shaved, eyes ( small) dark, lisps slightly, of smart appearance; wearing fawn colour overcoat, black bowler hat, lace boots. He wired from the telegraph office at Middle- brough Railway Station to a firm at Bradford re- questing that £ 20 be sent to him at Bishop Auck- land. He signed the order " J. E. Dove," this being the name of the firm's representative. Information to Supt. Daley, Bishop Auckland. 16.— Gateshead lB"" ngn).— For failing to report— Licence- holder HERBERT JAMES, alias YELDHAM and CHEESEMAN, Office No. 1131- 07, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, mole left side neck; dress, blue suit, dark grey overcoat. A clerk; native of Liverpool. Was believed to be working as a labourer for a contractor about three miles from Ponteland until about three weeks ago. He was later seen to leave Newcastle in the London boat, and stated he was going to London and then to Nottingham. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 3rd April, 1905, to 3 years penal servitude for forgerv and larceny. Licensed 5tli July, 1907. f 174. Warrant issued. FLINTSHIRE. 18.— Mold ( OijUnty).— For being concerned with a man ( in custody) in stealing 21 fowls and 8 ducks— ELLIS HENRY JONES, age about 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( very slight) brown, birth mark ( pear) on side of face near ear; dress, black coat and vest, moleskin trousers, blue muffler, dark cap, and clogs.— ELLIS GARSIDE JONES, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) light brown ; dress, brown coat and vest, blue serge trousers, blue cap, light muffler, and clogs. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 14. — Dumfries ( County). — For stealing ^ entrusted to him to repair), a gold watch, No. 115500, coloured dial, gold hands and chapters; 1 lady's plain 9 ct. gold ring; 1 pair silver earrings; 1 brooch made from a 4s. piece, set in carved silver case, and fixed with a spring; 1 do., black jet; 1 do., silver, carved round edge, enamelled centre, about the size of a 4s. piece; 1 do., silver, oval, Stirling Castle in centre; 1 Chinese coin about the size of a 4s. piece, between 19th October last and 6th inst.— JAMES., PATON or HERON, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, moustache reddish brown, eyes blue, of smart ap- pearance; dress, black coat, dark vest, grey tweed trousers, dark cap, light lace boots. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19.— Cardiff ( City).— For stealing £ 1 Cs.— MICHAEL CONWAY, age 54, height 5 ft. 6f in., complexion sallow, usually wears a beard, but now . clean shaved, scar bridge of nose; dress, dark suit and muffler, peak cap. A labourer, frequents com- mon lodging houses. Warrant issued. 20.— Cardiff ( City)— For stealing, ( servant) a lady's gold watch and chain— LOUIE JAMES or DORIE, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, high forehead, hair light brown, large nose, wide at nostrils, short upper lip, top teeth decayed. A housekeeper or domestic servant. Stated she was a widow. May be accompanied by a man, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, clean shaved; dress, light check plaid suit, bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Cardiff. 21.— Swansea Hnrough).— For stealing ( bailee), 5th September last, a trap and harness— ROHDA FARLEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. or 8 in., slight build, complexion an. d slight mous- tache dark, slightly bow- legged ; dress, dark brown suit, bowler hat.— G. FARLEY, age about 32 height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, mous- tache light; dress, greenish coat and vest, breeches, brown leggings and boots, black bowler hat. They traded as Farley Bros., Butohers. Absconded 23rd ult. Are believed to be using the name of Taylor. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. Derby pattern boots with toe cap. Stated he wae an engineer. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 23.— B r is to / ( City).