Bogus fireman. Obtains money by pretending that he is collect- ing for the local fire brigade or the widows and orphans of firemen. 15. Obtains board and lodgings at the houses of poor people, tells a piteous tale of want and distress, says, at last, he has got employment, borrows money " to obtain tools " and absconds, after stealing any portable article of value. Usually takes jewellery, clothing and money. Frequents racecourses, stealing from the person. Cultivating the acquaintanceship of females, and obtaining their confidence under promise of marriage, he " borrows" their jewellery and money and converts same to his own use.
