GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1903. VOL. XX., No. 2066. BEGUI. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE OAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprhension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engraver's charge will range from 5s. to 10i. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and rut warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen ' property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from stick publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be iri the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Pott Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Listsof all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it Will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division.— For embezzling £ 1 3s. 6d.— MATHEW NUNN, age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, large lips, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar left buttock; dress, brown coat and vest, light trousers, cap. A horsekeeper; native of East Bromley. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For obtaining £. 10 by false pretences— — HAYES, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, scar on left temple ; dress, black skirt, black velvet cape trimmed grey fur, black sailor hat. — EDWIN HAYES, age 48, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, stoops ; dress, grey lounge suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. Repre- sented they had taken a public house, and obtained the above amount from a person on the pretence of engaging her as a manageress. Warrant issued. 4.— P Division.— For stealing, 4th ult., a plain gold hunter chronometer repeater watch. No. 3502 or 11364, a gold graduated curb- pattern Albert and 40 franc piece, attached; 1 small oxidised match- box; and 6 £ 5 Bank of Eng- land notes— JULES TOURNADRE, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, speaks good English ; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat. A chef, native of Paris. Warrant issued. 5 — W Division.— For bigamy— THOMAS BRIGGS, alias BROWN, PINDLAR, and PINCHER, age 39, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, blotches on face, hair brown, eyes grey, top of right forefinger deficient. A crane driver; native of Woodford, near Thrapston, Northampton- shire. May be found on public works. Warrant issued. , 6.— IV Division.— For obtaining £ 43 15s. by fraud— S. H. RHODES, age about 45. height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes bluish- grey, large red lump right cheek, walks erect, of military appearance; dress, blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For falsification of accounts— ERNEST JOHN DOYLE, age about 34, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and small moustache ( curled at ends) dark brown, eyea brown, larynx very prominent, walks quickly with head slightly inclined downwards; dress, grey jacket snit, black hard felt hat, small horse- shoe pin set diamonds and sapphires. Carried a small Gladstone bag. A stockbroker's clerk; late of Cricklewood. Warrant issued. 8.— For stealing a cheque for £ 185, and other sums to a large amount — ALAN FRASER HAMILTON, age 23, height 5 ft. e± in., slight build, weight 7 stones 9 lbs., complexion fair, hair light brown, very small hands and feet, of good address; dress, black morning coat and vest, grey striped trousers, dark bine double- breasted overcoat ( sac back), patent leather lace boots with mouse colour antelope skin tops. BEDFORDSHIRE. 9.— Bedford ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— FRANK GILBERT, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, blue serge suit. A painter; native of Wooton, may seek employment as a labourer. Is a reservist of the 2nd Battn. Bedfordshire Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Qnenby, Bedford. A mason ; native of Port Tennant, Swansea. May be found working with steeplejacks. Absconded 9th June last. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon ; or to Sergt. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— Aylesbury ( County).— For sacrilege at Aston Clinton, and stealing a silver Communion bread plate, engraved; 1 silver paten ( recovered); 1 Sheffield plate flagon, coffee- pot pattern, height about 9 in., holds three half pints, small black wooden handle; and a grey cloth waterproof hand- bag, plated fittings on top— A MAN, age 45 to 55, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, sunburnt, hair, whiskers, and moustache brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, wears glasses when reading, speaks with Welsh accent, has a habit of biting the ends of his whiskers; dress, dark clothes and cap. A plasterer and fancy tile setter. Warrant issued. 13.— Crewe ( County).