POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1905. VOL. XXII., No. 2236. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address o] some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 8. A. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form; and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning persons missing can only be accepted on pay- ment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. THE EDITOR. New Scotland Yard, London, S. W. SPECIAL NOTICE. IN certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the finger prints alone being sufficient for the purpose ; but if a photograph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be re- quired to complete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. BROWNE, alias ADA LOUISA BROWN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, hair dark auburn; dress, black dress and toque. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For fraudulent bankruptcy — ROBERT DUNDERDALE COCKSEDGE, late of Devon- shire Square, E. C., and " Queen's Arms" P. H., Bateman Street, Soho, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale ( slight colour on cheeks), hair and moustache brown: usually wears frock coat suit, silk hat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Biggleswade ( County \— For em- bezzling £ 2, 2nd ult,, at Potton — WILLIE DENNIS, age 27, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark and curly; dress, grey Oxford jacket suit, black and white check cap, Salvation Army overcoat, double rubber collar, button boots. Was employed as a draper's traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baldwin, Biggleswade. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 5— High Wycombe ( Bnrtruph^.— Yo- non- payment of maintenance arrears and costs— DANIEL SMITH, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey; usually wears dark clothes. DERBYSHIRE. 6.— Derby ( County).— For larcenv at Long Eaton, 22nd ult. — GEORGE REECE. oliis REEVE, FEATHERSTONE, and STANLEY, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark swarthv, rather long face, hair and moustache dark auburn; dress, dark coat, vest, aad cap, dark cord trousers, heavy lace boots. A foundry labourer; native of Clown. Has been employed at Coventry, Leamington, Mansfield, and Stanton- by- Dale. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Airey, Ccunty Poiice Office, Derby. 7.— Renishaw ( CountyV— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings, to the amount of £ 37 2s., by false pretences at Eckington, between 29th June, 1904, and 8th May, 1905 — WILLIAM HENRY FARR, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stiff build, complexion and hair ( slightly grey) and moustache dark, oval face, eyes dark brown, addicted to drink; dress, black jacket and vest ( double breasted), grey trousers, black tie, light cap, may be wearing a white silk muffler. A native of Sheffield. Frequently sings at concerts at public houses. Has been employed as a photo- grapher's canvasser. About 4 years ago he was discharged from the Royal Artillery as medically unfit. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. ESSEX. 9.— Brentwood ( Countus.— For stealing from his lodgings, 3rd ult., at Warley, a dark tweed jacket suit with small red stripes ( nearly new)— GEORGE STEVENS, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, wears glasses, 2 dots back of left wrist, 1 back of left hand and wrist, nail of 3rd left finger deformed: dress, dark tweed suit, neckerchief, dark cap, may be wearing the stolen suit. A labourer; late of Wandsworth. Has served in the Essex Regiment, also been an asylum attendant. Sentenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 19th October, 1899, to 9 months imprisonment for indecent assault, and bound over at the South- western Police Court, 29th April last, for larceny. Marden, Brentwood. 10.— Southminster iCmmtxj).— For leav- ing his wife and children chargeable to the Com- mon Fun! of the Poor Law Union, Maldon — FREDERICK HAWKES, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair ( curly and bushy m front) and eyes dark, growth size of a cherry centre of back; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, shoes. A carpenter; native of " Burnliam- on- Crouch. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by A. W. Freeman, Esq., Clerk to the Guardians, Maldon, for the arrest of Ilawkes. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)— HER TFORDSHIRE. 11 .— Hitohin ( County).— For obtaining 4s. 6d. by false pretences, 19th ult., at Royston— A WOMAN, supposed — LAWRENCE, age about 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, l; air brown; dress, navy blue skirt, pink flannelette blouse, short black cape, black hat, trimmed black and white in front, carried a small green fancy leather bag. She took a situation as cook, and obtained the above amount for railway fare. The references she gave were false. May be found at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Reynolds, Hitchin. KENT. 12.— West Mailing ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— J. ENNIT, age about 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark, beard and moustache grey, stoops; dress, light tweed coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, brown over- coat, rubber collar and front, hard felt hat, all shabby, carried a brown portmanteau. He called at good class houses, obtained orders for a supply of post cards with photographs of the houses thereon, received the deposits, and promised to forward the cards in a few days. He was last heard of at Cambridge. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 13.— Dover [ Borough).