POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1901. VOL. XVIII., No. 1810 E GrUL 1. All announcements for ituertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed, to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to he thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must, be given, and, the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will he inserted at a cost of 1oj(. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of tin officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against, him, the requisition must be signed I y the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIONS. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to I e inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, fur insertion in the • next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than iwon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morninq. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, an! accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, cither at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. SPECIAL NOTICE. In certain cases questions have arisen as to the payment for photographs applied for by Police Forces under Home Office circular of 15th March, 1897. The Registrar of Habitual Criminals is therefore authorised by the Secretary of State to say that, in any ordinary case, a photograph is not necessary to enable his Department to identify a prisoner, the measurements and finger prints being sufficient for the purpose ; but if a photo- graph is applied for, or if, in any rare case, it should be required to complete the identification, the cost will be charged to the Police Force interested. Rudolph pure coin" on back; 2 small round silver dessert dishes, plain bottoms, open worked edges, stands on 3 small knobs ; 1 small silver heart shape sweet dish, plain bottom, open worked edge, small handle at end; 1.2 doilies ( 6 pink, 6 green, all feather stitched)— WILLIAM ALFRED GRIF- FIN, alias NELSON, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, wart on back of left hand ; dress, black jacket guit, black overcoat, black tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Shoreditch, London. 2.— F Division .— For obtaining a brown leather portmanteau ; 1 do. case ; 1 do. kit bag; and £ 3 Is. 6d., 10th ult., by a fictitious cheque on the London and Suburban Bank, Ltd., 22 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, W. JACKSON, a, lias BARON MASSUL, age 38 to 40, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair light, large scar left side forehead ; dress, dark grey Raglan coat, dark green jacket, yellow flannel vest with blue stripes, dark brown trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For obtaining £ 30 by false pretences-.) AMES STORRIE ANDERSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved, eyes brown, impediment in speech: wears a light drab covert coat and black hard felt hat, sometimes a dark overcoat and silk hat. A native of Aberdeen. Warrant issued. 4.— S Division.— For stealing £ 40 10s. — BERT KIMBEK, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, large feet, slightly bow- legged, teeth discoloured ; dress, dark jacket suit, brown tweed cap. A native of Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office. New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Wokingham { County).— For stealing ( bailee), 8th ult., a two- wheel truck ( recovered) — A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey; dress, long dark cloth coat and trousers, black hard hat, heavy lace boots. A rag and bone gatherer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Molsher, Wokingham. 6.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 27th ult., a pair of boots ( recovered)— L. BROWN- SWORD, age 40, height 6 ft., stout build, blotchy face, hair and moustache brown; dress, brown coat and vest, blue trousers, black bowler hat. Had with him a small black bag, initials " L. B." or " L. C. B." thereon, containing a blue suit and fawn colour hat with broad brim, which he may be wearing. Was ^ recently discharged from the Royal Northern Reserve Regiment. CHESHIRE. 7. — Runcorn ( County). — For obtaining 9s. 6d. by false pretences, 22nd ult., at Grappenhall — THOMAS MONKS, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, black jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, blue guernsey, red scarf with black spots. A native of Warrington. Warrant issued. 8.— Runcorn ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult., 1 large basket; 4 half- pint cut glasses; 1 tea service, pink and white ( 20 pieces); 1 pocket knife, copper ring at end ; 2 white aprons; 1 grey shawl; 1 blue silk handkerchief; 1 cord vest, double- breasted, pearl buttons— SAMUEL LOMAS, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, speaks with London accent; dress, dark guernsey, cord trousers, brown peak cap, clogs. A boatman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pearson, Runcorn. DURHAM. 9.— Durham ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 22nd ult., £ 2, a silver cigarette case, initials J. B. S. engraved thereon, 1 black cord jacket and vest, in pockets three carpenters dis- charge certificates in the name of George Bernard Smith from the ships Angerton, Craigneuk, and Jeranos, a testimonial from David Burn, Blyth, and for obtaining food and lodgings by false pre- tences from 20th to 22nd ult.— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( brushed over forehead) and slight moustache, light; spoke with southern dialect, bracelet tatooed on both wrists, J. R. or J. H. back of left hand ; dress, the stolen jacket and vest, light trousers, black tie, dark cap, strong lace boots with square toes ; stated he had obtained work in a timber J ard. FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1901 11.— Southend- on- Sea { County).— For stealing ( bailee) a " Singer" diamond frame Model Luxe bicycle, Dunlop tyres, Westwood rims, brake and mudguards, about 22 in. frame, Singer divided rubber pedals, recently enamelled and plated STOCKWELL, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, thin features, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, light overcoat, dark trousers and cap. A native of London. Warrant issued. 12 — Southend- on- Sea { County).— For stealing a bicycle, diamond frame, Acles fittings, open head lugs, Wrampton twin roller chain, Westwood rims, Warwick covers back,. Dunlop front wheel, wide flat handle bar, indented in centre, enamelled black — A. HARRIS, age IS, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A native of London. Warrant issued. 13.— Southend- on- Sea { County).