XVII., No. 1730. rEGuLATIONS. 1 All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be" addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken v/ pon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly dated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted, at a cost of 15$. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. • 4. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less ranli than Superintendent. ; and, if the name of such person is • required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against h im, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alpha bet i catty arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcement s for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received iwt later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament, Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. A solicitor. Warrant issued. 2. -- C Division.— For stealing £ 104 ( in- cluding 12 £ 5 Bank of England notes) — CHARLES W. CHAPMAN, age height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes ( full) blue, long thin face, prominent nose, receding chin ; dress, dark jacket suit, straw hat. A clerk. Information to be forwarded to the Metropoli- tan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S W. 3. - I Division.— R. S. W. COLLINS, Case No. 3, 4th August, 1899. Not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For obtaining goods by false pretences ABRAM W. LITTERY, an American, age 32 to 35, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes light; dress, grey morning ( coat) suit, hard felt hat, or black morning coat and vest with braided edges, light trousers, boots or shoes with square toes. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 5.— SlOligh ( County).— For stealing, 22nd nit., a thin gold wedding ring; a " Humber" bicycle, Victor saddle, parcel carrier on handles, " F. Parker" stamped on frame — MORTON MAURICE, age about 28, height about 5 ft, 7 in., slight build, face and hair red, clean shaved, bad teeth, woman tattooed on right arm, cone between left thumb and forefinger ; dress, grey tweed suit, blue tie. green tweed Alpine hat. May be found with minstrel troupes at seaside resorts. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sutton, Slough. CHESHIRE. 6.— Liscard { County).— For stealing, 11th inst., at New Brighton, a gold keyless lever watch; 1 silver lever hunting do. ; 1 lady's enamel hunt- ing watch, figured on back ; 1 lady's long gold guard, tassel and heart shape locket ( set diamond and 2 sapphires) attached ; 1 gold bracelet, set 3 diamonds and 2 blue stones ; 1 Bingle stone diamond ring; 1 gold double Albert, locket attached; 1 lady's gold half- hoop ring, set 5 diamonds ; 2 silver tablespoons ; and £ 3 7s. 6d.— MARTHA SCHROEDER, age about 19, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion pale, hair black, wears a fringe, eyes ( sore) supposed hazel, consumptive appearance ; dress, white muslin bodice, black skirt, black cape, and sailor hat. — MARY O'BRIEN, age about 20. height about 5 ft., rather stout, complexion fresh, hair ( frizzed in front) black, hair on upper lip; dress, light blouse, black skirt ( suppose crepon) black sailor hat. McDonald, Liscard. 7.— Middlewich ( County).— For burglary — JOSEPH DAY STEELE, alias JOSEPH DAY and JOSEPH DAY COOK, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and eyes brown, cut mark over left eye, small mole right side of neck ; dress, grey jacket, cord trousers, cap. lace boots. A farm labourer; native of Wincle, Cheshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DERBYSHIRE. 8.— Chesterfield (. County).— For stealing a mare ( recovered) and a light brown pony, 6 years, 13f hands, hair on body mixed with grey, 3 grey marks at root of tail, scar, size of a shilling, on near hip, black points, tail docked, grooved shoes in front, rather mule- footed — ROBERT MARFLEET, age 21, height 5 ft. 6J in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar back of right forearm, palm of left hand, and left first finger, mole on arms ; dress, dark suit. A native of Dresden, Staffs. Is an associate of low horse dealers and gipsies. See portrait, Case No. 40. Information to Supt. Faulkner, Chesterfield. DORSETSHIRE. 9.— Dorchester ^ County).— for stealing, 3rd inst., a shirt ; 1 pair black socks ; 1 stylo- graphic pen ; 1 penknife ; and a purse, containing a Kruger sixpence and a fourpenny piece dated 1S40— GEORGE WILLIAM HOOPER, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey ; dress, dark jacket and trousers, blue vest, blue serge cap, military boots. A brass finisher ; native of Walton. Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. ESSEX. 