ROUGE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2278. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICJS GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10 » . A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. I. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. iSLTIOHT S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or uf stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual formj and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13 Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. 1 — Criminal partment. — On forgery at Montreal, thereby obtaining money be- longing to the Crown— DAVID HOBBS, age 44 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., weight 150 lbs., complexion florid, hair brown ( turning grey), close cut pointed beard, rather lame from rheumatic gout. A native of Montrose, Forfar shire. He left Montreal, Canada, on 12th inst., supposed for this country. 2.— Criminal Investigation De- partment. — For forging and uttering — HORACE HOOKE, alias GEORGE LOUTIT, THOMSON TURNER, and WATERMAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face and eyes, large nose, hair and long thick moustache black, stoops slightly; dress, blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. Has been employed as a clerk at Cane Hill Asylum, and at Finsbury Pavement, E. C. Warrant issued. 3.— A Division.— For obtaining goods by false pretences, 3rd and 4th inst.— — TEMPLE, ago about 29, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes blue, 2 front teeth very prominent. A nurse, wearing uniform. Warrant issued. 4.— N Division.— For attempted larceny ( person), and causing grievous bodily harm JAMES TURNBULL, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion fair ( inclined to sallow), hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress, black coat and vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Holloway. Warrant issued. 5.— N Division.— For larceny ( servant) — EMELINE HENDERSON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion pale, long thin face, hair and eyes brown; dress, light blouse, black skirt, black hat. Supposed a native of Bristol or Bath. Warrant issued. Warrant issued. 7.— N Division. — For failing to surrender to his bail for attempted carnal knowledge— CHARLES LEON, age 45, height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion fair, hair, beard, whiskers, and mous- tache light brown, eyes grey; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A YRSHIRE. — Ayr ( County).— HV> r stealing £ 1 It's, at Troon, 17th inst.— THOMAS FOXLEY, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, rather bow legs, hair and moustache dark, large burn scar back of neck, scar left forearm; dress, blue serge jacket suit and cap, light lace boots. A shipyard labourer; native of Northwich, Cheshire. May seek employment with boiler makers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 9.— Biggleswade ( County).— For steal- ing ( bailee), 17th inst., at Shefford, a bicycle, " Coventry X " transfer, No. 106475, nearly new, 26 in. frame, rim brakes, free wheel, rat trap pedals, 28 in. wheels, H in. tyres, plated rims, Y shape, mudguards— JOHN DUMPHREY, age 17 or 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; wearing dark overcoat, brown leggings fastened with straps. BERKSHIRE. 11. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining, by a worthless cheque, £ 6 and a dark brown geld- ing, 15 hands 1 or 2 in., hind fetlocks white, scar right side of mouth, hog mane, knees slightly chipped— GEORGE RAYMOND ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, dark jacket suit ( trousers tight fitting), dark tie, black hard felt hat. Appearance of a horse dealer. He gave a postdated cheque in payment of the horse and received £ 6 in change. Was last seen 17th ult. driving a small pony attached to brown trap, the horse described above and a smaller one tied on behind, and accompanied by A MAN, age 20 to 21, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light; dress, shabby dark brown suit. CARNARVONSHIRE. 13.— Conway ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the Conway Guar- dians— ELIAS WILLIAMS, alias FAWR, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and slight side whiskers black, eyes dark. A native of Glan, Conway, Denbighshire. Will probably be found employed on fanns, and accompanied by his Daughter, age about 16, very weak eyes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rees, Conway. CHESHIRE. 14.— Crowe ( County).— For obtaining 5s. by false pretences, 16th inst.— JOHN BARRA CLOUGH, alias WILLIAM HENRY BARRA- CLOUGH, WILLIAM JONES, ERNEST and HARRY CLARKE, WILLIAM HENRY WIL LIAMSON, HERBERT SANGER, MAIDEN, MADEN, and JOHN ROBINSON, Office No. 2858- 98 ( Case No. 25, 29th ult.), age 32, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, scar each cheek, mole right of neck; dress, pepper and salt colour overcoat with saddle back, bluish trousers, grey cap, blue and white tie, blown boots, horsey appearance. A butcher or coachman; native of Nottingham or Bradford. Sentenced at Wakefield Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1904, to 9 months hard labour for false pretences. Liberated on remission, 24th June last. 19464. Warrant issued. 