POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2238. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 3. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of Is. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. _ A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. cows. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual formj and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR. New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— Convict Supervision Office.— JOHN SMITH, Office No. 3313- 02, Case No. 1, 26th ult., has been served with notice to report. 2.— Convict Supervision Office.— GEORGE WILCOX, alias HICKMOTT, Office No. 497- 05. Before release from prison he was not directed to report himself to police, there- fore if found up to lst April, 1907, he should be served with the usual notice, and the obligation to report until his supervision expires, explained. 3.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For forcing and uttering forged cheques, and obtaining £ 163 and £ 83 by fraud — KATHERINE PARKES, alias J. COLE and LAURA ALEXANDER ( may assume the names of COX or DEAN), age 32 to 35, tall, complexion sallow or pale, long face, high cheek bones, eyes sunken; dress, dark skirt, sometimes green costume, light jacket, large black hat with black feather, long white feather or fur boa. She obtains the signa- tures and banks of gentlemen, then sends a messenger with a forged cheque to a bank, and afterwards to pay a bill at a shop in the neigh- bourhood, where she had previously ordered goods, the messenger then meets her at a railway station, and hands over the proceeds. She is now believed to be committing offences in the Provinces.— Sup- posed accompanied by A MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair and slight mous- tache brown, eyes ( small, peculiarity in left) dark; dress, jacket suit, hard felt hat. 4.— B Division.— For obtaining pictures to the value of £ 130, by trick — DOCTOR HAMILTON, age 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache and beard ( close cut) dark ( turning grey), eyes ( prominent) light brown, of good address; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat. 5.— S Division* — For stealing a gold diamond crescent aigrette, star centre; 16 brooches ( 1 light blue enamel, monogram, " H. J. A native of Vienna or St. Paulin, Austria. 6.— 5 Division.— For stealing. 31st ult , 4 blouses ( 1 black glace, plain with tucks; 1 black merve, frill all round, trimmed silk lace; 1 Geisha silk, trimmed valentine lace; 1 black delaine white ring pattern)— BERTHA LITTLEWOOD, Office No. M 5367, age 48, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey. 4th left finger stiff; dress, black cape and skirt, white bow tie, black hat, high crown, brown feather in front. A native of Birmingham. 7.— x Division•— For causing grievous bodily harm to a police constable, 4th inst.— ELI OLLIFFE, age 34, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown; dress, brown jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, brown cap or soft felt hat, heavy lace boots. A navvy; native of Acton. May seek employment at railway, electric or sewerage works. Warrant issued. 8.— Y Division.— For stealing. A coachman; native of London. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 24th June, 1902, to 3 years penal servitude for horse stealing. Licenced 27th September, 1904. C 429. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Windsor ( dounty).— For absconding with workhouse clothing— CHARLES ALLEN,, Age 43, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, large flat nose, cross guns one arm, bird on tree other, lame, left leg has been broken; wearing cord trousres, and boots. A native of Windsor. Supposed proceed- ing to Scotland. Has served in the Berkshire Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holding, Clewer, Windsor. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— Renishaw ( County).— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings, to the amount of £ 37 2s., by false pretences at Eckington, between 29th June, 1904, and 8th May, 1905 — WILLIAM HENRY FARR, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stiff build, complexion and hair ( slightly grey) and moustache dark, oval face, eyes dark brown, addicted to drink; dress, black jacket and vest ( double breasted), grey trousers, black tie, light cap, may be wearing a white silk muffler. A native of Sheffield. Frequently sings at concerts at public houses. Has been employed as a photo- grapher's canvasser. About 4 years ago he was discharged from the Royal Artillery as medically unfit. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Renishaw, near Chesterfield. ESSEX. 11.— Brentwood ( County\— For stealing from his lodgings, 3rd ult., at Warley, a dark tweed jacket suit with small red stripes ( nearly new)— GEORGE STEVENS, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, wears glasses, 2 dots back of left wrist, 1 back of left hand and wrist, nail of 3rd left finger deformed; dress, dark tweed suit, neckerchief, dark cap, may be wearing the stolen suit. A labourer; late of Wandsworth. Has served in the Essex Regiment, also been an asylum attendant. Sentenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 19th October, 1899, to 9 months imprisonment for indecent assault, and bound over at the South- western Police Court, 29th April last, for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 12— Southminstor ( County). — For larceny, 20th ult.