All communications for insertion in the POLIOS GAZETTE, and all communi- cations relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR ob THE POLICE GAZETTE N « W SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 8. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 5. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be inserted at a cost of 7s. per portrait, and of 5s. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, unless the article is large or unusually intricate, when the engravers' charge will range from 5s. to 10a. A remittance of 5s. should be made in the first instance for cost of engraving sketches. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a personx must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of nori less rank than Superintendent; and if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. ATIONS . 7. Announcement! concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as far as practicable they are alphabetically arranged counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all ease i the officer signing the request for the insertion if any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which . nay result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as fo & e received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a to « ennj letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can onk be accepted on payment; and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— C Division.— For impersonating a Metropolitan Police Constable— A MAN, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, of smart appearance; dress, black overcoat, blue trousers, red tie, black hard felt hat, patent leather lace boots. He represented himself as Detective- Sergeant Mander, Scotland Yard. Warrant issued. 2.— D Division.— For obtaining a gold watch, demi- hunter, " No. 30542, 137 LO./ O/-" scratched inside case; and a gold Albert and locket, by a worthless cheque on the Ulster Bank, Belfast— G. PHILLIPS, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, aquiline nose, speaks with French accent, of Jewish appearance; dress, black frock coat, dark grey striped trousers, silk hat. Has in his posses- sion a cheque book, Nos. D 24801 to 24825. ( See Case No. 25, 27th March last.) Warrant issued. 3.— F Division.— For stealing 2 diamond crescent brooches; 1 gold neck chain, with diamond and turquoise heart attached: 1 do. with gold heart, set 3 diamonds in a shamrock leaf : 1 lady's gold watch; 4 ladies' gold rings ( 1 set pearl sur- rounded with diamonds; 1 half hoop set 5 diamonds; 1 do. set 3 diamonds and 2 rubies; 1 set 3 diamonds, gipsy setting): 4 gold bracelets ( 2 curb; 1 set diamonds and sapphires; 1 set tur- quoise) ; 1 gold safety pin, set turquoise; 3 French lottery tickets; 1 lady's brown crocodile purse, silver mounts; a £ 50 Bank of England note, No. 91701, dated 16th June, 1902; and £ 3 12s.— CARL SCHULZE, an Austrian, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark; dress, blue serge jacket suit, grey hard felt hat, patent leather boots. A waiter. Warrant issued. 4.— Division.— For stealing a lady's gold Geneva watch; 1 do. plain link necklace; 1 do. horseshoe brooch ( pin missing); 1 do. dress ring, set diamond in centre, ruby each side; 1 set of gold studs, horseshoe pattern; 1 pair gold sleeve links, ball pattern— HENRY WOOD, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, long features, hair dark; dress, dark blue jacket suit. Supposed a native of Leicester. Warrant issued. 5.— S Division.— Tot obtaining £ 10 by fraud— WILLIAM HARRIS, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion ruddy, hair light, red nose, prominent, speaks with North Country accent, walks erect; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, brown cardigan, greyish blue trousers, white neckerchief, hard felt hat, tan colour boots. An electrician; has worked at the New Empire Theatres, Leicester, Birmingham, Bolton, and Huddersfield, where he is well known. Warrant issued. 6. — X Division.- For embezzlement- HARRY WELLS, age 42, height 5 ft. 4 in, com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, grey serge suit, black overcoat, velvet collar, black hard felt hat. REGINALD BLOTT, late of Devonport Road, Catford, age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl) light, clean shaved, large feet; dress, grey lounge suit, hlack hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 8.— For making a false declaration with intent to defraud— LITTLE OGILVIE TELFER, late of Mayfield Road, Stroud Green, N, age 40, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, thin face, high cheek bones, hair and moustache dark brown, stoops slightly; dress, blue serge or dark brown jacket suit, black bowler hat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 10.- Ampthill ( County).