POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 1901. VOL. XVIII., No. 1780. EQIJL 1. All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZHTTE, and all communications relating to them, should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken uvon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property ivill be inserted at a cost of 15i. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must he guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must he signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. LTIOST s. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcementt of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. TTu y must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON. Editor. CHAP- MAN, Case No. 2, 27th July last, not to be arrested. 3.— C Division. — For embezzling, 8th inst., £ 8 15s. 2£ d.— WALTER BURDER, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark; dress, dark cardigan jacket, dark trousers, peak cap and wrapper, dark grey overcoat, lace boots. A fishmonger's carman. Warrant issued. 4.— C Division.— For stealing, 14th inst., £ 20 ( including a crossed cheque for £ 11, dated 13th January, 1901, on the Union Bank, Totten- ham Court Road Branch, drawn by W. A. Schlesinger, payable to G. H. Fisher & Co. (& Co. in perforation); 1 for £ 2 4s. 4d., on Cox's Bank, Charing Cross, drawn by Mr. Wise, Lieutenant, 13th Hussars, payable to Lowe & Wylde; 1 for 13s. 6d., on Jensen's Bank, " Lloyd's. Bank has taken over the business " printed thereon, drawn by W. Batchelor, payable to Lowe & Wylde)— H. KNAPPERT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache light brown, small eyes, 2 or 3 long cut marks on cheek, shrugs his shoulders and bends his head forward when talking, can speak French, German, and Spanish fluently; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, dark grey sac overcoat ( slanting hip pockets, black velvet collar), silk or black bowler hat, brown boots. Was employed as a chemist's dispenser; supposed a native of Cologne. 5.— E Division.— For stealing a lady's gold keyless watch, maker " Faller, Bristol " ; 1 gold curb- pattern Albert, heart- shape locket attached, " R" in pearls thereon— GEORGE HENRY HILL, age 23, height 6 ft., stout build, complexion ruddy, full round face, hair brown, slight mous- tache dark, eyes grey, tattooed on both forearms and back of right hand, of military appearance; dress, brown reefer jacket suit, grey cloth cap, low shoes, wearing leather belt with brass studs. A native of Birmingham. 6.— S Division. — For fraud— SARAH JACOBS, alias TAYLOR, Office No. 302( 5- 00, age 31, height 5 ft. 2J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark brown, scar on left cheek and forehead, burn scar left elbow; dress, long brown ulster, black cape and skirt, black sailor hat. A native of Ycule, Somersetshire. She calls upon followers of religious bodies, representing she has come into a sum of money, and borrows money to pay solicitors' fees. Warrant issued. 7.— T Division .— For stealing £ 51 2s. 3d. — EDWIN GEORGE GUY, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, clean shaved, hair light; dress, dark blue overcoat, dark check trousers, white silk muffler, black hard felt hat, brown lace boots. May seek employment at stables. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BREC ONSHIRE. 8.— Crickhowell { County).— For stealing £ 1— A MAN, age 30 to 32, height about 5 ft. 8 in.,, complexion dark, broad forehead ; dress, grey double- breasted jacket suit, dark cap, black tie. He pretends to make a purchase at a shop, and asks for change, which he picks up and runs off with. Supposed identical with MAN, Case No. 41, 21st September, 1900. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CHESHIRE. 9.— Liscard [ County). — For embezzling £ 87 0s. 7d. — WILLIAM HENRY BUSHELL, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue or grey ; well dressed. A native of Seacombe. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Liscard. 10. - Middlewich { County).— For stealing a silver English lever watch, No. 5852; 1 white metal watch guard, curb pattern ; and a brown leather purse containing 12s.— WILLIAM MOSS, alias LANGLEY, age 19±, height 5 ft, 3^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar on back of head. Is a deserter from the 122nd Battery Royal Field Artillery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. 11.— Nantwich ( County).