All communications for insertion in the POLICB GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. B. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. •. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. i. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to IOJ.^ A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. (. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name_ of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. IONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to thi number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on IT7ednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. Xew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. A native of Chatham. Is a reservist of the Roval West Kent Regiment. Stated he was a telegraph wireman. Warrant issued. 2.— B Division.— For stealing, 13 h inst., a bay gelding, 15 hands, white spot on forehead, back and off fetlock; and a set of brass mounted harness— CHARLES HOBSON, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, thin face, hair and long moustache dark brown; dress, blue serge suit, motor cap. lace boots. A native of Bristol or Norwich. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division. — For stealing £ 28. 7th inst.— HENRY DUKE, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, eyes grey, quiet manner, one left upper tooth decayed, of smart aupearance; dress, green check suit, check cap, may be wearing silk hat and frock coat. A native of Shoreham or Brighton. He was invalided from the 19th Hussars in 1902. A native of Maidstone. 6.— W Division.— For embezzlement — — FREDERICK CHARLES McGREGOR PAYNE, age 19, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eves blue, several cut scars left hand, rising sun and " A." on left arm; dress, brown mixture suit, check cap, lace boots, square toes. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For embezzling £ 2002 — WILLIAM CANN, age 50 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( bald on top) and slight moustache light, eyes ( very protruding) blue, scar left wrist, wears thick glasses: dress, black tweed suit, dark grey overcoat, bowler hat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8 — Leighton Buzzard ( County).— For obtaining 2s. 6d. by false pretences, 10th inst.— A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion and hair ( cut close) dark, beard 2 or 3 days' growth, eyes hazel, swelling left side of chin; dress, light motor coat, old black vest, dark brown cord trousers, light cap. CUMBERLAND. 9. — Carlisle ( County). — For stealing ( bailee), 22nd December, 1905, a " Victoria Special" bicycle, free wheel, black enamelled, 28 in. wheels, Clincher back tyre, rim brakes ( front broken), back mudguard broken about 4 in. from end, rubber pedals, handle bars slightlv rusty, tool bag, pump, and plated lamp attached— WILLIAM RAYSON, alias PERRY, age 35 to 37, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, heavy moustache and eyebrows brown, eyes blue, slightly bow- legged; dress, dark grey suit with green stripes, lace box calf boots. Has been employed as a farm labourer, a sinker, at a colliery, also as a labourer on public works. A native of Aspatria. Is believed to have served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heath— JOHN ARMITAGE, age about 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light, heavy mous- tache light brown, eyes blue, "^ L. Summers" tattooed on left forearm, addicted to drink; dress, light jacket, dark trousers and vest, light striped cap, white neckerchief with red spots. Has served in the Army. Supposed a native of Heckmond- wicke. Faulkner, County Polk Office, Chesterfield. 12,— Langley Mill ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., at Sandiacre, a pony and set of harness ( recovered)— HERBERT TALBOT, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue. A hawker or grinder; native of Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Langlev Mill. 13.— Matlock Bridge ( County).— For ob- taining money by false pretences at Wirksworth, 20th ult.— A MAN, who gave the name of Dr. SOLOMON, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, broad shoulders, complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, may now be clean shaved, walks erect, of good address, plausible manner; dress, dark three- quarter length over- coat, dark trousers, black bowler hat, low crown, flat brim, dark scarf, had with him a pair of gold or brass- rimmed spectacles. A native of Liver- pool. He calls upon persons in country districts, represents himself as an eye specialist, or that he has been sent by a well- known oculist to examine their eyes, afterwards states he will cure them for a fee of 3 or 5 guineas, and if the fee or a part is paid he leaves a pair of spectacles of little value. DORSETSHIRE. 14.— Poole ( County).— For non- appearance to a summons, 9th inst., for disorderly conduct, refusing to quit licensed premises, and assault— GEORGE, alias CHARLES BROWN, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache brown, cut mark left cheek; dress, drab or grey jacket with large pockets, grey trousers, grey motor cap. A native of Stratford- on- Avon. May seek employment as a navvy on public works. Warrant issued. 15 — Poole ( County).— For cruelty to their 4 children ( a girl, age 11, and 3 boys, youngest age 3)— THOMAS KEETS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, broken voice, of dissipated appearance; wearing old clothes and cap.