All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the enact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent.; and, if the name of such person is required, to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or hit immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. I L T I O B I s . 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to tht Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the iwxt issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be. received ' not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the. Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of tly: paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post. Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE The amount of stolen property at present " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police has become BO inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cii culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Listsof all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or . circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. Sentenced at Liverpool County Sessions, 31st October, 1899, to 18 months imprisonment for attempted larceny ( person), and larceny, liberated 30th January last, previously convicted at Sheffield, York, Bradford, and Salford. HAMPSHIRE. 9. — Southampton ( Borough). — For malicious damage — GEORGE VEALE, alias HIXON, and POLLY TAYLOR, age about 27, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion and hair dark ; dress, short jacket with horseshoe shaped buttons, brown corduroy trousers, lace boots. A showman; native of Sholing Common, Hants. Is wellknown in Hampshire, Dorsetshire, and Somersetshire. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 10.— Weobley ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences at Clifford, 13th ult.— W. H. HASTINGS or GALLOWAY, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, moustache light, slight side whiskers turning grey ; dress, black overcoat, dark coat and vest, dark brown striped trousers ( patched), black hard felt hat, black bow tie, carried an umbrella and a small bag containing watchmakers' tools. He calls at houses representing that he has been sent by a local watchmaker, and if employed gives a receipt in his name. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. HERTFORDSHIRE. 11.— Watford ( County).— For larceny— FREDERICK WILLIAM ALLEN, age about 32, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair, side whiskers, and moustache brown. A bricklayer. May be accompanied by his wife, age about 26, tall, slight build, complexion fair, cast in one eye; and a girl, age 10 to 12 years. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. LANARKSHIRE. 12.— Kinning Park ( Burgh).— For embezzling £ 920 4s. 6d.— ROBERT GOW, age 39, height about 6 ft., broad shoulders, hair ( cut short) and slight moustache brown, eyes blue or grey, short straight nose, square under jaw, walks erect. A cashiei'; native of Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Absconded 3rd January last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Kinning Park. NORTHUMBERLAND. 16.— Blyth ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 13th ult,, a bay mare, aged, about 13 hands, white speck top of right eyelid, several white marks on near side, both knees broken, hog mane; a set of silver- mounted harness; and a Whitechapel trap, to seat 4, painted bronze green with yellow lines ; 2 blue cushions ; and 2 lamps— GEORGE FIELD, age 35, height 5 ft, 10 in., round shoulders, holds his head forward when walking, complexion and hair dark, flat nose, speaks with south country accent; dress, dark clothes and cap. A hawker. Is accompanied by his wife and an invalid child. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Northumberland, Morpeth ; or to Supt. Jobson, Blyth. OXFORDSHIRE. 17.— Oxford ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings and lis. by false pretences— ANNIE SMITH ( supposed false), age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and eyes ( cataract in right) brown; dress, brown three- quarter cut jacket and skirt, red cross over, brown fur boa, black straw hat, crape band, black veil, button boots. She calls upon persons, states she has just returned from South Africa, and that she has a number of presents for them from their friends who are at the war. Warrant issued. SHROPSHIRE. 18.— Oswestry ( County).— On commitment warrants for non- payment of fines imposed by magistrate— HENRY ROBERTS, age 47, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion swarthy7, hair and side whiskers dark ( turning grey). — JOSEPH ROBERTS, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown. Both are addicted to drink. Natives of Brynycockin, Ellesmere, Salop. May seek employment at farms or on public works. Information to Supt. Lewis, Oswestry. STAFFORDSHIRE. 15s. REWARD. 19.— Burslem ( County).— For absconding from Werrington Industrial School, 20th November last— JAMES EGERTON ( see Case No. 28, 7th December last). The above reward will be paid by the Superintendent, Werrington Industrial School, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Egerton. Warrant issued. 