ALL communications for insertion in the POLICI GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THI EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZITTI, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning perstns whose apprhension it sought will be inserted in one iwue of the POLIOI GAZITTI, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient t » enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. I. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5a. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10J. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an efficer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ^. TIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and. as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 18. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same wUl be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g.:— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, Ac., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For obtaining 10s. by false pre- tences, 14th ult.— THOMAS CLARKSON, alias EVEREST, age about 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hair, slight side whiskers, and moustache light brown ( turn- ing grey), eyes light blue or grey, long thin white hands, of good address ; dress, grey or slate colour frock coat, vest and trousers, black felt hat. Sup- posed a native of London. He called upon civil engineers in London and the Provinces, and obtained money by representing that he was a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers in London; also, that he had been employed at a Royal Naval Dockyard, but was now in reduced circumstances. Warrant issued. 2.— A Division.— For shooting with in- tent to murder, lst inst.— WALTER MEREDYTH THOMAS, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, rather long nose; wearing black frock coat, brown high cut vest, dark Chesterfield overcoat, black tie, grey cap with dark rings, brown spats. Supposed a native of Westminster; formerly a captain of the Imperial Yeomanry. Warrant issued. 3.— c Division. — For conspiracy and obtaining 4s. by fraud— W. J. JONES, age about 40, height 5 ft. lu in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown, of smart appearance; dress, dark frock coat, red fancy vest, dark striped trousers, silk hat.— MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, thin face, hair and moustache light, shabby appearance; wearing dark grey overcoat, bow tie, black hard felt hat, 1 shoe, 1 boot. Warrant issued. 4.— C Division.— For obtaining 10s. by false pretences, 16th ult. GORDON, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., high shoulders, com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, carries head forward when walking ; dress, dark blue cloth costume, trimmed red at neck and breast, dark hat trimmed blue velvet, black veil, white woolly gloves. She obtained the above amount by falsely representing that it was for a woman whose husband was killed on the Tube Railway. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. LONDON. arrears — STANLEY CITY OF 5. — For bastardy POWELL ETHERINGTON, late of Sidney Road, Richmond, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., inclined to stoop, complexion sallow, thin face, hair and mous- tache brown, a heavy smoker; dress, black morning coat and vest, grey trousers and cap. A tobacco- nist. Warrant issued. 6.— For obtaining £ 35 by false pretences— ELIJAH AUGUSTUS ROBERTS, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair auburn, clean shaved, eyes brown; dress, navy blue serge suit, or grey mixture jacket suit, hard felt hat. A billiard marker; native of Newcastle, New South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Wokingham ( County).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences at Arbor- field— FREDERICK WILSON ( supposed false), age 23, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, red pimples on face ; dress, dark brown coat, blue vest, dark grey trousers, blue cap, shoes, carried an ash stick. He stated that he had left his pony and cart at an adjoining public house and that he was buying poultry at neighbouring farms. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Goddard, Wokingham. 8.— Windsor ( Borough).— For embezzling various sums of money— CHARLES WOOL- HOUSE, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, moustache inclined to be light, small red spot ( birthmark) under left eye; dress, black coarse canvas cloth overcoat, faded, blue cloth breeches, black muffler, motor cap, jack boots. Has served in the Army Service Corps, and was with the 7th Company in South Africa. Absconded 23rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Nicholls, Wind- sor. BUCKING HA MS HIRE. 9.— Slough ( County). — For leaving his child chargeable to the funds of the Eton Union— JASON OLIVER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion ruddy, sunburnt, hair and mous- tache light, eyes light blue; dress, light grey jacket and vest, cord trousers, grey cap, military shirt, boots and belt with brass buckle, usvally wears dark blue muffler with white spots. Has been employed by the Victoria Paving Co., and may be found on public works. Warrant issued. 