— ELLEN KEETS, age 44, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, nose has been broken, nasal accent; wearing old clothes. They frequent com- mon lodging houses. Were accompanied by their 4 children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. 16.— Shaftesbury ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 2 10s. by false pretences — THOMAS WALLWORK, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin features, hair and moustache dark brown, springing gait, cigarette stains on lips and fingers; dress, blue serge or black jacket suit, round cap with patent leather peak. An electrical engineer, performs conjuring tricks with bronze coins at public houses. May seek employment with an electric tram company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bowles, Shaftesbury. ESSEX. 17.— Braintree ( County).— For embezzling 8s. lid., and stealing ( bailee) a bicycle— JOHN LYON, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, of good address; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, dust overcoat, cap, white cloth leggings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Terry, Braintree. I*.— Brentwood ( County).— For abscond- ing with workhouse clothing from Dunton Farm Colony, Poplar Branch. Workhouse, 23rd inst.— WILLIAM WALTON, age 38, height 5 ft. 5 or • 6 in., complexion dark, face flat and disfigured, ' hair and eyes dark brown, nose has been broken; dress, blue reefer jacket, vest with sleeves, cord trousers, dark cap, heavy lace boots. A chaff- cutter and carman; native of Poplar.— JAMES BELL, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes ( short sighted) blue - dress, dark tweed jacket, cord trousers, dark cap, heavy hob nail boots. A hawker; native of Poplar. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 19.— Grays ( County). — For an indecent assault upon a child, age 9 years— CHARLES ADAMSON, age 61 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8| in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and eyes orev, scar left eyebrow, root of nose, front teeth missing, broad nose ( has been broken); dress, blue jacket, light trousers, black and white check neckerchief, greenish cap, lace boots, cut across toes, short rusty black over- coat. A dock labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. FLINTSHIRE. 20.— Holywell ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 Is. 9d. by a worthless cheque, drawn on the North and South Wales Bank, Kirkdale Branch— EDITH HILYARD, age 21 to 24, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion verv pale, side teeth prominent; wearing dark dress, white motor cap, carried a stick and satchel. Was accompanied by FRANK MIDDLETON. ( See Case No. 38, current issue.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Holywell. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21— Bristol ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder HENRY WINTER, alias THOMAS BROWN and WILLIAMS, Office No. 2995- 99, age 61, height 5 ft. H in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) grey, eyes blue, large mole right side of neck, double rupture. A rivetter; native of Bristol. Sentenced at Stafford Sessions, 28th November, 1899, to 7 years penal servitude and remanet of a former sentence for burglary. Licenced 16th June, 1905, which expires 9th December, 1907. AFLZ 1010. 22— Bristol ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder THOMAS LANE, alias HENRY COPE and JOHN WHITE, Office No. 707- 01 ( ILLUSTKATEP CIRCULAR 70, Figure 17), age 50, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion fresh, hair ( going bald) grey, eyes brown, woman dancing and stag right, horse leaping hurdle left forearm, urn and flowers right wrist, star back left hand. A brick- layer; native of Birmingham. Sentenced at War- wick County Sessions, 20th October, 1903, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licenced 7th inst., and gave his intended address as Bristol, but has not yet reported. Yd 380. To be dealt with where found. 23.— Bristol C7tt- v\— For embezzling and stealing, between 16th January last and 21st ult., £ 113 5s. 7d.— HENRY WALPOLE HARRI- SON, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion pale, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache brown, of good address. A bank clerk. Will probably attempt to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 24— Winchester ( City).— For deserting his wife, 5th November, 1905, whereby she becamc chargeable to the Winchester Union— GEORGE OAKLEY, age 54, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache brown ( turn- ing grey), eyes grey; dressed as a labourer. Usually seeks employment at public works. A native of Ropley, Hants. He served 12 years in the 2nd Hampshire Regiment; has a medal for Afghanistan with 3 clasps. Warrant issued. 25.— Winchester ( City).— For deserting his wife and 7 children, whereby they became chargeable to the Winchester Union— WILLIAM HERBERT BARBER, age 35, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, may be wearing a beard and moustache, eyes blue, ad- dicted to drink. A military tailor's traveller; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Winchester. HER TFORDSHIRE. 26.— Bishop ' s Start ford ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Bishop's Stortford Union— WILLIAM SAVILLE, age 33 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and small moustache light. An agricultural engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Martin, Bishop's Stort- ford. 27.— Hatfield ( Prunty).