I POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY: NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1906 VOL. XXIII., No. 2346 1. All communiculions for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relatimj In them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OK THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons vrhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait and of 6s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superinteudcnt; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. IT XO NS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by un nff< er of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto 8. Announcements of nil persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as fur us practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh< nsion > r recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement. for insertion in the ne. rt issue. 10. In all cases the officer sxjniiKi the request for the insertion of any an " ounee- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to br received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not Inter thai. Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the ]* iper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering tetter 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. LEWIS ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion pale, hair and heavy moustache brown; wearing dark overcoat, black felt hat. He answers advertisements in the Exchange and Mart and other papers. Warrant issued. 8.— Aylosbury ( Cu- mty . - E- c> ped fiom Buckinghamshire Lunatic Asylum, at Stone, 4th inst.— EDWIN GRUBB, age 42 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and beard ( short) dark ( turning grey), scar back of head; dress, dark brown tweed suit, dark cap, red tie, blue worsted stockings, blucher boots, buckle across front, all marked " Bucks County Asylum," or " Bucks C. A." A tramping cabinet maker; supposed a native of Warwickshire. May be found singing in the streets, sleeping out, or at common lodging houses. He was convicted at Bucks Assizes, June, 1904, of stack firing, found to be of unsound mind and ordered to be detained during His Majesty's pleasure. A native of Talybont. He was invalided from the 21st Lancers about 4 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rees, Conway. CHESHIRE. 10 — Liscard ( County).— For wilful murder ( performing an illegal operation, thereby procur- ing abortion)— SARAH JANE MARTIN, alias PHILLIPS, age 56, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair light brown, several front teeth missing. Supposed a native of Liverpool, where she was seen on 10th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Liscard. 11.— Hydo ( Borough).— For housebreaking and stealing a silver watch ( recovered); 1 lady's silver Waltham lever watch, small gold cased guard attached; 1 gun metal watch, out of repair; 1 striped woollen shirt, turned down collar; 1 pair grey trousers; 1 light grey jacket with narrow red and green stripes— RICHARD SMITH, alias HOWARTH ( who pledged the watch, recovered, 1st inst., at Ashton- under- Lyne), age about 60, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers ( closely trimmed) aad bushy eyebrows white; wearing dark clothing and hard felt hat.— A MAN, age about 46, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair dark; wearing black jacket and vest, grey and black mixture cap, blue sateen shirt with white stripes. He produced a letter, on paper, with " Midland Railway Company ( Burton and Ashbv Light Railways), Swadlincote, near Burton- on- Trent," printed headinp, signed " J. Toulmin, Manager, or John Shaw, Assistant Manager," ask- ing for the money to be advanced to the assistant manager, as the bank was closed. Also wanted at Northampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Badger, Woodville, near Burton- on- Trent. DORSETSHIRE. — Poo to ( County).— For deseiting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Poole Union, 30th ult.— EDWARD THOMAS MATTHEWS, age 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown, large cut scar back right hand. A butcher; native of Poole. Has been employed at Godalming, Surrey, and Havant, Hants. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. 15.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For larceny ( lodgings), 14th inst.— WILLIAM SIMMONDS, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, oval face, hair light, clean shaved; dress, blue serge suit, guernsev and cap. A labourer; native of Weymouth. Has been a domestic in the Navy. Probably accompanied by A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair light, prominent nose. May be found at low beer houses or com- mon lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Weymouth. ESSEX. 16.— Colchostor ( County).— Yoc stealing from lodgings, at Marks Tey, between 24th ult. and 6th inst., jewellery ( recovered)— FRANK LESLIE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair ( inclined to curly) light brown; dress, dark grey plaid suit, red tie. Supposed a native of Putney, London. Describes himself as an actor and journalist, writes under the non- de- plume of " Kit Carson " and " Frank Frank."— MAUD LESLIE ( supposed wife of above), age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion dark, hair black, eyes dark, of Jewish appearance; dress, black and white striped blouse, grey skirt, blue felt hat, trimmed white roses both sides. Supposed a native of Bayswater, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester. 17.— Epplng ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a " Centaur Featherweight " cross frame bicycle, upturned handle bars, left side of handle bar badly scratched and dented, felt grips, 2 inverted lever rim brakes, free wheel, black celluloid gear case, wired on tyres, black mudguard, rat trap pedals— JAMES FORREST, age about 23, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., clean shaved; dress, grey suit an^ cap, shoes. Had with him a navv blue suit. A farm labourer; native of Abergele. ( Arrested, see Case No. 87.