65 - ZZ- 7 POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1901. VOL. XVIII., No. 1798. REGrUL 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property urill be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 1 as. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTION S. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons toJ> e apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Aew Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. • R. ANDERSON, Eduor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For obtaining by false pretences 27th September last, an " Encyclopaedia Britannica" in full Morocco binding, and a revolving book case — MICHAEL CUMMINS, aged 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes grey, flesh mark on right side. A marine engineer ( 1st class certificate No. 25003) ; native of Milford, Pembroke. Warrant issued. 2.— B Division.— For stealing, 8th inst., a long gold muff chain, fitted with diamond in long flat links ; 1 talisman pendant, large diamond with large drop shape carbuncle attached, gold link connecting the two stones, gold safety hoek fastening ; 1 lady's gold keyless watch, size of a shilling, diamonds set around edge of dial, fitted with 2 small safety chains ; ; 2 gold heart- shape lockets ( 1 large, 1 small), both plain cases, photo graph of a military officer inside each, " Moe" engraved on one; 1 plain gold pencil case, flat, " Belle " engraved thereon ; 1 gun- metal cigarette case, " G. P." in monogram in gold letters thereon, set turquoise on sides, 1 used as a press fastening; 1 silver flask, " Godfrey " written thereon, 1 side hollow ; 1 brown Chesterfield melton overcoat, velvet collar, flap stitched seams, straight side pockets, figured lining— HUGO BERGER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 11. in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark; dressed as a waiter, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. A native of Dresden, Germany. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division.— For stealing, between 5th and 6th inst., a cushion shape ruby, dark colour, 3£ cts.; 1 ruby, bright stone, 2% cts.; 1 brilliant, 3 cts.; 1 do., l£ cts., fine blue stone; 58 small brilliants; 60 rose diamonds; 4 opals ( 1 large black, 2 oval, 1 round); 1 opal button- hook handle, 2 in. long ; 82 flat turquoise, set in gold, various shapes ; 3 turquoise; 1 pear- shaped pearl; 1 emerald, 7f cts.; 15 stones ( 5 round cut rubies, 5 amethysts, 5 crysophles); 1 small parcel of brilliants ( 1 navette shape); 1 do. rose diamonds ( 1 extra large oval shape); 1 do. fancy dark pearls; 1 box, containing turquoise and opals, several heart shape ; 1 box, glass top, containing small pearls; 1 gold stud, set large brilliant; 1 do., set small brilliant; 1 diamond tiara, forming necklace, star shaped pendant attached, set 61 fine white brilliants, black pearl ( 12 grains) in centre of pendant, 6 white pearls at edge, can be worn as a brooch, in blue velvet case ; 1 gold bar brooch, set 21 brilliants, f, pearl at one end ; 1 large silver and gold spray brooch mount, flowers mounted on springs ; 1 fleur- de- lis brooch mount, unfinished ; 1 heart shape silver and gold pendant, unfinished; 1 pendant mount, gold centre, unfinished; 1 gold comb mount, un- finished ; 1 gold collet necklace mount, unfinished; 4 gold carved ring shanks, unfinished; 1 gold cluster ring shank, unfinished; 1 gold 3- row ring shank, unfinished ; 2 gold cluster pin mounts; carriage clock mounts, 15 ct. gold, fine fancy pattern, Louis XV. style ; 1 small 18 ct. gold wire basket; and a quantity of 18 and 9 ct. gold wire— LOUIS MILLER" ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache, and eyes ( prominent) dark, square chin, Roman nose, slouching'' gait, carries his head downwards, re- ticent manner ; dress, blue Melton overcoat, dark suit, brown soft felt hat. A diamond setter; supposed a native of St. Petersburg. 4.— F Division.— For obtaining £ 23 10s. by a worthless cheque, drawn on the Baker Street branch of the National Provincial Bank — CHARLES BENJAMIN, supposed an American, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., round shoulders, com- plexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, large Roman nose, long face; dress, light grey tweed morning suit, light grey Raglan overcoat, cuffs turned up. Warrant issued. 6.— N Division. — For stealing £ 3i — JOHN ERASER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion florid, hair ginger, bleary eyes, addicted to drink, Scotch accent; dress, dark jacket suit, black hard felt hat with small brim. A brewer's canvasser. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ANGLESEY. l.— Menai Bridge ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and child— HUGH JAMES OWEN, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue. A blacksmith ; native of Anglesey. May be found working in South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Owen Jones, Menai Bridge. BRECONSHiRE. 8.— Brecon ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HERBERT JAMES ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark ; hair and mous- tache dark brown, eyes dark ; dress, dark suit with white stripes, black tie with imitation pearl pin, black bowler hat, lace boots, may be wearing brown boots, carried a black silk umbrella, crooked handle, silver band, and a brown leather gladstone bag. Stated he was a native of Bristol. He takes lodgings and represents himself as a traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. BUCKING HA MS HI RE. 9.