15.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 25th inst., a silver English lever watch, " James Reade & Co., Coventry," on dial —- A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion ruddy, full round features, high cheek bones, hair and moustache ( short) dark; wearing 2 short blue jackets ( 1 nearly new, and similar to a railway porter's), blue striped muffler, dark cap, with thin light stripe, Blucher boots. Stated he had been transferred from the Goods' Depot, L. and. Western Railway, Ardwick Green to Crewe. Appeared conversant with railway work. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Crewe. 16 — Macclesfield ( County).— For larceny ( lodgings), at Top Poynton, 17th inst.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown; dress, blue pilot jacket, brown cord trousers, black spotted cap, strong lace boots. Stated he was employed repairing telegraph wires on the Canal Bank. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, County Police Office, Macclesfield. CUMBERLAND. 17.— Carlisle ( County).— For stealing from her lodgings at Stanwix, between 16th and 21st inst., an 18 ct. Canadian gold engagement ring, 2 diamonds and opal in centre; 1 lady's umbrella with yellow handle; 1 new flannelette night dress — ELIZABETH SHANNON pr McNEIL, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, cataract right eye, prominent scar on right nostril, broad Irish accent; dress, black dress, black silk blouse, short Eton coat or jacket, blue felt hat, black and white around rim, low shoes, veil. A domestic servant; native of Kirkcud- bright. Is known at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dum- fries, and Carlisle. Wai- rant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Graham, Carlisle. 18 — Workington (^ uvfyX— F « r assault on police, 19th inst.— ALEXANDER HODG- SON, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark, slight moustache brown, large dent top of head, swinging gait; dress, navy blue jacket suit and cap, lace boots. A ship's fireman; native of Harrington. He left Harrington, 20th inst., on the ss. Sarah Brough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cheesman, Workington. ESSEX. 19.— Chelmsford ( County).— For office breaking, at Battles Bridge Railway Station, 15th inst., and stealing 3 door keys; 2 small keys, sup- posed marked " Hobbs & Co."; and 15 half- penny stamps— A MAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 in.; dress, dark jacket, trousers and cap. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 20. — Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing cheques— JOHN COLE ROBERTS, age 34, height 6 ft. Oh in., complexion pale, hair and heavy mous- tache black, eyes dark brown, dots on both fore- arms ; wearing dark clothing, hard bowler hat. A native of Cheltenham. Is a sergeant- major of the 12th Lancers, and up to 6th inst. was regimen- tal- sergeant- major of the Essex Imperial Yeomanry. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Colchester. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21. — Cheltenham ( County). — ALBERT H. CLARKE ( Case No. 18, 28th July last), is now obtaining a living by placing packets of needles under doors, afterwards calling at the houses and asking for the return of the needles or payment for same. Had with him a small dark handbag. He left Reading, 2nd inst., and was then wearing blue serge jacket, faded, dark cord trousers, dark tie, blue motor cap. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot ( County)-— For embezzling £ 1 10s. 3d. — WILLIAM McMAHON, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress ( supposed) dark coat and vest, dark cord trousers, dark cap. A labourer, recently employed as a carman, and is believed to have been a porter at Covent Garden Market. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 23 — Bournemouth ( ConntvX— For larceny, 30th ult.— QUARANTA GASTON, an Italian, age about 32, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, full face, hair black, moustache dark ( curled at ends), eyes brown, one front upper tooth missing; dress, black frock coat, light vest, dark trousers, black silk hat. A ladies' high- class tailor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Bournemouth. 21.— Fareham ( County\— For disobedience I of maintenance order— JOSEPH ROBINSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 6f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, stoops when walking, of good address ; dress, black suit, black hard felt hat. A clerk; native of Letch worth. May seek employ- ment as a groom or labourer. Has served in the Royal Garrison Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. 25. — Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 11th inst., a lady's open face silver Geneva watch, black hands, gold numerals; 1 fine link brass chain; 1 long silver watch chain, fine links with knobs between, tassel at end, old- fashioned; 1 silver necklet, small oval links; 1 safety pin brooch, heart and bird thereon; 1 pair of women's dark brown strap shoes ( nearly new); T pair do. light brown single strap shoes ( much worn); and 7s. 6d. — ARTHUR VIVIAN BEAUMONT, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, small moustache dark, eyes brown, walks badly, tattooed both arms; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, dark trousers with light stripes ( tight fitting), dark brown overcoat, dark cap, lace boots. A porter; native of Winchester. Has served in the Rifle Brigade. Warrant issued. 26.— Winchester ( City). — For stealing, 6th inst., a " Rover* bicycle, No. 35964, enamelled black, white lines, upturned handle bars, transfer on head, " Metor Rover" on shield, rubber pedals, bell, black enamelled lamp— JOHN MARKS, a Jew, age 20, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, nose injured, both little toes deficient; dress, navy blue jacket suit, black hard felt hat, military boots, No. 520. Sup- posed a native of Whitechapel. Recently dis- charged from the Rifle Brigade as medically unfit. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Felton, Win- chester. HERTFORDSHIRE. 27 — Hemol Hempstead ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., at Great Berkhampstead, an " Albatross" bicycle, B. S. A. fittings, 26 in. frame, flat handle bars, new Warwick tyre back wheel, old do. front wheel, Bowden brake back wheel, and front rim brake with small pull up lever, cork grips, black tips, Brooks's saddle, B. 28, \ in. pitch chain, lamp, bell, and plated pump and clips, celluloid mudguards, free wheel— DAVID ZALL, alias ZAHL and SALL, a Russian Jew, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., bow- legged, com- plexion sandy, hair and slight moustache light, eczema on face, hands, and arms; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark trousers, light large plaid cap, brown boots. A travelling watch and clock maker. May be found selling cheap jewellery by auction. Is well known at Rushden, Higham Ferrers and District. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hemp- stead. 28.— Hertford ( County).— For absconding from Hertford Reformatory School, 14th inst.— EDGAR DENTON, age 16|, height 5 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes hazel. — ALBERT POOL, age 16i, height 4 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes dark brown, cross, rose, red dot, black dot, and several marks tattooed on left wrist, scar on right knee ; both wearing cord jackets, roll collars, lined calico, plated or brass buttons, cord vests, back lined calico, khaki drill, no collar, blue Glengarrys, trimmed black braid, surmounted by narrow red braid, worsted socks, cotton shirts, red and blue stripes, red ties, strong lace boots, nailed, Denton's clothing, marked " 731," Pool's marked " 744." Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford. KENT. 29.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For attempt- ing to obtain £ 30 by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of JULIUS M. MITCHELL, alias MAJOR SCARSDALE, age about 60, height about 6 ft., well built, inclined to corpulency, complexion fresh, sharp features, hair and mous- tache turning grey, of good address, can speak 2 or 3 languages, quick in movements; usually weaxs brown overcoat with short cape, velvet collar and cuffs, cloth hat, or black overcoat, black felt hat, carried an ebony stick with twisted ivory handle, red tie pin. He represented that he had obtained a concession from the Mexican Govern- ment to work sulphur and other mines, also to write a. history of Mexico. Advertised for a manager for the mines, and a secretary to assist in writing the book, after engaging persons he attempted to obtain the above amount from one of them for the purpose ol paying the fare of the person's wife to Mexico, stating he had already secured the berths in the steamer. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Folkestone. 30 — Graves find ( B'- rough).— For stealing 20th inst., 2 English concertinas ( 1st, 30 keys; 2nd, 48 keys, marked " No. 4, Lachenal Patent Concertina Manufacturers, London ")— CAP- TAIN ANDREWS ( supposed false), age 65, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, hair ( bald on top) and moustache grey, of good address; wear- ing dark grey overcoat, silk hat, new boots. Carried a silver mounted umbrella. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Gravesend. LANCASHIRE. 