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Holywell. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Aldershot ( C- mny).— For stealing, 15th inst., £ 98 (£ 53 gold, £ 45 silver, in London and County Bank bags)- RONALD GOODMAN TUFF1N, age 19f, height 5 ft. 5i in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar bridge of nose; dress, dark grey suit, cuffs on sleeves, check cap, red tie, brown shoes. A fitter's assistant. Is a deserter from the 8th Hussars. Had with him a " New Hudson " racing bicycle, No. 59609. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 21.— Alton ( County).— For Ht*> nlinv A bicycle ( recovered)— DAVID ALEXANDER DUNBAR, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue. A native of Wood Green, London. Is an absentee from the 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment; wearing khaki uniform. Absconded from Bordon Camp, 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. A native of Bramnton, Hunts. Absconded 12- th inst. Accompanied by A MAN, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in. For several years she has travelled the country in a van, and attended fairs with swings, roundabouts, & c. Warrant issued. Warrant issued. 26.— Ware ( County).— For et- aling from his lodgings, 16th inst., a canvas waist belt, red and yellow stripes; 1 lady's old silver Geneva watch, chased back, plain dial, glass missing, " C. Street " ' stamped inside case, curb pattern Albert, small stone, Bible, and silver compass attached; 1 plain steel chain, small oval red cardboard box, " Salvation Army Self- Denial" thereon, con- taining 9s. — ROBERT THOMAS HILDITCH, alias MARK DORRINGTON, ALBERT MACKENZIE, ALBERT WATSON, and BERT ALBERT, Office No. 1034- 04, age 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right wrist; dress, dark grey jacket suit and cap, dark tie, light lace boots, a piece of ribbon sewn on breast of waist- coat. A ship's cook; native of Great Warley. Essex. He travels from town to town, calls at Salvation Army meetings, states he is a member, and belongs to the band, obtains lodgings for one night, commits a larceny, and decamns. Sen- tenced at Aylesbury Assizes, 1st February, 1905, to 18 months hard labour for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Ware. KENT. 27.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing a new nlaid terra cotta silk handkerchief, 15th inst., at Heme— JAMES WOOD, alias FRED PHILLIPS and JAMES PHILPOTT, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair and moustache brown, burns on neck and arms, piece out of bottom of left ear. A painter; was discharged for misconduct from the Army Service Corns at Aider- shot. Sentenced at Winchester to 6 months im- prisonment for stealing a bicycle. He took lodg- ing and absconded 15th inst., with the above article. May seek employment on a farm or be found at a casual ward. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jacobs, Canterbury. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 29. £ J Division.— Committel for trial at North London Sessions. 26th inst., for stealing jewellery, described in Case No. 7, 15th inst., recovered— FRED LANDAN, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ruddy, freckled, hair ginger, clean shaved, eyes grey, abscess scar back of neck, one front upper tooth filled with gold, hook nose; dress, light grey jacket and trousers, light fancy vest, dark grey overcoat, light grey soft felt hat. An American. When arrested gave address at Granville Gardens, Shepherd's Bush, stated he arrived from New York 3 weeks ago, for the pur- pose of walking the London hospitals to qualify as a doctor. On the present occasion he went to the Langham Hotel, loitered about the corridors, until a favourable opportunity presented itself to unlock a door ( key having been placed under the mat), forced a trunk and jewel case, stole the above articles, and decamped. Believed previously con- victed in America of a similar offence. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 30. — E Division.— For converting to his own use £ 3,681 14s., entrusted to him as a solicitor— THOMAS MONTAGUE RICHARDS, age 49 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 9 in., stout heavy build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curly) grey, good quantity, rather small drooping mous- tache, may be clean shaved, eyes ( supposed) grey, of cheerful disposition; well dressed. Warrant issued. If found abroad extradition will be applied for. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRIC1 31.— G Division.— For obtaining by false pretences, 7th ult., a motor car— FREDERICK WATSON, alias WILLIAM KEEN, Office No. 1457- 05, age 28, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, 2nx' right finger nail deformed; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A chauffeur and cabman; native of Southport. Had in his possession 6 £ 5 notes 3 Nos. "£ 16820 and 16821 and <$ 40744 ; 5 £ 10 notes, Nos. ^ 24451, £ 76013 ^ 42514, 42515 and 42516 ; 2 £ 20 notes, Nos. ^ 39513 and 41287. all stamped " Manchester and Salford Savings Bank." He was at Gravesend, 22nd ult., where he presented a cheque at a bank. Sentenced at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 18th October, 1904, to 12 months hard labour for larceny ( servant), and stealing £ 120; has also been convicted at South- port, Liverpool, and Bedford. Liberated on re- mission, 3rd September, 1905. 3408. ( See Case No. 5, 15th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. Skelton"; 2 signet rings ( 1 onyx, with Arms, a chevron, between 3 Fleur- De Lis, the other a blood stone, with crest); 1 silver ( 1903) Coronation medal and gold do.; 1 Jubilee ( 1887) silver medal; 1 Jubilee ( 1897) gold medal; and 1 Jubilee ( 1897) silver medal, all struck off at the mint; 1 oblong embossed silver snuff box, figured, about 5A in. by 2 in. by 2 in.; 1 gold snuff box, with crest, arm holding a battle axe; 1 silver gilt snuff box, em bossed, with round ends; 1 old- fashioned long plain silver spoon, with " W.