— For stealing a gold curb chain, small pendant, with red stone in centre, attached; 1 white linen shirt; a bicycle pump and spanner— A MAN, name supposed SAMUEL CHARITY, or SOUTHWELL, age 26 or 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion sallow, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, eyes grey, hollow cheeks; dress, dark grey or slate colour jacket suit, narrow dark tie with light spots, black hard felt hat, military boots. A native of Upping- ham, Rutland. Stated he was employed in the Post Office Telegraph Department. Has served in the Army. Johnson, on the London and Provincial Bank, Erith Branch- JOHN JOHNSON, alias JOHN SLINGER, age 49, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, heavy moustache dark ginger, double chin, 2nd right finger bent, long scar on one left finger; dress, dark bluish check suit, fawn colour overcoat, mixture motor cap, usually wears a pin supposed made from a Jubilee half sovereign, also ring on left little finger; has in his possession a blue serge suit, 1 grey suit, 1 pair brown cord breeches, 1 pair pig- skin leggings, fancy vests, a leather- lined trunk, brass studded, a portmanteau, and a quantity of jewellery bought at Sheffield. DORSETSHIRE. 16.- Dorchester ( County).— For non- payment of £ 3 18s. fines and costs imposed for damaging ferns, and highway offences— HENRY CHOWN, alias JOHN BURTON, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion pale, hair brown, slight moustache sandy, eyes grey; dress, old brown coat and trousers. A fern gatherer; native of Hanley, Dorset. He travels with an old brown horse, and a dark cart, with white tilt. Is accompanied by his wife and 3 children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 17 - Dumfries ( County). — For stealing, 2nd inst, a bicycle; 1 silver Albert, curb pattern, silver badge with shield thereon, attached; 1 black leather purse or tobacco pouch; and £ 1 16s. 9d.— A MAN, who gave the names of JOHN JACKSON, C. ROBERTSON, and W. CUN- NINGHAM, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, of smart appearance; dress, brown tweed jacket, fawn colour breeches, khaki putties, white neckerchief, peak cap, lace boots. Information to Chief Constable Gordon, Dumfries. ESSEX. 18.— Chelmsford ( County).- For stealing, 15th March, a metal watch, metal chain fixed by a piece of hairpin, and key attached ; 1 blue serge vest, size 4, and a South African War medal, " Private John Hayes, No. 5161, 1st Essex Regi- ment," stamped thereon, with 3 bars ( Kimberley, Paardeberg, and Driefontein)— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, whiskers about 2 in. long, eyes blue; dress, dark jacket, wide light cord vest, dark brown cord trousers, red necker- chief, light cap, heavy lace boots. Had in his pos- session a discharge from the 1st Essex Regiment. He left behind a dark blue single breasted over- coat, with breast, 2 hip, and ticket pockets, red plaid lining, large bone buttons, velvet collar, tab of black Prussian binding, supposed stolen else- where. ( See Case No. 13, 20th March.) 1$.— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing, 9th ult., a gramophone and records ( recovered) — A MAN, who gave the name of CHARLES HARRIS, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, ex- tensively tattooed on both arms, of good address; dress, bluish grey suit, blue wrapper, hard felt hat, button boots. Is believed to have served in the Army. He calls at music sellers, hires a gramo phone for 2 nights, and asks that it may be sent to his lodgings, afterwards disposes of the gramo- phone and absconds. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Essex, Chelmsford. 20 — Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 4th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— ARTHUR E. WILLIAMS, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, long moustache light; drees, black diagonal morning coat and vest, light striped trousers, check peak cap, brown boots, wears a badge on coat and cap. He represented himself as an insurance agent. Warrant issued. 21.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 6th March, a silver watch, No. 95874; 1 silver curb chain; 1 dark cloth jacket, light canvas pockets inside; and 4s.— GEORGE HUNTER, alias SCOTTY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark. May be found employed as a navvy at sewerage or canal works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Southend- on- Sea. 22.- Colchester ( Borough).— For failure to report— Licence- holder BENJAMIN ROGERS, Office No. 106- 01, age 48, height 5 ft. 2£ in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar right of forehead, each eyebrow, bridge of nose, back of left thumb, and two base of right thumb. Sen- tenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 16th October, 1895, to 7 years penal servitude and 2 years Police supervision for fowl stealing. Released 20- 1- 03. YIV 764. Has also been convicted at Chelms- ford, Colchester, and Ipswich. Information to Chief Constable Midgley, Colchester. FLINTSHIRE. 23— Holywell ( County).— For stealing a brown leather handbag; 2 white shirts; and 6 collars— GEORGE , age about 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, pimples on face, speaks very little English. A waiter or boots; native of Berlin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Holywell. 2i.— Mold ( County). — For stealing rabbit skins— JAMES McDONALD, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache sandy; dress, brown jacket and cap, dark trousers. A rag gatherer; supposed travelling in the South of Wales. Is accompanied by a woman and two children. Warrant issued. 