T H E POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1900. VOL. XVII., No. 1744. REGULATIONS 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought loill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person resjfotisible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Porti'aits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of / wt less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Aimou/ ncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they a/ re alphabetically an- ra/ nged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE OAZETTE, mutt, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all eases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than mon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly ivritten on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, aiia accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payvicnts must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only he accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. E. ANDERSON, Editor. CHESHIRE. 4.— AItrincham ( County).— For obtaining 30s. by false pretences— ARTHUR ROBERTS, alias " GEORGE," age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) turn- ing grey, clean shaved, large mole one side of face near nose, Welsh accent, very talkative, walks very erect; dress, brown jacket, light vest, corduroy trousers ( much worn), black and white neckerchief, light cap with 2 peaks, new lace boots. A farm servant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Okell, Altrincham. 5.— Chester ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a mare ( recovered)— ROBERT MARFLEET, age 21, height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar back of right forearm, palm of left hand, and left forefinger, mole on both arms ; dress, dark plaid coat and vest, with velvet collars, white bone buttons, light trousers with blue stripes, dark plaid peak cap, brown boots. ESSEX. 6.— Romford ( County).— For stealing, 31st ult., at Harold Wood, a gold watch and chain ( recovered) and a lady's old silver watch, nearly smooth back, plain white face, outer ease repaired in two places near joint, short piece of black chain attached— T. H. WALSH, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, thin face, hair brown, clean shaved, one arm tattooed, of military appearance; dress, light tweed cycling jacket, black and white striped trousers, fastened at bottoms, light cap or white straw hat, sometimes wears blue glasses. Had in his possession an army discharge certificate. Stated he had been wounded in South Africa ; was riding a safety bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 1.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing a bicycie ( recovered)— WILLIAM WILSON, alias WILKIN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, 2 front teeth deficient in upper jaw ; dress, dark brown suit, hard felt hat, of military appearance. Stated he was a painter and a native of Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 8.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th July last, a suit of clothes ( recovered)— ELIZA- BETH MOURANT, alias HOMAN, ALDER- MAN, and NORMAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, bow- legged, takes long strides, mole left side of mouth ; dress, blue spotted blouse, black skirt, white straw hat with black band and a bunch of buttercups, wearing paste diamond earrings. A tailoress, native of Jersey. May be found at common lodging houses, Salvation Army homes, or seeking work at laundries Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. 9.— Neath ( Borough).— For embezzlement, 8th inst.— THOMAS HENRY JONES, age 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( curly) black, blue mark on chin, Welsh accent, apparently dull of comprehension ; wearing black coat and vest, black cap, wore a signet ring. A haulier. May endeavour to join a travelling theatrical company. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Kilpatrick, Neath. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 10 — Coleford ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) 7th ult., a gold Albert, link pattern— EDWARD JOHNSON, age about 60, height 5 ft. 11J in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, eyes blue, walks erect with short quick steps, London accent; dress, blue serge suit and cap, had with him a silk hat and black frock coat suit ( all new). TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1900. 11.— Stroud ( Count;/).— For stealing ( by trick) a light grey suit ami a pair of dark striped trousers BURTON, alias A. WILSON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue, cut scar centre of lower lip ; wearing the stolen suit, dark cycling cap, boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harrison, Stroud. 12.— Bristol ( City). — For embezzlement— CHARLES F. WARLAND, alias ARTHUR CHARLTON RIGBY, age 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in, hair dark brown, clean shaved, left leg shorter than right. A newspaper correspondent. Absconded 19th July last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HADDINGTONSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 13 — Haddington ( County).— For deserting his wife and children— THOMAS RAE, age 31, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in, complexion sallow, long face, hair dark brown, moustache light; dress, black corded coat and vest, light trousers, dark peak cap A house painter ; native of Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. T. W. Kemp, Inspector of Poor, Haddington, to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Rae. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Mann, Haddington. HAMPSHIRE. 14. — Aidershot ( County).