All aimouwements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to ' hot,, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought v> ill be inserted in. one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the a rt icle i n quest ion to be t hereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the mine and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of T5*. per portrait, and of Is. & d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and. if lbs nuns- of such person is required to !<<• inserted, and no warrant, is in force against h im, the requisition must be signed by the ch ief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the comity, city, or borough, as the sase may be. 7. Announce me / Us concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the annou/ ncement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any avmoimcement mill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street, Post Office. 13. Annonncemeids concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted oh payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same iciU be given on application. R. ANDERSON, EdiUr. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. The amount of stolen property at present" circu- lated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very considerably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " cir- culation " in Informationsand Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Con- stables are requested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circula- tion " of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— A Division. - For obtaining £ 4 ." is. by worthless cheques on the London and South Western Bank, 5 St. George's Circus, Southwark — JOHN MIDDLETON, alias MIDDLIN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, double chin, hair and eyes brown, long drooping moustache dark brown, raises his eye- brows when talking ; dress, light overcoat, blue serge suit, brown hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 2.— D Division.— For fraud, CHARLES, alias ROBERT THOMAS WOOD, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and long mous- tache dark, large scar left side back of neck. Has been in the army, and is of military appearance. Supposed wearing dark clothing. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division.— For conspiracy to fraud — MILBOURNE CLARK, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion florid, hair dark brown, fleshy lump right side of face and under left side of chin ; dress, blue serge suit, long light overcoat, soft grey cloth hat.— RANDALL BERGMANN, a German, age 35, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair black ; usually dressed in dark clothing. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office. New Scotland Yard, S. W. i. — K Division. — RICHARD OWEN, Case No. 3, 25th May last. Warrant withdrawn. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For embezzling £ 92 — W. J. STEM- BRIDGE, late of Clapham, age about 38, height 5 ft. 4 in., thick set, complexion florid, hair ( bald on top), moustache, and short beard dark brown, well dressed, of horsey appearance. BERKSHIRE. 0.— Newbury ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., a " Royal Ormonde " bicycle, 20 in. frame, 30 in. front wheel, Dunlop 1898 pattern tyres, odd rubber pedals, wide handle bar, forward lug, black enamelled, usual parts plated, brake and mudguards— ALBERT REEVES, age 23, height about 5 ft. C in., stout build, hair light, clean shaved or slight moustache, eyes blue ; dress, dark mixture frock coat and vest, blue striped trousers, dark grey cap, black tie with green horse- shoes thereon, button bocts. A groom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 7.- Great Marlow ( County).— For steal- ing, 21st ult., a " Defiance" safety bicycle, 24 in. frame, 28 in. wheels, jointless hollow rims, Fluess tyres, J in. pitch chain, free wheel, Darby and Trant front rim brake, raised handle bars, cork grips with coloured tips WHEELER, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion and very slight moustache dark ; dress, dark blue suit and cap ; appearance of a mechanic. CHESHIRE. 8.— Oakmere ' County).— For an indecent assault, 25th ult., at Norley— THOMAS CLARK, alias SAYERS, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel; dress, black jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, cap, and strong boots. A labourer ; native of Norley, Cheshire. May be found on public works, or at farms. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Nield, Oakmere, near North wich. DERBYSHIRE. 9.- Alfreton ( County).