20.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., 5s. 6d. from a boy in the street— A MAN, • age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes dark; dress, brown jacket and vest, blue trousers, black and white muffler, boiler end hat. Is identical with Michael McCarthy, Cases No. 6 and it, 1st inst. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 21.— Lichfield ( County).— For obtaining byfalse pretences, 25th ult., 3 covert overcoats ( 1 very light, 1 grey twill cashmere, 1 dark cheviot) — A MAN, age about 22, height about 5 ft, 6 in., complexion pale, hair and very slight moustache dark, fluent speaker ; dress, dark tweed tight fitting suit, stand- up collar, black tie, dark tweed cap. The appearance of a groom. He represented that he had been sent for the coats by a local doctor who wanted to select one. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Lichfield. SUFFOLK. 22.-— Ipswich ( Borough).— For stealing an electro- plated drinking cup ( recovered), and 2 silver dessert knives— JOHN LOVELL CRISP, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., weight 10 stones, complexion swarthy, hair dark, eyes brown, scar on bridge of nose, rather splay- footed ; dress, brown overcoat ( velvet collar), pepper and salt coloured coat and vest, drab cord trousers, mixture coloured scarf, cap. A labourer, generally employed on sewerage works. Warrant issued. 23.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For absconding with workhouse clothing— FREDERICK DORLING, age 47, height about 5 ft, 9 in., high shoulders, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, rather long face, carries his head forward ; dress, dark grey jacket, grey trousers and vest, blue neckerchief, blue striped shirt, soft hat, blucher boots, all marked " Ipswich Union," shirt, neckerchief, and stockings also marked " No. 49." A native of Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Col. Russel, Chief Constable, Ipswich. SURREY. 24.— Farnham ( County).— For burglary at York Town, 18th ult., and stealing a cheque for £ 30 and 5s.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache sandy; dress, black overcoat, short sleeves, dark brown coat and vest, brown trousers, india rubber collar, black felt hat. Supposed a baker. He cashed the cheque at Reading on 19th ult., receiving three £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. 19,470, 25,281 and 33,764. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Farnham. 25.— Guildford ( County). — For stealing, 13th ult., at Knaphill, Woking, a safety bicycle, 26 in. frame, plush jointed, 28 in. wheels, Hartford single tube tyres ( front tyre repaired), lance wood rims, Hunt's saddle, rat- trap pedals, flat handle bars, felt grips, mudguard and brake, maker " Wolf" engraved on front of head tube— THOMAS FITZGERALD, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache ( curly) dark, eyes ( sunken) blue; dress, dark blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, bow tie, blue muffler with red spots, lace boots. Stevens, Lewes. 27.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, about 25th ult., a quantity of lead piping ( recovered)— THOMAS BALL, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, full face, hair ( cut short) and slight moustache dark, tattooed both arms ; dress, coarse ribbed velvet cord jacket and vest, white moleskin trousers ( nearlj new), heavy nailed boots, light skull cap. A navvy ; supposed a native of Croydon. Absconded 5th inst. May be accompanied by a MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair light; dress, pilot jacket, moleskin trousers, heavy boots, dark cap. A navvy. WA R WICKS HIRE. 28.— Birmingham ( City).— For obtaining £ 3 3s. by false pretences— FREDERICK DENTON, alius EDWARD BENJAMIN JOHNSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, oval face, hair, moustache and eyes ( small) dark; dress, dark morning suit, silk liat, sometimes wears a dark grey tweed . Alpine hat. A cycle agent, native of London. He advertised bicycles at £ 3 3s. each, obtained a number of remittances and absconded. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Absconded 23rd ult. Accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 24, 2 front upper teeth project; dress, red velvet blouse, fawn colour skirt, grey cape, green velvet hat trimmed black and white feathers, white veil; had with her a child about 2 months old, carried a black silk umbrella, ebonized handle, heavy gold plated knob, which is stolen property and the subject of a further charge against Wallace. A compositor, has lately been employed as an iron driller and an insurance agent; supposed a native of Edinburgh. Is a member of the Social Democratic Federation. Absconded 26th January last. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Wyness, Aberdeen. bowler hat. A corporal of the 2nd Dragoon Guards, from which he is a deserter. Native of Grahamstown, Cape Colony. A journalist and formerly special correspondent to the St. James1 Budget and the Matabele Times. Frequents theatres and music halls. Absconded 23rd ult.
