POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1906. VOL. XXIII., No. 2320. B a TJX. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to TUB EDITOR or TBE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONUON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if Sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of noI less rank than Superintendent; atid if the name n1 such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LT I O ST S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, an- d as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit tu the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result front Such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not Inter than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must l> e in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in udcnnee, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by I'ostal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Missing Persons" are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the ne. ct or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that eflEect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will'be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The satne course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. CORNWALL. 10. — Liskeard (< '" uniy i. — For obtaining £ 12 10s., by false pretences, at Saltash— FRANK MIDDLETON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair and eyes dark, moustache dark brown; wear- ing long dark brown ribbed cloth overcoat, dark blue cap with glaced peak, dark tie. He repre- sented himself as a silversmith, produced passes authorising him to trade at barracks. On 1st ult. he called at a bank and asked to be allowed to open an account, on 2nd ult. he paid a cheque for £ 20 to his credit, drawn by Lee Middleton & Co.; on 3rd ult. he paid in a cheque for £ 19 10s., drawn by Lee Middleton k Co., on the Devon and Cornwall Bank, Stonehouse; made out a cheque for £ 12 10s., and received the amount. The cheques have sinced been returned, marked " No funds." ( Is identical with S. Lawrence Case No. 13, 31st March, 1899.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Liskeard. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Renishaw i County).— For stealing, 9' h insfc., at Clown, a pair of dark brown cord trousers; 1 dark cap with small white stripe, sizo 7; 1 black and white check neckerchief; and £ 1 6s. 9d.— WALTER TRAIN, alias TRAYOR, age 27, height 5 ft. 10£ in., slight build, complexion dark, lone thin face, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes dark, black prominent eyebrows, supposed tattooed right forearm and wrist; dress, black serge, jacket, and ( double- breasted) vest, dark brown cord trousers, dark cap, black and white neckerchief. DURHAM. 13 — Stockton - on - Tees ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 by a worthless cheque, 1st inst. — W. MARSTON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., rather stout build, complexion swarthy, hair and drooping moustache black, prominent cut scar on forehead, rolling gait, appearance of a seaman; dress, navy blue suit, black overcoat, black felt hat, wore a silver Albert, a plain gold ring, and a jewelled ring on right little finger. A native of Merthyr Tydfil. He takes lodgings at hotels and represents that he is waiting for his brother who is bringing a motor car from Cardiff. Had in his possession a cheque book on the Merthyr Tydfil Branch of the Metropolitan Bank of England and Wales. Is believed to have committed similar frauds at Exeter and Ipswich, and used the names of William Humphries and E. Hyman, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hildreth, Stockton- on- Tees. ESSEX. LL— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing during a football match at Brentwood Grammar School, 21st inst., a small gold safety pin; 1 £ 2 piece, dated " 1887 "; and £ 9 10s.— A MAN, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache light; dress, dark suit, grey cap. He was seen in the dressing room of above school and represented that he was a player and had arrived late. 15.— Brentwood ( County\— For abscond- ino- from Poplar Dunton Farm Colony, and taking clothing and boots, the property of the Poplar Board of Guardians, 18th ' inst.— ALBERT CHRISTMAS, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light brown, eyes brown; dress, black reefer jacket, vest with sleeves, cord trousers, cap. hob nailed boots. A labourer; native of Bow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. GLOUCESTERSHIRE . 16.— Gloucester ( bounty).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)-- F. BRIGG, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. C or 7 in., hair brown, eyes blue, of good address; dress, dark coat and vest, dark trousers with light stripes, blue tie, black bowler hat. He disposed of the machine at Banbury. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. 17.— Bristol ( City).— For embezzling 15s. 3rd inst.— ANTONIO IAFANO, an Italian, age 19 to 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes dark; dress, dark coat and vest, striped brown trousers, yellow neckerchief, brown cap, of shabby appear- ance. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Aldershot (< ounty).— For deserting their wives and families, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Farnliam Union— HOWARD NORTHCOTE, age 45, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 in., hair, moustache, and eyes dark; dress, navy blue jacket suit, dark grey cap, lace boots. A groom. Absconded in September last.— GEORGE WATTS, age 35, height 5 ft, 7| in., complexion fresh, hair light ( turning grey), mous- tache auburn, eyes dark grey, right thumb crooked, rings on 3rd and 4th left fingers; dress, navy blue coat and vest, light cord trousers, lace boots. A bricklayer. Absconded in November, 1905. — WILLIAM HOWARD RUSSELL SPRY, alias EUSTACE and ROY, age 45 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue. A pianist and banjoist. May be found with travelling theatricals or music- hall artists, as a banjoist in name of Roy. Warrants issued. Information to Supt. LEWIS, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( rather long) and slight mous- tache dark, eyes brown, thick lips, tobacco stains on fingers, of nervous disposition; dress, dark grey overcoat, blue trousers, black bowler hat, brown boots, may be wearing blue serge or light plaid suit. An agent. Warrant issued. 21.— Southampton ( Borough).— For ob- taining credit by fraud— DAVID WALKER PEARSON, age 62, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and beard grey. HEREFORDSHIRE. 22.— Ledbury ( County).