POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1904. VOL. XXI., No. 2102. 1. All communication* for insertion in the POLIOI GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to TH » EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10 » . _ A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcement* concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same icili be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. LICENCE HOLDERS AND SUPERVISEES. In most cases in which Licence- holders and Supervisees residing in the Provinces fail to report themselves and whose arrest is con- sequently desired, the Editor is requested to insert the particulars in the GAZETTE. Arrests on such informations are made subsequently, but the particulars are not always forwarded for the purpose of the original information being can- celled as required by Rule 9 of the Regulations; the Editor therefore desires to call special atten- tion to this matter with a view to the Rule mentioned being invariably acted upon. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— B Division.— For obtaining money by fraud — CHARLES F. EGERTON alias CAPTAIN EGERTON, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache dark ; wearing dark overcoat, silk hat with mourning band, wears glasses. He issued circulars offering Hovis Bread Co. Shares for sale, and obtained money by sending a messenger to a town address for letters which contained cheques, & c. Had in his possesion a cheque book on the Royal British Bank, London, Nos. 62021 to 50, which he may fraudulently utter. Warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For stealing, 23rd ult., 3 pins ( 1 large sapphire, surrounded with dia- monds, can be used as a stud; 1 sapphire, sur- rounded with sprays of small diamonds; other recovered)— A. SHARP, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, thin face, rather long nose, clean shaved, scar on chin, addicted to drink, is fond of betting and billiards; dress, dark overcoat, black suit, black hard felt hat. Supposed a native of Watford. Warrant issued. 3.— T Division.— For obtaining £ 16 5s. 6d. by fraud— A. A. FALCONER, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, long thin face, hair ( turning grey) dark, long drooping moustache light, large feet; dress, dark grey overcoat, velvet collar, black morning coat and vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Biggleswade ( County).— For dis- obeying a summons for allowing 5 horses to stray, 19th ult.. at Southill— GEORGE HOWARD, alias WILLIN, age about 25. height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion dark, hair, slight moustache and eyes brown ; dress, corduroy suit. Was travelling the country gathering rabbit skins. & c.; had with him a caravan, painted green, and a 2 wheel cart, painted blue, 3 brown horses. 1 black mare, and a white pony. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baldwin, Biggleswade. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Farina don ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a bicycle— ARTHUR ROBINS, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes light grey, crooked nose; dress, navy blue suit, grey cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gamble, Faringdon. 6.— Wokingham ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 1 6s. by false pretences, 16th December last, at Sandhurst — WILLIAM REEVES, alias WILLIAMS and KING, age abont 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, brown Norfolk jacket, cloth trousers and leggings, white necker- chief, black hard hat, heavy boots. For several years he has carried on a system of fraud upon shopkeepers by representing himself as a farmer, and obtaining orders for rabbits, poultry, potatoes, etc., receiving payment in advance. Usually gives his address as Park Farm, Cobham, Pirbright, or Fleet. Has been convicted at Reading, Win- chester, and Greenwich. Stated he was a native of Exeter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Goddard, Wokingham. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 7.— Beaconsfield ( County).— For steal- ing, 23rd ult., a bicycle, free wheel, 26 in. frame, A Won Clincher Tyres, odd pedals, right crank and pedal slightly bent, plated rims blacked over, 2 thumb brakes, transfer " The Beaconsfield, A. Morford, Beaconsfield," head lock— P. HOFFMAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache light, London accent. Supposed a native of Germany. He visits pro- vincial towns, where he obtains food and lodgings and small loans of money by representing that he had been in the employ of the Orient Steam- ship Company, and that he had recently returned from Australia, produces ships' discharge papers, and states that he has been robbed, but was en- deavouring to obtain, through a London Bank, £ 2 7 due to him as wages. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearman, Slough, or Inspector Marks, Beaconsfield. CA MB RIDGESHIRE. 8.— Newmarket ( County).— For neglect- ing his children, leaving them chargeable to the common fund of the Newmarket Union— WIL- LIAM GORDON, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair, moustache, and eyes dark brown, lame. A farm labourer; native of Burwell, Cambs. Sometimes employed as a chimney sweep. May be found in Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable White- church, Newmarket. CHESHIRE 9.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For obtain ing food and lodgings by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of JOHNSON, age 28 to 30, height 5 It. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut phort) brown, eyes blue, scar over right eye, large upper lip, 1 front tooth missing; dress, light 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. McHale, Hazel Grove, near Stockport. £ 5 REWARD. 10.— Macclesfield ( Borough)— For em- bezzlement— JOSEPH GLORGE HARRISON, age about 38, height 5 ft. 1 or 5 in, complexion fair, hair ( inclined to sandy) light, clean shaved, near sighted, wears gold rimmed glasses, walks erect with head thrown back; dre6S, blue serge suit, dark overcoat. Native of Warrington. Has been employed as a brewer's traveller. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Greenall, Whitley & Co, Ltd, Warrington, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Harrison. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Maccles- field. ESSEX. 11 — Romford ( County).— For leaving his wife and 4 children chargeable to Romford Union, 10th inst.— ALBERT JAMES NEWSTEAD, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in, complexion fresh, bloated, hair dark brown, moustache brown, heavy eyebrows dark, eyes hazel, scars back right hand and wrist; dress, dark grey jacket and trousers, fancy speckled vest, black hard felt hat, had other clothing in his possession. A clerk or traveller; native of March, Cambridge. ( See Case No. 19, 23rd October, and Case 53, 4th December, 1903). Warrant issued. 12 — Romford ( County).— For leaving his wife and 7 children, chargeable to the Romford Union, 3rd inst.— CHARLES BAWDEN, age 44, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in, complexion fair, hair ( bald on top), heavy moustache and whiskers light, eyes blue, right thumb rather flat through an inquiry; dress, black morning suit, grey overcoat, hard felt hat, lace boots. A blacksmith; native of Cam borne, Cornwall. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. V&.- Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For forging, 1st inst, a cheque for £ 23 on the London and Provincial Bank, Southend — GEORGE HARRY TOWNSHEND, age 60, height 5 ft. 4 in, stout build, complexion florid, slightly pock- marked on nose, hair grey, moustache light ( turn- ing grey), eyes blue, wears glasses, walks rather badly, carried head slightly forward when walking, very talkative; well dressed. He takes lodgings in a quiet neighbourhood, and advertises in London and local papers for clerks. Supposed identical with Henry Harrison, Case No. 20, 27th November, 1903. Warrant issued. 14 — Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst, at Hadleigh, a blue serge reefer jacket, black lining; 1 white silk hand- kerchief ; 4 new white linen do.; several coloured handkerchiefs; 2 mufflers ; 1 silver Geneva watch, white dial, steel hands, dent on edge of case ; 1 white metal keyless watch, } plate ; 1 do. stop watch, white dial, gold hands, Swiss make; and watchmakers' tools, viz, 4 screw- drivers ; 2 pairs pliers ; 2 files ; 1 pair tweezers— CHARLES FREEMAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, hare lip, " C F" left forearm. Supposed wearing some of the stolen clothing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend. FLINTSHIRE. lb.— Mold ( County).— For stealing a framed crayon picture; 1 hand bag, and a number of frame samples — HERBERT ADAIR, alias MORRIS, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in, stoops, slight build, complexion very sallow, thin features ; dress, long dark grey Irish frieze overcoat, black trousers, felt hat, lace boots, carried a brown hand bag. Supposed a native of Desford, Leicestershire. Was accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 in, thick set, complexion ruddy, round face, large eyes ; dress, short black jacke't, brown< kirt. lace boots, carried a small black bag. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daviep, Mold. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 16.— Stroud ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences DAVIDSON, alias TIBBS ( supposed false), age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 in, slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( worn over ears), and eyes dark, of good address ; dress, black jacket, dark blue skirt, white sailor hat with black band, white veil with large black spots. She stated that she was Secretary of a Women's Pension Fund, and obtained the above amount by representing that it was for the purpose of obtaining votes necessary to secure election to the fund, also stated that she would obtain for the person elected a pension for life. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Biggs, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Winchester ( City).— For obtaining goods and money by false pretences— WILLIAM TROKE, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in, complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark, peculiar expression in eyes, addicted to drink; dress, old blue serge suit, blue muffler with red and black stripe, dark cap, light lace boots. He plays a piano at low public or beer houses. May seek employment as a labourer or jobbing gartlener. Stays at Church Army homes, common lodging houses, or low beer houses. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Felton, Guild- hall, Winchester. 18.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For em- bezzlement— HERBERT SLOANE, age 24, height 5 ft. 10 in, complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown, moustache brown; ' dress, blue serge suit and cap, white muffler, heavy nailed boots. Was employed as a coal carter. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For being concerned with a man in custody, charged with burglary, 5 th inst. ( See Case No, 51)— WILLIAM GILLETT, age about 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion sallow, full face, slight moustache dark; dress, blue serge coat, blue cloth trousers, cap. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. JERSEY. 20.— St. Heliers.— For embezzlement of over £ 700— CLEMENT JOSHUA LE FEUVRE, age about 48, height 5 ft. 5 in, stout build, round shoulders, complexion swarthy, hair, moustache, and eyebrows black ( turning grey), eyes dark. A rate collector ; native of Jersey. Absconded 4th or 5th inst, accompained by his son, age 15, short, slight build, whom he stated was going to join the Navy or Engineers at Portsmouth May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Officer of Police, St. Heliers, Jersey. 23.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For indecent exposure— ERNEST FRANK HOLLIDAY, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown; dress, blue serge suit, long dark overcoat, hard hat. A stoker; native of Maidstone. Was employed at a mill. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Manchester ( City).— For failure to report— Licence- holder ALEXANDER MONROE, alias PATTERSON, HENDERSON, HAMIL- TON, LOCKHART, CHARLTON, CURRIE, and CORRY, Office No. 2037- 99, age 39, height 5 ft. 4f in, complexion fresh, hair brown ( bald on top), eyes grey, scar right wrist, right elbow and left wrist dislocated, dot between left thumb and finger. A ship's cook ; native of Newcastle- on- Tyne. Sentenced at Dublin City Commission, 16th October, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Liberated on licence from Maryboro' Prison, 15th ult, and is supposed to have gone to Newcastle- on- Tyne. 25.— Manchester ( City).— For failure to report— Licence- holder CHARLES WHALLEY, Office No. 757- 00, age 24, height 5 ft. 3£ in, com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, long scar left forearm, scar right eyebrow, and base of right thumb, 1st right finger crooked. A machinist; native of Blackburn. Sentenced at Blackburn Quarter Sessions, 4th January, 1901, to 4 years penal servitude for shopbreaking. Licenced 29th ult. b. 3. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 26.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For obtaining a cheque by false pretences ( Marking Ink Fraud, see POLICE GAZETTE, 2nd May, 1902)— H. GUTH- RIE, 65 Willesley Street, London, E. ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in, com- plexion and eyes dark, hair and heavy moustache black, of Jewish appearance, good address; dress, black Chesterfield overcoat, silk facings, serge trousers, silk hat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Barry, Rochdale. KENT. 21.— Canterbury ( County).— For obtain- ing food and money by false pretences at Barham, between 2nd and 12th inst.— A MAN, who gave the name of ARTHUR STEIN, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in, complexion fair, red cheeks, hair light brown ( thin on top), eyes grey, speaks softly; dress, blue overcoat, black jacket and vest, dark grey striped trousers, hard felt hat ( glossy), collar size 15£, " Umbria" thereon, rubber front, red and dark striped tie, kid boots, nearly new. Represented himself as a ship's steward, and that he was recently discharged from a ship at Tilbury Docks, stated that his money would be transferred to Lloyd's Bank, Canterbury also that he had lost £ 18 at Dover. Supposed identical with P. HOFFMAN, Case No. 12, 12th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jacobs, County Police Station, Canterbury. 