— THOMAS SAVILL, alias AMOS PRENTICE, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, thin face, hair dark, head and bust of woman on one hand; dress, dark jacket and vest, silver grey trousers with stripes, wear- ing boot tops as leggings. A labourer; native of Chigwell St. James. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gibbons, Southminster, or to Inspector Waterman, Maldon. HADDINGTONSHIRE. 13.— Haddington ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— WILLIAM TURNER, age 23 to 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, full round face, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, " W. Turner" supposed tattooed on left forearm; dress, blue jacket suit, blucher boots. Is said to be a native of London or Nottingham. Was employed as boots at a hotel, previously as a labourer. Spoke of having worked as a vanman, also of having served in the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Mann, Haddington. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Kingsclere ( County).— For malicious wounding, at Ashe, 27th ult.— STEPHEN GREEN, alias WELLS, a gipsy, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., complexion freeh, rather thin face, pointed nose, hair light brown, slight moustache and side whiskers light; dress, dark check coat, cord trousers, tight fitting. Travels the country with a cart painted dark blue, picked out yellow, " C. Wells, Salisbury, Wilts," on a piece of tin on off side, drawn by a cream colour pony, about 13 hands, long mane and tail. — Accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, brown jacket, black skirt, white straw hat; and 3 children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mayes, Kingsclere. 15. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — For ab- sconding with workhouse clothing— GEORGE COLE, age 64, height 5 ft. 10 in., stoops slightly, complexion sallow, small features, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, dark tweed suit, neckerchief, cap, shoes. — HENRY BOURNE, age 76, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and beard grey, slight, eyes grey; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, cord trousers, neckerchief, dark motor cap, boots. Warrants issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 16.— Hitchin ( Cou " tv).— For obtaining 4s. 6d. by false pretences, 19th ult., at Royston—- A WOMAN, supposed — LAWRENCE, age about 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, Ijair brown; dress, navy blue skirt, pink flannelette blouse, short black cape, black hat, trimmed black and white in front, carried a small green fancy leather bag. She took a situation as cook, and obtained the above amount for railway fare. The references she gave were false. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Reynolds, Hitchin. KENT. 17.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 26th April last, at Herne Bay, a lady's pneumatic bicycle, 23 in. frame, raised handle bars, cork handles, New British front tyre, Clincher back tyre, black leather gear case, rubber pedals, Crabbe thumb brake, Morrow hub, free wheel— A WOMAN, age 18 to 20, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, dark clothes, tam- o'- shanter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jacobs, County Police Office, Canterbury. 18.— We 81 Mailing ( County).- For obtaining money by false pretences— J. ENNIT, age about 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark, beard and moustache grey, stoops; dress, light tweed coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, brown over- coat, rubber collar and front, hard felt hat, all shabby, carried a brown portmanteau. He called at good class houses, obtained orders for a supply of post cards with photographs of the houses thereon, received the deposits, and promised to forward the cards in a few days. He was last heard of at Cambridge. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 19.— Dover ( Borougn).— For forging and uttering a banker's cheque for the payment of £ 9 — ROBERT ILLINGWORTH, age 31, height 5 ft. 10J in., complexion dark, hair and eyes black, dots on right forearm; dress, striped jacket suit. A waiter; native of Christchurch, Preston. Is a Reservist of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. LANARKSHIRE. 20.— Glasgow (<?%).— For stealing clocks, watches and jewellery, entrusted to him for repairs — JOHN SIMPSON, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, full round face, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, blue jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, hard felt hat. He carried on business as a watchmaker, & c., at Main Street, Maryhill. Absconded 22nd ult. Is said to be a native of Banffshire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Stevenson, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Kirkham ( County).