The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for.