10.— Brentwood ICounty).— For larceny, 10th inst, at Southweald— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light; wearing a light dust coat, black soft felt hat. Had with him a box about 16 inches square covered with black cloth, containing jewellery. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 2 T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE. FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1900 11. — Grays [ County). — For assault — THOMAS LOGAN, a Scotchman, age 27. height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache brown, peculiar expression of mouth. A fitter ; has been employed at Chatham Dockyard. Warrant issued. 12.— Grays ( County).— For stealing ( by trick) 1th inst., 2 blue serge suits : 2 shirts ; and 2 pairs of socks— ALFRED WILLIAM BULL, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, mole right breast, abscess scars under jaw, fleshy mole on back, left thumb and fingers missing. An insurance agent; native of Bishops Stortford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 13. Grays ( County). — SEYMOUR DEN- TON, Case No. 16, 19th January last, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. 14.— Romford [ County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the common fund of the Romford Union, 30th April last— HARRY MANN, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl), moustache, and eyes brown, cut scar on one wrist, scar about in. long on right cheek ; dress, when last seen, dark tweed jacket and vest, cord trousers, black hard felt hat. A bricklayer; native of Nayland, Suffolk. Sometimes works as a sweep, also as a rag and bone gatherer. Frequents the company of low horse dealers and gipsies. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Creasy, Romford. 15.— Southend ( Count)/).-- For failing to report — Licence- holder THOMAS WALTON, alias PAGE, JOY, GILROY, PARSONS, and CORMACK, Office No. 2777- 99, age 67, height 5 ft. 2i in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( turn- ing grey), eyes blue, mole below lobe of left ear and on back of neck, scars both forefingers. A carpenter. Sentenced at Guildford Assizes, 9th June, 1894, to 5 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence, which expires 16th June, 1901. Licenced 14th September, 1899. GLAMORGAnSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 16 — Neath ( Borough). — For deserting his wife and family— GEORGE DEAKIN, age 37 to 40, height about 5 ft. 7 in., round shoulders, complexion sallow, long face, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes ( full, cast in one) hazel, stoops and carries his head forward. A herbalist; native of Neath ; may be found at markets selling herbs, sweets, & c. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Neath Union to any person giving such information as will lead to the arrest of Deakin. Information to Chief Constable Kilpatrick, Neath. 17.- Swansea ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, who gave the names of DAVID JONES and DAVID ROTH, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light; dress, dai'k jacket and vest, brown cord trousers ( all old), bowler hat. He called on the wife of a coal merchant, stated that he had sold a portion of a set of harness to her husband, and produced a note purporting to have been written by the latter, instructing her to pay the bearer. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.- Bristol ( City).— For failing to appear to his bail at Bristol Assizes, 5th inst., charged with buggery— JABEZ SKINGLE, age 53, height 5 ft. 3i in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, 3 brown moles on left forearm, Ion left upper arm, 2 boil marks between shoulders, 1 on back of neck. A photographer. Warrant issued. 19 - Bristol ( City).— For failing to report— Licence- holder CHARLES LLOYD, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey and slightly crossed, nose inclined to left, 2 stars, flowers and cross left forearm, left foot slightly deformed, bracelet left wrist. A labourer. Has been convicted at Gloucester. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing £ 20, 17th inst.— CHARLES FRED HUDSON, age 26J, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, bad teeth ; dress, blue serge suit, grey cap. Is a private of the 7th King's Royal Rifle Corps. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. 21.- Fareham [ County). For being con- cerned with two men in custody, charged with larceny at Titchfield, 1st. inst.— A MAN, age 24, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, impediment in speech; dress, black suit ( dress vest), skull cap. Stays at common lodging houses. Information to Supt. Hack, Fareham. 