POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 29, 1903. VOL. XX., No. 2026. 1. All communications for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment mtist be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engravers' charge will range from 5s. to 10s. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 6 LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than. Saturday morningThey must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment; and, the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. AYRSHIRE. 10— Ayr ( County).— For fraud, 11th inst.— LUCY GILL, alias LEWIS and STANLEY ( Scotch Prison Register, 149- 98), age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, aquiline nose, of good address; dress, short semi- sac jacket, black cloth dress, black astrachan necklet, black sailor hat, carried a black umbrella. Liberated from Glasgow Prison 21st February last; has also been convicted at Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Harrowgate, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 11. — Reading ( Burmigh).— For stealing from his lodgings, 14th inst., a pair of plaid trousers; 1 black serge vest; 1 gold pin, chased with forget- me- nots— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair dark brown; dress, grey suit, grey cap, lace boots. He took lodgings, and stated that he was employed by a local firm; left behind a parcel containing cabbage, etc. 12. — Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining credit to the amount of ill 3s. 7d. bv fraud, 28th ult.— W. GIFFORD, age 45 to 50," height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion, hair ( long and curly, turning grey), moustache and eyes dark, North Country accent; dress, grey check jacket, vest, breeches, and leggings, cap of lighter colour cloth. A butcher; he took a shop, was introduced as a customer to a wholesale butcher, obtained credit, and absconded. Is accompanied by a boy, age 11, complexion and hair dark; dress, old grey suit. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)— £ 2 REWARD. 13.— Windsor ( Borough).— For leaving his wife and 5 children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Windsor Poor Law Union— WILLIAM COOPER WARNER, age 41, height 5 ft. 6 in. complexion pale, hair light brown ( turning gray) moustache light, eyes grey, prominent nose, rather sharp features. A labourer; may be found on public works. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Board of Guardians, Windsor, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Warner. Grove ( County).— For stealin from his lodgings, a silver lever watch, white dial, gold hands, " Samuels, Acme, Manchester," on dial; 1 white metal chain; and lOd.— A MAN, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair and mous- tache dark, speaks quickly; dress, dark suit with faint white stripes, maroon silk neckerchief, dark brown peak cap, brown button boots. DORSETSHIRE. 15.— Sherborne ( County). — For stealing 4 silver spoons ( recovered)— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes ( large) light blue, square fore head; dress, dark dress with 3 rows of braid at bottom, dark grey jacket, dark felt hat, black veil, carried an umbrella. She takes lodgings, stating she is seeking a situation as cook, com- mits a larceny and decamps. Information to Supt. Simpson, Sherborne. ESSEX. 16. — Thorpe ( County). — For an offence under the Bankruptcy Act, 1883, at Great Clacton, between 13th August and 23rd Sep- tember, 1902— CHARLES OAKLEY BEARD, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., square build, slight mous- tache dark. A native of Herne Bay, Kent. Wan- ant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe. GL OUCES TERSHIRE. 17.— Cheltenham ( Comity).— For stealing, 16th inst., a grey doe- skin purse and £ 17 9s. 3d.— EDWARD AFFORD, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, slight moustache light, scar right thigh, " Affo " tattooed across right forearm, speaks with Norfolk accent, takes quick steps; dress, dark grey tweed suit, grey tweed cap, lace boots. A cabinet maker; supposed a native of Felixstowe; was invalided from the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. HAMPSHIRE. 18. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, 22nd inst., a 9 ct. gold Albert, 3 curb and 1 long link pattern; 1 gold pin, dia- mond shape, with raised knot in centre; and £ 5 10s. — A MAN, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and hair dark, moustache brown, bad teeth; supposed wearing dark tweed suit. He obtained lodgings, stating he was employed by Lipton, Ltd. Is identical with JAMES WALLIS, No. 16, ILLUSTRATED CIRCULAR, Series 63. ( See Case No. 11, 22nd inst.) Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 19.— Gosport ( O'nmtv), — For stealing a bicycle ( recovered) FRANK OSBORNE, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown; dress, bluish colour cord suit, cap, lace boots. He served as a bandsman on H. M. S. " Terrible," was dismissed from the Navy about years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. HER TFORDSHIRE. 20.— Bishop's S tort ford County).— For fraudulently converting £ 600 to his own use— CHARLES VANDYKE THORNEYCROFT, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion purple, hair ( thin on top), whiskers, and mous- tache sandy, usually dyes his hair brown, eyes grey, slightly bow- legged, of smart appearance; dress, light colour suit. A solicitor; native of Bishop's Stortford. Absconded 17th January last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Martin, Bishop's Stortford. KENT. 21.