10.— Slough ( County). — For embezzling various sums, the monies of the Amersham Board of Guardians— ARTHUR EDW7IN MATTHEWS, age 41, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes dark brown; wearing dark clothes, had with him a light brown mackintosh. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( coiUinued)- CHESHIRE. 11.— Oak mors ( County).— For housebreak- ing, 24th ult., at Barrow, and stealing 2 silver candlesticks, about 5 in. high, fluted, with square bottom, crest near bottom, " Lion on haunches holding an arrow "; 1 plated egg steamer; 1 Shef- field plated box with lid on an open worked tray with 3 small feet— STEPHEN SMITH, alias JAMES GRAY, age 31, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light sandy, eyes grey, Union Jack and American flag with clasped hands in centre, star on top, tattooed left forearm, cut mark between eyebrows; dress, f- length dust coat, blue serge vest, dark trousers mingled with blue, blue spotted tie, black hard hat. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia; has served in the Cheshire Regiment. Sentenced at Chester Assizes, 9th March last, to 9 months im- prisonment for burglary and housebreaking, liberated 14th ult. CORNWALL. 12.— Falmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult., a gold ring, ruby in centre, 2 small diamonds each side of ruby ; 1 silver cross and chain; 1 silver bracelet, link pattern, padlock " Mizpah " thereon, attached ; 1 lady's thick black cape, with 2 or 3 tabs across the front; 1 light silk blouse; 1 umbrella ; and about £ 6— A WOMAN, who gave the name of ALLEN, age about 55, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, long features, large nose, heavy eyebrows dark, several front teeth missing, speaks with North Country accent; dress, black flowered skirt, alpaca blouse, black bonnet with 2 lavender colour flowers. She obtained employment and stated that she was a professional cook. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Endean, Falmouth. DURHAM. 13.— Gateshead ( Borough).— For failure to report— Licence- holder JOHN FRYER, Office No. 23501, age 52, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top, turning grey) brown, cleaned shaved, eyes grey, scar left side of face, top of nose, right of forehead and two back of head, ring 2nd right finger ; wearing dark shabby clothes. A native of Newcastle. Sentenced at Newcastle Quarter Sessions, 5th July, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for warehousebreaking. Licenced 9th October last. E M b 334. Warrant issued. ESSEX. 14.— Brentwood ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 16s. 9d., 21st ult., by a worthless cheque, No. 691574, drawn on London and South Western Bank, Fenchurch Street, E. C., payable to F. W. Burtwell, Local Tradesman, drawn by Edward Thompson— EDWARD THOMPSON ( supposed false), age about 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache grey; wearing an old black coat, grey cap. Appearance of a mechanic; supposed a native of London. The cheque is from a book stolen in London on 9th ult. Was accompanied by A MAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 8 in.; shabbily dressed; who attempted to cash a cheque for £ 23, drawn on the same Bank. Warrant issued. 15.— Brentwood ( County)— For stealing from his lodgings. 4th and 5th inst., at Brentwood and East Horndon respectively, a blue serge jacket; 1 light plaid cap ; 1 white flowered wrapper; 1 white handkerchief, piece of red cotton in one corner; 1 small pocket book with red cover; a bunch of 5 keys; 1 Jubilee penny; 3 nearly new blue Oxford shirts; 1 brown tweed overcoat; 1 black frock coat— A MAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion, hair ( slightly bald on top), and eyes very dark, thin face, heavy moustache black, 1 right upper tooth missing, slight impediment in speech ; dress, black diagonal vest, brown mix- ture trousers, violet tie with white spots, brown kid gloves, shoes, and the stolen jacket and cap. He left behind, at Brentwood, a black diagonal morning coat; 1 metal watch, No. 3058, bwiss make, " Exhibition Prize Medals," engraved on inside case; 1 pair old gold cameo earrings, woman's head on each ; 1 pair gold links ; 1 celluloid watch case; 1 brown cloth cap. At East Horndon, a heavy dark melton overcoat, pieces of leather on sleeves. The diagonal morn- ing coat, brown kid gloves, and the melton overcoat were stolen, on lst inst., from Bow Road, London, E. He took lodgings and stated that he was permanently employed in the district, and absconded the following morning. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 16 — Southminster ( County).— For steal- ing £ 2 2s. 10£ d., 28th ult.— JOSEPH WRIGHT, age 38, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey; dress, light fustian jacket, light fustian or cord trousers and vest dark cap. A navvy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gibbons, Southminster. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 17.