— For stealing, from his lodgings, a metal watch and silver chain ; 1 lady's long thin silver guard; 1 lady's silver chain with silver pencil pendant; 1 lady's silver watch ; 1 dark grey rainproof coat; 1 fancy vest — WILLIAM CARROLL, age il or 2?, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather slight build, complexion fair, hiir dark brown ; dress, dark serge suit with light stripes, greyish motor cap, and the stolen ooat. Pearson, Crewe. 14.— Middlewich ( County).— For embezzl- ing £ 6 Is. 6d., between 2nd and 17th ult.— WIL- LIAM KENT ARNOLD, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, large hands and feet, slight impediment in speech; wearing blue serge coat and vest, light cap, lace boots. A Post Office clerk ; native of Farndon, near Chester May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooper, Middlewich. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Chesterfield ( County).— For steal- ing 4s.. at Heath, 2nd inst.— HIRAM KNOWLES, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache, and eyes brown ; dress, dark grey check coat, light cord trousers. A native of Birdholme. Has served in the Grenadier Guards. May seek employment at waterworks or at collieries. WTarrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, County Police Office, Chesterfield. 16— Eckington ( County). — For stealing, from his lodgings at Holbrook, between 8th and 10th inst., a small silver Waltham lever watch and metal chain— THOMAS HEXTALL, alias FRED SMITH, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, long features, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar on bridge of nose ; dress, navy blue jacket and trousers, green plaid vest with red spots ( double- breasted, brass buttons), pepper and salt colour overcoat with velvet collar, black hard hat, brown boots. A native of Thornton, Leicestershire. Previously convicted at Prescot, Lanes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrew, Eckington, near Sheffield. DEVONSHIRE. 17. — Exeter ( City). — For obtaining, by fraudulent Post Office money orders, 21st ult., money and a lady's 5- stone diamond ring, 18 ct., claw setting, stock No. 417, private mark " L. M.," makers, " D. & F."; 1 plain gold match- box, about 2 in. square, with small ring for chain attachment; 1 plain silver cigarette case, about 3 in. by 2£ in., containing a gold- mounted amber cigarette tube, initials " S. M. & C."— A MAN, who gave the name of JOHN or R. LEA, age 27 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, rather thin features, prominent nose, heavy moustache dark; dress, dark lounge suit, bowler hat, some- times wears a brownish overcoat. He obtains money orders, and by a chemical process alters the amount to a larger sum, then calls on jewellers, selects articles, and in payment tenders one of the orders for more than the amount of purchase, and receives the balance. The orders he used here were issued at Edgware Road, London. He is also wanted for stealing a gold- filled keyless " Peerless " watch, No. 207934, 21st ult., at Ilfracombe, where he gave the name of ROBERT STEVENS, alias JOHN or R. LEA, and addresses at Edgbaston, Birmingham, and Talbot Road, London, N. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. injured. He called on secretaries and other officials of miners' lodges, and produced a certificate ( bear- ing the stamp of the Chopwell Lodge of the Durham Miners' Association) to show that he was out of employment. ESSEX. 19.— Brentwood ( County).— For obtaining 2 pairs Derby boots ( new), size 8, and 2 blue and white spotted neckerchiefs by false pretences, 5th inst., at Wickford, and for larceny ( lodgings)— JAMES MOORE, alias GEO. WILLIAMS, and SMALL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, bald on top, heavy mous- tache light, tattooed both arms; dress, brown jacket, dark vest and trousers, red tie, dark blue check shirt, " No. 11 " marked on front, dark blue cap, lace boots, tops cut off. A labourer; stated that he had served in the Royal Marines. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marden, Brentwood. 20.— Sauthend'On( County).— For larceny ( lodgings)— MARIE WILTON, or HIN- TON, age about 16, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( thick and bushy) auburn, eyes blue; dress, black skirt, white silk blouse, dark, loose- fitting jacket, tam- o'- shanter hat, cloth slippers with rubber bottoms, wearing small gold neck chain, gold locket attached. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. 21.— South minster ( County).— For lar- ceny— WILLIAM SIGGERS, age 18, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, round face, hair brown, eyes supposed blue; dress, black jacket and trousers, cap, lace boots. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gibbons, Southminster; or to Inspector Waterman. Maldon. FLINTSHIRE. 22.— Mold ( County).— For inflicting grievous bodily harm— SAMUEL PARSONAGE, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache light. A native of Sale, Cheshire. Hawks salt; had with him a brown horse, about 16 hands. May be found in the neighbourhood of Manchester. Warrant issued. £ 5 REWARD. 2 i.— Mold ( County).