31. — Wigan ( Borough). — Escaped from custody while under remand on several charges of shopbreaking — JAMES BUCKLEY, alias GLOVER and GREEN, age 26, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown, ballet girl, woman's bust, clasped hands and heart left forearm; dress, dark mixture jacket, dark cord vest, old grey trousers, old boots. A labourer, frequents common lodg- ing houses, also stays in furnished apartments. Is sometimes accompanied by a woman. May call at houses collecting old boots. Will probably proceed to Yorkshire or Scotland, and be found along canal towing paths or on a canal boat. Pre- viously convicted at St. Helens, Southport, Wigan, Blackpool, and Birkdale. Information to Chief Constable Hardy, Wigan. LINCOLNSHIRE. 32.— Boston ( Cowntu^.— For larceny about the end of September— ARTHUR LINCOLN, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight moustache, hare lip, scar on forehead and lip; dress, check suit, yellow leggings with straps. A painter. May be found lodging at public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Boston. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1905 THE POLICE GAZETTE. 5 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. CITY OF LONDON. £ 10 REWARD. 33.— For embezzling and stealing various amounts, the monies of his employers— ERNEST LOCKE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., HAMPSHIRE. 34.— Fareham ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Havant Union— PATRICK BYRNE, an slight build, complexion pale, hair and very slight moustache dark, full eyes, nose slightly bent to right, of delicate appearance; dress, dark jacket suit. A clerk; native of London. Photograph taken about 3 years ago. Absconded 23rd ult. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Henry H. Hextall of the firm of James Pearsall & Co., 71 and 72 Little Britain, London, E. C., to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Locke. Information to Supt. Stark, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. Irishman, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, mole tattooed on left arm. A labourer. He served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in South Africa. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carman, Fareham. managed electrical works— WILLIAM FRED- ERICK SMITH, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, erect bearing, complexion sallow, hair nearly black, moustache sandy ( dyed black), eyes supposed brown, bracelet, anchor, and mermaid right wrist, right big toe flat, part of nail missing, of good address; dress, check knicker suit with brown leggings, or blue serge square cut jacket suit, usually wears grey cap. An electrician; sup- posed a native of Derby. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. SO.— Church Stretton ( County).— 18th inst., in a wood at Lutwyche, the body of A MAN ( decomposed), age about 60, length 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., supposed grey beard; dress, blue pilot jacket, old cord vest and trousers, cardigan jacket, blue and white check shirt, brown woollen socks, blue and white neckerchief, blue peak cap, old brown laoe boots, wearing straps on right wrist and legs. Found in pockets a small testament, " John Jones " written in pencil inside, and a newspaper cutting, relating to the life of the late Dean Howell, of St. David's, Wales. MIDLOTHIAN. 81.— Edinburgh ( County).— Whereas on the 11th inst., PATRICK DOCHERTY, age 70, was murdered in his house at Clifton Smithy, near East Calder, and a gun metal watch, keyless lever, No. 2,219,394, white dial, hours in figures, a brass wire Albert chain, cable or rope pattern, 2 ply twisted together, bar attached to Albert with a piece of string or tape, were stolen from de- ceased. Found in the house a brown tweed jacket, check pattern, faded, 2 buttons ( 1 brown, 1 black), roughly sewn on right breast, on tape hanger, Shettleston Co- Operative Society, Ltd.," in pockets of same were found a small quantity of tea in a paper, " James Steel, Family Grocer, Main Street, Wishaw," printed thereon; 1 table knife, white handle, short pointed blade; 1 small piece of an old comb, " 3 H. L." scratched thereon; 2 brass buckles, about 1 in. in diameter; 1 red cotton handkerchief, white spots and border; a part of the Hamilton Advertiser, dated March, 1902; aud a copper coin, " In Hoc Signo Vinces " on one side, " Imp et perp Bras Def " on other. In good condition. 78.— X Division— Since 19t. h inst., a dark bay gelding, aged, 13 hands, chipped knees, shot front fetlocks, saddle marked, scar about 2i in. long and £ in. wide on off hind leg, medium mane, tail docked but grown long, in good condition; and a dapple grey gelding, aged, 13 hands 2 in., lame near fore leg, collar marks on shoulders, fore legs recently blistered, long shaggy mane and tail, in fair condition. Found near premises a pair of greyish brown tweed trousers, much worn, patched, and stained with blood; 1 pair dark grey trousers, j> iece cut out; and a red handkerchief, with the Royal Arms stamped thereon.