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing a gold chain pattern brooch ; 1 do. chain bracelet, with padlock attached ; 1 gold safety pin ; and £ 6 14s. 6d.— CARRIE AGNES IVY COLLINS, age 25 to * 8, height about 5 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl) light; dress, black jacket ( double- breasted), black skirt, brown fur necklet, green plaid Tam o'Shanter, frequently wears green glasses. A native of London. May seek employment as a domestic servant, or endeavour to stay at Salvation Army or other homes. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable McKenzie, Car- diff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 14th ult., a suit of livery, & c. ( recovered)— GILBERT PAR- SONS, alias HARMAN, age 23, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion rather pale, high cheek bones, long features, hair dark, clean shaved ; dress, supposed black coat and vest, light trousers, bowler hat, or grey coat, and dark trousers. Has served in the Yeomanry. Is accompanied by his brother, age 20, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build ; dress, dark striped suit, cap. Both were employed as painters until August last, when Gilbert obtained a situation as coachman. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Alton ( County).— For stealing 3 pairs riding breeches ( 1 pair buckskin, 1 Bedford cord, 1 fawn colour cloth); 2 pairs brown boots, size 8; 1 grey overcoat; 1 blue serge suit; 2 silver photo- graph frames; and a quantity of underlinen— JOHN HENRY MILLS, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar on chin and palm of left hand, tattooed both arms, one toe missing. A groom; native of Westminster. Is well known at Brighton. May seek employment at liverj' stables. Warrant issued. Information Supt. James, Alton. 20.— Bournemouth ( County).— For steal- ing. lst inst.. a coat ( recovered)— SAMUEL, alias JACOB MAJOR, a Jew, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache black, eyes dark, large nose and mouth, carries his head forward, slouching gait; dress, dark overcoat, grey mixture suit, black bowler hat or small grey check cap. Is fond of billiards. A tailor, well known at Portsmouth and Southamp- ton as " Black Sam." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Bishop's Stortford ( County).— Yor deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Bishop's Stortford Union— RUFUS ALFRED CLAYDEN, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, eyes brown, left little finger missing; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers, blue and white plaid neckerchief, dark cap. A labourer; native of Elsenham, Essex. Usually employed by market gardeners. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Martin, Bishop's Stortford. 22 — Hertford ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., at Cole Green, a pepper box; 1 silver watch, single case; 1 common watch chain; 1 satin hand- kerchief; 1 brass scarf ring; 1 pepper and salt colour jacket; 1 black and white check cap; 1 grey military shirt; 1 shaving brush; and a South African medal, " Private F. H. Petch" thereon, with two bars, Transvaal and Cape Colony— JOHN HENRY GROVES, alias DICKLES, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, suffers from stricture; dress, blue serge jacket, cord trousers, coloured necker- chief, navvies' cap with knob on top, heavy lace boots. Warrant issued. 23 — Hertford ( County).— For absconding from Herts Reformatory, Bengeo, 24th ult.— JABEZ ARTHUR KIMPTON, age about 16, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar left wrist, left hand, right elbow, and over left eye; wearing cord jacket, roll collar, lined calico, plated or brass buttons, cord vest, lined calico, khaki drill back, blue cloth Glengarry cap, trimmed black braid, surmounted with narrow red braid, worsted socks, cotton shirt, red and blue stripes, roll collar, red tie, strong lace boots nailed diagonally. ISLE OF WIGHT. 24. — Newport ( County). — For stealing between 13th and 18th ult., at Westminster, I. W., a brass pump— WILLIAM HALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, curl on forehead, slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, of military appearance ; dress, usually dark jacket, vest and cap, dark cord trousers, necker- chief. A labourer; native of Newport, I. W. Absconded lst inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ayres, Quay Street. New- port. KENT. 25.— Sandwich ( County).— For deserting his wife and 4 children— WILLIAM HOUSE- MAN, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, slight scar over left eye; dress, dark tweed suit, dark tie, muffler, fawn colour mackintosh, hard felt hat, light lace boots. A photographer; supposed a native of Blackpool, Lancashire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. 26.— Tonbridge ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— PELHAM METCALF, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, thin face, hair light; dress, dark suit, with thin light stripes, dark cap. Has been a ticket collector at Hastings and Maidstone Railway Stations. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Styles, Tonbridge. 