— Chesham ( County).— For malicious wounding, 16ch inst., FREDERICK MILLER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair ( bald on top) and whiskers dark, eyes brown ; dress, dark pilot jacket, blue slop, dark trousers, engine driver's cap. An engine driver ; native of Chesham. May seek employment with threshing machines or on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Summers, Chesham. CARDIGANSHIRE. 10.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and child, leaving them chargeable to the common fund of the Aberystwyth Union— WILLIAM HARFORD EVANS, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, thin nose, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, has in his pos- session several suits of clothes. A groom ; native of Aberystwyth. Absconded 21st December last. Accompanied by a woman, age 19, rather tall, complexion dark. A domestic servant. Warrant issued. 11.— Aberystvjyth ( County).— On commit- ment warrant, having been sentenced to 4 months imprisonment for cruelty to his children— EYAN JEREMIAH JONES, age 31 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair very dark, moustache dark, eyes brown, 7 dots between thumb and right fore- finger, E. J. right arm ; dress, old dark clothes. A wood- turner; native of Aberystwyth. 12.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For stealing a basket containing painter's tools ( recovered)— JOHN WILSON, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache light or brown, bridge of nose inclines to right ; dress, brown jacket, dark trousers, black felt hat. A tramping painter. Warrant issued. > j Information to Supt. Phillips, Aberystwyth. CHESHIRE. 13— Dukinfield ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst., a silver English lever watch, No. 398392 — EDWARD BRITTON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, thin features, prominent nose, hair ( bald on top and thin at back) light brown, slight moustache, large vein left side of head ; wearing, black overcoat, black hard felt hat, boots with square toes. A native of Manchester. He travels the country selling card- board tickets, as used by jewellers, clothiers, & c., carried a black hand- bag, handle of which is tied with string. Warrant issued. Cooper, Dukinfield. 14.— Hazel Grove ( County).— For steal- ing a mackintosh and portmanteau— CLARA ATKINSON, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, sharp pointed nose, ears ( small) prominent, hair brown, eyes blue, upper teeth false; dress, seal- skin jacket, green skirt, black hat with black feathers, lace boots. A native of Cheadle, Cheshire. Is accompanied by John Arthur Marshall, Case No. 30. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oldham, Hazel Grove, Stockport. DENBIGHSHIRE. 15.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing a silver lever watch, No. 136394, silver curb pattern chain with seal ( red stone one side, black and white the other), attached— WILLIAM COOPER, age 22, height 5 ft. 6i in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes blue, good teeth, female tattooed left forearm ; dress, when last seen, fawn colour mackintosh with velvet collar, light plaid jacket, black trousers, white muffler with red stripes, blue or black cap, light lace boots. A musician. Is a deserter from the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. May be found playing a whistle at public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DORSETSHIRE. 16.— Poole ( County).— For obtaining 7s. by false pretences at Parkstone, 17th inst.— ALBERT STARK, alias JOHN MULLER, ALBERT, ERNEhT and JOHN BECKER, BUKER, ALBERT CREMER, GREVAN, HOFFMAN, LAZARUS KANFMANN, JOHN KIND, LEH- MAN. NEWMANN, GUSTAVE, SCHAFFER, SCHAFFESSO, age 40, height 5 ft. 5f in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, eye « grey, abscess scar under left ear, wart under right ear, ruptured right side ; dress, black ^ overcoat, velvet collar, brown jacket and vest, light check trousers, grey scull cap. A native of Alsace- Lorraine. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Poole. ESSEX. 17.— Colchester ( Coun ty).- For falsification of time sheets, between 13th November and 14th January last, with intent to defraud— WILLIAM SEALEY, alias SAINSBURY, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, compelxion florid, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes hazel, front upper teeth prominent, walks erect; dress, supposed dark grey serge suit, black square hard felt hat. A builder's foreman ; native of Harwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester. 18.— Epping ( County).— For stealing a cop- per boiler— WILLIAM PAINTER, alias SPICK, WRIGHT, and CROWEY, age 41, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel; dress, dark shabby clothes. Usually travels with a scis- sor grinder's barrow, may have with him a chest- nut pony. ALFRED FRENCH, alias CROWEY, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly) light brown, eyes grey; shabbily dressed. A gipsy, travels with the above ; natives of Harlow Common. