All communications for insertion in the POLICI GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR O » THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, 8. W. 2. particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue oj the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one ijaue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings oj stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 6s per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 6s. to 10 » . A remittance of 6j. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of un officer of not less rank than Superintendent; und if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of pnlire, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. aLTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or oj stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announce- ment will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual formf and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. Alt payments must be in advance, either at the office, Aew Scotland Yard, by I'ostal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division.— For stealing a piano organ and barrow, painted black, " No. 526 " on keyboard— MAC JENNINGS, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey; dress, grey coat and vest, cord trousers, dark cap. A native of Marylebone, London. Supposed travelling the country with a troupe of 3 dancers and the stolen organ. Warrant issued. 3.— y Division. — Hor stpaling£ 60 18s. — JOSEPH WESTON, a^ e 23 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes brown; dress, grey suit, black hard felt hat. A native of Bayswater, London. Was employed as a clerk at the Midland Railway Hotel, St. Pancras. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For misappropriating £ 5,783 8s. lid., pro- perty of the Official Receiver in Bankruptcy, Carey Street, W. C.— LAWRENCE HASLUCK, age 55, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey; wearing dark clothcs, silk hat. An accoun- tant. Has recently travelled as manager to the Carl Rosa Opera Company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stark, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Wokingham { County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Arborfield, 23id ult., a plain locket, old fashioned; 1 plain gold ring; 1 pair gold rimmed glasses in case, " Solomon, Reading"; and £ 14 7s. 6d.— FRED CHAP- MAN, ago 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( cut short) brown, eyes ( small) blue, high cheek bones, thin legs, large feet, speaks with Irish accent; dress, drab colour square cut coat, side pockets, riding breeches, light cap, black shiny gaiters. Supposed a native of Birmingham. Has been employed as a rough rider by horse dealers, at Reading and other places. He left Goring, 23rd ult., for Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. E. T." on wrist, woman on one arm, addicted to drink; dress, grey overcoat, sup- posed black suit, black cap with badge in front, usually wears riding breeches and leggings. CUMBERLAND. 1— Workington { County).— For desert- ing his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Common Fund of the Cockermouth Union, 13th October 1904 — MATTHEW ARMSTRONG, age 54, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., very stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, addicted to drink. A seaman. Has been employed as a dock gate keeper; also served in the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cheesman, Workington. DERBYSHIRE. 8. — Derby { County).— For stealing £ 1 » , 22nd ult.— FREDERICK WEBSTER, age about 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, nair and eyes brown, " F. W." and dot tattooed on left wrist, tattoo marks on chest, scar on left shoulder, stoops; dress, blue serge 6uit, white tie with blue spots, light brown cap, lace boots. Appearance of a groom. Warrant issued. 9-— Derby { Count/). — F< r obtaining £ 3 lis. 6d. by false pretences, at Long Eaton 14th ult.— EDWIN BOOTH, alias LIONEL RAY- MOND EVANS, age 32, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, thin face, hair dark brown, moustache ( cut short) dark, eyes blue, thin red nose, stoops; dress, dark coat and vest, blue trousers, pepper and salt colour overcoat, black bowler hat. Supposed a native of West Brom- wich or Streethay, Staffs. Stated he was agent to a Legal Friendly Society at Liverpool, also a can- vassor for an Assurance Company at Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Airey, Derby. 10.— Derby { Borough).— TOT failing to report — Supervisee HARRY WILLIAMS, Office No. 1842- 04, age 23, height 5 ft. 3£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, anchor back left forearm, bracelet left wrist, " H. W. D." back left hand. A farm labourer; native of Northamp- ton. Sentenced at Derby County Sessions, 7th April, 1904, to 8 months hard labour and 1 year supervision for burglary. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( oontinued)— DEVONSHIRE. 11— Exeter ( County).— For stealing from Newton Abbot Railway Station, 16th ult., a brown Gladstone bag, 26 in. long, 2 straps, " A R L " thereon, containing a cheque book on the Plymouth Branch of the Wdts and Dorset Bank, with 10 consecutive cheques to No. A617246; several print shirts, woollen vests, collars, handkerchiefs, ( marked " Alex. Reynolds"); 1 pair boots; razor in case, " Dobie, Glasgow," thereon ; hair brush ; and a bank deposit note for £ 155; also for obtain- ing 2 rings by a worthless cheque, No. A617246, at Teignmouth, 16th ult.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair and moustache light, eyes blue, narrow features, right shoulder slightlv deformed, walks rather lame, small feet, white " hands; dress, dark rainproof overcoat, dark suit, tie with red and blue stripes, light grey cap, lace shoes. When tendering cheques he produces the above bank deposit note. He cashed 2 of the above cheques at Bournemouth, 19th ult. Sup- posed a railway platform thief. Warrant issued. DURHAM. 