— Dover ( Borough). — For leaving his children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Dover Union— GEORGE DAVIS, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue; dress, brownish check suit. A ganger on public works; was last heard of at Pontypridd South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Knott, Dover. 22.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, 13th inst., 5 silver table spoons, marked " F. H. L."; 6 plated dessert do., marked " H."; 3 small plated forks, marked " H."; 2 large do., marked " H."; 2 silver tea spoons; 5 antique egg spoons, chased handles; 1 plated butter knife, pearl handle; and 3s. 9d.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in.; dress, dark grey coat and cap, old trousers may be wearing blue overalls. Information to the Chief Constable, Maidstone, 23. — Margate ( Borough). — For larceny ( bailee)— THOMAS WILLIAM HUDGELL, age 45 to 48, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) brown, blotchy sores on forehead. An auctioneer; he sells cheap jewellery, furniture, etc., for local tradesman, and absconds with the proceeds. Late of the All Gay Stores, Barking. Is well known at Morecambe Bay. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Ellerington Margate. 24 — Ramsgate ( Borough).— For stealing a harmonium ( recovered) — HARRY JACKSON, alias HARRISON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, slight moustache light; dress, dark tweed jacket, plaid vest, old dark or light check trousers, light cap, lace boots, nearly new. A rag and bone gatherer. Stated he had served with the King's Royal Rifles in South Africa; was employed at the gasworks as a labourer. Had with him an Edison " Gem " phonograph, painted black, gold lines, oval top case, nickel- plated trumpet, " Thomas A. Edison Tipe, 1 Gem," on front, about 9 in. square, 12 in. high, and records. Absconded 11th inst. May be accompanied by his wife, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build; dress, fawn colour three- quarter length jacket, grey skirt, pink tie, white sailor hat. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Kirkham ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 16th inst.— HENRY THOMPSON, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, full round face, hair in- clined to sandy, clean shaved; dress, black jacket, V shape vest with white spots, and large collar, black ribbed trousers, old black f- length overcoat, yellow canvas leggings, green, red and white tie. Stated he was employed by a firm of electrical engineers at Salford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. A.," and crest, ostrich head with feathers; 1 18 ct. gold fetter link chain, double Albert pattern, plain gold match box, initials supposed " N. A.," small keys, and sixpence attached; 1 small black gun- metal keyless watch, white dial, gold hands, spring on side, when pressed chimes hours and quarters; 1 do. black dial, gold hands and figures; 1 blue serge jacket suit, double- breasted vest, black bone buttons; 1 long light brown waterproof coat, side pockets, with openings at sides for riding, imi- tation silk lining on shoulders— JAMES LANG- FORD, age 25, height 5 ft. 7| in., complexion fresh, round face, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue, woman tattooed on right shoulder, can speak French; wearing the stolen clothing, black hard hat, lace boots, carried a brown knotted stick. Z0.— Wellington ( County).— For stealing £ 1 4s. 6d., 14th inst., at Horton— THOMAS BOOTON, age 24, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, small bald patch side of head; dress, dark jacket and vest, old cord trousers, red muffler, cloth cap with peak, strong lace boots. LEICES TERSHIRE. 27.— Leicester ( County).— For stealing, at Oadby, 14th inst., a watch and chain ( recovered)— WILLIAM BRADBURY ( supposed false), age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, red face, hair dark brown, large nose; dress, dark blue serge suit, brown overcoat, square top felt hat. Appearance of a groom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28.— Lincoln ( City).— For obtaining by false pretences ( worthless cheques), a horse ( recovered) — ABRAHAM DAWSON, alias ABRAHAM KELLETT, SAM BENNETT, " OLD ABE," & c., Office No. 723- 00, age 53, height 5 ft. 5^ in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar left side of forehead, centre of left eye- brow, on left thumb, and 2 back of left hand, bridge of nose has been broken. Has been con- victed at York, Leeds, Exeter, Wakefield, New- castle, Huntingdon, Pontefract, and Liverpool, of SUFFOLK ( East). ' il.— Halesworth ( County).— For highway robbery and indecent assault at Ilketshall St. John, 14th inst.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and moustache dark; dress, old brown velveteen coat with side pockets, dark vest with sleeves, cord trousers, check cap, hob nailed boots. Andrews, Halesworth. 32.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings, 21st inst., a silver Geneva watch, very old, piece broken off dial near figure 2; 1 metal button hook, " When in Derby go to Dicks for boots and shoes" thereon; and £ 1 2s.— A MAN, age 24 to 26, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., hair and moustache dark, scar on forehead, speaks quickly; dress, dark serge suit, black hard hat. He took lodgings stating he was employed by the Danish Dairy Company.
