POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1906. VOL. XXIII., No. 2308. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be tlitreby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be mode in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. . . The Space being limited, announcements concerning " Misstng Persona are only accepted on payment, but insertion in the next or any subsequent issue cannot be guaranteed. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITA N POLICE DIS TRIG T 1.— L Division.— For embezzling, 23rd ult., £ 1 3s. 7| d.— Expiree ALBERT BROOKS, Office No. 2210- 01, age 28, height 5 ft. 3J in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue; blue dot back left wrist, scars back left thumb and on 1st left finger; dress, light mixture suit, check cap. A baker; native of Blackwater, Hants. Sentenced at Hants Assizes, 18th November, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude for carnal knowledge. 2.— RDivision.— EDWARD CONNOLLY, Case No. 97, 19th ult., is identical with Edward Patrick Connolly, who was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Liverpool Assizes, 27th July, 1903, for fraud. Formerly carried on business as a wine and spirit merchant at Southport, and is said to have had a tobacconists' business at Wolverhampton. 3.— T Division.— For stealing, 3rd inst., a diamond marquise ring, old silver setting; 1 lady's do., set 3 turquoise and 3 diamonds; 1 lady's half do., set 5 sapphires, Indian setting; 1 lady's do., set 5 pearls; 1 do., set square cut emerald, sur- rounded by diamonds; 1 Spanish gold coin brooch, dated 1803; 3 ladies' hair brushes, silver backs, chased; 1 do., clothes brush; 1 lady's silver belt, composed of William IV. rupees, dated 1835; 1 black leather purse, silver mounts; 1 cheque on Natal Bank, St. Swithin's Lane Branch, signed H. T. Peach; 1 lady's gunmetal watch; 1 small gold chain; 1 small travelling clock in red morocco case, " Made in France" on back; 1 small silver box, Indian, lid shape of heart — LUDWIG WOLFE, a German, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue, quick movements; dress, black jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Has been employed as hotel waiter at Teignmouth, Devonshire. Absconded 3rd inst. 4.— X Division-— For stealing £ 13 4s. Jd. — WILLIAM ALDWORTH, age 16, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair ( brushed up in front) and eyes ( rather large and crossed) brown, abrasion left cheek, finger nails bitten short, turns feet inwards, takes short steps; dress, dark jacket and vest, striped trousers, brown cap, lace boots. An errand boy ; native of Chiswick. He was sent with above amount to a bank and absconded. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BRECONSHIRE. 5.— Ystradgynlais { County).— For steal- ing ( bailee), 12th ult., a brown cloth overcoat, bone buttons of similar colour, pockets at sides; 1 leather purse containing 7 halfpennies and a farth- ing — HAROLD PHILLIPS, age 18 to 20, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight biuld, com- plexion fair, hair red; dress, navy blue suit, dark red striped muffler, brown cap with flaps, old light lace boots. A colliery labourer; native of Haverfordwest. Absconded 12th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Flye, Brecon, or to Ser- geant Jarrett, Ystradgynlais. CA MB RIDGES HI RE. 6.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing a brown mackintosh, 7th inst.— A MAN, who gave the name of ARTHUR ERNEST DAVIS, age 19 to 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, bad teeth : dress, dark jacket suit, brown leggings and boots, small tie, black hard felt hat, sometimes wears a cap. A stock- broker's clerk. He calls on dentists and makes an appointment for the next day, after he has left it is found that articles are missing. He pledged a light overcoat with velvet collar, 8th inst., in name of Davies. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. CA RNA R VONSHIRE. 7.— Bangor ( County).— For stealing a postal letter, containing a money order—- MORGAN WILLIAM HUMPHREYS, alias MORGAN MORGAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., rather strong build, complexion light, marks of King's evil on neck, slightly bow- legged;. wearing dark jacket and vest, dark grey cap with black stripes, scarf. A labourer; native of Llanberis. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Harris, Bangor. DERBYSHIRE. 8 — Chesterfield ( Borough).