— For stealing, between 8th and 9th inst., at Sealand, a pair of brown golf boots, size 11, rubber studs on soles and heels ; 1 pair do., size 10 or 11, golf nails on soles and heels; 1 pair of black golf boots, golf nails on soles and heels; a number of cigars and cigarettes; and 3 lbs. of tobacco— A MAN, age 35 to 4U, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, long features, clean shaved, except moustache ; drees, old slate colour mackintosh, blue trousers, cap, heavy boots. Was carrying a bundle. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. W. R. W. Shand, Kingston House, Chester, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and the recovery of the property. Biggs, Stroud. 25.— Bristol ( City\— For embezzling £ 128 7s. 5d.— SAMUEL CLARE COOK, age about 24, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, carries his head slightly to the left side, well educated, walks quickly, of smart appearance ; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat. DURHAM. 18. — Durham ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences, at Edmondsley, 28th August last— A MAN, who gave the name of THOMAS WATSON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache ginger, left hand supposed 2Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing £ 17 17s., 30th ult.— ERNEST CLARKE, alias JOHNSON, age 23J, height 5 ft. 4£ in., com- plexion fresh, hair black, eyes blue, dots tattooed on right forearm; dress, navy blue serge suit, tweed cap, red tie with black spots. A painter; native of Southampton. Is a deserter from the 2nd Devon- shire Regiment. Warrant issued. 27.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing £ 3 from his lodgings, 5th inst.— JAMES WALLIS, alias WILLIAMS and THOMPSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar over each eyebrow, over right temple and front left thumb, prominent nose. A tailor; native of Liverpool. Previous convicted at Central Criminal Court and at Hanley. Is wanted elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, South- ampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 28.— Ross ( County). — For larceny, 22nd August last, at Llanwarne — CYPRUS GILES, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., thick set, complexion fresh, round face, hair sandy, eyes blue, scar left forearm and back of left hand, left forefinger deformed. Easterby, Burham," on off side— WALTER HUNTLEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved; dress, black jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, dark cap, heavy lace boots. A labourer; supposed a native of Dover. Had in his posses- sion a great coat, " Private G. Fox, 2nd V. B. Queen's, 4069," stamped thereon. Is accompanied by his wife, 2 children, and a collie dog. Warrant issued. 34.— Manchester ( City). — For larceny ( servant)— PERCY W. STKDALL, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, long features, hair and eyes ( large) dark, wears glasses, clean shaved ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, black bard felt hat, may be wearing a dark Chesterfield overcoat. Represents himself as a B. A. and tutor. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 35.— Wigan ( Borough).— For embezzlement — JOHN GROWDEN, age 22 to 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion pale, freckled and slightly pock- marked, hair ( inclined to curl) auburn, suffers from eczema on hands, stoops slightly when walking. A tobacconist's traveler; native of East Lanca- shire ; is fond of singing at public- house conceit rooms. Absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Wigan. CHESHIRE. 37.— Hyde { Borough).— For obtaining 12s. by false pretences, 31st August last— CHARLES EDWARD WINWARD, alias JOHN EDWARD THOMPfcON, Office No. 600- 02, age 45, height 5 ft. 6i in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( blind left) grey, clean shaved, scar right side of neck and left wrist, on left cheek, and front of throat. An agent; native of ^ Saddleworth. Is now of better appearance than shewn in portrait. See also Case No. 31, 15th August, 1902. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Danby, Hyde. Hamilton— CLEMENT MOSCRIP HAMILTON, age 61,' height about 5 ft. 10 in., well built, com- plexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache grey, active manner ; dress, light steel- grey jacket and vest, dark steel- grey trousers, grey tweed motor cap, bluish regatta shirt, small black bow tie, white turn- down collar, bluish- grey drawers and undervest, stamped " Forsyth, Renfield Street, Glasgow," carried an umbrella, light colour handle, gold mounted, " C. M. Hamilton, Con- tractor, Hamilton " engraved on band. Had in his possession a black morocco leather pocket- book, containing Bank notes, letters and papers ; also a brown leather purse with flap and button, containing money. A master brick- builder and contractor; native of Uppervvard, Lanark. He left < Sth inst. for Glasgow. Is known to gas managers in Scotland.