— For stealing £ 10 31st ult,— ROBERT EASTON, age about 16, height about 5 ft, thin features, hair brown, only 2 front teeth, which are very prominent ; dress, grey jacket and trousers, blue cap. Recently came from Edinburgh, and has been employed as an errand boy in a regimental canteen. 15.— Aidershot ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 6th inst.— WILLIAM MILES, alias W. SMITH, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., hair dark brown, moustache dark, scar left cheek ; dress, dark coat, brown vest, dark trousers with light stripe, black bow tie, hard felt hat, wears a ring on both little fingers, carries a rush basket containing scales, weights, and tools, and represents himself as a repairer, or inspector of weights and measures. Had in his possession a number of billheads, " W. Smith & Sons, Flood Street, King's Road, Chelsea," thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aidershot. HEREFORDSHIRE. 16.— Hereford ( City).— For stealing a pair of blankets, 2 counterpanes, and £ 4 — WILLIAM WATKINS, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, broad shoulders, stout build, complexion pale, hair light brown, small light moustache ( clipped) and side whiskers, eyes light blue, good teeth, mole left side of nose, walks and speaks quickly, suffers from eczema on face, fond of billiards and cards ; dress, brown mixture suit, soft white hat with black band, also had with, him a dark grey mixture Norfolk jacket and knickers, plaid stockings, and brown shoes. Has served in the constabulary. Is accompanied by A WOMAN, age 35, height, 5 ft. 5 or 6 in, complexion pale, round face, hair dark; dress, black clothes, or navy blue costume. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Richardson, Hereford. KENT. 17.— Canterbury ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst, at Chatham, a silver English lever watch, " An improved lever," in black letters on face, silver curb chain, with sovereign purse attached ; and a silk umbrella, with ebony handle and silver knob— HENRY WILLIAMS, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown ; dress, black jacket and tiousers, yellow and black tie, white shirt (" P. Wall" in ink on front). Is a good musician. Has been invalided from the 21st Lancers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jacobs, County Police Office, Canterbury. 18.— Cranbrook ( County). — On commit- ment warrant for non- payment of £ 3 6s. fine and costs imposed for wilful damage— JOHN TOM BAKER, a circus manager, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown ; dress, blue serge suit and peak cap. A native of Wisbech. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 19.— Sittingbourne ( County)— For desert- ing his wife and children— HENRY BONES, age about 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair light, moustache inclined to red ; dress, short black jacket and vest, light stripe trousers, light cap, red and black necker- chief, nail hoots. Warrant issued. 20.— Sittingbourne ( County)— For failing to report— Supervisee JOHN MAY, Office No. 3460- 96, age 38, height 5 ft. 5i in, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, lightship, cutter, raft, mermaid, bracelet, & c, right arm, shield, 2 flags, crown, lighthouse left arm. A labourer ; native of Wateringbury. Sentenced at Maidstone Sessions, 7th January, 1886, to 14 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for house- breaking. H. M. 293. Turner, Sittingbourne. 21.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing harness ( recovered)— ROBERT GEORGE KIT- CATT, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, mole right shoulder blade. A native of Bury St. Edmunds. Is a deserter from the 11th Hussars. Absconded 5th inst. 22.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing 2 bicycles, 1st, a gentleman's " Campion," nearly new, " Campion " transfer down front tube, flat handle bar, felt grips, front brake, no mudguards, black enamelled, usual parts plated, J in. roller chain, geared to 72, brown leather saddle, and pouch containing 2 spanners, black enamelled lamp, small plated bell, and small plated | edals. 2nd, a lady's " Club Swift," Dunlop tyre to hind wheel, wide handle bar, cork grips, gold lined, rather scratched, 3 spiral spring saddle, brown leather tool bag, small plated bell and lamp, " Swift Club " transfer on head, and " E. J. Philpott, 42, High Street, Canterbury," on front tube— JOSEPH FAW- CETT, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, blind left eye. Is accompanied by a woman ( supposed his wife), age about 26, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in, complexion fresh, hair brown ; dress, white sailor straw hat, grey bodice and skirt, and small white woollen shawl. Is believed to be wanted elsewhere for similar offences. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 23.— Folkestone ( Borough)— For obtaining £ 3 10s. by false pretences, 6th inst.— A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 4 in., square shoulders, complexion ruddy, thin face, clean shaved, large frcnt teeth wide apart; dress, blue serge suit, brass buttons, gold braid on sleeves, shiny peak cap, with flag in front and gold cord. Appearance of an officer of the merchant service. Visits sea- side and provincial towns with two or three others selling skins, furs, & c, and may be accom- panied by a woman, age 30 to 40, complexion fresh, full face; dress, dark blue serge skirt, pale blue and white striped blouse, white straw sailor hat with black band. Left here 7th inst. with a large oval top black trunk, varnished boards across top, large brown paper parcel containing furs, & c., and a brown Gladstone bag. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Reeve, Folke- stone. 24.