— For leav- ing their wives and children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Chesterfield Union, 12th ult. and 1st August, 1904, respectively— FREDERICK SMITH, alias EDWIN MCCARTHY, age 40, height 5 ft. 4i in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark" eyes grey, woman tattooed left arm. A tailor; native of Macclesfield.— JOHN MONAGHAN, age 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion and slight moustache dark, hair dark brown. A collier; native of Denaby, Yorkshire. A French polisher, has been employed in London and at Gloucester, Aberdare, and other towns. Absconded about 2i years ago. May be found in low public houses or common lodg- ing houses. DORSETSHIRE. 10.— Poole ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a watch ( recovered)— JOHN RITCHIE, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair and moustache dark brown; wearing dark clothes, medal ribbons on vest, bLack hard felt hat, earned a small square bag. Repairs watches and hawks cheap jewellery. Had in his possession a Pedlar's Certificate, issued at Dorset in December, 1905. Frequents common lodging houses and beer houses. Is accompanied by his Son, age 9. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. ESSEX. 11.— Chelmsford ( County).— For obtain- ing, by false pretences, 24th ult., 3 pairs ladies' black glace button boots ( 1 pair straight toe caps, size 5, price 17s. 6d.; 1 do., straight patent toe caps, size 5, price 15s. 6d.; 1 do. straight toe caps, size 4, price 12s. 6d.), all with pointed toes, prices marked in pencil on each right boot— A WOMAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion very pale, hair and eyes dark; dress, black dress, black three- quarter length jacket, black sailor hat. Appearance of a domestic servant. She calls on tradesmen, usually boot and shoe salesmen, repre- sents she is in service at a hotel or public house, and that her mistress has sent her for 2 or 3 pairs of boots for selection. Is wanted at Grays and Rochester for similar offences. ( See Case No. 98.) Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 12.— Colchester ( Borough}.— For obtain ing £ 1 by false pretences— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, slight mous- tache dark, speaks with foreign accent; wearing long dark overcoat, black strap leggings. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Colchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 1 X.— Merthyr Tydfil ( County).— Foriorg- ing a deed, 25th January, 1904— WILLIAM SHIPTON, age 30 to 33, height about 6 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, full round features, hair ( curly) dark, short thick neck, small feet; wears a frock coat and silk hat. A solicitor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Townsend, Merthyr Tydfil. 14.— Swansea ( Borough.).— For embezzle- ment— WILLIAM ALLEN, age about 19, height about 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion fair, London accent; dress, dark overcoat, dark suit, A porter; supposed a native of London. In a pocket book, left at his lodgings, was written " 1897, Wm. Allen, 115 Harbut Road, Plough Road, Battersea, London, 1898, 1903, Wm. Allen, Orphan Home, Hatwels Road, Clifton, Bristol, 1903, 1904, Wm. Allen, Haver Hill, Trefgarn, Pembrokeshire." May seek employment at farms. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE . 15.— Gloucester ( County).— For failing to appear at Gloucester City Quarter Sessions, 30th ult., on two charges of stealing ( bailee) bicycles — HENRY CHARLES DRIVER, age 21 ( looks about 30), height 5 ft. 11 in., stoops slightly, complexion sallow, hair and mous- tache dark, eyes brown, 3rd right finger deformed; dress, dark suit with pin stripe running through, fawn colour mackintosh over- coat, brown cap, brown boots. A native of BisJey, near Stroud. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Har- rison, Gloucester. 16.— Staple Hill ( County).— Escaped from Brentry Inebriates' Home, 11th ult.— DANIEL K1RBY, age 44, height 5 ft. 3^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, " D. K." and haif moon right arm, star and dot left arm ; dress, dark tweed coat and cap, " Royal Victoria Home, Brentry," on buttons, vest with sleeves, cord trousers. Supposed a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 17— Winchester ( City).— For stealing £ 8 10s.