— For obtaining by false pretences, a set of black leather harness, nearly new, brass fittings, reins stitched half way ; 1 new black oil cloth rug, lined serge; 1 dark over- coat with green and yellow stripes; 1 light grey overcoat with small double green stripe; 2 fancy vests ( 1 with dark ground and green stripes, 1 red and light check pattern); 1 pair lady's shoes, size 5, fastens with 3 straps; 2 pairs children's button boots, size 5 ( 1 pair brown, 1 black)— JOHN YOUNG, alias JOE LEE and JOE BUTT, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in., well built, com- plexion ruddy, hair and small moustache dark; dress, brown suit, small black bowler hat, light yellow boots with wide welts, wore a gold ring and gold colour chain with large com ( supposed £ 2 piece) attached. He represented himself as a horse dealer, and agreed to take a stable at a public house for 12 months. A man giving the name of Joe Lee deposited £ 5 at the United County Bank, Sheffield Moor, Sheffield, on 27th September, and obtained a cheque book, NTos. B125281 to B125310. He was accompanied by a man, age aBout 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., stiff build, hair ( short) dark, clean shaved; dress, dark grey suit, grey cap, muffler, heavy lace boots, wore a wide silver ring. Appearance of a groom. Came to Bristol 29tb ult., and had with them a high black gig, small rails at back, oval nickel lamps, a chestnut horse, about 16 hands, hog mane ; a set of black harness with large nickel plated mounts and bockles, and represented themselves as brush dealers. HAMPSHIRE. 24 — Petersf'eld ( county).— For obtaining 3 horses by a worthless cheque at Petersfield Fair, 7th ult— THOMAS R. SYRES, age 46, height ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache brown, one leg missing, usually walks with crutch and stick; dress, dark jacket suit, green cap. A fishmonger and low horse dealer. SuppoSfed a native of Walworth. ( See Case No. 4, 18th ult.) Warrant issued. ~ o.— Petersfield ( C< un'y).— For obtain- ing £ 1 by a forged letter from the Secretary of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Help Society, purported to be signed by a Wesleyan minister, 5th ult., at Liss— JOHN DYER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., square shoulders, drooping moustache light, very deaf, varicose veins both legs; dress, light suit and cap. Supposed to have served in the Cameron Highlanders. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waters, Petersfield. 26 — Winchester t< > ty).— hr siealing a blue Roumanian stamp, small "£" in corner at back of stamp, value £ 7— HARRY A. BOYLE ( supposed false), age 23, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair light, speaks quietly; dress, grey mixture jacket suit, light cap, lace boots. He replies to advertisements for the sale or ex- change of goods, has letters addressed to a fancy goods shop or newsagent's, obtains goods, and absconds. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Winches- ter. 27.— Southampton ( Borough.)— For ob- taining a motor coat by false pretences— R. MOR- LEY, alias PENN and GUIRAND, supposed an Italian, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion, hair, and moustache ( heavy, curly) dark. Warrant issued. Information to the Acting Chief Constable, Southampton. GL OUCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Bristol ( Citv).— For stealing from his lodgings, 31st ult., 2 silver Geneva watches ( 1 No 12550)— ARTHUR HEMMINGS, age about 32, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair black, clean shaved, out scar on cheek bone near left eye, North Country accent; dress, blue suit, black tie with green flower, green and brown mixture cap, HEREFORDSHIRE. 28.— We& hle v ( County).— For stealing an old black portmanteau, light straps, . containing a blue serge coat and vest, grey trousers, check cap, and a pair of boots, size 9— J. BENNETT, alias BARNETT, age about 42, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, " M. B » " supposed tattooed on one arm; dress, dark clothes, may be wearing some of the stolen clothing. At- tends race meetings. ( See Case No. 18, 4th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. HERTFORDSHIRE. — Hertford ( County).— For obtaining 15s. 9d. by false pretences, 2nd inst.— WILLIAM PHIPPS, alias JOHN GEORGE SMITH, age 53, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, face slightly pock marked, hair and eyes grey; wearing fawn colour overcoat, dark mixture cap, green tie with pin, lace boots, supposed gold ring on right little finger. . R., 737- 92, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, scar ba- ck of right hand, left little finger crooked, 3 moles on back, scar right foot, right eye artificial; dress, dark suit and cap, blue muffler with white spots. A labourer or hammerman ; native of Kilmarnock. He failed to surrender to his " bail, 29th uft. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued.