— For stealing a gold- filled semi- hunter Waltham lever watch, enamelled figures around outer case ; 1 9 ct. chain, graduated curb pattern, with bar and swivel— WILLIAM EUGENE BURKE, age 24, height 5 ft. 9J in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, tombstone, wreath, and boy tattooed right fore- arm ; dress, fawn coloured tweed suit with red spots, red tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots, wearing a gold hunter watch, supposed silver chain, curb pattern, an 18 ct. snake ring, and a 9 ct. keeper ring; had in his possession a yellow tin box, about 24 by 16 in. Warrant issued. 15.— Chelmsford ( County).— For burglary, 12th inst., and stealing an old double- case silver Geneva hunter watch, No. 25982, maker ( supposed) Loveday, Chelmsford, imitation gold chain and guinea; 1 briar pipe, short straight stem, black mouthpiece, silver band; 1 meerschaum cigar holder, imitation Turk's head, in black case, mouthpiece deficient; 1 gardener's buck- horn handle knife, " Long" on blade ; 1 dark drab cap, lining yellow— A YOUTH, age about 18, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., thin pale face, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, carries his head forward ; dress, short dark mixture jacket, old light cloth trousers, ragged at bottoms, old boots, and the stolen cap, which is too large. Supposed a native of Lincolnshire. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 16.— Colchester ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., at West Bergholt, a pneumatic safety bicycle, black enamelled, 1J in. Dunlop tyres, Road- ster handle bars, cork handles, old pattern cover on front wheel and new pattern cover on back, 30 in. front, 28 in. back, maker Crisp, Lycett saddle, Reynolds' chain, rat- trap pedals, new Dunlop nickel pump— A MAN, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, pointed chin, hair and slight moustache light; dress, black diagonal morning coat, dark trousers with light stripe, black hard felt hat, tan gloves. Ackers, Colchester. 17.— Halstead ( County).— For stealing at Earl's Colne, 4th inst., a pneumatic " Swift" bicycle, black enamelled, dropped handle bar, cork handles, black tips, ' 96 pattern frame, Warwick tyre on front wheel, Dunlop tyre back wheel, 28 in. wheels, fitted with in. block chain, rat- trap pedals, about 65 gear, plated inflator, New Departure bell, old saddle, round plated lamp, front glass cracked, 1 red, 1 green glass at sides— — CLAYDON, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, long thin face, Roman nose, hair and slight moustache light; dress, black coat, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, long dark tie. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Barnard, Halstead. 18.— Harwich ( County).— FRANK KAME KICHI, Case No. 20, 28th ult., not to be arrested. W.— Latchingdon ( County).— For bigamy at Harwich, 6th December, 1899— JOHN SAMP- SON RICHARDSON, alias JOHN SAMPSON FUNNELL, age about 39, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair dark brown, moustache, may be wearing side whiskers. A native of Hailsham, Sussex. May seek employment at brickfields. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Halsey, Latchingdon. 20.— Southend - on - Sea ( County). — For embezzling £ 5, 15th ult. — WILLIAM GRUNDY, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue, carries his head slightly forward, walks badly; dress, blue serge jacket suit, blue cloth yachting cap. A native of Southend- on- Sea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sea. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Aldershot ( County). — For stealing £ 181, 20th ult.— WILLIAM McLAUGHLIN, age 37, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair black, moustache dark, eyes brown, O. S. H. M., crown and stars tattooed on left forearm, heart and sword right forearm, swinging gait, addicted to drink, has a habit of twirling his moustache, or rubbing his hands when talking ; wearing ( when last seen) a dark overcoat and black bowler hat. Is a colour- sergeant of the 1st Royal Home Counties Reserve Regiment. 22.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing £ 154, 22nd ult.— ALBERT COLE, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, brown lounge suit, light mackin- tosh with velvet collar, light cap. A corporal of the 10th Battery Royal Field Artillery. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 23.— Alton ( County).— For burglary, 14th inst.— HARRY SEARLE, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, hands and arms tattooed ; dress, black coat, grey vest, blue trousers, heavy lace boots. James, Alton. 24.