— For shopbreak- ing, between 21st and 24th ult., and stealing a quantity of clothing ( recovered) — TWO MEN ( 1st, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion sallow, thin face, moustache light, hair dark brown, eyes blue, glides one eye, tattoo marks on arms; dress, old dark jacket and vest, pepper and salt colour tweed trousers, cap, lace boots with square toes. Fond of speaking of South Africa. Is said to have served in a Lancashire Regiment during the late war. 2nd, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., well built, square shoulders, com- plexion fresh, clean shaved, black spots on nose and ears; dress, dark jacket, old moleskin trousers, dark scarf, cap). Information to Supt. Ormerod, Kirkham. 22.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing from lodgings, 16th ult., an 18 ct. gold dress ring, set diamond and 4 rubies; 1 gold brooch, pearl in centre; 1 small silver pencil case, seal ( blue stone with bird) at end; 1 underskirt, pink frills; 1 cream colour silk tie; 1 linen chemise trimmed with needlework;; 1 pair white cotton drawers; 1 pair new black ribbed stockings; 1 white silk blouse, trimmed 3 rows of insertion down front; 1 new light green and white plaid flannel shirt— — JACKSON, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( inclined to curly) dark, clean shaved, eyes ( large) grey blue; dress, three- quarter length fawn colour over- coat, dark grey check suit, dark grey tweed cap, boots. Appearance of a theatrical.— — JACK- SON, age about 20, height 5 ft, 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( worn low on forehead and side of face) dark; dress, navy blue skirt, black and grey mixture sac jacket, light muslin blouse, blue tam- o'- shanter, may be wearing the stolen property. Warrant » issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 23.— Grimsby ( County).— For fowl stealing 26th ult. — CHRISTOPHER NOBLE, age 35, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, thin face, peculiar looking, hair ( curly in front) and small moustache light brown, top of 2nd right finger missing, scar back of right hand; dress, black jacket, yellow cord trousers, white scarf, light shoes. A collier; native of Berwick- on- Tlveed.— BILL DARLOW, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., red face, high cheek bones, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shaved; dress, light check coat and vest, one lap of coat has been repaired with different material, white cord trousers, blue and white oheck muffler, strong nailed boots. Both are well known at Doncaster and district as poachers and thieves. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stennett, Grimsby. 24. — Lindsey ( County).— On commitment warrant, having been sentenced to 2 months im- prisonment for cruelty to a horse — WALTER GRUMMITT, alias JONES and STRAIGHT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion florid, full face, hair brown, clean shaved, injury to centre of upper lip, causing it to be enlarged and droop slightly; dress, brown coat and vest, Bedford cord trousers. A horse- dealer's assistant; native of Dereham, Norfolk. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Eggleston, Lindsey. NORFOLK. 25.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing ' bailee), £ 2 5s., 26th ult,— DANIEL CUNLIFFE, alias MEADOWS and COOKE, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, has a habit of twitching his face; dress, greyish brown tweed jacket suit, light grey cap, glace kid lace boots, carries a light cane. Is fond of football. Supposed a native of Portsmouth. Is believed to have served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Winch, Nor- wich. PEMBROKESHIRE. 26.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a silver Geneva lever watch, No. 10007, " A. G. Rees" scratched inside of back case— DAVID ZAHL, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion pale, hair light, clean shaved, eyes ( sunken) blue, speaks English fairly well; dress, grey jacket suit, light grey cap. Sup- posed a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. Has been in England about 2 years. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Haverford- west Castle. SHROPSHIRE. 27. — Oswestry ( County). — For stealing, 13th April last, a horse ( recovered)— ARTHUR SPIERS, age about 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fair, long thin features, peculiar mouth, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, large irregular teeth, heavy eyelashes; dress, dark square cut jacket suit, dark neckerchief / with narrow white stripe, grey plaid cap with large peak, light FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1905. Warrant issued. 28. — Oswestry [ County). — For stealing ( bailee), 16th ult., a gold keyless Waltham lever watch, No. 5648190, " Orient" stamped inside case, case worn, plain outside, 9 ct. gold chain, small square links, old- fashioned, and gold medal, " Sutton F. C., 1901, and H. J. L." on back, and monogram " G. H. C." on front, attached — ARTHUR SIDNEY BARNES, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, scar left side of neck. A grocer; native of Leominster. He served 12 years in the Shropshire Light Infantry, was dis- charged in March, 1904. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Oswestry. SOMERSE TSHIRE. 29.— Frome ( County).— For larceny ( dwel- ling)— GEORGE HENRY WATKINS, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, left little finger crooked, 2nd left finger useless; dress, dark jacket, slop underneath, light cord vest and trousers, dark cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt.