27.— Dover ( Borough). — For stealing, 7th ult., 3 pairs boots ( recovered)— FREDERICK GILBURD, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, moustache light brown, eyes grey, addicted to drink; dress, brown suit and cap, grey covert coat, blucher boots. Absconded 27th ult. He orders goods to be sent to an ad- dress, meets the porter outside the address given, and takes the goods from him. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Knott, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Liverpool ( City).— For stealing, 10th ult., a horse ( recovered)— ALBERT BROUGH, alias YORKER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair brown, clean shaved, thin face, long nose, scars right hand; dress, old fawn colour long over- coat, navy blue trousers, black cap. Travels the country with shows and swing boats. Supposed a native of Attercliffe, Yorks. Warrant issued. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For failure to re- port— Supervisee JOHN WILSON, alias GEORGE WILSON, and GEORGE HILLIDGE, Office No. 1283- 01, age 47, height 5 ft. 4 § in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar left eyebrow, left cheek, first right and fourth left finger, large burn scar right leg. A fish salesman; native of Preston, Sentenced at Derby Quarter Sessions, 4th July, 1900, to 12 months hard labour, and 4 years super- vision for warehousebreaking. Convicted at Black- burn, Hull, Preston, and Scarborough. To be dealt with wherever found. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30.— Grantham ( County).— For obtaining 9s. by false pretences, 22nd September last— A MAN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark ( turning grey), short moustache and whiskers dark; dress, dark suit, white straw hat. A trav- elling photographer, had with him a camera and black oilcloth. He took photographs on the promise that they should be supplied within 14 days, and gave a printed receipt signed " W. Westoby, Willoughby, Notts." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cabourn, Grantham. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1903 THE POLICE GAZETTE PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 31.— F Division.— For forging and utter- ing a cheque on the London and County Bank, Bayswater Branch — Licence- holder WILLIAM CLIMPSON, alias WILLIAM HENRY CLIMB- SON, Office No. 2605- 99, age 4", height 5 ft. 9i in., slight build, stoops, complexion pale, hair brown, moustache dark, eyes grey, 2 moles back of neck, pigeon chested, of gentlemanly appear- ance, most plausible in manner, suffers from 32— K Division. — For stealing £ 165, 13th ult.— ARTHUR GEORGE MISTER, age 40 height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair and moustache ( curly) light, pointed nose, eyes blue; dress, brown jacket suit, light raglan over- coat, light cap, brown gaiters and boots. A acute asthma; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark check trousers, black Chesterfield overcoat ( silk facings), low turn- down collar, coloured silk neckkercliief, black hard felt hat. Has been convicted at Folkestone and Hastings. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. music hall manager; native of London. W. 3 GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 33.— Neath ( Borough).— For embezzlement — CHARLES JOHN PRICE, age 32, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion tawny, hair and moustache very dark, eyes ( short sighted) dark, wears gold rim glasses with wires over ears, may be growing a pointed beard, wears massive gold ring on one of right fingers, speaks Italian fluently, also French and Spanish; dress, dark grey suit, hard bowler hat, lace boots with square toes. Appearance of a foreigner. A wine and spirit merchant's canvasser and collector; native of Trelierbert, South Wales. May endeavour to leave the country, probably for the Congo, where he has formerly been. The above is from a photograph taken about 7 years ago, his moustache is now heavier. Warrant issued. When arrested, screws, rope, wedges, and other articles, used in ladder larcenies were found in their possession. GATTON, as a rule, works with one or more companions, but near London he has been known to work alone. Having selected a suitable house, he or one of his companions will watch the pre- mises day and night until they gain some know- ledge of the general routine of the household. In the meantime they ascertain where a ladder is most conveniently obtainable, carrying one from some distance if necessary, by means of which, upon a moonless night, they gain an entrance through one of the upper windows, choosing a lady's bedroom if possible. The time invariably selected for breaking in is while the occupants of the house are at dinner. If successful, or disturbed, they make good their escape to the nearest railway line, along which they work their way to London. GATTON and his companions have been known to take lodgings in the district in which they intended to operate. The information to hand is that GATTON at the present time is actively engaged in committing this class of offence.
