POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1901. VOL. XVIII., No. 1870. BBGTJL 1. All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning person* whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 16/. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Eoery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of jiolice, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and. as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, mutt, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Edito- r notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. E. E. HENRY. Editor. A native of Kirkcaldy. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division.— For obtaining, 12th inst., by a worthless cheque, No. A289244, on the London and South Western Bank, Belgravia Branch, 6 pieces of brocade satin ( 30 yds. white, 25 yds. pale blue, 26 yds. yellow, 25 yds. mauve, 46 yds. pink mixture, 15 yds. pink)— JAMES BAULAND, alias ROBERT LEICESTER and W. H. BAUER ( supposed a German), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and eyes ( small) dark, speaks with American accent; wearing dark blue overcoat, black hard felt hat, sometimes wears a black frock coat and silk hat. He ordered goods and asked that they be for- warded to an address where he had taken apart- ments the same morning, gave the messenger who delivered them a cheque, and absconded with the property. Warrant issued. to 61, and a number of postal orders— GEORGE S. B. WEST, age 18, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, dark jacket suit ( tight fitting), sacque back overcoat, check cap or hard felt hat. A native of Richmond. May be accompanied by a youth, age 17, height 5 ft. 7 in. Absconded 27th inst, 7.— S Division « — For obtaining a quantity of bulbs by false pretences— G. B. ANDREWS,. alias G. BLATHERWICK, age 43, height 5 ft.. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, swinging gait, addicted to drink. He obtained the bulbs by stating that he was employed as a gardener by a wealthy Liverpool shipping mer- chant. Warrant issued. S.— High Wycombe { Borough).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— NORMAN WEBB, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache,, ejes brown, forearms very short, cannot raise hands above head, may have abscess scars on sides, walks quickly, well educated; dress ( sup- posed), blue serge suit, black tie, grey cap. A clerk. Was a Lieutenant of the Church Lads- Brigade. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High. Y. 273, Office No. 2252- 01, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald) black, clean shaved, eyes light hazel, scar on back, left hand and thumb, mole left cheek, dot left thumb, red birthmark left leg ; wearing black frock coat, silk hat. A native of Malta. A pedlar.— ISAAC GOLDEN BERG, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and beard dark brown, prominent nose; dress, dark over- coat and suit, black hard felt hat. A furrier. Jews. Warrant issued. 6.— J Division.— For stealing £ 90, in- cluding 7 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. 3 41755 CA MBRIDGESHIRE. 9.— Cambridge { Borough). — For em- bezzlement, between 20th May and 31st August last— SAMUEL STANTON, age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, full beard and moustache ( turning grey), short thick neck; dress, grey jacket suit, light grey overcoat, black square felt or silk hat- A bank clerk. II.— Matlock Bridge ( County).— For stealing a gold diamond ring, snake pattern, set 3 diamonds; 1 lady's gold ring, set 3 diamonds and 3 sapphires; 1 gold medal, dated 1898 or 1878, 14th October, " Presented to Mr. Otter by R. Fawcett for his gentlemanly manner and his good performances as an artist," name " Otter" in centre thereon ; and £ 10 15s.— LEWIS WIL- LIAM CREUSHAW, a negro, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair and eyes black ; wearing a long check overcoat, soft hat. States he is a native of America. Travels the country with a circus or show. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Matlock Bridge. ESSEX. 12.— Castle Hedingham ( County).— For assault on police, 15th inst. — REUBEN SHEARMAN, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., thick set, slightly round shoulders, stoops when walking, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes brown ; wearing grey cloth trousers and vest. A native of Steeple Bumpstead. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Wapling, Castle Hed- ingham. 13.— Romford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Guardians of Romford Union, 2nd ult.— HENRY' SHARPE, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, dark jacket, grey vest and trousers, black bowler hat. A journalist. Warrant issued. 14.— Romford ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings at Hornchurch, 6th inst., a lady's 18 ct. gold double bottom English lever watch, No. 6176, open face, gold dial chased with roses and tulips, steel hands, maker " Archibald Haswell, Elizabeth Street, Eaton Square," a lady's long gold chain with very small links, attached— A MAN, who gave the name of ST ACE Y, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache ( cut short) turning grey, eyes blue grey, of good address; dress, black jacket, dark grey vest and trousers, black tie with coloured stripes, black silk wrapper, dark cap. He represented himself as a naval pensioner, and stated he had been employed as a steward on the P. & 0. boats. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 15.— Colchester ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences— HORACE BEER, alias WILLIAM SMITH, age about 30, height 6 ft., stout build, complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) light brown ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light check trousers, brown overcoat with black band on left arm. A brick- layer's labourer ; native of Clacton- on- Sea. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. FLINTSHIRE. 16.— Holywell ( County).— For obtaining money by a worthless cheque — FRANCIS OLIVER, age 40 to 45, height about 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, beard cropped short; dress, grey jacket suit, yellow leather leggings, check cap. Had with him an overcoat. A native of Greenfield, near Holywell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Holywell. FORFARSHIRE. 17.— Dundee ( City).— For obtaining board, lodgings, and 10s., by false pretences, and uttering a forged cheque, thereby obtaining £ 7 18s. 9d.— WILLIAM A. TRYTHALL, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache light, large nose, usually wears glasses: dress, yellowish tweed suit, black bowler hat, carried a small brown leather hand- bag. A commercial traveller, lately employed by a cycle company at Wolverhampton, Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Dundee. GLA MORGA NSHIRE. 18.— Cardiff ( Borough). — For failing to surrender to his bail at the November Assizes, charged with cutting and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm— GEORGE SMITH, alias FETTER and JOHN SMITH, age 25, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes brown, teeth dis- coloured, mole on right side of upper lip, scar from bite on left cheek, cross flags and crown with scroll left forearm ; dress, dark brown suit, light check cap, light mackintosh. Has been travel- ling the country selling jewellery on commission. Formerly served in the Royal Artillery. Warrant issued. 19.— Cardiff ( Borough). — For stealing mineral waters— WILLI AM ANDREWS, alias BOXHALL and JACKSON, age about 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, thin features, hair and slight moustache brown ; dress, blue serge suit, double- breasted coat, dark grey overcoat, brown leggings, P. & O. cap. May be found at mineral water stores or stables. Is identical with W. C. Boxshall, Case No. 33, 12th October, 1900. Absconded 6th ult., accompanied by a woman, age about 27, slight build, hair brown, with curl on forehead; dress, black serge jacket, black skirt and sailor hat. Warrant issued. T. left, female, 2 lines, pierced heart, head of female, anchor, star, and rose right forearm, NELL and scroll back left, C. B. back right hand, old injury to right foot, left leg slightly wasted, ship on centre of chest. Sentenced at Hants Assizes, 24th June, 1899, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny ( person). Hopkins, Cheltenham. 21.— Staple Hill ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), £ 1 6s. and 2 pawntickets, 2nd inst., at Kingswood— ALFRED or ALBERT DRAPER, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache brown, burn scar left side of face; dress, black coat, light trousers, black hard felt hat. A shoemaker; native of Cirencester. Had in his possession a light coat and vest. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For fail- ing to report — Licence- holder FREDERICK SYLVESTER, alias JAMES KELLOWAY, Office No. 2857- 01, age 41, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, scar back of neck and on nose, both little fingers crooked, nose has been broken. A tailor. Sen- tenced at Surrey Quarter Sessions, 6th April, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for larceny. Licenced 17th October, 1901. P. T. X. 45. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing from his lodgings, 22nd ult., a gold signet ring, set white stone ; 1 lady's gold ring ( cracked), set black diamond, oval shape ; 1 wedding ring, set garnet, cracked and repaired— EDWARD STEWART, alias ALFRED SCOTT, MOORE and E. SWIFT, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft, 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, short moustache light, long thin face, sunken cheeks ; dress, grey morning coat and trousers, chocolate colour fancy vest with red spots, black bow tie with white spots, black hard felt hat. A street musician. Warrant issued. 24.— Southampton ( Borough).— For leav- ing his wife and family chargeable to the Common Fund of the Southampton Incorporation, 14th September last— TELFORD CHARLES FIELD, age 36, height about 6 ft., complexion fair, small sharp features, hair ( thick and wavy) dark brown, eyes brown. A yacht builder ; native of Hamp- shire. Warrant issued. Information, to the Chief Constable, Southamp- ton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Ledbury ( County).— For embezzling £ 62, 15th ult., FREDERICK NUNN, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, round face, high forehead, large mouth, clean shaved, small wart centre of nose, artificial teeth, of military appearance; dress, new grey suit, new brown overcoat, black hard hat, light boots. Supposed a builder. Has been employed as a farm bailiff. Stated he was a farmer in Cambridgeshire up to 1898. Is believed to have a considerable amount of money in his possession. Absconded 24th ult., stating he was going to Ireland for the purpose of purchasing horses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury, or the Chief Constable, Shire Hall, Hereford. KENT. 26.— Tonbridge ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— BOB BEANEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10^ in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes blue; dress, pepper and salt colour coat, vest, and cap, cord breeches, box- cloth gaiters, black Raglan overcoat. Warrant issued. 27.— Tonbridgo ( County).— For day poach- ing— HARRY COOPER, age 24 or 25, height about 5 ft. 6^ in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes hazel; dressed as a bricklayer's labourer; native of Southborough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Styles, Tonbridge. 