All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ^ TIOHTS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mty result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. Native of Great Yarmouth, where he has been in business as a printer. Sentenced at South London Sessions, 12th March, 1902, to 12 months hard labour for larceny. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Derby. 9 — Eckington ( County) — For attempted rape at Whitwell, 24th ult.— JOHN DEVON- PORT, alias JACK DEVON, age 32 to 35, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, supposed burn scar on left cheek; dress, navy blue jacket suit, blue front, check cap, new light lace boots. A bricklayer's labourer ; has served in the Royal Artillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Eckington, near Sheffield. ESSEX. 10.— Thorpe ( County).— For deserting his 2 children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Tendring Union — FREDERICK ARTHUR JAMES, alias ROGERS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 9 in., thin features, moustache dark, eyes blue, nose has been broken. A bricklayer's labourer. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. 11 .— Thorpe ( County).— For deserting his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Common Fund of the Tendring Union — FREDERICK COLLINS, age about 56, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) dark, tnrning grey, supposed blind one eye. He called on a fruit merchant, represented that he had a ship, the s. s. Minet u. due in London ( mentioned a date 4 dajs in advance) with a cargo of fruit, produced an Italian bill of lading, and o'he papers, and stated that as the merchant had been recommended to him by 2 Covent Garden dealers, he had called with a view of making an arrangement as to the disposal of the cargo on commission. There is no vessel named Min- ito registered at the Port of London. Warrant issued. li.— Portsmouth { Borough).—. For desert- ing his 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the parish of Portsmouth, 22nd March last— WILLI A M BEN HAM, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and moustache dark, addicted to drink. Stonor and Tom Brown" on inside; 1 brown leather collar box ; 1 pair brown leather gloves; 1 dark suit with white stripe; 1 dark grey cap ; 1 motor do.; I check flannel vest; 1 fancy green vest; 1 pair old brown leather boots; 1 silver half huuter watch, " J. S. H." and lion on shield at back, silver chain, silver matchbox, and silver cigarette holder, attached— GEORGE CLARK, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar back right thumb and on left leg ; dreas, light brown velveteen jacket, old moleskin trousers, black bowler hat, lace boots. Is a deserter from the Bedfordshire Militia. He left his uniform by the roadside near Hertford, 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Hertford. ISLE OF WIGHT. 19.— Ryde { Borough).— For non- payment of £ 46 17s. maintenance arrears. — WILLIAM KICKARD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache inclined to ginger, large abscess scar on one side of neck at point of jaw, of smart appearance. ' A watch- maker, jeweller and electrician. Has served in the Army. Absconded in October, 1902. Warrant issued. Pin tograpli can be seen on application. Information to the Chief Constable, Ryde. KENT. 20.— Canter bury { City).— For stealing several sums of money— FRED READ, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion and slight moustache dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown ; dress, blue jacket and vest, striped trousers, black overcoat, black hard felt hat. He was employed as local manager for a London firm of meat im- porters and salesmen, and has occupied similar positions at Margate, Southsea, Eastbourne, and Brighton, where he is well- known. Absconded 25th ult. Warrant issued. 21 — Canterbury { City).— For obtaining money by worthless cheques — AUGUSTUS MIRAMS, age 53. height 5 ft. 8J- in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, short side whiskers turning grey, eyes hazel, burn scar back right calf, mole left side of neck, springy gait, of good address ; dress, dark suit, dark covert coat, hard felt hat. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 6th April, 1893, to 6 months ; and at Cambridge County Sessions, 18th October, 1895, to 9 months imprisonment for similar offences. Warrant issued. A tramp ; stated that he was a native of Portsmouth. Wag selling primroses, carried a brown wicker basket. Was convicted at Hove in 1901 ; at Brighton, Worthing, and Steyning in 190-' ; at Hailsham and Eistbourne in 19l 3 ; and at Worthing, 6th February last, of begging and drunkenness. Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 31. — Bradford { County). — For stealing, 25th ult., at Pudsey, an overcoat; 1 pair gloves and a pipe ( recovered) ; 1 magnifying glass in black case; and a carriage key— GEORGE BURROWS, alias LITTLE JUMPER, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3^ in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue; dress, dark coat and vest, cord trousers, blue cap, lace boots. A native of Bradford. Travels the country mending cocoaout matting and doormats, stays at common lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crawshaw, Court House, Bradford. BERKSHIRE. 32.— Wokingham ( County).— Remanded till 9th inst., charged with larceny at Maiden Erlegh Steeplechases — NATHANIEL BEN- NETT, alias WILLIAM BURKE, age 7c, height ft. 5£ in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, wart corner left eye, scars on forehead, varicose veins both legs, left elbow dislocated, scar under chin, right forefinger, mole left wrist; dress, grey J coat, blue vest and trousers, old boots. States he is a native of Manchester. Was convicted 18th June, 1897, at Ascot, as a suspected person, and loth March, 1899, at Bow Street, for begging. Information to Supt. Goddard, Wokingham. ESSEX- 33. — Brentwood { County). — Committed for trial at adjourned Quarter Sessions at Chelms- ford, 18ih inst., for housebreaking— PATRICK JOHNSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 6J in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar back of head, over left eye, morning star, " P. J." tattooed on right wrist, " F. H." and heart, 4, I love B. L." in heart back of right hand, half ring on right little finger, " F. H." on back of left hand, left arm and leg deformed ; dress, brown morning coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, light grey cap, silk neckerchief. A native of Doncaster. Found in his possession a plain silk handkerchief, name torn out of one corner ; 1 new Japanese silk handkerchief, hem stitched ; and a pawn ticket relating to a jacket and vest. Sentenced at Aylesbury, 15th November, 1901, for housebreak- ing. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Has been tramping the Midland Counties. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 34.— Saffron Walden { County).— Sen- tenced, 3ril inst., to one month imprisonment for larceny— GEORGE BUTLER, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown; dress, brown jacket suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Witham. Supposed previously convicted at Romford and Gloucester, and wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Harrington, Saffron Wal- den. TUESDAY, MAY 179, 1904. Native of Harrow. Calls at good class houses atid states he has been directed by th « occupier ( who has just left the town by train) to deliver plants and receive payment for name. The money is paid, and it is subsequently ascertained that his statement is false, and the plants worthless. He invariable uses the name of Wilson. Sentenced at South London Sessions, 12th November, 1902, lo 9 months hard labour for larceny ( false message). Liberated on remission, 20th July, 19' 3. 9425. \ Y arrant issued.