25 — Mold ( County). — For stealing a gun ( recovered)— JOHN JACKSON, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, black jacket, brown vest, blue trousers, blue neckerchief, brown cap. An ironworker; native of Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Davies, Mold. GLA MO RCA NSHIRE. 26.— Bridgend ( County). — For stealing* 3rd ult., at Bryncoch, g. gold chain, small links, dollar in centre as pendant attached— JOHP^ LEYSHON, age 25, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion pale, hair, moustache and eyes dark brown, heavy eyebrows ; dress, navy blue coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, dark muffler with white spots, navy bill ® cap, lace boots. A tramping labourer; had in his possession a bicycle ( supposed stolen). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davis, Bridgend. GLOUCES TERSHIRE. 27.— Staple Hill ( County).— For forging and uttering a note of hand for £ 2 10s., purporting to be issued by Symes & Co., Bristol, thereby obtaining a Postal Order for £ 1, No. 702710; 2 for 10s., Nos. 915202 and 915203, and stamps and cash to the value of 10s., at Filton Post Office, 20t> b inst.— A MAN, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair and moustache dark, of good address; dress, dark suit, bow tie, and cap. Stated he was an electrical engineer, and that he had recently returned from South Africa. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 28. — Bournemouth ( County). — For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Christchurch Union ALFRED JOHN HTJRLEY, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, thin features, hair brown, moustache light, eyes hazel, shot, flags, anchors, and 2 crosses left forearm, 5 crosses and star in centre, back left hand, star, wheel and anchor right forearm, bracelet right wrist, cross back right hand, scar left side of head. A labourer; native of Brighton. Warrant issued. 29.— Bournemouth ( County).— For non- payment of .£ 5 16s. bastardy arrears, and 10s. costs — BENJAMIN THOMAS FRANCIS MAR- SHALL, age 49, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, birth- mark left side of forehead. A traveller and com- mission agent for a firm of cabinet makers and upholsterers; may be found canvassing in South Wales. A native of Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 30.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For felony ( throwing vitriol), 14th ult. — HERMAN" BADAIRI, alias ARCHIBALD ROBERT JAMES HENDY, age 20, height 5 ft. 5£ in., round shoulders, slight build, complexion pale, hair and slight moustache dark, walks slowly and hangs head downwards, quiet manner, rather vacant look, appearance of a foreigner, is fond of stating that he is an American; wearing long dark overcoat, supposed astrachan collar, dark soft felt hat. Usually carries a loaded revolver. 31.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For desert- ing his five children, leaving them chargeable to the Parish of Portsmouth— HENRY JAMES CUSSE, age 42, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache auburn, eyes grey, A painter; was a Sergeant in the Royal Engineer Militia, Fort Victoria, Isle of Wight, and was dis- charged on 17th March last. May be found on public works or in casual wards. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 32. — Southampton ( Borough). — For failure to report— Licence- holder ALBERT DAVIS, alias JOHN JONES, Office No. 2148- 98, age 21, height 5 ft. 3J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, V- shaped scar bridge of nose, scar under right ear, on upper lip, and front right wrist, 3rd joint 2nd left finger deformed. Sen- tenced at Ipswich Quarter Sessions, 4th January, 1901, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 9th ult. bll. T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE. 3 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT ( continued)— ISLE OF WIGHT. 34.— Newport ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings, 2nd inst., a pair of new brown lace boots, size 7 ; 1 pair blue angola trousers, rather large; 1 grey cloth vest; 1 silver Geneva watch, open face, maker, " Peck, London," on dial; 1 gold gilt Albert, rather long links, with slight twist; and 12s. — GEORGE BAILEY, age 20 to 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved ; wearing long dark overcoat, yachting cap, heavy nailed boots. A labourer; had with him a bundle tied in a red handkerchief. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ayres, Quay Street, New- port. LANCASHIRE. 35.— Manchester ( Citu).— For obtaining Continental railway tourists' tickets by a worth- less cheque, 8th ult.— ALBERT MILLER, alias G. HOLMES, C. B. CUNNINGHAM, E. MORRISON, WALTER KELSEY, and POL- LARD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., well built, complexion fresh, swollen under both eyes, hair and stubby moustache black; dress, dark grey frock coat and trousers, dark tie, round gold diamond pin, sometimes wears a dark cap. He was in Brussels on 10th ult. and has in his pos- session the return tickets, also blank cheques ( Nos. 198476 to 198500 inclusive) on the London and South- Western Bank, Brighton. Warrant issued.