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 12th inst., a pair lady's brown boots, size 4; 1 pair lace do., size 5, patent toe- caps; 1 pair shoes, size 4 ; 1 pair do., size 5— A WOMAN, whose modus operandi and description is identical with Woman, Case No. 9, 2nd February last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hatfield. KENT. 28.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For non- pay- ment of £ 9 7s., bastardy arrears and costs— EDWARD JOHN CROFT, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, full face, hair and slight moustache light; dressed as a labourer. May seek employment at cement works. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. LANCASHIRE. 29. — Liverpool ( City). — For causing grievous bodily harm, 7th inst.— JOSEPH PATRICK or PATRICK JOSEPH, DOLAN, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, hair light, slight moustache, man and woman tattooed right forearm; dress, black iacket with small white stripes, vest double- breasted, dark grey trousers, blue spotted muffler, light cap, old dark overcoat with velvet collar. A seaman. May seek employ- ment at a cold storage. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 30.— Liverpool ( City).— MAUD M. PRIOR and AMY ROGERS, Case No. 29, 26th January last. Information cancelled. 31.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) 2 bicycles ( one recovered; other a " Triumph," handle bars badly bent and cracked, 30 in. front wheel, 26 in. back wheel, free wheel, plunger brake front, rim brake back wheel, black enamelled)— ARTHUR MACKIE, age about 16, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown; wearing old jacket, knickers, cap, and lace boots. NORFOLK. 32.— Terrington ( County).— For failing to report— Licence- holder CHRISTOPHER CROMP- TON, alias RICHARD THURGOOD, Office No. 3368- 01, age 26, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fresh, hair ( receding from temple) dark brown, eyes grey, dot front left wrist and back left hand. A compositor; native of London. Sentenced at Middlesex Sessions, 22nd February, 1902, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years supervision for housebreaking. Licenced 26th January last. C 182. NOR THA MP TONSHIRE. 33.— Wellingborough ( County). — For bigamy, 16th June, 1902— PETER NOWELL, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache light brown, eyea ( full) blue, bracelet and cross tattooed on orfe wrist, scars back of head, one foot shorter than the other, limps. A chimney sweep; native of Nelson, near Burnley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Alexander, Welling- borough. 34.— Northampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing from the Turkish baths, 14th inst., a steel measure in round nickel- plated case ( works with spring), and pocket diary, " Rushton, Northamp- ton," in gold letters on outside cover— A MAN, who gave the name of DAVID BROTH, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, thin face, high cheek bones, hair ( thick) and moustache black, of Jewish appearance; wearing dark tweed overcoat, raised seams, old grey tweed vest, hard felt hat. LANCASHIRE. \ 3& — Liverpool ( City).— For stealing £ 32 9s. 5d., monies of the Postmaster- General— ROBERT JONES MORRIS, age 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair ( cut short, turning grey over ears), and moustache dark brown, scar on side of nose, teeth discoloured, stoops slightly; dress, dark clothes, hard hat. A postal clerk. Has been employed at race course Post Offices, and may be known to Postal officials in different parts of the country. Is fond of betting. Absconded 14th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. LANCASHIRE. 37— Manchester ( City).— For stealing £ 80 from a hotel, 19th inst.— ERNEST GEORGE SMITH, age 30 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, long face, hair ( thin on top) light, clean shaved, upper teeth artificial, protruding chin; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, grey check overcoat, red tie, grey cap or black felt hat, button boots. A clerk; native of London. May seek employment at hotels, or endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. LANCASHIRE. 38.— Salfortl ( Borough).— For obtaining, bj false pretences, £ 1, monies of H. M. Postmaster- General — FRANK MIDDLETON, alias THOMAS HENDERSON, S. LAWRENCE, FELTON, JOHN JONES, and HY. BROWN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion, hair, moustache ( rather thick and trimmed), and eyes dark, of good address; wearing fawn colour overcoat, dark felt hat, dark bowler, or cap with glazed peak, carries a bag. M." thereon; 1 new soft^ frohted shirt, " Ben Thomas, shirt maker, 125a Lavender Hill, S. W.," thereon; 1 old cotton shirt, " A. He took a room at a good hotel in the town, and went to an outfitter's shop and ordered the articles described above, which amounted to £ 6 Is. 5d., then pre- sented a cheque for £ 10 10s. on Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease, Spence it. The man ( sometimes accompanied by the woman, who represents herself as his wife) calls on Ministers of Religion, or persons connected with the Army, represents himself as an ex- sergeant of the " Q " Battery R. H. Artillery, sneaks of engagements in South Africa, and of his having won the Victoria Cross. The woman calls on persons and represents that her husband has been taken suddenly ill, and that she has been left practically destitute, and asks for money to be repaid when her husband receives his Army pension.