— ARTHUR BERNER, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and slight mous- tache light, inclined to sandy, eyes grey; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark tweed vest and trousers, grey cap, old brown boots, blacked over. A native of Winchester. Frequents common lodg- ing houses, associates with costermongers and hawkers. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Winchester. 18.— Portsmouth ' BoroughV— For forging and uttering cheques drawn on the London and South Western Bank, Cricklewood Branch— HILDA REYNOLDS, alias CIIIVERAL, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown; dress, dark grey three- quarter length coat, black skirt, black hat trimmed black tips and violets, brown fur. She calls upon drapers, stationers, & c., makes a small purchase, tenders a cheque in payment, and receives the balance. Is identical with H. STACEY, Case No. 1, 12th ult. Accompanied by A MAN ( alleged to be her hus- band), age about 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., well built, complexion fair, clean shaved; dress, tweed suit, hard felt hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 19.— Southampton ( Bormigh).— for steal- ing a horse ( recovered) — GEORGE YEOMAN, alias WILLIAM JOHNSON, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark ( turn- ing grey), scar on bridge of nose and chin, nose pock marked, walks badly; wearing a new beaver overcoat, black Italian cloth lining. Is believed ' o to have been a butcher. Warrant issued. 20-— Southampton ( Borniinh).—" For steal- ing jewellery and 2 £ 5 notes— ANGELO DEL- SANTO, an" Italian, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion, moustache, and eyes dark, hair black; wearing a grey overcoat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southamp- ton. HER 1 FORDS HIRE. 21 — St. Albans ( City).- - For obtaining, by false pretences, 19th ult., 4 pairs women's boots ( 2 glace kid, button, pointed toe caps, sizes 4 and 5; 1 do., patent straight toe cap, size 4; 1 pair do. lace, patent pointed toe cap, size 4); 1 pair glace kid lace shoes, " Louis " heels, size 4, all marked " The Scotia " on soles— A WOMAN, age 18 to 20, rather short, complexion pale; wearing black jacket, blue straw hat, trimmed blue ribbon. She stated she had been sent for the boots. ( See Case No. 98.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, St. Albans. ISLE OF ELY. 22.— March ( County).— For obtaining cloth- ing by false pretences, between 19th December, 1905, and 6th ult.— HENRY BROWN, alias H. A. PRYCE BROWN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., short neck, rather stiff build, com- plexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light; dress, black reefer jacket, fancy red vest with small black spots, dark trousers with light stripe and slight red check, fawn colour Chesterfield overcoat, single- breasted, light grey tweed cap. Has been employed as a bricklayer's labourer, also on farms. He advertises as manager for a Debt Collecting Company. Supposed a native of Houghton Regis, Beds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Liverpool ( City)— For failing to re- port— Licence- holder ALFRED YOUNG, alias TUCKER, WARD, and TAYLOR, Office No. 2974- 97, age 37, height 5 ft, 3J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, flag inside right fore- arm, " V" back of left forearm. A labourer; native of Canada. Sentenced at Chelmsford Assizes, 11th November, 1902, to 3 years penal servitude for stealing an overcoat, released on second licence, 5th ult., which expires 10th prox. c 557. P." stamped on each end; 1 small, with brass at sides); 2 glaziers' diamonds ( 1 about 4 in. long; other about 8 in. long, " F. P." supposed stamped on one); 2 steel 2 ft. rules; 1 2 ft. folding rule, " Ernest Perry" thereon; 2 pairs of callipers ( one inside; other outside); 3 pocket knives ( 1 white handle, 4 blades; 1 brown handle, 1 blade; 1 do., 2 blades); 2 pairs steel frame spectacles in cases; 1 pair compasses; 1 § in. twisted bit; a bunch of keys, " Lancashire Insurance Co.," label attached; 2 office door keys; 1 packet of yellow lead pencils, " H. Revers, Penny Hexagon " thereon; several carpenters' pencils— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes ( sunken) brown, pock marks on fore- head, deep cut scar on right thumb, limps slightly, impediment in speech; dress, long brown overcoat, cord trousers, brown soft felt hat, clogs. A labourer; native of Coalville. Sings at public houses. Information to Supt. Agar, Loughborough. NORFOLK. 25 — Wymondham ( County).