All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOE OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. i Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In aU cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 8. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10 » . A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 10. 11. ! 12 13 Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form; and accompanied by a covering letter. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges lor the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR, New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5.— Biggleswade { County).— For cruelty to a horse— ARTHUR BERRIDGE, alias LEAFER, age about 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curly) dark brown, eyes brown, rather deaf, talks loud; dress, dark brown plaid jacket ( raised seams at back), light fustian trousers, dark scarf and cap. A native of Northill, Beds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baldwin, Biggleswade. G.— Leighton Buzzard { County).— For obtaining 4 pairs boots by false pretences, 6th inst. DERBYSHIRE. 9. — Buxton ( County). — For driving a motor car, No. L C 201, to the danger of the public, 7th July last— JAMES NORTH" age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, and slight moustache dark, round face. A motor car driver; supposed a native of London. He holds a licence, No. 17422, issued by the London County Council, with address, " 30 Upper Park Street, Islington, London," thereon, and was employed by the Managing Director of the Automobile De Lux, Ltd., London. James, Buxton. 10.— Chesterfield ( County).— For steal- ing £ 8 17s. 7d., monies of the Shirebrook Colliery Company— FREDERICK BOLER, alias BOWLER, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair and stubby moustache dark brown, of good address; dress, blue serge square cut jacket suit, cap, heavy nailed boots. Is supposed a traveller for a Christmas card company. Warrant issued. 12.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 22nd ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— J. WOODWARD, alias GEORGE BARKER, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown, star left forearm, design of ring with stone on 3rd left finger, small feet; dress, navy blue diagonal juit, light motor cap, lace boots. G. H." left forearm. A clerk; native of Dundee, bentenci- d at Salford Hundred Sessions, 18th February, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for fraud. He calls upon hotel keepers and represents that he is treasurer of a local shop assistant's football club, negotiates for a room in which to hold their weekly meetings, stating a fee of £ 18 18s. will be paid in advance on the first night of meeting. After engaging the room, he gives a written agreement signed by himself, and purporting to have been signed by the secretary of the club, he then produces a list and asks the hotel keeper to head it with a donation of £ 1 Is., as an incentive to other donors, stating that it will be refunded with the fee for the room. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Andover ( County).— For stealii g a bicycle, and £ 8 ( 2 cases)— JOHN ALFRED CARTER, alias ALFRED WILLIAM WELLS, age 22, height 5 ft. 1\ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, mole on chest and back. KENT. 21 .— Folkestone ( Borough).— For obt- iin ing £ 1 Is. by false pretences, 10th inst. — CHARLES MORETON, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, thin face, hair dark brown, eyes brown; wearing dark brown overcoat, black hard felt hat. He calls at Private and Temperance Hotels, engages a room as a committee room for a football club, of which he represents he is the secretary, produces an agreement to be signed, and solicits a subscription towards the club. ( Supposed identical with Expiree Frederick George Harrison, Office No. 2962- 98. See Case No. 67, 4th January, 1901.) Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Bury ( County).— For attempting to ob- tain £ 4 by false pretences McLEAN, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( inclined to sandy), light brown, slight mous- tache light sandy, eyes grey; dress, dark jacket and trousers, blue vest with blue stripes,, double breasted, brass buttons, black hat. Hawks imita- tion furs. He represents himself as a steward on a vessel at Salford Docks, calls at solicitors', com- mercial and insurance offices with furs and necklets, which he states are valuable, but are afterwards found to be dyed rabbit skins. LINCOLNSHIRE. 26,— Spilshy ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 22nd ult., at Skegness, a £ 50 Bank of England note, No. £ 06755, issued 2nd June, 1903— JAMES BIRIvETT, alms J. MELVILLE, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 10£ in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ginger or red, clean shaved, carries hands behind when walking; dress, lightish brown over- coat, short, dark brown suit, hard felt or high hat, tan colour boots. Is well known amongst bookmakers and betting men. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 2S.— Risca ( County) — For wounding with intent to murder, 4th inst., at Machen— DAVID EVANS, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress brown jacket and trousers with white specks ( trou- sers repaired on knees and seat with cloth of different material), corcl vest with moleskin back, black and white silk neckerchief, flowers worked thereon, dark motor cap with light stripe. NORFOLK. 30.- Aole ( County). — For housebreaking, 25th ult., at Lingwood, and stealing a watch ( re- covered) and £ 1 lis.— BENJAMIN HYLTON, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, full face, hair and moustache ( waxed at ends) brown, eyes grey; dress, dark mixture tweed suit, green, with grey stripes, long dark grey over- coat, dark cap. SOMERSETSHIRE. 32. — Bath ( City). — For stealing a green leather purse containing a £ 5 Bank of England note; a banker's cheque for £ 2 10s. on the London and South- Western Bank, 127 Holland Park Avenue, London, drawn by Mrs. Santell in favour of J. Cullen, dated 4th inst., endorsed ' J. Cullen"; and £ 4 10s.— ALFRED CHARLES KELLIN, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion rather dark, hair brown, moustache dark brown, right forefinger injured, addicted to drink; dress, dark morning suit, dark tie, black hard felt hat. An hospital or sick attendant. Has been employed at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. Warrant issued. M — Tunstall ( County).— For obtaining 2s. by false pretences at Chatterley, 10th ult.— ALICE STAITE, age 19, height 5 ft., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, supposed black three- quarter length jacket, black skirt, light blouse, brown straw hat, brown shoes. A dealer; native of Fulham. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 17th May, 1898, to 3 years penal servitude, remanet of a former sentence, and 2 years supervision for lar- ceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Chelten- ham. 42. — Hastings ( Borough). — For stealing 29th ult, a child's mail cart, medium size, single seat, white cane body, brown hood, 2 iron handles, cross piece at back, 2 small front wheels, 2 large back wheels ELLIS, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 2 in, complexion dark; wearing dark clothing. She was accompanied by TWO MEN ( lst, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in, complexion fair, hair and moustache light. 2nd, age about 60); THREE GIRLS, ages 16 to 18; and a CHILD, age 2 years. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings. 43 — Hove ( Borough').— For obtaining £ 17 by a worthless cheque— P. E. W. SMITH, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in, complexion fair, long narrow head, hair brown, clean shaved, sometimes wears glasses; dress, brown or grey suit, straw hat, brown boots. Stated he was a journalist. Asso- ciates with professional cricketers and football players.