— For stealing, 2lst ult., a black Russian gelding pony, aged, 13 hands, hog mane, three- quarter tail, patch of white on withers, has been clipped from trace line to knees and hocks ; a square- built governess car painted reddish- brown and varnished, brass cap missing from off- side wheel, ash shafts ; and a set of brass- mounted harness— Licence holder JAMES PARNELL. alias GAYTON, WOODS, BOND and DARNELL, Office No. 1818- 00, age 59, height 5ft - 1 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, E. ( by trick), a safety bicycle, diamond frame, black enamelled, pneumatic tyres, bent handle bar, electro- plated, cork handles with black tips, rubber pedals, new tube in back wheel, electro- plated cranks, iron hoop around handle bar shaft to fit in socket and projects about a quarter of an inch, spindle of back wheel projects, no mud- guards— J. 11. JONES ( supposed false), age 20 to 22, height 5 ft. 5 or G in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; dress, dark serge suit, green and red muffler, small black and white plaid cap, lace boots. Keighley, Widnes. 20.— Liverpool { City).— For an assault on a postman, 27th March, and stealing a mail bag ( re- covered), containing letters & c.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. G or 8 in., well built, complexion fair, hair light, moustache reddish; dress, blue serge jacket suit, sailor's knot stiiped tie, hard hat. Appearance of a clerk. A cheque which was in one of the stolen letters was subsequently presented for payment and signed '• H. Williams." Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. ( by trick), 24th ult.— IOHN BUSWELL, alias COUNCILLOR, and TOWNEY, age about 5'), height 5 ft. 10| in., slight build, square shoulders, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes grey, scar on right temple, stoops when walking, usually carries a stick ; dress, dark coat suit, hard felt hat,— WILLIAM PYERS, alias PYE, age 42 to 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., thin face, red anil blotchy, long moustache light, stoops when walk- ing, wearing a three- quarter length dust coat, and hard felt hat; a native of Manchester. KENT. 10.— Chatham { County). — For stealing a gold albert, endless pattern, gold- mounted tiger's claw pendant ; 1 pair spectacles, gold rims ; 1 gold pin, set stone ; 1 long silver neck- chain ; 1 silver watch, Swiss make ; I silver albert, 3 large links and 4 small link pattern, seal with red stone one side, green the other, attached ; 1 pair gold pleeve links joined with 4 small links. A MAN, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, hair and moustache light brown ; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, hard felt hat, button boots, wore a double- gold albert with pendant in centre. Brooks's saddle, £ in. lug, high frame— WILLIAM SMITH or FEATHEKS, age about 20, height about 5 ft. G in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes blue ; dress, dark jacket and vest, old drab colour trousers, faded blue cap, army boots. Supposed a native of Leeds. OXFORDSHIRE. 25.— Oxford { County). — For stealing, 14th ult., at Headliugton, 2 livery coats; 1 do. vest; 1 chocolate colour livery overcoat, silver plated buttons, crest " a spread eagle on coronet" ( re- covered); 1 black cloth overcoat; 1 blue serge jacket— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey; dress, long dark cloth coat, 2 vests ( 1 black cloth, 1 fustian), cord trousers, grey cap, heavy lace boots, may be wearing a black hard hat. A rag and bone gatherer. Is identical with MAN, Case No. 3, 19th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxford- shire, Oxford. SHROPSHIRE. 26.— Pontesbury { County).— For attempted rape, 10th ult., at Ford — CHARLES LEWIS, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, round face, hair ( curly in front) and eyes brown, small moustache, slightly lame ; dress, blue serge or drab suit, peak cap, brown leather leggings, brown shoes. A groom; native of Chavel, near Shrewsbury. May be found working as an ostler at a public house. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elcock, Pontesbury. ~ 1— Whitchurch { County).— For stealing, 18th ult., 4 rabbits and a black cloth morning coat— Expiree HENRY PUGH, Office No. 2728- 99, age 72, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, white moustache, smart active appearance, D. D. tattooed left side, right wrist deformed, palm right hand contracted; dress, blue cap, long brown cloth overcoat ( velvet collar), dark striped trousers. Sentenced at Chester County Sessions 2nd January, 1899, to 9 months hard labour for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Edge, Whit- church. STAFFORDSHIRE. 2S.— Burslem ' County).— For obtaining 3s. by false pretences, : 50th ult.— J. H. WALKER ( supposed false), age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., hair ( turning grey), moustache and short beard dark, eyes dark, wears glasses ; dress, dark overcoat, dark jacket suit, bow tie, boiler end hat. Stated he was an agent for the " Sheffield and District Football Tissue," and that he would wire half- time and full- time results of football matches. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 29.— Lichfield { County). For obtaining 10s. by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the name of HARRY JACKSON, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, several front upper teeth missing ; dress, dark brown or grey suit and cap, grey covert overcoat. He called at a house and represented to the governess that her mistress had promised the amount as a subscription to a cricket club. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Lichfield. SUSSEX ( East). 30.— Brighton { Borough). — For stealing £ 12, 21st ult,— JOSEPH JOHN CHARLES 1IASKOW, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes blue, mole right ear, cut scar on throat; dress, black lounge jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, black overcoat, silk facings, blue tie with white spots, hard felt hat, lace boots. A porter, native of Edinburgh. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Carter, Brighton. 31.— Eastbourne { Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) about 28th March, 1 blanket ; 1 bolster ; 1 fender ; 4 bedroom chairs ; 1 mahogany frame easy chair, covered American leather ; 1 cocoanut door mat ; 1 patent bordered tapestry carpet ( suppose rose pattern), about 4 yards square ; 1 do. ( cut in half); 1 pair sheets; 3 electro- plated dessert forks ; 7 do. spoons ; 6 do. table forks; 4 do. table spoons ; 9 do. teaspoons, some of the plated articles may be marked with a small " T"; G whitehandletableknives— GEORGE FLETCHER COMAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark brown, sharp features, small eyes, slightly deaf and lame ; dress, usually grey suit, black and white plaid cap, brown boots. Has been an insurance agent. Absconded about 29th March. Supposed accompanied by his wife, age about 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., hair light; dress, usually red costume and black hat, and daughter, age about 18, and son, age about 14.