28 — Canterbury ( City). — For stealing, between 11th and 12th inst., a cash box containing 2 £ 5 Canterbury Bank notes, Nos. 7399 ( since cashed) and 7406; a cheque, No. 268462, on Messrs. Hammond's Bank, Canterbury branch, for £ 1 4s. 6d., made payable to " Self " and drawn on Lieut. McTagart'saccount; and about £ 2— EDWIN SULLIVAN, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, 2 flags, sailor and tombstone left forearm, 2 scars on head; dress, dark suit and cap, black bow tie. A native of Beverley, Yorks. Is a private of the 19th Hussars, and feather- weight champion of the Army and Navy; was employed as waiter in the officers' mess. May be accompanied by a woman, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair ( curly) dark, worn over ears; dress, light three- quarter jacket, black skirt, black sailor hat. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canterbury. 29.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing a black gelding cob, 14 hands, age 10 years, long coat, white legs, long mane, short tail; a set of black leather harness, white metal plates with heart crest; and a costermonger's cart, long body, small stout wheels, may have " Swaffer, Folkestone," thereon— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and small moustache light; wearing dark grey overcoat and cap, old boots. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Knott, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 30.— Ormskirk ( County).— For embezzling £ 7— FRANK GEORGE ( supposed false), age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes grey, of good address, speaks with London accent; dress, blue serge jacket suit, hard felt hat, brown shoes. Had in his possession 2 overcoats, 1 of greenish colour, other supposed light brown. Frequents theatres and music halls. A native of London. Was employed as agent and canvasser for sewing machines, jewellery, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 31.— Widnes ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., a tin box, containing 2 blue black serge jacket suits, black bone buttons, red striped lining, collar on 1 vest; 2 silk handkerchiefs, with green and red stripes— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ; dress, navy blue jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, dark cap, heavy lace boots. Information to Supt. Keighley, Widnes. 32 — Manchester ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder WILLIAM JOHNSON, alias OWEN REYNOLDS, THOMAS CONNOR, OWEN CONNOR, and JOHN SMITH, Office No. 2361- 01, age 40, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, scar corner left eye and bridge of nose, mole right eyebrow and left of neck, left little finger slightly contracted. A locksmith. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 17th May, 1899, to 3 years penal servitude for warehousebreaking. Licenced 31st August, 1901. I. U. Z. 614. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Wigan ( County).— For stealing Postal Orders, value £ 6 6s., at Hindley, 28th September last, and for obtaining credit by false pretences, lst ult.— DOCTOR JAMES JOSEPH DEIGH- TON, PATRICK DEIGHTON O'DONNELL or BARROW, age 35, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair black, both arms tattooed' including skull and cross- bones on one, also tattooed on back and chest; usually wears black frock coat, silk hat. Is fond of fishing. Has been a ship's surgeon. Frequents theatres. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cocker, County Police Office, Wigan. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 31. — Wellingborough ( County). — For obtaining £ 1 8s. Id. by false pretences, from the United Society of Journeymen Curriers— A MAN, age 23 or 21, height about 5 ft. 4 in , complexion fresh, full round face, hair brown, slight mous- tache dark; dress, check suit, dark covert over- coat, light check cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Alexander, Welling- borough. NORTHUMBERLAND. 35.— Berwick- on- Tweed ( Borough).— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings by false pretences— JOHN WILSON ( supposed false), age 34 or 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark Drown, slight side whiskers, eyes hazel, rather large head and mouth, scar between one thumb and forefinger; dress, black coat and vest, light striped trousers, large check peak cap. Appearance of a groom. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Berwick- on- Tweed. OXFORDSHIRE. 36.— Oxford ( County).— For stealing, 22nd inst., a safety bicycle," The Arsenal," 27 in. frame, red Clincher tyres, plated rims, free wheel. 90 gear, flat handle bars, old lamp— EDWIN PRICE, age 26, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, carries his head forward, anchor with twig on each side on front of chest, Bert Grace tattooed on back of left fore- arm ; wearing uniform of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry, from which he is a deserter. Supposed a native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxford- shire, County Police Office, Oxford." 37.— Oxford ( City).— For stealing ( bailee), 28th ult., a bicycle ( recovered), G. DARBY, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair and moustache dark. Sup- posed recently employed at a Music Hall at Lincoln. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Oxford. STAFFORDSHIRE. 38.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing 2s. from a child, 16th inst.— A WOMAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in.; wearing black jacket, short fur, large green hat, turned up at front, trimmed green or blue ribbon. She took to the manager of a firm of grocers a letter, which contained a crossed cheque on Messrs. Baring Bros. & Co.' s Bank, 8, Bishopsgate St. Within, dated " Carlton Club, Pall Mall, Novr., 9th, 1901," drawn in favour of Mrs. Mary Grant, or order, for £ 14 by Lord Beaumont. The cheque was written on a half sheet of note paper, a letter was attached pur- porting to be from the Mother Superior of a Convent, stating that one of the ladies at the convent had received the cheque, and asking that it may be cashed.