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult, a cheque book on the Kilburn Branch of the London and Sout. h- Western Bank, containing Nos. A408522- 5; a red leather silver- mounted purse, containing about £ 1 16s, 2 return tickets, Rams- gate to Victoria, and a small note book, " 61 Cornwall Road, Bayswater," therein— A WOMAN giving the name of WALKER, age about 19, medium height, complexion pale, hair ( worn down back) brown ; dress, blue serge, and white lace skirts, white blouse, large white straw hat t rimmed large white feather, red roses and magenta ribbon, yellow shoes, wore a gold neck chain with cross attached. May be carrying a fawn colour mackin- tosh and blue parasol. She engaged apartments, stating that her mother and sister were coming by a later train. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Ramsgate. LEICESTERSHIRE. 25.— Leicester ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- holder WILLIAM MCDONALD, Office No. 2267- 00, age 54, height 5 ft. 7J in, com- plexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, mole right side of chest, scar right of forehead and left of neck; of weak intellect. Sentenced at Leicester County Assizes, 19th November, 1896, to 5 years penal servitude for stack firing. Licenced 22nd ult. W. 424. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Leicester. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 26.— Risca ( County).— For stealing £ 2 worth of penny postage stamps, 1st inst,, at Abercarn— DAVID PHILLIPS, alias WILLIAM HENRY WOOD and WILSON, age 31, height about 5 ft. 6 in, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes ( rather large) supposed brown, of smart appearance; dress, dark suit, black hard bowler hat. Supposed a native of Yorkshire, and is believed to have been convicted at Liverpool and Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Porter, Risca. NORFOLK. 27.— Docking ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst, from a boarding- house at Hunstanton, a lady's gold watch, plain dial, black figures, shield on back, No. 9407, 2 plate lever, old- fashioned gold chain made into 4 separate chains, gold locket, seal, cross, key, and ring attached ; 1 cedar- wood., box, about 7 in. long, 2 cardboard boxes inside, containing a lady's gold ring, set 3 emeralds ( old- fashioned) ; 1 do, set diamond ; 1 do, set 2 rubies and 2 small diamonds; 1 do, hair in centre, with pearls around; 1 gold safety- pin brooch to match ; 1 gold brooch, shape of 2 ivy leaves ; 1 do, shape of clover leaf ; 1 do, bar set topaz ; 1 small do, set moonstone in centre; 1 small gold safety- pin, set greenstone in centre, pearls each side; 1 small gold safetj- pin brooch, set pearls, shape of 3 stars ; 1 gold safety- pin, set small shell; 1 small peacock- green plush purse, containing £ 1 4s. 6d.; 1 green- embroidered handkerchief box, containing about 12 white handkerchiefs, some marked with embroidered initials " E. M. S.," others marked " E. A. B." in ink, and 4 or 5 muslin handkerchiefs— A WOMAN, who gave the name of WEST, age about 32, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in, stout build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes dark ; dress, black dress, large black straw hat, black veil, wore a heavy gold neck chain, 2 bracelets ( 1 curb- pattern), and 3 gold rings. Identical with woman, Case No. 46, 7th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baldwin, Docking. NORTHUMBERLAND. 28.— Gosforth ( County).— For failing to re- port— Expiree PATRICK MYOCK, alias MYKES, ALLEN, and GILBOY, Office No. 2985- 99, age 33, height 5 ft. in, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, 5 dots between left thumb and forefinger, 2 rings left ring finger, fleshy mole left side of neck. A boiler maker; native of Hebburn, Durham. Sentenced at Newcastle Quarter Sessions, 1st July, 1897, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. X. 191. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hay, Gosforth. OXFORDSHIRE. 29.- Oxford { City).— For stealing £ 81 10s. — HANS WOBBE, a German, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache light, walks badly ; dress, black morn- ing coat and vest, light trousers, blue tie, black hard hat. A glazier ; may endeavour to leave the country. Information to Chief Constable Cole, Oxford. SHROPSHIRE. 30.— Oswestry ( County). — For stealing, 18th ult, a " Singer" safety bicycle, " No. 196" on fork, A. B. tyres — A MAN, who gave the name of EDWARD SMITH, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 6 in, hair dark brown, red face, prominent forehead; dress, round jacket, dark brown cord trousers ( raised seams), blue peak cap. Has been employed as a navvy at waterworks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Oswestry. SOMERSETSHIRE. 31.— Yeovil ( County).— For obtaining, 5th inst, by false pretences, a uew " Swift" bicycle, black enamelled, Warwick tyres, flat handle baro, Lucas bell, brown saddle, mudguards and brake, No. 26543— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion fair, hair light; dress, light suit, Btraw hat. Identical with a man wanted at Gloucester, and giving the name of A. WILSON. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Self, Yeovil. 32.— Bath ( City).— For stealing a pony, trap and harness ( recovered)— A MAN, who gave the name of — GIBSON, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 6 in, slight moustache light; wearing black coat and cap, or grey suit. Had in his possession several photographs of himself. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bath. TUESDAY, . SEPTEMBER 18, 1900. CAMP- BELL, THOMAS CAMPBELL, and THOMAS DEMPSEY, Office No. 3096- 311, age 41, height ."> ft. 4i in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar on both eyebrows, above right eye- brow, left arm, right middle linger, chest, back, and 2 on right arm, tattooed anchor, " T. L." and crossed flags outside left arm, left wrist and nose have been broken, minus 2nd and 3rd left tingers. Has been convicted at Glossop, Derby, Sheffield, and chesterfield. Will probably seek employ- ment harvesting. Information to Chief Constable Barry, Rochdale.