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping; or In- spector Gibbons, Harlow. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Ringwood ( County).— For embezzling £ 3 17s. 10d.— CHARLES PAGE, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat or cap. A journeyman butcher ; native of South- ampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Payne, Ringwood. 20.— Winchester ( City). — For stealing pairs of blankets and a sheet ( recovered)— JOHN JONES, alias FREDERICK BROWN ( supposed false), age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, heavy mous- ache dark, large scar on face near ono eye; dress, dark jacket and trousers, blue guernsey, black cloth cap with shiny leather peak. Appearance of an engine driver or stoker. 21.— Winchester ( City). — For stealing £ 1 7s. 6d. and 1 pair of lady's plain shoes, size 4, strap across front, nearly new, " Talent" stamped on bottom— FLORENCE ELLISTON, age about 20, height about 5 ft., complexion and eyes dark, hair very dark brown, back deformed, walks lame, 2 front teeth deficient; dress, black dress, black cape with high collar, black straw hat with high crown. Is a good singer. Has stayed at Homes at Worcester, Leamington, Lady wood, and Malvern Link. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Felton, Win- chester. HERTFORDSHIRE, 22.— Hertford ( County).— For stealing an overcoat ( recovered)— WILLIAM LEE, age 42 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, slight moustache dark; dress, shabby brown jacket and vest, black trousers, old lace boots, hard felt hat. He calls on clergymen, states he has been a bags singer and that he is in reduced circumstances. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shore, Hertford. KENT. 23.— Sevenoaks ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 10s. by false pretences, 2nd inst.— A MAN who gave the name of ARTHUR BOWEN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown ; dress, dark coat and vest, light tweed trousers, skull cap, wore a gold Albert, carried a walking stick with crook handle. He engaged apartments, stating they were for a rich American family, and wished to leave a deposit, tendered a cheque for £ 7 10s. on the East Molesey Bank, made payable to Mr. Arthur Bowen, signed James Thomas and received the above amount ai balance. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Sevenoaks. 24.— Rochester ( City).— For stealing, 13th ult., a black pony, age 25 years, rough coat ( may now be clipped), hog mane ; a set of harness, with white metal mounts; basket collar; and a cart, body painted black picked out red, wheeli and springs red picked out black ; a fawn colour rug, with red and black stripes; and whip, — GEORGE SHARP, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., hair light, eyes grey, lame on right leg; dress, long blue cloth overcoat, brown tweed trousers, blue and white neckerchief, black hard felt hat. Had the appearance of a cabman. May be found working on barges. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Broadbridge, Rochester. 25.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For obtaining 8s. by false pretences— J. DAVID BLAIR, alias HARDING, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, thin face, hair and moustache grey, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, grey jacket and vest, light grey trousers, black hard felt hat. He took lodgings stating he was an engineer, and obtained the above amount for the purpose of having his luggage conveyed from the station. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Rams- gate. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., a blue pilot double- breasted overcoat, 2 out- side pockets with flaps, black buttons, " L. & Y." in red on collar— JOHN JONES, alias JOHN GREEN, MORRIS, JOSEPH MARSH, and RICHARD WALSH, age 40, height 5 ft. 3* in., complexion fresh, hair ( thin on top and turning grey), and moustache brown, scar top of head, horse's head and bridle inside right forearm, several scratches on face; dress, old brown jacket, cord vest and trousers, cap. Frequents lodging- houses. Has been convicted at Preston, Darwen, Blackburn, and Wigan. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 27.— Liverpool ( City). — Licence - holder THOMAS JONES, Office No. 2178- 00, Case No. 13, 8th inst., not now wanted. 28 — Manchester ( C%).— For stealing 90 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. £ 45811 to 45900 — Expiree FREDERICK SMITH, alias WIL- LIAMS, THOMPSON, and WALSH, Office No. 41886 ( see portrait, Case No. 10 of 25th June, 1897), age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, cut scar back of head lj in. long. Sentenced at Plymouth, 21st October, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny N 417. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Manchester. LEICESTERSHIRE. 29.— Market Harborough ( County).— For obtaining £ 1 by false pretences— CHARLES LISTEN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( thin on top) daik, turning grey, clean shaved, appearance of a groom ; dress, black jacket and vest, blue grey trousers, black bowler hat, blucher boots. Stated he had served in the 17th Lancers. He repre- sented that he had obtained an appointment with an Army officer, and required the above amount to proceed to the residence of the latter.