— For night poaching at Hethel, 17th December, 1905— WIL- LIAM OSBORNE, alias CLAWKES, age 37, height 5 ft. 9f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar right cheek, 2 moles back right arm, scar left thumb, toes deformed. A native of Loddon.— ALFRED SMITH, age 44, height 5 ft. 4i in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel. A labourer; native of Norwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dunn, Wymondham. NORTH A MPTONSHIRE. 26 — Northampton ( Borough).— For ob- taining £ 5 by a fictitious cheque, 27th ult.— E. FLETCHER, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., well built, complexion ruddy, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey); dress, dark overcoat, brown tweed suit, hard hat or cap. Stated he was the proprietor of a hotel at Buxton. He asked the hotel keeper where he was staying to oblige him with a cheque from his book, then crossed out the name of the local bank, and inserted " The Man- chester and County Bank, Ltd., Buxton, signed E. Fletcher, for £ 5, payable to the hotel keeper," and obtained £ 5 for same. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Northamp- ton. OXFORDSHIRE. 27.— Oxford ( County).— For larceny ( trick) — ANN SMITH, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, hair black, eyes brown, large mouth; wears a large black straw hat, droops over face, trimmed black feathers. Hawkes lace, and pretends to tell fortunes. Is accompanied by her HUSBAND, a gipsy, age about 55, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, clean shaved; dress, drab colour jacket, tight cord trousers, cap. Plays a violin at public houses. Had with them a pony and cart. Warrant issued. 28.— Oxford ( County).— For shopbreaking and stealing a pair of box calf lace boots, size 8; 1 navy blue serge jacket, black lining and buttons, small patch on left shoulder, faded at back; 1 red cotton handkerchief, white edge and spots— TWO MEN ( 1st, age about 50, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, moustache dark, stubby beard, wearing glasses; long black overcoat, black cap with shiny peak, and the stolen boots. 2nd, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion pale, hair light, clean shaved; dress, grey jacket, black trousers, lace boots). Both tramp the country. Warrant issued. 29.— Oxford ( County).— For embezzling 17s. 6d.— EDWARD BIRCH, alias KENT, age 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, flower pot tattooed on one wrist, scar on right knee, walks stiff; dress, black jacket and vest ( double breasted), grey trousers, black and white striped tie, bowler hat. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Oxford. SOMERSETSHIRE. 30.— Bath ( City).— For embezzling £ 18 10s. 4d.— PERCY HILL, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion pale, full face, rather high fore- head, hair light, clean shaved; dress, dark suit, light waterproof cloth overcoat, red tie, black bowler hat. He has been employed as traveller for timber merchants at Bristol, London,, and Bath. About 3 years ago he was licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Llanidloes, previously kept a public house at Welshpool. Absconded 27th ult. May be found in the company of betting men. Warrant issued. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 31.— E Division. — Special attention is called to GEORGE McGIE, alias J. HAMEL SCOTT, and HALL, Office No. S 47082, age about 33, height 5 ft. in., complexion, hair, and slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, hairy mole left cheek, speaks with a slight Colonial accent, who is wanted for obtaining money by falsely representing himself as steward of the s. s. Cowrie of Liverpool. Stated he had been commissioned to convey 2 cases from Canada to the complainants; that he had forwarded the goods by rail from Liverpool, and requested the return of the freightage paid. It is supposed his victims are usually those whose wedding announcements appear in the Times or Morning Post, or the parents of children whose birth is advertised in those papers, giving the address of a relative in Canada. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Southport ( Borough).— For embezzl- ing £ 26 4s., and other sums, between May, 1905, and January, 1906— GEORGE A. ELLIS, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown; usually well dressed. A native of Southport. He was em- ployed as manager to a Carriage Company. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable Southport.