22.- Lyndhurst ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, whereby they became charge- able to the common fund of the Lymington Union — DAVID JOHN TOTTERDELL, age 44, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and . moustache dark brown ( turning grey), eyes blue, cut mark under lower lip, is addicted to drink. A clerk ; native of Lymington, Hants. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Courtney, Lyndhurst. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a horse— WILLIAM HATCH, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, slight moustache dark brown ; dress, grey or brown coat, cord trousers ( tight fitting). A native of Nomansland, Hants; will probably be found in the company of low horse dealers. Warrant issued. 24.— Southampton ( Borough).— Vor ob- taining £ 5 by false pretences— M. E. JACQUES, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, heavy moustache, and eyes ( prominent) dark, guttural accent, of Jewish appearance; dress, black morning coat, light blue fancy vest, dark trousers, white straw Alpine hat with black band. May be found at small temperance hotels. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South- ampton. HEREFORDSHIRE, 25.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing, 14th inst., abrown market basket, about20 in. long, 15in. wide ; 3 table knives, white handles, " Abraham Brookbank, Malinder Works, Sheffield," thereon ; 3 silver- plated forks, stamped " B crown, X crown, and D. C. A." ; 3 do. spoons, stamped " W. F. B." and cross keys— By A MAN, age 31. height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, thin face, hair brown, moustache red, eyes blue, cut mark back of head ; dress, brown jacket and vest, grey trousers, black hard hat or wide brimmed hat with dent in top ( no band), old boots. Hawks ferns, watercress, & c. ; supposed a native of London. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 26. — Bishops Stortford ( County).— For stealing, 20th inst., a lady's silver Geneva watch, and for obtaining money by false pretences ROBERT JOSEPH RICH, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache brown ; dress, dark coat, light striped trousers, plaid cap. A labourer; native of Chelmsford, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bishops Stortford. 27.— Hertford ( County).- For obtaining a number of engineer's tools by false pretences— H. BUCKLAND, alias CANN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 ins., slight build, complexion and moustache dark, pock- marked, American accent; dress, dark rough blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. He represented himself as an engineer, obtained the tools on loan, stating he had some work to execute, disposed of them, and absconded. Was accompanied by a woman, age about 27, short,, delicate appearance, and a boy age 11 years. Warrant issued. 28.— Hertford ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst., at Essendon, a thermometer ( recovered)— WILLIAM MITCHELL, age 46, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache turning grey, sharp nose; dress, dark jacket, black vest, grey striped trousers, grey waterproof cap, new lace boots. A painter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shore, County Police Office, Hertford. KENT. 29.- Dover ( Borough).— For stealing £ 37— CARLO DANNESI, an Italian, age 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and eyes dark, long moustache dark brown, speaks very little English ; dress, dark clothes and cap. An ice cream vendor ; previously employed as a ship's fireman. Absconded 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sanders, Dover. 30.— Sandwich ( County).— For unlawful wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm — MARY ANN SADLER, age about 30, rather tall, complexion and hair dark, thin face ( pock- marked) ; dress, check skirt, coloured blouse, fawn coloured jacket, grey felt hat or white straw hat with blue band. Supposed accompanied by a man, age 31, height 5 ft. 3} in. complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., at Westhoughton, a silver English lever watch. No. 24, plain cases; a blue and white striped cotton shirt; and 31s.— THOMAS HULL, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, carries his head forward, blue mark under right eye; dress, black worsted jacket and vest, brown cloth trousers, light colour cap, clogs. A collier. — ANNIE SHIELDS, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark, rather long nose ; dress, black dress, light brown cape, white straw sailor hat, trimmed black ribbon, carried a light brown shawl. Had with her a male child, age 6 months. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Leeming, County Police Office, Bolton. 32.— Prescot ( County).— For stealing at Woolton, 19th inst., a horse ( recovered— A MAN, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, slight moustache light; dress, brown suit, cap, spring side boots ; travels with a street piano. Is accompanied by his wife, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion very dark, hair black ; wearing dark grey striped shawl, black apron, white sailor hat with black band. Information to Supt. Baxendale, Prescot. 33.- Liverpool ( City). — Licence- holder PETER TEDFORD, Office No. 47504, Case No. 16, 11th May last, not now wanted. 34.— Warrington ( Borough).— For fraud — RALPH PLANT, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and slight moustache brown, rather large nose, of smart appearance ; dress, light plaid suit, black hard hat or light cap, lace boots. A pot manu- facturer ; formerly of Wolstanton, Staffs. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, Warrington. LEICESTERSHIRE. 35— Lutterworth ( County).— For obtain- ing a silver English lever watch by a worthless cheque on the City of Birmingham Bank, Limited, 4th inst.— ARTHUR STONE, age about 48, height 5 ft. 6' or 7 in., rather stout build, com- plexion fresh, full round face, hair brown, whiskers inclined to sandy, end of left little finger missing ; dress, brown tweed suit. A cattle dealer. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holmes, Leicester ; or Supt. Agar, Lutterworth. 36.- Leicester ( Borough).— For shopbreak- ing, 22nd inst., and stealing a gold English lever watch, No. 98903, " Gray, 549 " and private marks thereon ; and a 9 ct. gold Albert— A MAN, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, thin face, ginger moustache ; wearing a pair of light coloured trousers ( coat, vest and boots were left; behind). Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. NORFOLK. 37.- Norwich ( City).— For stealing ( bailee), 13th inst., £ 16 13s. Hd.— JOHN WILLIAM MORGAN, a Welshman, age 38, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small moustache, and eyes brown, addicted to drink, takes short quick Bteps and turns his feet outwards; dress, black jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, black soft felt hat, lace boots, had with him a pair of light trousers and brown boots. A foreman painter. Has also been employed as an engineer and steward on board ship. Warrant issued. 38.— Norwich ( City).— For stealing, 25th ult., a bicycle ( recovered)— CHARLES EDWARD HOWARD, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair sandy, clean shaved, eyes blue, anchor, cross, shamrock, and indistinct mark tattooed on left arm, pierced heart and indistinct mark right arm ; dress blue serge jacket, mixture trousers, cap, white canvas shoes. A shoe finisher; native of Norwich. Has served in the Navy. Information to Chief Constable Winch, Norwich. TuesDAY, July 17, 1900. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 PORTRAITS OF PERSONS WANTED. CORNWALL. missing, " Edith " tattooed on left wrist; dress, dark mixture cloth coat, brown cord vest, light cloth trousers, dark green cap mixed with red, brown canvas shoes, wore a gold ring, set diamond, on left little finger, had in his possession a lady's gold watch, " J. T. Holroyd" and " From Jack to Dolly" engraved on inner case, " 1886 " on outer case. A house painter ; stated he was a native of Huddersfield, and that he returned from America in March last. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Digby Collins, Newton Ferres House, Callington, for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of Holroyd. Information to Supt. Matthews, Liskeard. SUSSEX. 41— Hastings ( Borough).— For larceny— Supervisee EUGENE JACQUEMAN, alias SCHELLING, Office No. 3132- 99, age 3( 1, height 5 ft. it in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar middle of left eyebrow, on right eyebrow, and left forefinger, mole left side of neck ; dress, navy blue serge suit, black soft hat, brown boots, carried small brown handbag and cherrywood crooked handle stick (" Eugene Jacqueman " engraved on plate). A Swiss. Sen tenced at North London Sessions 15th June, 1896, to 3- J years penal servitude and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 23rd October 1899. U. W. 63. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Hastings. £ 10 REWARD DERBYSHIRE. lst finger, mole on both arms; wearing brown suit, square toe boots. A fish and potato mer- chant ; native of Dresden, Staff's. May be found lodging at public houses. Previously convicted at Stafford, and Derby Quarter Sessions of horse stealing. Warrant issued.