12.— South Shields ( Borough).— For ob- taining £ 5 by false nretences, 14th ult. — GEORGE MARSTON, age 28 to 30, slight build, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., thin features, hair dark, clean shaved, speaks with Yorkshire accent, turns his toes outwards, wears 3 rings on right little finger; dress, dark jacket, tight fitting trousers, hard felt hat. He inserts advertisements in local newspapers, viz.: " Horses for sale, war- ranted sound, price and one month free trial," giv- ing stable address, gives his dupes a form of war- ranty for deposit, and promises to put the horse on rail next day. Had in his possession a black horse cob, 14- 3 to 15 hands, age about 9 years, hog mane, docked tail, sore shoulders, recently singed; a ohestnut horse, about 16 hands, hind fetlocks white, rather long joints, white star on forehead, long mane, docked tail with long hair, mouth and eye piebald, bare patch near hip, slight click off hind leg; a light riding saddle, blue felt saddle pad; double rein bridle, double check straps • large ring snaffle bit; nickel plated stirrups, all in good condition. ESSEX. 13 — Grays ( County) — For stealing a lady's silver keyless watch, chased back, gold hands, main spring broken, bow missing, nearly new; 1 pink flannel petticoat— MARY HOLLAND, alias STONE and GOOCH, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair black, eyes blue; dress, light grey skirt, black and white check bodice, grey mackintosh, grey woollen shawl, black sailor hat. A native of Aveley. She obtains lodgings, commits larceny, and decamps. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Apprehen- sion cancelled. 1 > — Southend- on- Sea' ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 15s., by a worthless cheque— W. L. SMITH, alias FRANCES HAWLEY, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark, clean shaved, eyes brown, twitches his mouth when speaking, scar back of head; dress, tweed jacket suit, grey mix- ture overcoat, brown velvet collar, hard hat. Is believed to be a traveller for incandescent burners, at one time he traded as Hawley & Co., Argrave Road, Upper Holloway. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 16 — Cardiff ( Hortmuh). F'> r Stealing from a lodging house, a silver Geneva watch, No. 2022, and a silver curb pattern chain, with silver cross, heart, and gilded sovereign as pendants— GEORGE HENRY ABBOTT, Office No. 670- 02, age 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, slight moustache, eyes grey, " S" front, " G A P " back left forearm, left leg deformed below knee. A painter; native of Lincoln. This man called at a lodging house, stated his friends could not accommodate him, and wished to stay the night; then visited his room and stole the articles mentioned. He lived near Swansea for some time, and while there endeavoured to ob- tain a situation as an insurance agent. May seek similar employment elsewhere. Sentenced at Sheffield City Quarter Sessions, 9th July, 1902, to 12 months hard labour for larceny. Liberated on remission, 25th May, 1903. 11132. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing a sun metal watch; 1 9 ct. gold chain; and £ 2 — FRANK OWEN, alias FARM, age 22, height 5 ft. 1 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, large scar left side; dress, grey jacket and trousers, brown jersey, red and white knitted muffler, spring side boots. A labourer; native of Hammersmith, London. Was invalided from the Navy about 18 months ago. Usually stays at Church Army Homes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. Iti.— Aldershot ( C< mnty).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 19 th ult., a lady's sable colour necklet, fastens with chain and hook; 1 sable colour muff; 1 pink silk tie, — A WOMAN, who gave the name of CRIPPS, correct name supposed LAURA ELD- RIDGE, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 3£ in., com- plexion fresh, round face, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, dark grey sac back jacket with steel buttons, 2 side pockets, chain tab, navy blue skirt, rough material, piped with same kind of material, black chiffon hat, trimmed under with yellow flowers, wore a chain purse left side, and the stolen fur, & c. She also obtained from shopkeepers a white muslin petticoat, and a black skirt, by re- presenting that they were for a barmaid at a local hotel. She is wanted for a similar offence at Read- ing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For steal- ing from his lodgings, 5th ult., a lady's silver watch, floral dial ; 1 lady's 18 ct. gold buckle ling, chased around edges, set 2 small diamonds ; 1 lady's half- hoop ring, set 5 turquoise ; 1 do 9 ct. plaited ring ; 1 do. 15 ct. dress ring, set square cut ruby, pearl on each side; 1 silver watch, open face, rather large numerals, smooth outer case scratched, moon shape glass, also scratched— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair ( thick on top) light brown, moustache sandy, eyes sunken, rather long nose, slightly freckled, of consumptive appearance ; dress, blue coat and vest, grey striped trousers, grey mixture cap. He stated he was a carpenter, and had come fronn Reading. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 16, 13. h ult., and GEOKGE MATTHEWS, Case No. 30, 30th December, 1901. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For em- bezzlement, 20th December, 1904— JOHN HANS- PLANT, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, face slightly pitted similar to pock marks, clean shaved, well educated. A leather merchant traveller. Is well- known to boot and shoe retailers in towns on the South Coa6t. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 21.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a dark grey lounge coat and vest MUS- CAT, age. 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair and mous- tache light, 2 front upper teeth missing; of shabby appearance. HER TFORDSHIRE. 22.— Hemel Hempstead ' '" » *> ty\— For embezzlement— WILLIAM MACPHERSON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, small moustache dark, speaks with Scotch accent, flat feet, walks badly; wearing dark grey overcoat, hard felt hat. A wine and spirit merchant's traveller; native of Perthshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hemp- stead. KENT. 23 — Canterbury ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, a dark chestnut cart mare, 16 hands, 6 years old, white blaze down forehead, white mark on off hind leg, medium mane, long tail— JOHN NILER, alias HARRIS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., round shoulders, com- plexion and eyes dark, hair ( cut close) dark brown; dress, grey waterproof overcoat, dark suit, gold colour pin with small stone therein, black hard felt hat, light lace boots. A horse dealer. Supposed brother of Man described in Case No. 28, 27th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jacobs, County Police Office, Canterbury. 21.— Sandwich ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 14th and 29th December, 1904— A MAN, who gave the names of HARRY WILKS alias DAVIS, age about 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache dark, scar right upper jaw and on chest; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, dark double breasted vest, check scarf, railway guard's overcoat, blue cap. He represented that he was employed by a Telephone Company, was a Reservist of the North Lan- cashire or York and Lancaster Regiment; also that he was a gardener. He received 10s. from a man at Nonington for a lady's silver watch, No. 15819, open face, chased back, gilt wreath around figures. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. 2S.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For stealing, 18th ult., a " Revolution" bicycle, free wheel, front rim brake, raised handle bars, plated rims, black enamelled, red and gold lining, nlateu lamp no mudguards— A MAN, who gave the name of CHARLES SAUNDERS, age about -., height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, moustache light; dress, light brown reefer jacket suit, light brown cap, brown boots. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Thornton, Gravesend. LANARKSHIRE. 26.— Glasgow ( City).— For failing to sur- render to his bail, on a charge of larceny ( person) — ALEXANDER McPHERSON, alias JOHN WILSON, JAS. WATSON, DENIS, GIL- FEATHER, JOHN CONNOR, and DENIS, and DAVID KILFEATHER, Office No. S 207, age 23, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes light blue, dot base left thumb, " S. H. B." left, " D. K., C. P., N. M. B. J. E. T." right forearm, body pock marked. Native of Glas- gow. An expert travelling pickpocket, usually well- dressed, of smart apnearance. Has been con- victed at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dumbarton, New- castle, Sheffield, Blackpool, Rotherham, Liverpool, York, and Dublin. Warrant issued. 27.— Glasgow ( rity).— For obtaining £ 8 by fraud, 27th December, 1904— HARRY BED- FORD TURNER, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light, wears glasses, speaks with London accent; dress, navy blue serge suit ( jacket double- breasted), crimson tie, hard felt hat, carried a stick. A canvasser. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Detective Department, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Blackb rn ( Borough},— F'> r larceny ( lodgings)— AUGUSTUS DALEY, alias BERT COOPER, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( long on back) black, eyes dark, 2 front upper teeth promi- nent; dress, chocolate colour suit with light stripes, black soft felt hat, lace boots. Had with him a brown Norfolk jacket, two dark overcoats ( 1 trimmed around collar and cuffs with black astrachan, other with light sable fur). He ob- tained lodgings, stated he was engaged by a theatrical company. Absconded 12th ult., taking with him a large brown portmanteau containing lady's wearing apparel. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Lewis, Black- burn. LEICESTERSHIRE. 29.— Leicester ( County).— F> r nhtaining 6s. by false nretences at Glenfield, 30th December, 1904— ARTHUR REEVES, alia* REECE, age 28 or 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, rather long full face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, slight impediment in speech, supposed tattooed back left wrist; dress, navy blue jacket suit, dark blue woollen jersey, white silk necker- chief, grey plaid cap, brown kid gloves, lace boots. He called on a person whose son is in India, from whom he represented he had brought a box containing ostrich feathers, & c., and would forward same fr<> m Tilbury Docks on receipt of 6s. for payment of carriage. YORKSHIRE ( North Riding). iiO.- Malton ( County).— For housebreaking at Edston, between 4th and 11th December, 1904, and stealing 2 old silver verge watches, Arabic figures on 1, other No. 54972, Roman numerals; 1 steel Albert; 1 brass do.; 1 dark wool carriage rug with red stripes; 1 pair new black wool stockings with dark red stripes round top; 1 pair dark red cuffs— WILLIAM McATEER, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, irregular teeth, varicose veins right calf; dress, dark check jacket and vest, dark trousers with blue stripes, black leggings, strong lace boots. A labourer or farm servant May visit Belfast. Has been previously convicted. ( See Case No. 48, 23rd December, 1904.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heald, Mai ton.