— For forging and uttering a banker's cheque for the payment of £ 9 — ROBERT ILLINGWORTH, age 31, height 5 ft. 10i in., complexion dark, hair and eyes black, dots on right forearm; dress, striped jacket suit. A waiter; native of Christchurch, Preston. Is a Reservist of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 14.— Kirkham ( County).— For shopbreak- ing, between 21st and 24th ult., and stealing a quantity of clothing ( recovered) — TWO MEN ( 1st, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion sallow, thin face, moustache light, hair dark brown, eyes blue, glides one eye, tattoo marks on arms; dress, old dark jacket and vest, pepper and salt colour tweed trousers, cap, lace boots with square toes. Fond of speaking of South Africa. Is said to have served in a Lancashire Regiment during the late war. 2nd, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., well built, square shoulders, com- plexion fresh, clean shaved, black spots on nose and ears; dress, dark jacket, old moleskin trousers, dark scarf, cap). Ormerod, Kirkham. 15.— Lancaster ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., at Heysham, a suit ( recovered) and a black glazed leather portmanteau, about 18 in. long, 12 in. deep, and 9 in. broad, fastens with brass lock, two compartments lined blue and white stripe material— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion pale, long features, hair dark brown, clean shaved, speaks quietly; dress, dark mixture suit and cap, red or dark blue tie with white spots. Stated he was an officer's servant. Information to the Acting Superintendent, Lan- caster. 16.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing from lodgings, 16th ult., an 18 ct. gold dress ring, set diamond and 4 rubies; 1 gold brooch, pearl in centre; 1 small silver pencil case, seal ( blue stone with bird) at end; 1 underskirt, pink frills; 1 cream colour silk tie; 1 linen chemise trimmed with needlework;; 1 pair white cotton drawers; 1 pair new black ribbed stockings; 1 white silk blouse, trimmed 3 rows of insertion down front; 1 new light green and white plaid flannel shirt— — JACKSON, age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( inclined to curly) dark, clean shaved, eyes ( large) grey blue; dress, three- quarter length fawn colour over- coat, dark grey check suit, dark grey tweed cap, boots. Appearance of a theatrical.— — JACK- SON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( worn low on forehead and side of face) dark; dress, navy blue skirt, black and grey mixture sac jacket, light muslin blouse, blue tam- o'- shanter, may be wearing the stolen property. Warrant1 issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 17. — Lindsay ( County). — On commitment warrant, having been sentenced to 2 months im- prisonment for cruelty to a horse — WALTER GRUMMITT, alias JONES and STRAIGHT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion florid, full face, hair brown, clean shaved, injury to centre of upper lip, causing it to be enlarged and droop slightly; dress, brown coat and vest, Bedford cord trousers. A horse- dealer's assistant; native of Dereham, Norfolk. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Eggleston, Lindsey. 18.— Grimsby ( County).— For fowl stealing 26th ult. — CHRISTOPHER NOBLE, age 35, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, thin face, peculiar looking, hair ( curly in front) and small moustache light brown, top of 2nd right finger missing, scar back of right hand; dress, black jacket, yellow cord trousers, white scarf, light shoes. A collier: native of Berwick- on- Tweed.— BILL DARLOW, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., red face, high cheek bones, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, clean shaved; dress, light check coat and vest, one lap of coat has been repaired with different material, white cord trousers, blue and white check muffler, strong nailed boots. Both are well known at Doncaster and district as poachers and thieves. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stennett, Grimsby. 19. — Sleaford ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a horse and harness ( recovered) — JOHN HENRY HILLMAN or SMITH, age about 30, height 6 ft. 1 in., walks erect, complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light, may be clean shaved, left thumb and end of right middle finger missing. A fishmonger; supposed a native of Manchester. He visits inland towns, and repre- sents that he is opening a fish business, to sell direct from the fishing vessels to the consumers, and hawks with a barrow, or has a stall in a market. Stays at second- class hotels. Well known at Grimsby and in Nottingham district. May be ac- companied by his wife and 2 children, ages 9 and 5 years respectively. They may be found at private lodgings. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. Information to Supt. Edgley, Sleaford. NORFOLK. 20.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing ( bailee), £ 2 5s., 26th ult.— DANIEL CUNLIFFE, alias MEADOWS and COOKE, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, has a habit of twitching his face; dress, greyish brown tweed jacket suit, light grey cap, glace kid lace boots, carries a light cane. Is fond of football. Supposed a native of Portsmouth. Is believed to have served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Winch, Nor- wich. OXFORDSHIRE. 21.— Oxford ( County).—* or leaving her children chargeable to the Parish -— EMMA SMITH, age 39, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, eyes brown, bail front teeth; dress, black jacket, brown skirt, sailor hat. SOMERSETSHIRE. 22.