22.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For larceny ( trick)— Expiree MARION JOHNSTONE, alias MEACHAM. VINCENT, NADEN, and LENNOX, Office No. 872- 99, age 45, height 4 ft. 6 in, com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, legs deformed, walks lame ; dress, black skirt, brown cape lined with fur, or black cape with fur round neck, sealskin or fur hat. Sentenced at Leeds Assizes, 2nd December, 1895, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced, 1st April, 1899. She wrote from New Romney for a quantity of art needlework, value £ 11 lis. 6d„ to be sent on approval for a sale of work, and sold a portion to the mistress of a private school at Ashford. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Folke- stone. NORFOLK. 27.— Norwich ( City).— For attempting to obtain £ 10 by a worthless cheque. No. H7458, on the Economic Bank, Limited, 18 Bishopsgate Street Within, E. C, 19th ult.— A. E. EATON, alias HEAD ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, clean shaved, of good address ; dress, dark 6uit, grey mixture cloth overcoat, black hard hat, wore large diamond ring and pin. He calls at houses and represents that he is a valet, and that his employer will shortly take possession of a house in the neighbourhood, ascertains the names of the occupiers and the tradesmen with whom they deal. He then calls on tradesmen and requests them to cash a cheque for £ 10, purported to be written by a customer, in favour of above. Supposed identical with Man, Case No. 14, 5th inst.; 48, 19th June; 24, 10th July; 4, 24th July ; 28, 21st August, and 43, 2nd October, 1903. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Winch, Guild- hall. Norwich. NOR THUMBERLANO. 2S.— GOS forth ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 6s. 7d. by fraud— PETER COGAN ( supposed false), age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown; dress, dark coat and vest, supposed fustian trousers, blue muffler and cap. He ordered a quantity of groceries to be sent to a ship at Walker Staithes, and in payment, produced seamen's worthless advance notes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Morpeth, or to Supt. Hay, Gosforth. OXFORDSHIRE- 29.— Watlington ( County).— For obtaining 2s. and food and lodgings by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of JIM FARNEY, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, light grey coat and vest, dark striped trousers, plaid cap, heavy lace boots, nailed, piece of leather roughly nailed across tread of each boot. Stated he was a blacksmith and a native of Tunbridge Wells, also that he had obtained employment in the neighbourhood. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRIC7 aO.— E Division*— For btertliug a bank cheque for £. 056 19*. 6 i.— ROBERT JAMES MACLAIN, an American, ag « 42. height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, long thin face, broad chin, hair ( bushy, turning grey, nearly white on top, inclined to curl) dark, eyes ( deep set) light brown, thick eyebrows dark, 3 deep vertical lines on forehead, horizontal lines each side, long scar on one cheek near ear, large teeth ( some filled gold), long thin hands, occasionally drinks heavily ; dress, light check morning or brown jacket suit, black bowler hat. Appearance of an actor Absconded 22nd December, 1903, accom- panied by his wife, age 24, height 5 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, round face, several front teeth stopped with gold, erect bearing ; well dressed. An American. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. HA DOING TON SHI RE* 31.— Haddington ( County).— For house- breaking and larceny, 8th inst. — JAMES CONNOR, alias RODGER and McGUIRE, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache light brown ( heavier than shewn in portrait), eyes ( sunken) grey, scar right temple, eyebrow, nose, wrist and unuer right knee, scar left eyebrow and upper lip, walks erect, deep drawling voice. A coal miner; native of Maryhill, Glasgow. Is known in the West of Scotland as The Ganzie. ( See No. 115- 96, Scotch Criminal Register). Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 3d.— Rotherham ( Borough).— For failing to appear to his recognisances at Rotherham Quarter Sessions for larceny ( lodgines)— JOSEPH PARKER, alias HENRY WILSON, Office No. 2905 97, age 30, height 5 ft. 2^ in., complexion LANARKSHIRE. 32 — Glasgow ( City).— lor forgery and uttering 36 promissory notes, lst December,- 1903 — THOMAS C. BROWN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, dot left forearm. A native of Chelten- ham.— WALTER CAINES, age 15. height 4 ft. 10 in , complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes and moustache dark, scar left side of abdomen; usually wears dark clothing.