— Bournemouth ( County).— For steal- ing, 11th inat., a gold watch ( recovered)— A MAN, age 30, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair, slight moustache and side whiskers light, eyes blue, thick lips, large nose, scar top of right eye and right thumb ; dress, dark coat and vest with dark brown stripes, dark trousers, black tie with light stripe, red and blue shot silk muffler, black bowler hat. He took lodgings, stating he had just come from Paris, and that his luggage would arrive shortly. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 25.— Ringwood ( County).— For unlawful wounding — HERBERT TRICKETT, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, dark coat, cord trousers ( tight- fitting), cap. A native of Ferndown, Dorset. May seek employ- ment on public works. Is a notorious poacher. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Payne, Ringwood. 26.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For em- bezzling £ 7 6s. 6d.— JAMES ROBERTSON, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( nearly bald) dark brown, moustache light; dress, new black overcoat, light check tweed suit, red tie, brown cap, lace boots. Has been em- ployed as a brewer's drayman. Absconded 29th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 27.— Southampton ( Borough).— For ob- taining credit while an undischarged bankrupt— JOHN HOWE, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., broad shoulders, complexion fresh, full round face, hair and moustache light, eyes grey. A cabinet maker and joiner ; native of Dorchester. HEREFORDSHIRE. 30.— Ledbury ( County).— For assault and night poaching, 23rd ult.— ROBERT CALE, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, long face, high cheek bones, hair light, eyes grey; dress, dark jacket and vest, cotton cord trousers, grey cap, strong lace boots. A hop string worker.— FRANK CALE, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, bridge of nose has been broken ; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey trousers and cap, strong lace boots. HER TFORDSHIRE. 31.— Watford ( County)— For larceny ( bailee) — WILLIAM GRASS, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, slight mous- tache brown, rather long face and chin, usually wears light brown suit. A labourer; native of Watford. Has served in the Army.— ANNIE GRASS, age 24, height 5 ft., slight build, com- plexion sallow, thin face, hair ( inclined to curl) dark brown, cross- eyed ; dress, usually fawn colour costume, black sailor hat. A native of Watford, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Watford. 32.— St. Albans ( City).— For embezzle- ment— HENRY MUCKLESTONE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue ; dress, brown mixture jacket suit, brown cap, lace shoes. A journeyman butcher; native of Toddington, Bed- fordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. KENT. 33.— Chatham ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences — JAMES OLIVER, alias BULLOCK, age about 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes blue ; dress, grey overcoat, black trousers, black felt hat, carried a blacK bag. Warrant issued. 34— Chatham ( County).— For forging a receipt for £ 18— FRANK BARTON THOMP- SON, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes ( sunken) dark, walks badly, looks out of the corners of his eyes, speaks with Lancashire accent; dress, check suit, black morning coat, blue shirt, hard felt hat, or cap, light lace or button boots. Supposed a native of Manchester. Warrant issued. 35 — Chatham ( County). — For deserting their wives and families— WILLIAM HUNT, alias BARNEY, BARNES, and EATON, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fair, moustache light, eyes grey, lost left forearm, part of a woman tattooed on right forearm; dress, blue coat and cap, fustian trousers. A labourer. — JOHN BEETON, age 41, height 5 ft. 5| in., complexion fresh, beard and moustache light ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar over left eye and bridge of nose, ring tattooed on one of left fingers, bracelet left wrist; dress, tweed suit. A labourer. — JOHN BROUGHTON, age 43, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey), beard and moustache brown, eyes brown; wearing tweed trousers and vest. A cooper. Sargent, Chatham. m.- Maidstone ( Borough). — For em- bezzling £ 6 5s. — FREDERICK PRATT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion very pale, hair light brown, eyes ( supposed) grey ; wearing black frock coat, silk hat, or black morning coat and felt hat.