— From** (^" I'wl,— For larceny ( dwel- ling)— GEORGE HENRY WATKINS, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, left little finger crooked, 2nd left finger useless; dress, dark jacket, slop underneath, light cord vest and trousers, dark cap. Rawlings, Frome. 23.— Yeovil ( County).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, September, 1901— WALTER CHANT, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair nearly black, eyes dark, thick hands, short fingers. A carpenter; native of West Chin- nock, near Yeovil. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by Mr. John E. Rodber, Clerk to the Yeovil Guardians, for the arrest of Chant. Information to Supt. STIRLINGSHIRE. 25. — Stirling ( Burgh). — For fraud — ROBERT HILTON, alias ROBERT AMBLER and WILLIAM HENRY BROWN, Scotch Register No. 1379- 04, age 55, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache nearly white, eyes grey, of smart appearance; dress, grey tweed suit, felt hat. Has been convicted at Gloucester, Cardiff, Swansea, Winchester, Reading, Stafford, and Han ley. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Ferguson, Stir- ling. SUFFOLK ( East). 26.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For leaving their children chargeable to the parish of Ipswich — LEONARD WALTER MULLETT, age 27, height 5 ft. 1 in., weight 11 stones, complexion dark, hair black, eyes hazel, anchor, heart, and sailor tattooed on right forearm, dots on left fore- arm ; dress, dark blue pilot cloth suit. A barge- man and quay labourer; native of Ipswich. — WILLIAM BARBER, age about 46, height 5 ft. 7 in., weight 13 stones, complexion ruddy, hair ( bald on top) and heavy moustache dark brown. A plasterer; native of Kent. At one time he was secretary of the Plasterers' Union, and addressed meetings. Warrants issued. Information to Lieut .- Colon el Russell, Chief Constable, Ipswich. SUFFOLK ( West). 27.— Clare ( County).— For stealing a quantity of wheat on or about 20th February last — THOMAS LIVERMOOR, age 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes blue; dress, grey jacket, brown trousers, grey cap, heavy nailed boots. A labourer; native of Fulbourn, Cambs. Has been employed in omnibus stables in London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baidwell, Clare. SUSSEX ( East). 28.— Lewes ( County).— Expiree JAMES DILLON, Office No. 2479- 00, Case No. 44, 5th October, 1900, not now wanted, having been ar- rested at Burton- on- Trent for larceny ( person) as Charles Bennett. 29.— Patcham ( County).— For stealing ( servant), 8th ult., at Portslade, 2 £ 5 Bank of England notes; and a quantity of jewellery— JOSEPH WARTZ, alias MUNTZ, age 19 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sandy, hair yellowish red, high cheek bones, face slightly broad, lisps and twitches right side of mouth; dress, dark coat, black trousers, lilac colour small knot tie. Dalmon, Patcham. 30.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 15th ult., a blue serge lounge suit; 1 tin clothes box, " T. S." thereon; and 10s.— LUCY MARION SWADDLING, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion pale, rather thin face, hair dark brown, nose has been broken; dress, brown costume, brown straw hat, trimmed large brown feather and wreath of ivy leaves. A native of Eastboure.— Had with her A GIRL, age 16 months, hair light, eyes dark; wearing blue frock, red or white Morocco leather shoes. May be found at Clapham or Woolwich.— Supposed accom- panied by A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in., thick build, complexion, hair and rather heavy moustache dark; dress, brownish plaid lounge suit, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Major Teale, Chief Constable, Eastbourne. 31.— Hove ( Borough).— For embezzlement.— ALEXANDER STEWART CARNOIIAN, an Irishman, age 33, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) dark, moustache brown, eyes blue, scar over left eve, left thumb recently broken, slightly bow legged, walks quickly, ad- dicted to drink; dress, dark grey or white striped lounge jacket, with vertical pockets, navy blue serge vest, grey flannel trousers, grey check cap, boots with patent leather fronts, kid tops. Has served in the Volunteer Artillery. Was employed as a laundry carman. Absconded 23rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hove. WARWICKSHIRE. 32.— Longford ( County).— For absconding from their employment while on licence from Bir- mingham Industrial School— WILLIAM BAR- FIELD, age 17, height 5 ft., complexion freckled, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cut over left eye — WILLIAM THOMAS WALKER, age 17, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue. A shipping agent; native of Tice- hurst or Groombridge, Sussex. Well known at Liverpool. ( See Case No. 2, 5th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. SUSSEX ( East). H.— HOVO { Borough). — For deserting his wife— FREDERICK DENYER, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., bow legged, complexion sallow, hair black, thick moustache reddish brown, eyes dark. A carman; native of Littlehampton. Ab- sconded about 4 years ago, formerly served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards, afterwards employed as a stoker on pleasure steamers from Brighton. Warrant issued. A reward of £ 1 Is. will be paid by the Guardians of the Steyning Union for such information as will lead to the apprehension of Denyer. Information to the Chief Constable, Hove. For stealing £ 2 4s. — HARRY LEAKE or lilBBY, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, thick lips, hair inclined to ginger, eyes blue; dress, black jacket and vest, blue check trousers, dark muffler, black cap, heavy boots. A black- smith ; native of Leeds.
