All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons uhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the. POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken won them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated, o. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for striovs offences, and engravings of stolen property will be. inserted at a cost of 15/. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant, is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the rase may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged hy counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will Ir wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than twon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not lati- r than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. E. R. HENBT, Editor. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This m. iy often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Brampton Union — WILLIAM BENNETT, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., complexion sallow, hair auburn, eyes blue, slight blue mark supposed over left eye ; wearing jacket suit, sometimes a lap coat, soft felt hat, of smart appearance. A shoemaker ; native of Hexham, Northumberland. Has worked at various towns in Northumberland, Yorkshire, Berwickshire, and Scotland. Warrant issued. 11.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Brampton Union— HENRY YINELL, age 49, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair brown, eyes ( squints left) hazel. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Eckington ( County).— For assault on police and an offence under the Poaching Pre- vention Act, 12th inst., at Whitwell — JOHN GREAVES, age about 40, height 6 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, hair turning grey, moustache light. — RICHARD SAVAGE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair brown, moustache dark. A collier. Both are notorious poachers. — WILLIAM SMITH, alias LALSE, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, moustache light; dress, light tweed coat, brown trousers, peak cap. A collier; native of Fir Vale, Yorks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Talbot, Eckington. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Devonport ( Borough).— For stealing £ 2— JOHN HY. COLLIER, age 49, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, thin features, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes ( sunken) light blue, 2 cut scars about the size of a threepenny piece back of head, burn mark about the size of a shilling on shoulder. A labourer or navvy ; may be found on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. DURHAM. 14. — South Shields ( Borough). — For stealing, between 1st and 29th April last, £ 21 8s. 6d.; 1 white flannel petticoat; 1 pink striped cotton do. with frill; 1 red and black striped blouse; 1 night dress, marked " J." or " D. J. Riddley"; 1 white cotton table cloth — A WOMAN, age about 35, tall, rather stout build, com- plexion swarthy, hair dark ; dress, red cape with fur around neck, red dress with white spots, red felt hat. A gipsy fortune- teller, hawks lace. Was accompanied by other gipsies who had with them a grey horse and van. Warrant issued. 15. — South Shields ( Borough). — For stealing ( bailee), 26th April last, a watch ( re- covered)— HARRY JAMES JARVIS, age 43, height 5 ft. 4j in., com]> lexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ginger, crooked nose, eyes blue; shabbily dressed. A jobbing watchmaker. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. 16.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For larceny ( bailee), uetween 2nd and 9th inst.— RONALD B. STONE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair and slight moustache dark, of smart appearance, turns his toes outwards when walking ; dress, black jacket suit, black hard felt hat. He was employed by a London fish salesman to purchase fish for him to the amount of £ 70 4s. 9d., and has not accounted for same. Previously employed on the Great Northern and Great Central Railways. Absconded 10th inst., accompanied by his wife, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, black skirt, jacket, and hat, sometimes wearing a grey jacket. ESSEX. 17.— Braintree ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., a youth's new navy blue suit, piece of crape on arm ; 1 pair dark trousers, with white stripes ; 1 lady's black straw sailor hat; 1 white silk tie; 1 lady's black jacket— JENNY RUSSELL, alias ALICE HAZELDINE, age about 40, height 3 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion, hair and eyes dark, full face ; dress, pink blouse, dark or black skirt, black straw sailor hat, old low shoes. Stated she was a native of Northampton. Is tramping the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Terry, Braintree. 18— Latchingdon ( County).— For stealing, 9th inst., from the barge Faith, at Burnham, 1 pair dark cord trousers— FREDERICK VINCE, age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, 2 scars on right forearm, 1 on left forearm ; dress, dark grey jacket and vest, stolen trousers, dark grey cap. A native of Tillingham. Is a deserter from the Essex Regi- ment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Halsey, Latchingdon. £ 1 REWARD. _ 19.— Maid on ( County).— Forstealing( bailee), 13th inst., a " Sunbeam " bicycle, No. 33036, front tyre brake, mudguards, Carter oil bath gear case, Clincher tyres— A MAN, who gave the name of WILLIAM ELS 1 ON, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, supposed clean shaved ; dress, dark short coat and vest, light brown trousers, black soft felt hat, brown shoes. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Lewis Sydney Hicks, High Street, Maldon, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the above, and the recovery of the bicycle. Information to Inspector Waterman, Maldon. 20.— Thorpe ( County).— For obtaining a bicycle by false pretences, 1st inst. ( recovered)— JOHN TAYLOR, age 19, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, several pimples on face ; dress, dark cloth jacket suit, white sweater, blue cloth P. & O. cap. A native of Tendring. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Thorpe. 21.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing £ 16 — PHILI1' MILLARD, alias HORATIO LAWRENCE, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair ( wavy) dark brown, heavy moustache brown, eyes ( full) dark, wears gold rimmed glasses, carries his head to the left, indented scar ( size of a sixpence) on right cheek near mouth; dress, grey cashmere suit, black bowler hat, Oxford shoes. HER TFORDSHIRE. 22.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— ROBERT BAKER, age 42, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, scar right side of nose, bow legged ; dressed as a labourer. A native of Wigginton, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hemp- stead. 23.— St. Albans ( City).— For abandoning their 2 children on or about 3rd inst.— JOHN CLARK, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in.; dress, black jacket, blue trousers, hard felt hat. Travels with a scissors grinders' barrow, painted green.— MARTHA CLARK ( wife of above), age about 35, short; dress, black dress and jacket, white boat- ing hat. Had with them a boy and 2 girls, ages 7, 5 and 2 years respectively. Warrant issued. ISLE OF ELY. 25.— Ely ( County).— For stealing, 15th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— THOMAS ANTHONY, age about 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved, eyes dark ; dress, light grey coat and vest, dark grey trousers, dark soft felt hat. Roythorne, Ely. 26.— March ( County).— For shopbreaking, 14th inst.— TWO MEN, 1st, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair ( cut short) brown, clean shaved, may now be growing a beard; dress, brown jacket and vest, dark trouseis, neckerchief, thin shoes or slippers. A native of St. Neots, Hunts ; 2nd, age about 23, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, scars on neck ; dress, dark clothes and cap. Information to Supt. Nixon, March. A warehouseman or agent.— JOHN JEFFERIES, age 60, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair, beard, moustache, and eyes grey, wears glasses; dress, old dark clothes. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder RICHARD HILL, alias SAXE BRENNAN, Office No. 1360- 01, age 41, height 5 ft. Of in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar left eyebrow, left forearm, left cheek, right forearm, right side of neck, and on forehead. A native of Salford. Sentenced at Man- chester Assizes, 22nd November, 1892, to 7 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 21st May last. K. S. 921. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. LEICES TERSHIRE. 29.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing £ 20, 13th inst.— JOHN THRELFALL, age 16, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fresh, scurvy, hair brown ; dress, dark grey jacket suit, dark cap, heavy lace boots. A milk boy; native of Blackburn. Had with him a bicycle. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. MONTGOMER YSHIRE. ' AO— Newtown ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings, and money by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of WEBSTER, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very dark, thin features, rather large mouth, hair and moustache black; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark mixture cloth trousers, rather long dust coat, grey cap, wearing an imitation gold chain, had in his possession an imitation gold seal, a plough and the words " God speed the plough " engraved thereon. He represented that he was employed by a firm of artificial manure manu- facturers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Mont- gomeryshire, Newtown. NORFOLK. 31 — Great Yarmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a lady's silver Geneva watch, flowered back and face ; 1 small silver Geneva watch, dark face; and £ 10 10s.— GEORGE PICKERING ( supposed false), age about 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion pale, hair brown, clean shaved, teeth decayed ; dress, brown dust coat, black suit ( tight fitting trousers), black tie, black hard felt hat with broad brim, brown canvas shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Parker, Great Yarmouth. PEMBROKESHIRE. 32.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County). — For deserting his 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the funds of the Pembroke Union— SAMUEL NEIL, age about 30, height about 5 ft, 6 in., complexion fresh, round features, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, blue cup scar on fore- head, several front upper teeth deficient, of smart appearance. A native of Birkenhead. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Haverford west Castle. SOMERSETSHIRE. £ 3 REWARD. 33.— Weston- super- Mare ( County). — For stealing a Kodak camera ( recovered)— FANNY JACKSON, alias FODEN and NURSE NEARY, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, left forefinger deficient, usually well dressed. A native of Salford, Lancashire. Has been previously con- victed. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Weston- super- Mare, by whom the above reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Jackson. TUESDAY, JUNE - 249, 1901. SUSSEX ( East). 35.— Hastings ( Borough).— For misappro- priation of trust monies — FREDERICK ATKINSON, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, short neck, complexion fair, full face, hair ( bald on top), beard, whiskers and moustache light brown, weak voice; dress, light grey suit, black felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable Hastings. 36.— Hastings ( Borough). — For stealing £ 10— PAUL HOFFMAN, a German, age 20 to 24, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, prominent nose, bad front teeth ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat. May seek employment as a house porter, coach- man, or steward. ( See Case No. 70, 12th April last.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Hastings.