— For embezzling £ 2 15s. 10d — JOHN PURCELL, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or ti in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes blue; dress, navy blue suit ( double- breasted square- cut jacket), light cap, brown boots, appear ance of a groom. Native of Somercotes, Derby shire. Has been employed as a bread cart man. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. DORSETSHIRE. 10. Poole ( County). — For falsification of accounts, between 1st and 10th ult., at l'arkstone — WILLIAM BOSWARTH BARNETT, late sub- postmaster, age 44 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard, and whiskers ( cut close) grey, moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes blue ; dress, dark grey suit, white tie, cloth cap, had with him 2 or 3 hand bags. Supposed a native of Bristol. Absconded 17th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hains, Poole. ESSEX. 11.— Grays ( County).— For embezzlement— HENRY TOTT, age 18, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, slight moustache; dress, blue serge suit. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Waterman, Maldon. 13.— Romford ( Cotmty).— For stealing, 31st ult., at Harold Wood, a gold watch and chain ( recovered) and a lady's old silver watch, nearly smooth back, plain white face, outer case repaired in two places near joint, short piece of black chain attached— T. H. WALSH, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, complexion fresh, thin face, hair brown, clean shaved, one arm tattooed, of military appearance; dress, light tweed cycling jacket, black and white striped trousers, fastened at bottoms, light cap or white straw hat, sometimes wears blue glasses. Had in his possession an army discharge certificate. Stated he had been wounded in South Africa : was riding a safety bicycle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 14.— Colchester [ Borough).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— WILLIAM WILSON, alias WILKIN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, 2 front teeth deficient in upper jaw ; dress, dark brown suit, hard felt hat, of military appearance. Stated he was a painter and a native of Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. FLINTSHIRE. 1").— Mold ( County).— For absconding from St. David's Reformatory School — CHARLES QUINN, age 18, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, face blotched, hair brown, eyes grey, slightly knock- kneed ; dress, blue serge jumper and pants, check shirt, white flannel singlet with blue jean edging round neck, lace boots. Is a good B flat clarionet player.— HUGO ERNEST JONES, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, stout build, complexion fresh, red cheeks, hair dark brown, eyes blue; dress, blue serge jumper and pants, check shirt, white flannel singlet, buckled boots. Is a good E fiat clarionet player. Both natives of London. A reward of £ 1 will be paid by the Captain Superintendent, St. David's College, Mold, for such information as will lead to the arrest of either of the above. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 16.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th July last, a suit of clothes ( recovered)— ELIZA- BETH MOURANT, alias HOMAN, ALDER- MAN. and NORMAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, bow- legged, takes long strides, mole left side of mouth ; dress, blue spotted blouse, black skirt, white straw hat with black band and a bunch of buttercups, wearing paste diamond earrings. A tailoress, native of Jersey. May be found at common lodging houses, Salvation Army homes, or seeking work at laundries Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17 — Cheltenham ( County).— For leaving her two children chargeable to the Cheltenham Union— ELLEN HALL, alias WILLIAMS, age 28, height 5 ft. J. in, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, both little fingers crooked. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham. 18.— Stroud ( County).— For stealing ( by trick) a light grey suit and a pair of dark striped trousers BURTON, alias A. WILSON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue, cut scar centre of lower lip ; wearing the stolen suit, dark cycling cap, boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harrison, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. IS Aldershot ( County). — For stealing £ 10 31st ult.— ROBERT EASTON, age about 16, height about 5 ft., thin features, hair brown, only 2 front teeth, which are very prominent ; dress, grey jacket and trousers, blue cap. Recently came from Edinburgh, and has been employed as an errand boy in a regimental canteen. Information to Supt, Hawkins, Aidershot. 20.- Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 17— THOMAS PICKETT, age 29, height 5 ft. 4} in, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, B. P. tattooed back left forearm, bracelet back left wrist, heart and T back right forearm, cut scar front of left forefinger and back of left 3rd finger ; dress, dark bluish grey suit, white straw hat, black band, side spring boots Concerned with THOMAS SMITH and another, see Case No. 30, 31st ult. HER TFOROSHIRE. 21.— Hertford ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult, 4 ladies' umbrellas— BILLY ALEXANDER, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in, slight build, complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, small side whiskers and moustache grey, cross- eyed, stoops, and carries his head on one side ; dress, black morning coat and vest, pepper and salt colour trousers, white apron fastened round waist, appear- ance of an umbrella mender. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shore, Hertford. KENT. 22.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst, a pneumatic bicycle, Wyvern covers, patent chain wheel with rollers, bent handle bars, green handles with white tips, Westwood rims, " Grant and Holt, Cycle Makers, 63 Godinton Road, Ashford, Kent," on head, no brake or mudguards — JAMES FINCH, age 20J, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fresh, hair ( short) brown, eyes blue, forearms and left middle finger tattooed, scar right elbow ; wearing brown jacket and vest, brown cap, old lace boots. A cycle maker; native of Islington, London. Is a deserter from the 11th Hussars. 23.— Ashford ( County).— For non- appear- ance to a summons for libel— GEORGE WIL- LIAM BANTON, age 41, height 5 ft. 4£ in, slight build, complexion fresh, thin features, hair brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue; dress, dark tweed coat and trousers, light speckled vest ( faded), white tie, brown cap, light lace boots. He represented himself to be a traveller ; native of Covent Garden, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bailey, Ashford. 24.— Cranbrook ( County). — On commit- ment warrant for non- payment of £ 3 6s. fine and costs imposed for wilful damage — JOHN TOM BAKER, a circus manager, age about 40, height 5 ft, 5 in, complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown ; dress, blue serge suit and peak cap. A native of Wisbech. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 25. — Folkestone ( Borough). — For steal- ing, 20th ult.— A silver watch, maker James Jay, 566, Essex Road, Islington ; 1 lady's silver watch; 1 lady's gold Albert, with tassel and gold heart- shaped locket attached; 1 gold keeper ring ( broken) ; 1 15 ct. gold ring, set with 2 rubies and 1 diamond ; 1 plain gold collar stud and 2 plain gold shirt studs; 1 silver Albert curb pattern chain, with silver compass at end; 1 silver Albert, curb pattjrn, with seal at end; 1 square oak- frame alarm clock, about 10 inches high, brass handle on top, small piece of brass at each corner of face ; an oak grained tin box, about 2 ft. long, 18 in. wide ; 2 piirs ladies' drawers; 2 white cotton chemises; 1 sable fur necklet with 6 tails ; 1 new blanket, with border about 12 ins. deep ; 1 lady's black jacket, with large buttons, 1 missing; 1 blue and black silk wrap— ALICE WOOLGAR, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 4 in, complexion and hair dark, bad teeth ; dress, black and white blouse, dark blue serge skirt, white sailor hat, had with her a little girl, about 15 months old. Supposed identical with woman described in Case No. 41, 16th February last. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Reeve, Folke- stone. 26.— Ramsgate ( Borough).— For stealing a barrow ( recovered)— A MAN, age 27 to 30, height about 6 ft, slight build, complexion and hair dark, long face, broad features, slight light moustache, eyes sunken ; dress, black jacket, light vest, dark trousers, grey cap or black felt hat. A rag and bone gatherer. Is known as " Long Jim." Warrant issued. 27.— Ramsgate ( Borough). — 30tli ult, a cheque book on the Kilburn Branch of the London and South- Western Bank, containing Nos. A408522- 5 ; a red leather silver- mounted purse, containing about £ 1 16s, 2 return tickets, Rams- gate to Victoria, and a small note book, " 61 Cornwall Road, Bayswater," therein— A WOMAN giving the name of WALKER, age about 19, medium height, complexion pale, hair ( worn down back) brown ; dress, blue serge, and white lace skirts, white blouse, large white straw hat trimmed large white feather, red roses and magenta ribbon, yellow shoes, wore a gold neck chain with cross attached. May be carrying a fawn colour mackin- tosh and blue parasol. She engaged apartments, stating that her mother and sister were coming by a later train. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Ramsgate. LANCASHIRE. 28.- Liverpool ( City).— For failing to re- port— Licence- holder ANDREW McGHAN, alias WILLIAM HENDERSON, Office No, 2277- 00, age 28, height 5 ft. 3i in, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar above right eyebrow, 3 abscess scars front and right side of neck, anchor tattooed back of left forearm. Sentenced at Dur- ham Quarter Sessions, 4th April. 1898, to 3 years penal servitude for shopbreaking. Released from H. M. Convict Prison, Borstal, 20th ult. Y. 132. Licence - holder ANNIE, alias HANNAH FARRELL, and ANNIE YOUNG, Office No. 2232- 00, age 37, height 4 ft. 11 in, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar below inner angle of left eye, indistinct blue tattoo on left forearm, scar on right cheek and bridge of nose, 2 cuts centre of forehead. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 25th July, 1898, to 3 years penal servitude for burglary and housebreaking. Released from H. M. Convict Prison, Aylesbury, 14th ult. Y II'.. Supervisee SARAH McKENNA. alias MARY CLARKE, and JANE CLARKE, Office No. 2811- 98, age 36. height 4 ft. 10| in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar right cheek and left side of upper lip near nostril, pockmarked left side of face. Sentenced at Birmingham Sessions, 2nd July, 1897, to 15 calendar months imprisonment and 3 years police supervision for stealing a purse and 2s. 7d. from the person. Dis- charged from H. M. Prison, Birmingham, 1st October, 1898. 631. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 29Salford—( Borough). — For failing to report— Licence- holder DEWHANNAH JONES, alias HANNAH CAVE, ANN JONES, CAR- LISLE, DAVIES, CLARA CAMPBELL, MOR- GAN, and CLARKE, Office No. 2233- 00, age 52, height 5 ft, complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, mole left temple, under left ear, and back of neck, freckles on back and chest, 2 moles back left upper arm, hair mole front and back left forearm, scar back left forefinger, 2 moles back right hand, eczema and varicose veins both legs. Native of Scotland. Sentenced at Lancaster County Quarter Sessions, 12th April, 1897, to 5 years penal servitude for fraud. Licenced 18th August last. T. X. 28. NORTHUMBERLAND. 30.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 20th ult.. a watch ( recovered)— A WOMAN, who gave the name of WATERS, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 in, rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes dark brown, pleasant manner ; dress, black skirt ( braided on front), black and white silk blouse, black Eton jacket ( braided , black hat trimmed black feathers and white osprey feathers. She took lodgings at a temperance hotel, 18th ult, and stated she belonged to Hull. Absconded 20th ult. Information to Chief Constable Huish, Town Hall, North Shields. SHROPSHIRE. 31.— Whitchurch ( County).— For non- pay- ment of £ 2 12s, fine and costs imposed for cruelty— LEVI BRINKLEY, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in, complexion and small moustache dark, deaf and dumb. Travels the country with his father and brother with vans and several donkeys. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edge, Whitchurch. SOMERSETSHIRE. 32.— llminster ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 24th ult.— — THOMPSON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes dark, small sharp nose, very talkative, speaks with north- country accent; dress, dark suit, black bowler hat, lace boots. He represents himself as a foreman in the postal telegraph department, and engages lodgings for himself and others. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jennings, Ilminster. TuesDAY, . A tourist agent. Represented himself as a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. Had in his possession £ 150 in Scotch and Irish notes ( varying in value from £ 1 to £ 10 each). Addicted to drink. Stated he was a native of Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cambridge. STAFFORDSHIRE. 34.— Stoke- upon- Trent { County).— For failing to report— Licence - holder JAMES BRANNAN, alias HAMMERSLEY, MOLLART, MOLLETT, and PERRY, Office No. 1731- 00, age 50, height 5 ft. ti in., complexion ruddy, hair brown ( thin on top, turning grey), eyes blue, scar on both eyebrows and on forehead, scar from gun- shot left side, lost left arm from elbow, 2 scars back right forearm, nose inclined to right; dress, grey coat and vest, brown corduroy trousers, billycock hat. A labourer ; native of Northumber- land. Sentenced at Shrewsbury Assizes 27th November, 1895, to 6 years penal servitude for burglary. Licenced 27th June last. B. N. V. 249. Warrant issued.