—^ or stealing, 6th ult., 6 pigs ( recovered)— HENRY HOLTHAM, alias WEBLEY, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, bloated face, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, addicted to drink, of rough ap- pearance; dress, brown grey clothing, black hard hat, lace boots. A drover; native of Ledbury. Has served in the Army. May seek employment with auctioneers or dealers. ( See Case No. 22, 16th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. KENT. 2' 6.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., at New Roniney, a " Swift" bicycle, 25 in. frame, raised handle bars, geared to 68, rubber pedals, free wheel, rim brakes, Warwick tyres, enamelled black— THOMAS BRAVERY, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, Buffalo Bill left arm, 2 hearts, head, & c., right arm, slightly flat feet. Is a private of the 1st Battalion East Kent Regiment, wearing uniform. Supposed a native of Kingston- on- Thames. Warrant issued. 2i.— Ashlord ( County^.— For stealing. 12th inst., at Lydd, £ 3— J. Information to Supt, Sargent, Chatham. 26 — Faversham ( County).— For deserting his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Faversham Union— WILLIAM TONG, age about 30, height 5 ft, 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and mous- tache light brown, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket suit and cap. A native of Boughton- under- Blean, Kent. May seek employment as a carman. He was a member of the Salvation Army. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27 — Lindsey ( County).— Frr stealing £ 8 7th inst.— CHARLES MERRY, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 to 4 in., slight build, hair ( turning grey) brown, clean shaved, 4 front upper teeth defiicent, whip, cap, and spur tattooed on one arm, saddle, bridle, and stirrup believed on other, walks quickly, speaks with South Country accent; dress, grey " jacket and vest, cord breeches, dark muffler, large cap, brown leather leggings, shooting boots. A tramping groom or stableman. He booked from Market Rasen to Liecester on 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Eggleston, Lindsey. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 28.— Risca ( County).— For stealing £ 1 — EVAN RICHARD FOTHERGIL ROWLANDS, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, 2 upper teeth missing, addicted to drink, of smart appearance; dress, black coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black bowler hat, light lace boots. A draper's assistant; native of Aberystwyth. Lately employed as a furniture dealer's canvasser and collector. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Porter, Risca. NORFOLK. 29.— Walsingham ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, at Fakenham, 9th ult., a pair dark trousers with light stripe; 1 double- breasted dark grey mixture vest, buttons covered with black twist; 1 cigar holder; 1 briar pipe— ALFRED GARDNER, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustach- 3 light, eyes supposed grey high cheek bones, large nose; dress, 2 jackets ( 1 navy blue, 1 dark grey), dark cap, light blue tie, and the stolen vest and trousers. A native of New England, Peterborough. He represented himself as an Insurance Agent, and stated that he had been removed from one district to another on short notice, has been employed as a railway engine cleaner. Harvey, Walsingham. 30 — Norwich ( City\— For obtai- ing goods by false pretences— LILY WALKER, alias WELCH, NURSE WALKER, & c„ age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, hair light brown, sometimes wears gold rimmed spectacles; dressed as a nurse, white gloves. Is accompanied bv her HUSBAND, aee 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, moustache dark; and A BOY, age about 3 years; dress, grey suit and overcoat with small cape. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. ol.— Kettering ( County) — For embezzling £ 2 3s. 9d.— ALFRED JOHN EVERITT, age 45 to 50, height 6 ft. 1 or 2 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, high forehead, wears glasses; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, dark cap, lace boots. May seek employment as an Insurance agent or canvasser. Has been similarly employed at Shrewsbury, Hereford, Loughborough, Coal- ville, Leicester, and Nottingham. A native of Kettering. PEMBROKESHIRE. 32.- Haverfordwest Castle ( County). - For obtaining food and lodgings, 12th inst., and 5s., on 15th inst., by false pretences, at Pem- broke Dock— CHARLES PERKINS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, bust of woman supposed on left forearm, cross flags supposed on right forearm ; dress, dark jacket suit, pepper and salt colour overcoat, yellow leggings, black bowler hat, lace boots. ( See Case No. 96, current issue.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Haverford- west Castle. SHROPSHIRE. 33.— Bridgnorth ( County).— For attempted sodomy, also for larcenv. at Westwood, 7th inst. — BENJAMIN PALMER, age about 40, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, eyes grey, addicted to drink; dress, plaid jacket and vest, drab cord breeches and leggings, or cord trousers and cloth leggings, grey cap, turned up at back. A native of Cleo- bury Mortimer. He seeks employment at farms. May be found at public houses in outlying districts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1906. METROPOLITAN 31.- Criminal Investigation De- partment, — Special attention in calle I t' Licence- holder PETER GARDNER, alias PAUL GORMAN, GRAHAM, BRADY, JOE DAVIS, and KANE, Office No. 822- 05 ( who was sentenced, 27th ult, to forfeit his licence for failing to report), age 39, height 5 ft. in, slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shaved, abscess scar under left jaw, speaks with Irish- American accent, of smart appearance. POLICE DISTRICT. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 25th July, 1901, to 5 years penal servitude for jeweller's shopbreak- ing ( after previous convictions at Durham, Derby, and elsewhere). Licenced 18th May, 1905. Skele- ton keys and modelling wax ( for taking impression of keys) were found in his possession, 26th ult. He uses nitro- glycerine for safe breaking, and may be wanted for that or other offences. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 35.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— Remanded at Bow Street Police Court, till 27th inst., charged with obtaining £ 15 15s, by fraud— REGINALD HARCOURT, alias GEORGE HOWELL, age 32, height 5 ft. 9£ in, complexion fresh, hair and pointed moustache dark; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, light check fancy vest with brass buttons, black over- coat with silk facings, tweed cap.
